Judge gets 500th extra-base hit, 3rd-fastest Yankee to reach mark behind DiMaggio, Gehrig
NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge became the third-fastest New York Yankees player to reach 500 extra-base hits with a three-run homer in the first inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night, trailing only Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig.
Judge lined a 1-1 fastball from Merrill Kelly to the opposite field and into the Yankees bullpen for a 3-0 lead. The two-time AL MVP added a run-scoring single in the fourth inning as the Yankees moved ahead 7-3 and has five homers and 15 RBIs in six games this season.
Judge has 320 homers, 175 doubles and five triples in 999 games.
DiMaggio reached 500 extra-base hits in 853 games and Gehrig in 869.
Bob Meusel is fourth at 1,091, followed by Robinson Cano (1,130) and Mickey Mantle (1,138).
The Colorado Avalanche Clinch Eighth Consecutive Playoff Berth After Resounding Win in Columbus
At the end of the 2016-17 season, the Colorado Avalanche finished dead last in a 30-team league, with a record of 22-56-4 and a total of 48 points.
The next season, Colorado made it back to the postseason. Though it was fruitless with a first-round bounce, it ended a three-year postseason drought.

It was reported this morning by NHL.com that the Avalanche had an opportunity to secure their spot in this year's postseason run with any of the following scenarios:
If they defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets in any fashion
OR
If they get one point vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets AND the Calgary Flames lose to the Anaheim Ducks in any fashion
OR
If the Calgary Flames lose to the Anaheim Ducks in regulation.
As of 8:45 pm Mountain Time, the Flames/Ducks game is tied at 1-1 in the second period. Not that it matters, as the Avalanche were able to check off scenario number 1.

This goal would be just one of three points on the night for the third-line center. The other two points came as assists on goals scored by Cale Makar and Miles Wood. He joins Makar and his defensive partner, Devon Toews, who also had three points apiece in tonight's win.
Brock Nelson, who slotted into Colorado's second-line center spot upon being traded, also notched a goal in tonight's win. This goal is his 10th point and 4th goal since being traded.
Every single center chipped in tonight. While it wasn't a goal, Jack Drury did provide the lone helper on Parker Kelly's game-winning goal in the second period. Since joining the Avalanche, Jack Drury has provided some much-needed depth to this team, providing not only vital help on the penalty kill, but crucial skill in the faceoff dot.
A Monumental Night for the Norris Trophy Favorite
Makar, as mentioned recorded a three-point night (1g/2a) in Colorado's win over Columbus. His goal, Colorado's fifth of the night, acted as his 30th of the season, making him the first defenseman in 16 years to achieve 30 goals in a season. He becomes the ninth defenseman to achieve a 30-goal season, joining the likes of Bobby Orr (5x), Paul Coffey (4x), Denis Potvin (3x), Doug Wilson, Phil Housley, Ray Bourque, Kevin Hatcher, and Mike Green, who was the last defenseman to notch the milestone in the 2008-09 season.

With a primary assist on Toews' third-period goal, Makar also hit the 60-assist mark on the season. He becomes the first defenseman in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history and the 20th defenseman in NHL history to record the milestone in multiple seasons. He is the fifth player, following Joe Sakic (7), Peter Stastny (7), Peter Forsberg (5), and Nathan MacKinnon, in franchise history to record multiple 60-assist seasons.
Makar's 90 points, reached tonight, ties his career high in points, set last year (2023-24) with 21g/91a in 77 games played.

Freddie Freeman to miss at least a week after being placed on injured list
Freddie Freeman’s latest ankle issue will keep him out longer than initially expected.
During the Dodgers’ travel day to Philadelphia on Thursday, the team announced Freeman had been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 31.
The moves means that Freeman won’t be eligible to return to action until next weekend, when the club returns home for a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs April 11-13.

Freeman has been out since he slipped in the shower at his home Sunday and fell, aggravating the right ankle he had surgically repaired this offseason in the process.
Freeman experienced swelling in his ankle in the wake of the mishap, and required extensive sessions of treatment from the team’s training staff.
Despite that, he went through two days of routine pregame work this week, while missing all three games against the Atlanta Braves. And the initial expectation was that he would be available for the start of the team’s Philadelphia-Washington D.C. trip Friday.
On Tuesday night, manager Dave Roberts said there was even a 50/50 shot of Freeman being back in the lineup Wednesday.
Instead, Freeman will now go on the IL for the first time in his Dodgers career — and the first time for a non-COVID-19 related reason since he suffered a wrist fracture with the Braves in 2017.
Even before his slip in the shower, Freeman’s ankle — which he sprained in the last week of the regular season last year, and had surgically repaired after playing through the injury during the Dodgers’ World Series run — was not yet back to 100%.
Throughout spring training and the opening week of the season, he still required close to an hour daily pregame treatment. After playing three straight games against the Detroit Tigers last week, he said it was “getting a little stiff” near the end of the series.
Still, Freeman said those issues were “nothing to be ever worried about,” and was hoping the team’s rare Sunday off-day would provide him further reprieve.
Alas, his right foot slipped as he tried stepping into a bathtub-shower. And now, he’ll have to wait at least another week before returning.

Nets' winning streak snapped in 105-90 wire-to-wire loss to Timberwolves
NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Edwards shook off an injury scare and finished with 28 points to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves past the Brooklyn Nets 105-90 on Thursday night for their fourth straight win.
Edwards, who also added five rebounds, appeared to avoid serious injury when he briefly left the game after he stepped backward onto the foot of Nets coach Jordi Fernandez while making a 3-pointer late in the second quarter. Edwards was helped off the court, but returned for the start of the second half.
Rudy Gobert added 21 points for Minnesota while shooting 9 of 10 from the field and adding 18 rebounds.
Nic Claxton had 18 points for Brooklyn and Dariq Whitehead scored 17.

The Timberwolves took the lead with 8:26 left in the second quarter and never looked back. Edwards led his team in scoring with 15 points in the first half to help put them up 49-37 at the break.

Mets' Dedniel Núñez dominates, Blade Tidwell struggles in Triple-A Syracuse
Mets reliever Dedniel Núñez made his second appearance with the team's Triple-A team on Thursday night and was utterly dominant.
In two innings, Núñez allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two batters. The right-hander tossed 29 pitches, 20 going for strikes. This comes after his first appearance where the 28-year-old allowed a run on one hit while striking out two batters in one inning of work.
Núñez came into camp after missing most of the second half of last season with a prolator strain. A shame considering he pitched to a 2.31 ERA in 25 appearances a year ago. He's begun the 2025 campaign in the minors so he can continue to ramp up, but he had a solid spring allowing two runs in two innings of work. If he continues to pitch this way, he'll make his way back to the club sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately for the Syracuse Mets, starter Blade Tidwell was not as sharp.
Tidwell allowed four runs on four hits and three walks across 3.1 innings while striking out four batters. It was the 23-year-old's second start of the minor league season and was a 180 from his first outing. Back on March 28, Tidwell pitched five innings, allowing just one run on one hit and one walk while striking out five.
Tyler Zuber pitched in relief of Tidewell and was perfect through 1.2 innings to give the Syracuse Mets a chance but the offense was just not there.
The Syracuse Mets collected just four hits in total. Two came from Jose Azocar and the other two from Gilberto Celestino.
Among Celestino's two knocks was a solo shot, which accounted for the Mets' only run in their 5-1 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Yankees launch three home runs, hold on for 9-7 win over Diamondbacks
The Yankees' bats roared for three long balls, led by Aaron Judge's three-hit, four-RBI night, which was just enough for New York to hold on to a 9-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
After striking out 30 times in the first two games of the series, the Yankees were more disciplined fanning only seven times.
Here are the takeaways...
-The Yankees were shut out for the first eight innings of last night's game, but they would get on the board early and often thanks to the long ball. Judge launched his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot, to put his team up 3-0. It was Judge's 500th career extra-base hit and he's the third-fastest in franchise history to reach that mark (999 games).
Trent Grisham would drive in the fourth first-inning run with a two-out double that scored Jasson Dominguez. But that wasn't the end of Grisham's night. He would launch a two-run shot in the third (354 ft), depositing a 91 mph fastball down in the zone over the right field wall.
Judge would tack on an RBI single in the fourth before Jazz Chisholm Jr. launched a two-run shot of his own to make it 9-3. All of this came against one of Arizona's top three pitchers, Merrill Kelly. The right-hander allowed all nine runs in just 3.2 innings pitched.
-Carlos Carrasco made his first Yankees start on Thursday after pitching in relief over the weekend. In that appearance, he allowed three runs on five hits across two innings. This start was a lot different. The veteran right-hander cruised through three innings -- allowing a run on a groundout in the second -- but pitched into trouble in the fourth.
After a leadoff walk, a Josh Naylor single and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. double cut the Yankees lead to 6-2. But Carrasco came back by striking out the dangerous Eugenio Suarez before Alek Thomas grounded out to drive in Arizona's third run of the game. One final groundout helped Carrasco escape the fourth with minimal damage.
The 38-year-old left with one out in the sixth, putting a bow on a solid first start in pinstripes. Carrasco went 5.1 innings (82 pitches/55 strikes) allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
-In relief of Carrasco, the Yankees bullpen was mostly good but Ryan Yarbrough in the seventh struggled mightily. He allowed the Diamondbacks to load the bases with no outs before Geraldo Perdomo put a charge into one over the right field wall for a grand slam, cutting the Yankees lead to 9-7. The left-hander did get his next two batters out before he was subbed for Mark Leiter Jr.
This was the right-hander's first appearance since allowing a grand slam in Tuesday's implosion, but he struck out Gurriel Jr. to end the seventh.
-Manager Aaron Boone mixed up his lineup a bit. The changes saw Judge starting at DH with Grisham playing center and Cody Bellinger in right. Ben Rice started at first base -- and led off -- with J.C. Escarra making his first career start behind the plate. And the 29-year-old rookie was in the thick of it on Thursday.
After going hitless in his first two at-bats, Escarra laced a two-out double in the seventh inning for his first major league hit. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Rice struck out with the bases loaded. New York was 3-for-9 with RISP and left eight runners on base.
-After Leiter Jr., Luke Weaver came in for a four-out save and dominated, striking out one batter in his perfect outing.

Judge got the team started on the right foot after a miserable first two games of the series, hitting his first-inning blast and collecting three hits.

Linus Ullmark Shines In Ottawa Senators Crucial 2-1 Win Over Tampa Bay Lightning
Linus Ullmark made 31 saves as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday night. Ridly Greig set up both of the Ottawa goals, and was excellent on both sides of the puck, but it was Ullmark who stole the show in a crucial victory for the Sens.
Shane Pinto and Jake Sanderson provided the scoring for the Senators, who increased their seven point cushion above the Eastern Conference playoff cut line, and maintained their five point lead on the (WC2) Montreal Canadiens. The Habs defeated the Boston Bruins 4-1, the Columbus Blue Jackets were being manhandled late in the game by the Colorado Avalanche, and the New York Rangers were idle.
The Senators were fortunate to escape the first period with a 1-0 lead. Tampa Bay outshot Ottawa 13-8, but many of those shots were of high quality, and Ullmark had to be extremely sharp, a trend he continued throughout the game.
The Senators didn’t get many good looks in the opening frame, but Pinto finished off a three-on-two Ottawa rush with a wrist shot from the slot that beat Andrei Vasilevskiy to make it 1-0. Tampa Bay loudly protested, claiming that Oliver Bjorkstrand had been wronged in the Ottawa zone. Bjorkstrand laid on the ice for the entirety of the rush but didn't get a call.
Just over five minutes into the second period, after Tampa took a too many men call, Jake Sanderson's power play shot from the point made it 2-0.
But less than two minutes later, the Sens got burned by a lazy line change. Brandon Hagel then beat Tyler Kleven to the net to cash in on a rebound to cut the Ottawa lead to 2-1.
Ullmark shut the door after that and was an easy choice as the game's first star, as the Senators were outshot 32-19. It was a fine bounce back for the Sens starter after an average performance against his old team, the Buffalo Sabres, on Tuesday night.
As pointed out by NHL Network analytics guru Mike Kelly, the Lightning outshot the Senators 26-5 from the slot and out-chanced them 11-1 off the rush.
As the Sens creep toward their first playoff spot in eight years, they'll host the Florida Panthers on Saturday night. We already know that Matthew Tkachuk will miss the game with an injury. It will be interesting to see if his brother his ready or not.
