Washington Nationals drop the final game of a successful home stand

In the last game of a 16 day run where they played every day, the Nats did not have any juice. They came out flat before the rain delay and that continued when play resumed. However, given the context, it was a performance I can live with in a 162 game season.

This was still a successful home stand. After leaking oil for most of August, the Nats had a solid 6-4 run at home. Things reached rock bottom after they got humbled in a 13-1 defeat against the Rockies. However, after Blake Butera called out the team’s effort, they responded. They won 3 out of 4 against the Marlins and last night’s win over the Braves was one of my favorites of the season.

Today was a different story though. Even though James Wood was back, it just felt like a punt game from the beginning. Between the pitching plan and the lack of offense, they never felt in the game. It was Wood who got the first hit of the game in the 6th inning. This was just a sleepy performance.

Brad Lord actually did his part, firing 3.1 strong innings before a lengthy rain delay. After play resumed, Riley Cornelio got out of a bases loaded jam. That could have been the spark to ignite the Nats, but they just did not have it today. On the broadcast, they said that the Nats played 39 games in 41 days. With an off day and such a dramatic win last night, coming out flat was honestly understandable.

This game was pretty uneventful outside of a couple 3-run homers for the Braves and Max Kranick getting lit up like a Christmas tree. I want to circle back to last night though. That was one of the best wins the organization has had in some time.

I put it like that because the group accomplished a lot in that win. With their 67th win of the year, the Nats exceeded their win total from 2025. Heading into the season, there was real doubt about whether that would happen following the losses of MacKenzie Gore, Jose A. Ferrer and Josh Bell.

However, they got it done with plenty of time to spare. That is due in large part to the impressive hitting infrastructure the new front office has put in place. Even in September, the Nats are still second in baseball in runs scored and have some real distance between themselves and third. The pitching development has been hit or miss, but it feels like almost every hitter in the organization has improved.

We saw that on display last night with Yohandy Morales. The 24 year old looked right at home in his MLB debut. He had three hits on the night, with his first being a home run which was an amazing moment. There are not a ton of massive names in this lineup, but everyone they bring up seems to be at least showing some promise offensively.

There have been some players who have taken massive leaps, while others are taking slow but steady strides. Some players like Curtis Mead immediately took to the new coaching and broke out right away. For others such as Luis Garcia Jr. and Andres Chaparro, it took a couple months for things to click, but when it did, the impact was loud.

Brady House is another fun example. He showed he was better than last year at the plate right away, but still needed to make big improvements. House actually had to go to the minor leagues to do that. Since being recalled, he has looked a lot better on both sides of the ball. He has a second half OPS of .755. As a whole, his OPS has gone from .574 last year to .710 this year in a nearly identical sample.

While Dylan Crews has not taken the leap most were hoping for, he also had a big moment this home stand. One thing that dogged the Nationals all year long was late inning offense. Crews finally gave the boys their first walk off all season. It was a big moment for him and the team.

Crews has slumped since that moment, which is honestly on brand for how his career has gone. However, I do think the walk off still gave him extra confidence that could be helpful down the line.

It was ugly today, but this was honestly one of my favorite home stands of the year. The team looked pretty dead coming into it, but came out with more life. This season could have gone totally off the rails, but this home stand helped the Nats stabilize.

They finally have an off day now before going on a west coast trip. The boys better bring more energy this weekend because the Dodgers are no easy challenge. It is time for the Nats to finish strong and build momentum into next season. This home stand helped that goal tremendously.

Cardinals vs Dodgers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight's MLB Game

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is on the bump tonight, so I'm riding with him as part of our Cardinals vs. Dodgers predictions.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are massive 70-cent favorites at Polymarket, and we'll be focused on the run line to squeeze out some extra value as a result.

Let’s dive into my MLB picks for Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Who will win Cardinals vs Dodgers today: Dodgers -1.5 (51%)

For help understanding probabilities, see our odds calculator.

When Yoshinobu Yamamoto is on the mound, it's tough to find an edge elsewhere. Yamamoto allowed just seven earned runs across 32 1/3 innings pitched in August (1.95 ERA), and is in a good spot against the St. Louis Cardinals, a team that owns a .176 average against him.

Yamamoto is having another fantastic season, with opponents rocking just a .213 xBA and .340 xSLG against him this year. He'll silence the bats, and with many questions surrounding who will be on the mound for the Cardinals, I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the Los Angeles Dodgers' offense.

Covers COVERS INTEL: With the lowest walk rate of his career (5.9%), the Cardinals are going to have to earn it tonight. Expect Yamamoto to go deep against the team ranked 22nd in wRC+.

Cardinals vs Dodgers Over/Under pick: Under 7.5 (47%)

The Cardinals have yet to announce their starter, but while I think the Dodgers will do enough to cover, their offense has struggled recently. The Under has covered in four of their last five games, and that trend should continue with Yamamoto on the mound tonight.

St. Louis is also one of the best Under teams in baseball, hitting at a 54.2% clip this season.

Cardinals vs Dodgers home run prediction: Pick (16%)

At this price, Jordan Walker is the best bet on the board tonight. Walker owns the highest xSLG (.486) of his career and has an .821 OPS against righties.

Mistakes may be few and far between from Yamamoto tonight, but if there's one guy in the Cardinals' lineup that will capitalize, it's Walker.

What punishment did the Clippers get? NBA releases full list of penalties

The NBA came down hard on the Los Angeles Clippers for violating salary cap circumvention rules.

The league announced significant penalties and fines for the Clippers organization, owner Steve Ballmer, former star Kawhi Leonard and other team executives in relation to their role in the scandal after releasing the findings of an 11-month independent investigation.

A law firm commissioned by the NBA determined the Clippers facilitated alleged "no-show" endorsement deals for Leonard with at least four different companies following an initial "Pablo Torre Reports" investigation into Leonard's dealings with the Clippers and team sponsor, Aspiration Partners. The investigation also revealed the Clippers, who are considered a repeat offender by the NBA, broke rules by paying for personal expenses on behalf of Leonard and his representatives in a manner not allowed under NBA rules.

Commissioner Adam Silver is not taking the matter lightly, saying in a statement, "the severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations." The Clippers have vehemently denied the allegations and responded Wednesday that they will continue to challenge the findings from the league's investigation.

Here's a breakdown of the punishment handed out by the NBA to the Los Angeles Clippers, Kawhi Leonard, owner Steve Ballmer and more after an investigation into the team's violations of the league's salary-cap circumvention rules:

Clippers punishment from NBA investigation

  • The Clippers forfeited five first-round draft picks, one in each of the 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032 and 2033 NBA Drafts.
  • The Clippers were fined $30 million.
  • The Clippers organization and personnel are subject to a compliance and monitoring program overseen by the NBA league office for five years.
  • Clippers President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank is suspended without pay for six months for his involvement with arranging the impermissible endorsement deals and approving impermissible expenses incurred by Leonard and his family.
  • Clippers President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker is suspended without pay for one year for being "primarily and directly culpable for the impermissible endorsement arrangements and for providing false and misleading statements to investigators."

What penalties did Steve Balmer receive?

  • Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is suspended from all league and team activities for one year for knowingly seeking to help Leonard obtain off-court income opportunities, for approving a business deal that he knew was a precondition for Aspiration to enter into an endorsement agreement with Mr. Leonard, and for his failure to create conditions under which his organization abided by the NBA’s circumvention rules.

What penalties did Kawhi Leonard receive?

  • Leonard received a $700,000 fine.
  • Leonard's former associate, Dennis Robertson, is banned for five years "from conducting business or otherwise engaging with NBA teams and their affiliates on behalf of or with respect to any player, employee, or other league or team personnel."

Clippers 'vehemently reject' NBA's findings, will 'vigorously challenge' penalties

The Los Angeles Clippers "vehemently reject" the NBA's findings that they circumvented the salary cap with their alleged facilitation of "no-show" endorsement deals for their former star forward Kawhi Leonard, the team said in a statement on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The Clippers' statement came soon after the NBA announced significant punishments for the team, owner Steve Ballmer and Leonard following an 11-month investigation. Here's how the Clippers responded to being fined $30 million and forced to forfeit five first-round draft picks.

What Clippers said about punishment from NBA

"We vehemently reject the NBA's findings, which are the result of a heavily biased investigation seeking to justify a predetermined narrative rather than facts and evidence," the statement read. "What the league told us privately differs from what it announced today publicly, and they have not held themselves close to the standard Commissioner Silver set at the start of this investigation to ensure it's fairness and accuracy.

"For the past year, we cooperated fully and in good faith and we will now fight just as hard to demonstrate our innocence. We intend to vigorously challenge these findings and penalties through every avenue available to us and look forward to an ethical and impartial arbitration process."

What are Clippers fines, punishments?

The Clippers are being fined a staggering $30 million, and the team will forfeit five first-round picks in the 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032 and 2033 NBA drafts. Leonard has been fined $700,000, payable to the NBA, and the league is also suspending Ballmer from all league activities for one year.

According to the release, the NBA and National Basketball Players Association, "have entered into an agreement confirming these penalties are final and binding on all parties."

This comes after a recent ESPN report indicated that the league's investigation had found no evidence linking Ballmer to the alleged scheme. The NBA pushed back against that report, citing "significant inaccuracies."

Kawhi Leonard statement on Clippers punishments

“Integrity and respect for this game are fundamental to who I am. I accept full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within my inner circle and regret the distraction this situation has caused the fans and my family," the statement read via ESPN's Shams Charania.

"I entered into my contract with the Clippers as well as the agreements in question in good faith, fully committed to fulfilling my obligations and with no knowledge of any intent on anyone's part to circumvent the salary cap. For 15 years, my priority has been giving everything to my family, the game, and those I share the court with. As I return to Toronto, I am focused on what I can control, closing this chapter, and moving forward with a clean slate."

San Francisco Giants vs. Pittsburgh Pirates, September 2, 2026, 6:40 p.m. ET

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the middle of a three-game set inside PNC Park against the San Francisco Giants.

On the mound for the Giants is Landen Roupp (8-13, 4.25 ERA), who is making his 27th start of the season. Roupp last pitched against the Arizona Diamondbacks at home on August 27, going five innings and giving up four hits and one earned run in a 6-1 victory. With the win, he snapped a six-game losing streak. Roupp pitched against the Pirates earlier in the season, giving up three hits and one earned run in a 13-3 loss back in May.

Jared Jones is getting the ball for the Pirates, where he hopes to bounce back after a tough losing streak of his own. In his last start against the St. Louis Cardinals on August 28, he went 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs in a 4-1 loss. The Pirates last won a game in which Jones pitched on July 18 against the Cleveland Guardians. Since then, they have dropped seven in a row when he takes the mound.

Perhaps September will bring some hope for Jones, but they will have to earn it against the Giants.

Clippers declare war on NBA over Kawhi Leonard verdict: ‘Heavily biased investigation’

The Los Angeles Clippers are not going down easy after the NBA dropped the hammer on them Wednesday.

The Clippers’ organization was stripped of five first-round NBA draft picks and was fined $30 million as a result of the NBA’s verdict that they violated the league’s salary cap circumvention rules by “initiating off-court income opportunities” for superstar forward Kawhi Leonard.

Los Angeles released a very strong statement on these findings soon after they went public.

“We vehemently reject the NBA’s findings, which are the result of a heavily biased investigation seeking to justify a predetermined narrative rather than facts and evidence. What the league told us privately differs from what it announced today publicly, and they have not held themselves close to the standard Commissioner [Adam] Silver set at the start of this investigation to ensure it’s fairness and accuracy,” the statement read.

“For the past year, we cooperated fully and in good faith and we will now fight just as hard to demonstrate our innocence. / We intend to vigorously challenge these findings and penalties through every avenue available to us and look forward to an ethical and impartial arbitration process.”

Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker and President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank are getting suspended for various periods because of the investigation.

Meanwhile, Leonard was fined $700,000 and wasn’t suspended, which means he’ll be allowed to join the Raptors.

'Biggest punishment in NBA history'? Experts reacts to Clippers' Kawhi penalties

Editor's note: Follow along for live updates on the NBA punishments handed out to Kawhi Leonard and the L.A. Clippers.

The long NBA investigation into Kawhi Leonard the Los Angeles Clippers came to a conclusion Wednesday when the league issued punishments to the team, several of its executives and the star who was since traded to the Toronto Raptors.

Among the long list of punishments, the Clippers will be fined $30 million. They will also lose a substantial access to future talent, giving up five first-round picks in the 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032 and 2033 NBA drafts.

For Leonard, the NBA states that the star player has been fined $700,000. No mention of suspension was included in the press release.

The world reacted accordingly as to what it means for the Clippers, Leonard and the future of the organization.

Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers preview, Wednesday 9/2, 6:40 CT

Wednesday notes…

  • YOU PROBABLY KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED: During the Cubs’ 6-10 slide, their starting pitchers have allowed no more than three runs in 11 games. The Cubs won only five of them. They lost once when a starter permitted up no runs, twice each when he yielded one and two, and last night, when Matthew Boyd gave up three. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
  • CUBS vs. BREWERS: With last night’s loss, the Cubs are 120-114 in games at home against the Brewers. In games of home series that began in the last week of August or later, they are 32-27, but in the last 10 such series, just 13-19, and in the last six, 6-13. They are 8-9 in all third games of the late-season series but 2-8 in the last 10 and 1-5 in the last six, with the win coming in the most recent third game, in 2023. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
  • HOME RUN NOTE: One day after hitting a team-record nine home runs, the Cubs did not hit any. On July 1, they hit eight; in their next game, two days later, none. Last year, they hit eight for the first time on July 4, then two the next day. The Cubs lost all three of the next-day games. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
  • TODAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Ryne Sandberg’s grand slam highlights a six-run eighth inning, bringing the Cubs back from a 5-4 deficit to an eventual 10-8 win over the Padres in San Diego. It happened 35 years ago today, Monday, Sept. 2, 1991.

Cubs lineup:

Brewers lineup:

David Peterson, LHP vs. Jacob Misiorowski, RHP

In eight starts and one relief appearance since that debacle against the Cardinals July 3, David Peterson has been outstanding: 2.35 ERA, 1.261 WHIP, although he struggled a bit in his last start, Friday against the Reds.

Peterson’s first start as a Cub was against the Brewers, June 27 in Milwaukee, and he turned in a creditable 5.2 inning outing with two runs allowed and no walks.

That’d work pretty well tonight.

So, Jacob Misiorowski. You all know what he’s accomplished and how hard he throws.

The Cubs have had some success against him, largely when they can work counts and foul off a lot of pitches. That’s about the only thing I can suggest for success this evening.

He has been slightly less fantastic since his ERA dropped to 1.34 on June 12. Since then: 2.25 ERA in 11 starts, with nine home runs allowed in 64 innings. That’s really good but not as otherworldly as before, with that 1.34 ERA in his first 14 starts and only four HR in 87 innings.

Good luck tonight, Cubs hitters.

Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Cubs and Brewers market territories).

Mets Notes: Andy Green on Jonah Tong potentially joining the rotation, Devin Williams' status

Prior to Wednesday night's rubber game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Mets interim skipper Andy Green talked about the team's starting pitching rotation moving forward and the health status of key players.

Is a Jonah Tong call-up just around the corner?

With the MLB rosters having just expanded by two additional players, 23-year-old righty Jonah Tong is a strong candidate for a September call-up from Triple-A Syracuse.

In his last outing in the minors on Aug. 29th, Tong allowed just one hit through seven full innings, striking out eight batters and walking two.

Green told the media that Tong's potential addition to the team's pitching staff is "under discussion right now" and called the prospect of an extended starting rotation "definitely a possibility".

"We have been paying attention to Jonah's outings, we've seen where he's at, and we think positively about what he's done," he continued.

"When Jonah is in the strike zone, on the attack, letting his best stuff play, he usually has a lot of success," Green concluded.

However, it seems that Tong's potential first appearance with the big league club since June of this year might have to wait until after New York's three-game road set against the San Francisco Giants, as Green named Nolan McLean, Zac Thornton, and Christian Scott as the team's starters for that series.

Status of injured RHP Devin Williams

The Mets said they "hope and anticipate" that closer Devin Williams will return from his shoulder strain this season.

Accordingly, Green provided a brief update on the right-hander in his news conference.

"He's playing catch. I don't have a timetable yet, but he is throwing," he stated.

In Williams' place, Kodai Senga has been converted into an effective makeshift reliever. In August, Senga recorded five saves and 12 strikeouts across 10.1 innings, sporting a 1.74 ERA in the process.

Juan Soto's potential return to the outfield

The last time Juan Soto started a game in the Mets' outfield was Jul. 24 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the same game in which the star slugger exited early with a calf injury.

Since returning from that injury on Aug. 29, Soto has served as the team's designated hitter rather than taking his usual spot in left field.

However, Green had some positive news about Soto's potential return to the outfield.

"He'll definitely get back out there," Green shared. "We'll let how he feels daily dictate how often he's out there, since we'd obviously like him in the lineup every single day, so we'll do our best."

"There will be DH days, but how many depends on a number of factors," Green revealed.

NBA fans in disbelief over Kawhi Leonard’s light punishment from investigation

An image collage containing 2 images, Image 1 shows Kawhi Leonard looking thoughtful during a press conference, Image 2 shows A man with dark, curly hair and a beard, wearing sunglasses and a dark t-shirt, rests his chin on his fist while watching the WTA 1000 National Bank Open

The NBA dropped the hammer on the Los Angeles Clippers for violating the league’s salary cap circumvention rules by “initiating off-court income opportunities” for star forward Kawhi Leonard.

The Clippers are forced to forfeit five first-round NBA Draft picks, are fined $30 million to owner Steve Ballmer, and both Ballmer, Clippers President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker, and President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank are all getting suspended for various periods of time.

Kawhi Leonard is being fined $700,000 but is not getting suspended. Therefore, this opens the door for him to reunite with the Toronto Raptors, a trade which has been in place for several months.

Toronto Raptors forward Kawhi Leonard speaks to reporters before a team practice on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, in Oakland, Calif. The Raptors are scheduled to play the Golden State Warriors in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday. AP

Many feel like Leonard is getting off easy, given that this investigation was centered around him and his contract. And several hilarious social media posts are conveying this.

X user @KingJosiah54 posted a video of a kid on the swings with a fire in the background with the caption, “Raptors waiting for Kawhi outside the Clippers facility”.

“Kawhi came out like gangbusters man lmao no suspension, no contract void, a relatively small fine, and gets to go play for a different team while his old organization is turbo f**** LMAOOOOOO,” wrote @SnackPr0tein in another X post.

X user @OnyxOdds posted a video of Heath Ledger’s Joker character walking away from a hospital in The Dark Knight (2008) with the caption, “Kawhi leaving the Clippers after destroying the future of their franchise”.

Clippers fan account @RaptorsLead posted the iconic LeBron James “Smiling through it all! Can’t believe this my life” meme with the caption, “CLIPPERS LOSE 5 FIRSTS / STEVE BALLMER GETS A $30M FINE / KAWHI ISN’T SUSPENDED!!!!!”

It definitely seems like Leonard got a much longer stick than the Clippers. But Raptors fans clearly aren’t complaining.

First Look At Brady Tkachuk In Panthers Gear As He Joins Teammates For Offseason Workout In Fort Lauderdale

The Tkachuk brothers have arrived in South Florida.

Recently, members of the Florida Panthers have been making their way back to Broward County ahead of the team’s annual training camp, which is set to begin in just over two weeks.

On Tuesday, a video was posted on social media by Panthers Skills Coach Max Ivanov showing a handful of Florida players on the ice at the Baptist Health IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale for a workout.

A screenshot of the video, which was posted as an Instrgram story that will disappear after 24 hours, can be seen below.

Image

Among the group were Panthers captain Sasha Barkov, defenseman Dmitry Kulikov and forwards Matthew and Brady Tkachuk.

It’s the first time we’re getting a look at the younger Tkachuk brother on the ice wearing his brand new Panthers gear.

He and his teammates were all sporting the same traditional Panthers practice uniforms that we'll see them wearing throughout the season.

That meant Brady was skating in a white Florida practice sweater to go with a new white helmet and navy blue gloves and pants.

Florida acquired Brady in a blockbuster trade with the Ottawa Senators, giving up a trio of first-round picks and a second-round selection in exchange for the young star forward.

The Panthers’ first preseason game is set for Sunday, Sept. 20 against the Carolina Hurricanes at Amerant Bank Arena.

They’ll open the season nine days later when head to Raleigh to face the Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL’s first official game of 2026-27.

Today in Blue Jays History: Dave Stieb Throws No-Hitter

36 Years Ago Today

Blue Jays starter Dave Stieb had carried no-hitters into the ninth inning three times before. So, when Stieb took the mound in Cleveland on September 2, 1990, he must have wondered what would happen this time. Here’s what happened those previous three times:

  • On September 24, 1988, in Cleveland, Julio Franco broke up the no-hitter with a ground ball that took an unexpectedly high hop, sailing over second baseman Manny Lee’s head.
  • In Stieb’s very next start, this time in Toronto against the Orioles, Jim Traber ended the bid with a soft two-out fly ball that dropped between the infielders and outfielders.
  • Then, on August 4, 1989, during the inaugural season at SkyDome, Roberto Kelly spoiled a potential perfect game with a two-out double into the gap in the ninth inning.

But the fourth time, everything finally fell into place.

In the ninth, Stieb:

  • Got pinch-hitter Chris James to fly out (a pretty deep flyout).
  • Struck out pinch-hitter Candy Maldonado.
  • Walked Alex Cole (Stieb walked 4, unusual for him).
  • And he induced Jerry Browne to fly/line out to right fielder Junior Felix.

Here is the final out:

Cleveland didn’t exactly have a powerhouse lineup in 1990. Their cleanup hitter, Ken Phelps (perhaps best known for a Seinfeld reference rather than his baseball stats), was batting just .155/.288/.198 at the time. In fact, five of their starters had an OPS below .700.

Stieb didn’t feel he was at his best that day. From the Toronto Star game story:

I didn’t have great control. I couldn’t find my release point in the early innings. I hung pitches but got away with them. They helped me out a few times by swinging at bad pitches. They hit balls right at people.

The win was Stieb’s 17th of the season against 5 losses. He finished the game with a 2.91 ERA. He would finish the season 18-6 with a 2.93 ERA, his most wins in a season, setting a new team-high.

I was a huge fan of Stieb—he was fiercely competitive. He would have been a good match for Jose Bautista, but unlike Jose, Stieb wasn’t afraid to stare down teammates who made mistakes. Unfortunately, the team wasn’t at its best when he was in his prime. I’m not sure if he was a bad teammate in other respects, but that kind of behavior probably didn’t make him popular in the clubhouse.

But I wasn’t on the team—I just saw him as the best player on my team and, at the time, the best pitcher in baseball. I admired his drive to win. For much of his career, there weren’t many other Jays worth cheering for.

It is still the only no-hitter in Blue Jays history.
