‘My call’: India captain Rohit Sharma insists he was not axed for fifth Test

A defiant Rohit Sharma says he made the call to drop himself for the fifth Test in Sydney, insisting he was not axed by selectors. Speaking for the first time since falling out of India’s side for the decisive Test against Australia at the SCG, India’s captain also rejected any suggestion his career was over.

India had refused to say whether Rohit would play the fifth Test against Australia in the lead up, after a series where he has scored 3, 6, 10, 3 and 9. His replacement as captain, Jasprit Bumrah, stated at the toss Rohit had “opted out” of the match and decided to “rest” from the series decider.

USA to face Poland for United Cup title, Sabalenka and Osaka advance to finals

Former champions the United States returned to the final of the United Cup mixed team tournament with a fortuitous victory over the Czech Republic on Saturday and set up a title clash with Poland, who hammered Kazakhstan.

Tomas Machac looked set to draw the Czechs level at 1-1 in their semi-final and was serving for the contest against Taylor Fritz, but an apparent cramp took its toll and he lost three straight games before throwing in the towel at 7-6 (4), 5-6.

Jaden Zimmerman scored 16 points as Quinnipiac beat Saint Peter's 59-46 on Friday night. Zimmerman shot 6 for 13, including 3 for 6 from beyond the arc for the Bobcats (7-7, 3-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Khaden Bennett scored 13 points, shooting 4 for 10 (1 for 5 from 3-point range) and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line.

Jordan Jones scored 26 points as Central Connecticut State beat Saint Francis (PA) 74-59 on Friday night. Jones shot 11 for 15, including 4 for 7 from beyond the arc for the Blue Devils (10-4, 1-0 Northeast Conference). Devin Haid scored 18 points while shooting 6 for 15 (1 for 6 from 3-point range) and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line and added eight rebounds.

John Blackwell scores 32, Wisconsin makes program-record 21 3-pointers in a 116-85 victory over Iowa

John Blackwell set career-highs with 32 points and six 3-pointers, and Wisconsin finished with a program-best 21 makes from behind the arc in a 116-85 victory over Iowa on Friday night. Markus Ilver tied Wisconsin's team record of 18 3-pointers in a game with 2:48 left and Xavier Amos got a friendly roll at 1:54 to set the record. Amos added another 3-pointer and Camren Hunter sank one with 21.7 seconds left.
