Penguins Exciting Prospect Named Top Breakout Candidate

The Pittsburgh Penguins have plenty of young players to keep an eye on next season as they continue their retool. They will certainly be hoping that their most notable prospects end up taking big steps forward in their development in 2025-26.

In a recent article for The Hockey News' main site, Ryan Kennedy discussed one breakout candidate for each team in the Metropolitan Division. When it came to the Penguins, Kennedy went with forward Rutger McGroarty.

When noting that McGroarty is the Penguins' top prospect, it is easy to understand why Kennedy views him as a prime breakout candidate for Pittsburgh in 2025-26. The 21-year-old forward has all the tools to emerge as a legitimate top-six forward, and it would be huge if he could become just that for the Penguins next season.

McGroarty appeared in his first eight NHL games this past season with Pittsburgh, where he recorded one goal, two assists, three points, and 12 hits. He spent the bulk of it at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, however, where he had 14 goals and 39 points in 60 games. It was a solid first year for the 2022 first-round pick, and it will be interesting to see how he builds off it in 2025-26 from here.

Overall, there is a lot to like about McGroarty's game, and it is hard not to feel excited about his future. When looking at the Penguins' current roster, he has a real shot of competing for a spot in their top six, so it could very well be a big year for the Lincoln, Nebraska native.

Taijuan Walker did not get the win but was solid allowing a single run over six innings for Philadelphia. WNBA Preview: A story the league didn’t see coming; Rivals Week lookahead

The WNBA has endured two epidemics this season. The first, which I discussed two weeks ago, is a surge of injuries around the league. The second is something that almost no one saw coming and became a national headline.

Last week, we learned why lime green adult toys have been thrown onto the courts in over one-third of WNBA cities. A group of crypto traders launched a meme crypto coin that mirrored the toys. To garner attention for their coin, this group coordinated a plan to make sure these toys were thrown across the country.

While representatives from this group claimed that their intent wasn’t to demean women’s sports, that’s exactly what happened. That negative, demeaning attention reached many spheres, with the President of the United States’ son posting an AI-generated meme mocking the players and the league.

This latest prank is representative of how for so long women’s basketball and the WNBA were often treated every single day. The online bullying, the jokes across mainstream media that punched down.

It’s not funny and it never was. Just like most social progress, a step forward is often countered with at least one step back. The WNBA’s growth over the past two years and this prank in response is a case in point. Now that the dust has settled, and arrests and investigations are underway, it’s time to take another step forward instead of retreating.

Now onto the basketball. This week is the continuation of Rivals Week, a new league initiative where the WNBA is spotlighting a bunch of different matchups that feature the most established stars and most intriguing young stars in the league. The WNBA also wanted to be able to spotlight rivalries throughout league history in addition to the potential and bubbling ones of the present while also trying to create some more drama when it comes to playoff positioning.

While the idea is creative and thoughtful in theory, it hasn’t been working out so well in practice. The first 2024 WNBA finals rematch came at the end of July, and the final three matchups, two of which have been scheduled during rivals week, are going to be without both Liberty star Breanna Stewart and Lynx MVP frontrunner Napheesa Collier.

“You never know what's gonna happen with teams and the league didn't know that [Collier]and I were both gonna be out,” Stewart told reporters on Sunday. “But you want to see everybody full throttle. That's the first game of the season, or the second or the third. Not August.”

Is the league trying to do too much in this one week that began on Saturday August 9 and concludes on Sunday August 17? Build rivalries, showcase stars, create playoff seeding tension. It’s a lot to try to accomplish all under the singular umbrella of Rivals Week.

Also, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve expressed that while the league should be trying to build rivalries, it cannot prematurely assign them based on one highly exciting playoff series. It needs to be organic just like the iconic rivalry between the Lynx and the Sparks of the mid 2010s which gave fans a look into what would happen around a decade later.

“There's a chance, I think by the end of 2025, [Lynx vs. Liberty] becomes a rivalry through what happens during the course of this regular season and then whatever happens in the playoffs,” Reeve said on Sunday. “I don't think we're there yet, but the league says we are.”

The Week Ahead

As noted above, this week is the continuation of Rivals Week, a new WNBA initiative sponsored by bank and prominent women’s sports sponsor Ally. The Liberty play two of their “rivals” over the week in the Minnesota Lynx yet again in addition to the Las Vegas Aces who New York faced in two straight years during the postseason. The Atlanta Dream play the Seattle Storm twice in a two-game mini series that concludes in Canada, which will be the WNBA’s first regular season game in Canada before the expansion team the Toronto Tempo launch in 2026.

Not all of the games played this week during the continuation of Rivals Week represent full fledged rivalries. As Reeve said on Sunday, there needs to be multiple matchups of consequence played between two teams for them to be considered a rivalry that can stand the test of time.

New York Liberty @ Las Vegas Aces

(Wednesday August 13 at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN)

While the dynamics between these two teams have shifted ever since Kelsey Plum left the Aces for the Sparks, this is still a matchup between some of the best talent in the league. And this is still a matchup that both teams will get up for. A’ja Wilson will battle against Jonquel Jones as both players missed time during the second matchup on July 8. The Aces have been on a tear winning four out of their last five games while the Liberty have gone 3-2 in that same span of time without 2023 league MVP Breanna Stewart. Since the Liberty are coming off a back-to-back, the Aces should have the advantage, although the Aces have struggled with consistency in 2025. How will the Liberty handle an Aces team that has played better with Jewell Loyd coming off the bench? And how will Las Vegas handle a New York team with Emma Meesseman? It’s a look Wilson, Becky Hammon and company have yet to see.

Seattle Storm vs. Atlanta Dream

(Friday August 15 at 10 p.m. ET on ION)

The hottest team in the Dream face off against the ice-cold Storm that have lost five straight games including two back-and-fourth offensive slogs against the Aces and the Sparks. Before these two teams face each other in Vancouver, Canada on Friday for the WNBA’s first regular season game in Canada prior to the Tempo’s launch, these two will also play each other in Seattle on Wednesday night. Will new acquisition Brittney Sykes help the Storm find a win to propel themselves out of 8th place in the standings? Without Brittney Griner and Rhyne Howard for most of the Dream’s five game winning streak, first year coach Karl Smesko and Atlanta are making a push to catch the New York Liberty and earn home court advantage.

Las Vegas Aces @ Phoenix Mercury

(Friday August 15 at 10:00 PM ET on ION)

Las Vegas has had Phoenix's number so far this season, beating the Mercury twice during the first half of the season, although both games the Aces have won by a combined 4 points. Even when the Aces struggled with their consistency especially on the defensive end, A’ja Wilson led the way in both contests scoring 14 points in the first matchup and putting up a monster 26/18 double-double in the second. This will be Vegas’ first look at the Mercury with DeWanna Bonner who joined the team on July 8. Via multiple sources familiar with the situation, Bonner was very close to signing with the Aces but then chose the Mercury. I will be curious to see how the Aces play against Bonner for the first time after she passed on them.

New York Liberty @ Minnesota Lynx

(Saturday August 16 at 2:00 p.m. ET on CBS)

The Liberty are put through the ringer this week. After suffering a tough loss to the Lynx on Sunday where Minnesota’s swarming defense created 22 points off 20 turnovers, New York heads west to play a back-to-back on Tuesday and Wednesday before flying to Minneapolis to face the Lynx on Saturday.

While the Liberty might be exhausted, they’ll at least have a day to practice, something they haven’t had since Emma Meesseman made her debut on August 3. Presumably without Napheesa Collier for the third out of fourth 2024 WNBA Finals matchup, the Lynx will look to win the season series against the Liberty, and they’ll have five days without any games this week to be able to do so. It will come down to which team is most alert: the one in game rhythm or the one without a single game for five days. Will the Liberty learn from their mistakes in the first two games or will the Lynx continue rolling even without their best player?

Atlanta Dream @ Golden State Valkyries

(Sunday August 17 at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBA TV)

Both the Dream and Valkyries are looking to elevate their playoff standings. As of this writing, the Dream are tied by record for second place with the Liberty but New York has the tiebreaker having beat Atlanta twice out of three times that the two teams have played. What’s the difference between second and third place? A lot. First and second place in the standings guarantee home court advantage through at least the first two rounds, while third place most likely just means the first round unless a higher seed is knocked out early. The Valkyries are clinging to seventh, with the Storm and Sparks less than two games back in eighth and ninth respectively. The Sparks will play just hours before this matchup against the Mystics, yet another team that’s currently hanging around in the playoff picture amid the team’s most recent moves prior to the trade deadline. Although it seemed quite clear that those moves communicate the franchise's lack of enthusiasm to try to make the playoffs in 2025.

62 Days Until Opening Night At NWA: The History Of Jersey #62

The Columbus Blue Jackets have only had four players wear #62 in their history, and in a weird twist, three of them have been since 2023. They haven't had any real impact players where the number in their short 25-year history, but that could change one day.

Let's take a look at who has put on the #62 Union Blue Jersey.

Alex Broadhurst -  Draft: Chicago, 7th round - 199th overall - 2011

Broadhurst was traded to Columbus by Chicago with Brandon Saad and Michael Paliotta for Artem Anisimov, Jeremy Morin, Corey Tropp, Marko Dano, and Columbus' 4th round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, June 30, 2015. He would only play in a pair of games for the CBJ during the 2017-18 season. Where Broadhurst would excel would be in the AHL for the Cleveland Monsters. He played in 229 games for Cleveland, scoring 48 goals and totaling 132 points. On February 25, 2019, he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets. He would play 2019-20 with the San Diego Gulls, and then leave for Europe. He spent two seasons in Liiga and the last three playing in the KHL. He is signed to play a fourth consecutive season in Russia for 25-26.

Samuel Kňažko -  Draft: Columbus, 3rd round - 78th overall - 2020

Kňažko's scouting report from Elite Prospects reads as follows: "Kňažko's passing skills are refined for a defenseman. He can find players in the seam and on the breakout with great accuracy. He's comfortable with making plays from his backhand and makes sharp passes with good power behind them. His mobility stood out; he has the skating ability to be effective defending against the rush and during long cycles." Unfortunately for Kňažko, he's a left-shot defenseman, and that's not something that the Blue Jackets really needed at any level, so he became expendable. After playing in only two NHL games and three seasons with the Monsters, he was not tendered a contract and became a free agent. Instead of staying in North America, he chose to return home to Czechia and play for HC Vítkovice. Kňažko should also be selected for Czechia in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Kevin Labanc -  Draft: San Jose, 6th round - 171st overall - 2014

Labanc was by Columbus, October 5, 2024, just prior to the season. After playing 8 seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Labanc was on a PTO with the New Jersey Devils when he was plucked away by Don Waddell. Labanc played in 34 games for Columbus last season before going down due to injury. He scored 2 goals and had 12 points while playing 10:30 a game. Labanc did fairly well in his role. He was scratched a lot, but when he got his chance to play, he was usually noticeable. He had four points in his first five games to start the season, and fans were excited to see what he could do. As of right now, Labanc doesn't have an NHL deal, but there are rumors that he is getting interest from Europe. Once he is cleared from his injury, he should be good to go for the 25-26 season.

As of right now, no other player is scheduled to wear #62 in the immediate future for the CBJ, but surely someday someone will take that number who will have an impact on the team.

With 62 days left before the Jackets take the ice again at Nationwide Arena, there is a lot of positivity surrounding the team. Don Waddell signed who he had to sign in the offseason to put the team in a good position going forward. People wanted a few things, including huge free agents and big trades, but many forget that he has to sign some very important players soon, including Adam Fantilli and Jet Greaves. Not to mention Kirill Marchenko, Kent Johnson, and Dmitri Voronkov may need new deals in 2027.

There are still many questions that need to be answered, but for now, we wait. Don Waddell is no doubt still working the phones, trying to make the team better every day. Whether it's by trade or a free agent, the job never sleeps.

What do you think Don Waddell should do between now and opening night?

The Jackets have 62 days until opening night at Nationwide Arena, and fans are getting restless. The CBJ will take on the New Jersey Devils on Monday, October 13th at 7 PM. The Blue Jackets have much higher expectations this season than in previous years. Many expect the CBJ to make the playoffs, something they missed by a single win last season. Can the Blue Jackets overcome their deficiencies and weaknesses to make a playoff push in the weak Metro Division?

Mets' David Stearns in Japan for slugger Munetaka Murakami's game

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearnswas in Japan on Tuesday to watch slugger Munetaka Murakami's game against the Yokohama DeNA BayStars.

Murakami, a first baseman/third baseman for the Yakult Swallows, could be a free agent this offseason -- making Stearns' presence at his game potentially highly notable.

And Murakami -- who has dealt with injuries this season that have limited him to 14 games to this point -- made a statement on Tuesday, smacking a walk-off home run.

Murakami, 25, has been a star during his eight seasons in NPB, slashing .273/.394/.543 with 246 home runs, 165 doubles, and 681 RBI.

His best power season came in 2022, when he smashed 56 homers and drove in 134.

The expectation is that Murakami will be posted this offseason. If so, he will be one of the most coveted free agents in a class that's a bit weak on the position-player side when it comes to MLB players. Kyle Tucker and Pete Alonso (who is expected to opt out of the final year of his two-year deal) are expected to headline that class.

In the event Alonso opts out and leaves as a free agent, it's conceivable Murakami could be his replacement at first base.

But the Mets would have to beat out a slew of interested teams, including the Dodgers. Los Angeles has had a stranglehold on the Japanese market for years, including recent signings of Roki Sasaki and Yoshinobu Yamamoto out of Japan, and the signing of Shohei Ohtani after he spent the first portion of his MLB career with the Angels.

  • Hosts made 165 in vain chase of 219 in Darwin

Dewald Brevis lit up Darwin’s Marrara Oval with a blazing century to help South Africa to an imposing 53-run victory over Australia in the second Twenty20 match.

The 22-year-old Brevis scored an unbeaten 125 from 56 balls with 12 fours and eight sixes, propelling South Africa to 7-218 before Australia struggled to 165 in front of another noisy near-capacity crowd on Tuesday night.

Europe’s Ryder Cup class of 2025 shapes up with familiar feel for US showdown | Ewan Murray

Captain Luke Donald could be able to keep changes from victorious 2023 team to an absolute minimum at Bethpage

If continuity is key to Ryder Cup success, even the phlegmatic Luke Donald must be doing cartwheels. This also applies to those who believe the occasional away win is necessary if the event is to remain within the realms of serious sporting contest. The European class of 2025 is now very close to replicating the one that won in Rome in 2023, but with one quirk; Rasmus Højgaard replacing his twin brother, Nicolai. What the United States would give for such a settled scenario.

Should Donald be so minded, he can keep change to an absolute minimum. Recreating a winning environment becomes so much easier when the characters involved are the same. When Europe slumped to comprehensive defeat at Whistling Straits four years ago, seven of the 12-man team were sampling an American Ryder Cup for the first time. At Hazeltine, in 2016, half of Darren Clarke’s European contingent were debutants. The US again won with ease.
