LA Galaxy see off New York Red Bulls for record-extending sixth MLS Cup title

Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic each scored early to lift the LA Galaxy to their record sixth MLS Cup title and first since 2014 in a 2-1 victory over the visiting New York Red Bulls in Saturday’s final in Carson, Calif.

Paintsil’s fourth goal of the playoffs and Joveljic’s sixth helped the Galaxy prevail despite missing attacking midfield star Riqui Puig, who suffered a torn ACL helping LA to a Western Conference final victory over Seattle last Saturday.

Whitt scores 14, Belmont beats Middle Tennessee 82-79

Carter Whitt scored 14 points as Belmont beat Middle Tennessee 82-79 on Saturday. Whitt also added eight rebounds, eight assists, and three steals for the Bruins (8-2). Isaiah Walker also scored 14 points while going 6 of 12 and 2 of 4 from the free-throw line while they also had eight rebounds.

No. 18 Pitt squeezes by Virginia Tech 64-59

The No. 18 Pitt basketball team trailed for much of its game on Saturday, but made a late push, and figured out a way to pull out a 64-59 win over Virginia Tech as Cassell Coliseum. The Panthers improved to 8-2 on the year with the win and grabbed their first ACC win of the season in the process. Jaland Lowe scored 11 of his 19 points in the final four minutes of the game, including a go-ahead layup with 50.7 seconds remaining to put his team up for good.
