Jayson Tatum’s talent was evident as a 19-year-old rookie, but it wasn’t until his third season with the Boston Celtics that he was able to fully unleash his superstar potential.

The third overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft averaged 30.5 minutes but only 10.5 field goal attempts per game as a rookie. Those numbers increased to 31.1 minutes and 13.1 field goal attempts in Year 2, then in Year 3, Tatum’s professional career took off.

Tatum earned his first All-Star nod in his third season, averaging 34.3 minutes and 18.6 shot attempts per game. Since then, he has been selected to the All-Star Game each year. The 27-year-old has evolved into the face of the franchise, and now, with an NBA championship under his belt, he’s on track to go down as one of the greatest Celtics to ever step on the TD Garden parquet.

In an exclusive interview with NBC Sports Boston’s Brian Scalabrine, Tatum opened up about his growth from quiet-but-confident rookie to NBA superstar. While admitting that he wanted the ball more early in his career, he acknowledged that former Celtics coach Brad Stevens may have been right to bring him along slowly.

“My career has went as well as I could have ever thought or imagined,” Tatum told Scalabrine. “Yes, when I was younger, I was a 19-year-old rookie, and I felt like I could have been doing more. Brad (Stevens), like, ‘Yo, put me in better positions, give me the ball more.’ Like, as a young player, I had that confidence in myself that I wanted more. And again, I’ve started every game of my career, I’ve played 30 minutes, I’ve been on the floor. And maybe Brad was bringing me along at the right speed, and he knew more than I did.

“So when I was younger, yeah, I wanted more. Where I’m at now, I love how everything has played out and I love where I’m at and I love the things that I’ve accomplished. And we won. We got one. So I’m not content because we want to win some more, but I think it worked out how it was supposed to.”

Tatum took a backseat to superstar Kyrie Irving for the first two years of his C’s tenure. Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Gordon Hayward, Marcus Morris, and a young Al Horford also had important roles, preventing Tatum from fully taking over.

But over the last half-decade, Tatum and Brown have established themselves as arguably the best duo in the NBA. The tandem propelled the Celtics to one of the best seasons in franchise history en route to the 2024 NBA championship, and they’re well on their way to making another run in 2025.

The Celtics, boasting a 58-20 record with four regular-season games remaining, will visit the New York Knicks on Tuesday. Barring a shocking finish to the campaign that would require the first-place Cleveland Cavaliers to lose their remaining four games, Boston will enter the 2025 postseason with the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Red Sox All-Star Jarren Duran says he attempted suicide during mental health struggles

Boston’s All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran said he tried to take his own life as he struggled with his mental health during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

In the Netflix docuseries The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox the 28-year-old said struggles with his form during his rookie season in 2021 deeply affect him. His life was saved when he tried to shoot himself but the gun did not go off.

“I was already hearing it from fans,” Duran says in the series, which premieres in the US on Tuesday. “And what they said to me, [it was like], ‘I’ve told myself 10 times worse in the mirror.’ That was a really tough time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore.

“... I got to a point where I was sitting in my room, I had my rifle and I had a bullet and I pulled the trigger and the gun clicked, but nothing happened. So, to this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off. I took it as a sign of, ‘I might have to be here for a reason’, so that’s when I started to look myself in the mirror after the gun didn’t go off. I was like, ‘Do I want to be here or do I not want to be here?’ That happened for a reason and obviously, you’re here for a reason so let’s be the way you want to be and play [the way] you want to play and live the way you want to live.”

Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy praised Duran’s honesty. “Jarren’s decision to share his story is an act of courage that reaches far beyond baseball,” Kennedy said in a statement. “By opening up, he’s showing others who may be struggling that they’re not alone and that asking for help isn’t just OK, it’s essential.”

Duran said he now journals to maintain his mental health and writes reminders to help himself focus.

“On [the tape on] my left wrist, I write, ‘Fuck ‘em,’ because it’s me telling my demons, ‘You’re not going to faze me’,” Duran says in the docuseries. “And on my right wrist, I write, ‘Still alive’ because I’m still here and I’m still fighting.”

Duran had the best season of his career in 2024 and was named an All-Star for the first time, recording career highs in home runs (21), runs (111), RBI (75) and stolen bases (34). He was also suspended two games for shouting a homophobic slur at a fan who heckled him. Duran later apologized for using what he called “a truly horrific word” and issued an apology to the LGBTQ community.

MLB Team Power Rankings: The NL West rules

We have some movement, people. While I was reluctant to make any major changes to our MLB Power Rankings after the opening weekend of the season, you’ll see some dramatic shakeups this week.

The NL West has been the best division in baseball so far, with the Giants off to their best start since 2003. They’ll be tested in short order, though, as San Francisco will soon embark on a 10-game road trip against the Yankees, Phillies, and Angels.

The Dodgers are…human? In addition to being handed their first two losses this weekend by the Phillies, they lost Blake Snell due to left shoulder inflammation.

2) Philadelphia Phillies

After taking two out of three from the Dodgers this weekend, the Phillies will now try to bury the struggling Braves even further in the NL East.

3) San Francisco Giants ⬆️

Last week: 18

Credit to the Giants, who actually have a better winning percentage than the Dodgers at the moment. The club swept the Mariners over the weekend, with Wilmer Flores providing the walk-off hit on Sunday.

On a side note here: Seeing real life buddies Willy Adames and Julio Rodríguez one-up each other during the series was a treat.

4) Texas Rangers ⬆️

Last week: 8

The Rangers have the best record in the American League despite hitting just .192 as a team so far.

5) New York Yankees ⬆️

Last week: 6

Frustrating loss on Sunday notwithstanding, the Yankees’ bats continue to mash. They lead the majors with 25 home runs and nobody has hit more than Aaron Judge, who has six.

6) Boston Red Sox ⬇️

Last week: 4

Rafael Devers is going to be fine. After the brutal start to the season which we mentioned last week, Devers is 10-for-19 (.526) with a homer, three doubles, seven RBI and a 2/5 K/BB ratio over his last five games.

7) New York Mets

Last week: 7

The Mets’ bats haven’t hit their stride just yet, but the pitching staff is picking up the slack with an MLB-best 1.91 ERA through nine games.

8) San Diego Padres ⬆️

Last week: 11

Not a bad week for Jackson Merrill. Days after securing a nine-year, $135 million extension, Merrill slugged a two-run homer as part of a comeback win over the Cubs on Sunday. In doing so, he became the youngest player in Padres history to reach 100 career RBI, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

9) Chicago Cubs ⬆️

Last week: 13

With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. getting his $500 million extension with the Blue Jays, Kyle Tucker is sitting pretty for a similar if not better payday this winter. The Cubs couldn’t have asked for much more from their prized offseason addition, as he’s hitting .319 with five homers and an NL-best 15 RBI.

10) Arizona Diamondbacks ⬇️

Last week: 5

Corbin Burnes is off to a shaky start this season and Ketel Marte just hit the injured list with a left hamstring strain.

11) Atlanta Braves ⬇️

Last week: 3

No team has ever made the postseason after starting the season 0-7. With expanded playoffs, there’s still a good chance the Braves can be the first, but no question this is pretty ugly.

12) Houston Astros ⬇️

Last week: 9

The Astros came back from six runs down to defeat the Twins on Sunday afternoon. That’s very on brand for Houston-based teams this weekend.

13) Baltimore Orioles ⬇️

Last week: 10

The Orioles’ bats have gone quiet over the past week, but it's likely just a matter of time with Gunnar Henderson back in the fold.

14) Detroit Tigers ⬆️

Last week: 16

The Tigers did what they were supposed to do over the weekend, sweeping the White Sox to climb to the top of the AL Central. Spencer Torkelson provided the walk-off winner on Sunday as his hot start to the season continues.

The Brewers are hanging tough despite yet another injury in their rotation, this time with Nestor Cortes dealing with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow once again.

The Blue Jays were swept by the Mets this weekend as their offense continues to struggle, but who cares about that? Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is staying with Toronto for the long haul!

Kris Bubic was a popular breakout candidate during spring training and he’s backed up the hype so far this season with a 0.71 ERA through his first two starts.

Victor Robles might have made one of the best catches of all-time on Sunday. Unfortunately, he injured his shoulder in the process and could be looking at an extended absence.

Logan O’Hoppe homered again on Sunday, becoming the first player in Angels history to homer in four straight games as a catcher.

Four straight losses for the Rays, who will now play at Steinbrenner Field for the next two weeks as they try to squeeze in as many home games as possible before the summer months.

21) Cleveland Guardians

Last week: 21

Everyone knows that José Ramírez is great, but he still might be the most underrated superstar in the game. He slugged his way to the second three-homer game of his career on Friday against the Angels.

22) Minnesota Twins ⬇️

Last week: 15

The Twins’ 3-6 record is not a matter of bad luck. Minnesota’s starters have combined for an MLB-worst 6.98 ERA while their offense is hitting just .198 as a team.

23) St. Louis Cardinals

Last week: 23

That hot start feels like a distant memory already. Iván Herrera has been a bright spot so far, including a three-homer game of his own against the Angels on Wednesday, but he’s expected to land on the injured list after leaving Sunday’s game with left knee inflammation.

24) Athletics

Last week: 24

How soon until 2024 first-rounder Nick Kurtz makes his MLB debut? The 22-year-old first baseman is off to a monster start with Triple-A Las Vegas, hitting .412 with four homers and 12 RBI through eight games.

25) Cincinnati Reds ⬇️

Last week: 20

The Reds’ offense finally broke out against the beleaguered Brewers’ pitching staff on Saturday, but it has been some rough sledding so far, including a recent 35-inning scoreless streak.

26) Washington Nationals

Last week: 26

Dylan Crews finally got his first hit of the season on Friday and followed that up with two hits and a stolen base on Sunday. The Nats have won back-to-back games, but get a tough test to begin the week with a series against the Dodgers.

27) Pittsburgh Pirates ⬇️

Last week: 25

The Pirates might have won on Sunday but it was an embarrassing day for the organization.

To be fair, Pirates president Travis Williams owned up to the mistake and the team plans to restore the Clemente tribute. Kudos for the quick response, but it never should have happened in the first place.

28) Miami Marlins

Last week: 28

While it happened as part of a 10-0 loss to the Braves on Friday, Max Meyer struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing three runs over six innings. The 2020 first-rounder has had an encouraging start to the year after a shaky return from Tommy John surgery in 2024.

29) Colorado Rockies

Last week: 29

The Chase Dollander Era is upon us. It’s easy to forget how hyped Jon Gray was when he was first called up, but Chase Dollander might be the best homegrown hope yet from a pitching perspective. Boy, do they need it.

30) Chicago White Sox

Five straight losses for the White Sox after a nice start to the season. They are who we thought they were.

NHL Rumor Roundup: The Bruins Have An Aggressive Off-Season Ahead

The Boston Bruins had a nice run among the NHL's top teams.

From 2017-18 to 2023-24, the Bruins were consistently among the top 10 teams, reaching the Stanley Cup final in 2019, winning the Presidents' Trophy twice, and setting single-season records with 65 wins and 135 points in 2022-23.

However, it all unravelled quickly this season. They failed to suitably address the departures of core veterans, leaving them battling to remain in the wild-card race.

Management waved the white flag by the March 7 NHL trade deadline, shipping out Brad Marchand, Charlie Coyle, Brandon Carlo and Trent Frederic. Those moves sent the Bruins to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings for the first time since 1996-97, eliminating them from the 2025 post-season race.

The Bruins still have high-scoring superstar right winger David Pastrnak, stud defenseman Charlie McAvoy and starting goaltender Jeremy Swayman under long-term contracts. Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic believes they should build around that trio going forward.

Shinzawa cited the Washington Capitals as a template for Bruins management to stage a quick roster turnaround. They were trade deadline sellers two years ago but also made several notable additions over the past two years.

Those additions included center Pierre-Luc Dubois, defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Rasmus Sandin, and goaltender Logan Thompson. They have become key factors in the Capitals' surprising rise to the top of the Eastern Conference this season.

Appearing on Daily Faceoff last week, Ty Anderson of Boston's 98.5 The Sports Hub said he believed the Bruins could be aggressive in this summer's free-agent market.

The Bruins have a projected salary-cap space of $27.1 million with 13 active roster players under contract for next season, with RFA Morgan Geekie as the only core player to be re-signed. They can afford to re-sign Geekie and their other five RFAs and have enough left to make a splash in this summer free-agent market.

Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks, Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets and Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers are this summer's top potential UFAs.

Despite their cap room, the Bruins could face a bidding war with other teams for those players. They could consider the offer-sheet route in hopes of prying away a talented young RFA from another club. Targets could include Minnesota Wild center Marco Rossi, Toronto left winger Matthew Knies and Buffalo Sabres left winger JJ Peterka.

To most NBA analysts and pundits, Warriors forward Draymond Green is one of the league’s best defenders — if not the best — and can shut down any top player.

But after Green got into it with All-Star center Alperen Şengün during the Warriors’ 106-96 loss on Sunday night at Chase Center, former NBA player and current Houston Rockets color analyst Ryan Hollins had some pointed words for the Golden State forward.

“That’s ridiculous,” Hollins said on the Rockets’ Space City Home Network broadcast as Green was assessed a technical foul for shoving Sengun before Houston could inbound the ball (h/t Awful Announcing). “Look at him. The ball’s not in bounds. He’s just trying to get in Şengün’s head. He knows he can’t guard him to save his life.”

Şengün believes Green’s technical foul was the turning point in the game.

“I think that was the moment we won the game because everybody got heated up and we responded well,” Şengün told reporters. “I think they were trying to scare us to play softer. But you just play harder after that and just help my team.”

Green later picked up a Flagrant 1 foul for elbowing Şengün in the face while going up for a layup.

Green is making a strong push for a second-career NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, but Hollins clearly believes second-year Rockets wing Amen Thompson should take home the honor.

To Thompson’s credit, he shut down Steph Curry and held the two-time NBA MVP to three points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field. Curry was 0 of 3 from the field when guarded by Thompson, per NBA.com’s advanced metrics.

But according to those same advanced metrics, Şengün made 3 of 8 shots and scored seven of his 19 total points when defended by Green during Sunday’s game.

So, Hollins’ theory that Green can’t guard Şengün might have played well to Rockets fans watching the game, but the numbers show that the Warriors forward can hold his own.
