Sabres Get Cheeky With Social Media Schedule Reveal
The Buffalo Sabres are following in the footsteps of other NHL clubs in using social media in an irreverent and even trollish manner. On Tuesday in advance of the NHL regular season schedule release, the club revealed references of the 31 other clubs they will be facing as chicken wings.
A few of them were quite humorous, such as the Winnipeg Jets showing the fuselage of a jet with two flats as the planeâs wings, the Boston Bruins with a drumstick sticking out of a bowl of New England Clam Chowder, or the Florida Panthers wing with a tail of BBQ sauce with the title âRatâ attached.

Six Former Sabres Who Signed Elsewhere
A few of the photos have a painful yet poignant reference to Sabres history, as the Dallas Stars entry was titled âNo Wingâ with wing sauce just inside the crease as an homage to Brett Hullâs Cup-winner in 1999 that should not have counted, but there are a few that seem to be not-so-subtle jabs.
Our schedule drops tomorrow...so here are our opponents as wings. đ§”

The Vancouver Canucks âBrother, Where Art Thouâ has one wing painted in Canucks blue on the left side of the plate, in reference to Canucks captain Quinn Hughes on the West Coast, and two wings representing New Jersey âs Luke and Jack Hughes on the right side of the plate. The archrival Toronto Maple Leafs were represented by a drumstick doused with maple syrup and it was titled âChoking Hazardâ. The Leafs have not advanced past the second round since 2002, but that is ironic coming from the Sabres, who have not made the playoffs since 2011.

Former Blackhawks Forward Signs With Canadiens
Former Chicago Blackhawks forward Joe Veleno has found his new home, as he has signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Montreal Canadiens.
Veleno, 25, was traded by the Chicago Blackhawks to the Seattle Kraken last month in exchange for forward Andrei Burakovsky. However, Veleno ended up not being a part of the Kraken's plans, as they bought him out shortly after. Now, after spending over two weeks on the market as an unrestricted free agent (UFA), he has found his new team with the Canadiens.
Pen to paper! The Canadiens have agreed to terms on a one-year, one-way contract with forward Joe Veleno.

News release â #GoHabsGo | Montblanc Boutique MontrĂ©alhttps://t.co/CUE2zccT15
Veleno's time with the Blackhawks was short, as he was acquired by Chicago at the 2025 NHL trade deadline in exchange for Craig Smith and Petr Mrazek from the Detroit Red Wings. Veleno appeared in 18 games with the Blackhawks following the move, posting three goals, seven points, 46 hits, and a minus-9 rating in 18 games. This was after he had five goals and five assists in 56 games with Detroit before the trade.
With the Blackhawks having plenty of centers, it is understandable that they moved on from Veleno this off-season. Now, he will look to make an impact and take that next step in his development with the Canadiens after signing this one-year deal.

Could Witherspoon pitch for Boston in 2026? His college coach thinks so
Could Witherspoon pitch for Boston in 2026? His college coach thinks so originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
The Boston Red Sox selected one of the most MLB-ready prospects in the 2025 MLB Draft with their first-round pick.
Oklahoma right-hander Kyson Witherspoon, widely considered a top-10 draft prospect, fell into Bostonâs lap at No. 15 overall. The 20-year-old was arguably the No. 1 right-handed pitcher in his class.
Witherspoon boasts a fastball that peaks at 99 mph, and his curveball, slider, and cutter each are 60-grade pitches that fooled college hitters last season. He finished the 2025 campaign with a 2.65 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 124 strikeouts, and just 23 walks over 16 starts (95 innings).
Baseball America listed Witherspoon as one of 12 prospects from this yearâs draft who could make their MLB debut in 2026. Oklahoma head baseball coach Skip Johnson agreed with that assessment, citing Witherspoonâs impressive pitch repertoire and work ethic.
âA hundred percent, I think he can do that,â Johnson told NBC Sports Boston. âHis fastball command and his secondary command really will help him a lot with that, and thereâs no doubt about that. ⊠I think heâs got that mindset of, heâs got so much conviction in what he does and how he goes about his business. Heâs really routine-oriented. I mean, heâd get to the field to do his mobility. It was really unique watching him. He would stay in there hours after a start, you know, a Friday night, and get his mobility stuff, get his work done.
âWhat was really unique, I took a video of him, it was three weeks after our season, we had a recruit in. He came up there, and on a Sunday, it was like 1, 1:30, 2:00 in the afternoon, and (Witherspoon) was working on his mobility, working on doing his workouts and stuff like that, getting him ready to play. I was like, âWow, his mindset is elite.'â
Witherspoonâs stuff speaks for itself, but heâll have to clean some things up in the minors before the Red Sox feel comfortable putting him on a big-league mound. Johnson identified areas for Witherspoon to work on as he transitions to pro ball.
âI think one thing is holding runners. Heâll get better at that,â Johnson said. âItâs a really simple thing for him. Continue to develop a tunneling system for him that works for him. Anything that could happen into a game. I kind of always looked at it like, Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods back in his heyday, he could get up and down from anywhere. Thatâs kind of like Kyson. When you get to the big leagues, you gotta be able to learn how to pitch with your C game and get five or six innings. Learn how to pitch with your B game and get six or seven innings. When your A gameâs going, it doesnât matter, youâre gonna throw six, seven, eight, nine already.
âSo understanding those things, because thatâs gonna happen to you. The crazy thing about baseball, you make a quality pitch and it might hit off the end of the bat and things might happen in the game. Just understanding itâs really just about one pitch and continue that mantra going in, âHey, Iâm just trying to win as many pitches as I can as I go through this game and control myself.â
Witherspoon started his college career at Northwest Florida State College in 2023. After one season, he transferred to Oklahoma and began working with Johnson on improving his secondary pitches.
âWe had a lot of work to do coming in from junior college,â Johnson said. âHe had fastball command, thatâs one thing that he always had. He had a good arm, he had fastball command. He didnât really have a breaking ball. He kind of started working on the slider. That got him through the first year, and his growth really kind of started then.â
In his first season with the Sooners, Witherspoon recorded a 3.71 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP, 90 strikeouts, and 40 walks. He took his game to another level in 2025, and his college coach believes heâll only continue to grow from here.
âWe kind of started working on the mental game, understanding how to go pitch to pitch, understanding what releases are when something bad happens to you, to release and get to the next pitch,â Johnson added. âI think thatâs what really separated. Learned a cutter, changeupâs still a work in progress. And then, in January, weâre sitting there, and we actually talked about it his freshman year, his sliderâs really conducive for him to throw a curveball. In November he played with it, in January we started adding to his bullpens and kind of adding to his game. And at the end of the spring, he used it a lot more.
âSo it was kind of one of those deals they couldnât sit on just one pitch or two pitches. He could go through the lineup and understand, this is what Iâm gonna go through, show them right here in the first time through the lineup, second time through the lineup. I think thatâs the biggest thing is he grew so much in how he adapted from pitch to pitch and inning to inning, lineup for the first time, the second time. And his will is whatâs really incredible, and his poise is what really makes him unique.â
The Red Sox shouldnât rush Witherspoon to the majors, but all signs point toward him being Bostonâs most exciting pitching prospect since Brayan Bello. Johnson also described Witherspoon as a âculture changer,â so it sounds like the young gun is close to MLB-ready both on and off the field.
Witherspoon was the first of 15 pitchers selected by the Red Sox in the 2025 MLB Draft.
Important Dates to Watch in Sharks' 2025-26 Schedule
The San Jose Sharks announced their schedule for the 2025-26 season on Wednesday morning. There will be quite a few interesting games to keep an eye on this season, whether itâs due to storylines surrounding the game or one of the Sharksâ many promotional nights.
First off, the Sharks announced a total of 11 promotional nights.
While the NHL will host regular season games starting on October 7, Sharks fans will have to wait a couple of more days. Opening night will be against the Vegas Golden Knights, and their newest addition Mitch Marner, on October 9. Then theyâll have a WWE-themed collaboration against the Anaheim Ducks on October 11, and the annual Los Tiburones Night will take place against Erik Karlsson and the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 18.
Next, the Sharks will have three promotional nights within a week in late November. Against the Senators on the 22nd, theyâll have Sharkpop x Anime Night. Next Gen Night will be against the Boston Bruins three days later. Lastly, on the 28th, Youth Hockey Appreciation Night will see the revival of Ryan Reavesâ rivalry with Evander Kane as the Sharks host the Vancouver Canucks.
After a month without any promotions in December, the Sharks have three in January. Theyâll start with the San Jose Earthquakes Bay Area Unite on the 5th against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Then itâll be First Responders Appreciation Night on the 10th against the Dallas Stars, and lastly, the 49ers Bay Area Unite game will be against the New York Rangers on the 25th.
The final two promotions will be Educators Appreciation Night on February 28 against the Edmonton Oilers, and the annual Fan Appreciation Night on April 11, the final home game of the season, against the Canucks once again.
Now that weâve gotten the promotional nights out of the way, letâs take a look at some games that will be surrounded by some important storylines.
First, if Michael Misa makes the Sharks roster, there could be the first battle of the top picks in the 2025 NHL Draft on October 21 as the team in teal will visit Matthew Schaefer and the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. The rival Los Angeles Kings will then make their first appearance in the Bay Area a week later on October 28.
The back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers will make their only appearance in San Jose on November 8. Looking ahead to December, Alexander Ovechkin will be at SAP Center for the first time since breaking Wayne Gretzkyâs goal-scoring record last season when the Washington Capitals visit on December 3.
Dmitry Orlov will return to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the first time since leaving the Carolina Hurricanes organization, on December 7. Meanwhile, there will be two more revenge games when Ryan Reaves returns to Toronto on December 11 before Alex Nedeljkovic returns to Pittsburgh for the first time two days later on the 13th.
Jeff Skinner and John Klingberg will head to their former stomping grounds, Rogers Place in Edmonton, for the first time on January 29, just a few days before Philipp Kurashev faces off against his old linemate Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center on February 2.
The Sharks and the rest of the NHL will take a break from February 11-22 as the league sends its players to the Olympic Games for the first time in over a decade. Action at the SAP Center will resume on February 26 as the Sharks host the Calgary Flames.
The aforementioned Schaefer will make his first-ever trip to the Bay on March 7, when Patrick Roy and the Islanders come to town.
Adam Gaudette and Nick Leddy will have to wait quite a while to visit their old homes, as the Sharks will head to Canadaâs capital in a matinee affair on March 15. Then, nearly two weeks later, Leddy will visit the team that placed him on waivers, the St. Louis Blues, on the 26th. Henry Thrun will return to the SAP Center for the first time since being traded to the Maple Leafs on April 2.
The Sharks will finish the regular season with a three-game road trip as they head to Nashville, Chicago, and Winnipeg, with the final game set to be played on April 16.
There will certainly be a lot to keep an eye on this coming season, and more storylines will certainly come up as the season progresses. Over the course of the seven-month season, weâll undoubtedly see players make their NHL debuts, unexpected homecoming games as players are traded away and acquired, and of course, once we know how good, or bad, this Sharks team will be, there will be games with major implications in the standings and for the draft lottery.
Although it seems as though hockey is far away, Sharks fans have less than three months until regular season hockey starts up again.

Two Canadiensâ Goaltenders In Wheelerâs Top 20 Drafted Goaltending Prospects
After releasing his Top 100 drafted prospects, The Athleticâs Scott Wheeler has not released his top 20 drafted goaltender prospects list. The last time Wheeler released his bi-annual list in February, the Montreal Canadiens had two netminders on it: Jacob Fowler, who was ranked at number two, and Jakub Dobes, who stood at number 13.
Five months later, Fowler remains in second place, while Dobes has dropped to number 19. It was never in doubt that Fowler would be able to at least hang on to the second place, since his sophomore season at Boston College in the NCAA was even better than his rookie season, which is no small feat. His goals-against average dropped from 2.14 to 1.63, and his save percentage improved from .926 to .940. He also posted seven shutouts, compared to three as a rookie.
Wheelerâs Top 100 Drafted Prospect List Features Three Canadiens Players
Report: Ex-Leafs Kadri Would Be Willing To Join Canadiens
Canadiens: Juraj Slafkovskyâs Could Use The Patience Once Afforded To Guy Lafleur
A third-round pick in 2023, Fowler is the most exciting goaltending prospect the Canadiens have had since Carey Price, even though the face of the franchise was the fifth overall pick at the 2005 draft. Thereâs another Montreal goaltender who did just fine after being drafted in the third round. You may remember him; Patrick Roy was drafted 51st overall at the 1984 draft.
As things stand, many are hoping Fowler will be the Canadiens' goaltender when their window of opportunity opens, and from what weâve seen so far, thereâs a real possibility that it comes to be.
As for Dobes, Wheeler now believes heâll have a promising career as a second or third goaltender or, in a base case scenario, a 1-B netminder. He had a convincing rise from the NSHL to the AHL and was elevated to the NHL last season following Cayden Primeauâs collapse.
While he had a fantastic start in the big leagues with five consecutive wins, he came back down to earth and struggled a bit, losing seven of his next 11 games. Nevertheless, he ended the season with a 7-4-3 record, a 2.74 GAA, and a .909 SV%. When Samuel Montembeault went down with an injury in the playoffs, he was able to claim one win for the Canadiens and performed well, especially considering the circumstances.
While Fowler will hold the top job in the AHL with the Laval Rocket, Dobes may have to compete for the backup role in the AHL, as newly signed Kaapo Kakko has been clear about his intentions to return to the NHL.

4 Mets prospects on Baseball Prospectus' new top 50 list, including Jonah Tong and Carson Benge
The midseason top 50 prospects list is out at Baseball Prospectus, and four Mets made the cut.
The names:
INF/OF Jett Williams: No. 17
RHP Jonah Tong: No. 29
OF Carson Benge: No. 32
RHP Nolan McLean: No. 34
Williams, 21, is having a terrific season for Double-A Binghamton, where he's slashing .288/.396/.495 with eight homers, 24 doubles, five triples, 26 stolen bases, 52 runs scored, and 31 RBI in 334 plate appearances over 78 games.
He will very likely get promoted to Triple-A Syracuse before the season is over.
Tong, 22, continues to lay waste to hitters in Double-A. He has a 1.83 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 125 strikeouts in 78.2 innings (14.3 K's per nine) over 15 starts.
It's fair to believe that Tong will be promoted to Syracuse relatively soon.
Benge, the Mets' first-round pick (19th overall) in the 2024 MLB Draft, is excelling for Binghamton after spending the first 60 games of the season with the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones.
Overall this season, the 22-year-old is slashing .302/.422/.485 with six homers, 21 doubles, five triples, 57 runs scored, 44 RBI, and 17 stolen bases.
McLean, who turns 24 on July 24, has been dominating for Syracuse and could be on the doorstep of his big league debut.
Overall this season, McLean has a 2.17 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 95 strikeouts in 87.0 innings for Binghamton and Syracuse.
Warriors rookie Will Richard shares wholesome reaction to meeting Steph Curry
Warriors rookie Will Richard shares wholesome reaction to meeting Steph Curry originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
They say donât meet your heroes â unless your hero is your new teammate, that is.
Will Richard experienced that firsthand when he met Steph Curry for the first time this summer, and it was a memory the Warriors rookie certainly will remember forever.
âFor me, I mean, [Curry] was my favorite player growing up, him and Klay [Thompson], so that was definitely a top three moment in my life, and just how it happened,â Richard said Tuesday during an appearance on 95.7 The Gameâs âWillard and Dibs.â âWe were at the first Cali Classic game; I wasnât able to play because the trade hadnât gone through yet, and fans, they were calling me to go sign autographs, so I had to walk past [Curry]. And, you know, heâs Stephen Curry. You donât want to go up and intrude on what heâs doing. So I went up past him by the fans and signed some autographs.
âWhen I was coming down the steps, he came up to me, shook my hand and was like, âWelcome to the Bay. Weâre happy to have you, and Iâm excited to work with you.â So for me, that meant a lot. It was definitely some motivation, because youâre hearing that from a guy that you grew up watching, grew up loving, grew up wanting to be like, so it was definitely some motivation.â
The Warriors traded up to select Richard at No. 56 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft last month, acquiring a former Florida guard who helped the Gators win their first national championship since 2007 last season. Unsurprisingly, hoisting the NABC National Championship Trophy was right up there with meeting Curry in Richardâs list of top three life moments.
âI would probably say winning the natty, and letâs go with being born,â Richard told âWillard and Dibsâ when asked to round out his top three. âItâs been a good few months, for sure.â
Richard is proving his worth so far for the Warriors during NBA Summer League play, averaging 12.4 points on 44-percent shooting with 4.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 2.0 steals across five starts.
While it remains to be seen exactly when or if Richard will join Curry on the NBA roster this fall, itâs nice to know the Warriors star already is well acquainted with his teamâs latest draft pick. And for the 22-year-old rook, the time Curry took to speak with him meant everything.

5 Most Exciting Dates On Chicago Blackhawks Schedule
Now that the 2025-26 schedule is officially out for the Chicago Blackhawks, it is time to start dissecting it. Of course, playing against rivals like the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, and Nashville Predators will always be an exciting experience.
Going up against some of the Eastern Conference teams that Chicago only plays twice a year will also bring added excitement. The Original Six matchups, in particular, always evoke a sense of nostalgia along with great hockey.
In addition to their centennial celebrations, the Blackhawks will have their "Home for the Holidays" promotion again, along with 20 weekend home games, 26 games against division rivals, and some great road trips.
When looking at all 82 games, some stick out more than others. These are the five most exciting dates on the slate:
Blackhawks Open At Panthers - 10.7
On October 7th, the National Hockey League regular season will kick off. The Florida Panthers will begin their title defense against the Chicago Blackhawks in the first game of the season. Ahead of the game, the Panthers will raise their Stanley Cup banner.
Home Opener Vs Canadiens - 10.11
The Chicago Blackhawks will kick off the home portion of their schedule against the Montreal Canadiens on October 11th. This is the first Original Six game that Chicago will host during their centennial celebration. There is sure to be a great celebration on this night.
Frozen Frenzy Vs Senators - 10.28
The NHL will do another version of their Frozen Frenzy on October 28th. All 32 teams will play with staggered start times. The Blackhawks will be one of the later games with the Ottawa Senators in town.
Kane Returns To Chicago (Again) 12.13
On December 13th, Patrick Kane will make his third trip to Chicago as a visitor. It is always a top-tier atmosphere when the Detroit Red Wings are in town, but it gets amped up even further when Kane is on their team.
Toews Returns To Chicago - 1.19
On January 19th, the Winnipeg Jets will be in Chicago. This isn't just any old divisional matchup, however, as Jonathan Toews will be making his return to the United Center for the first time as a player. Chicago will play Winnipeg in Manitoba on October 30th, but the game in Chicago will hold tremendous significance.
In the second half of the season, following the Olympic break in February, the excitement surrounding games will revolve around storylines created throughout the year. A lot of exciting development is expected to take place for certain individuals in 2025-26.

Clippers to land Bradley Beal after Suns buy out his contract
The Clippers will add scoring punch to their lineup by acquiring three-time All-Star Bradley Beal after he clears waivers following a contract buyout from the Phoenix Suns, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed to The Times.
Beal has agreed to a two-year, $11-million deal that includes a player option for the second season. He was owed $110 million over the next two seasons.
Beal, in effect, replaces Norman Powell in the Clippers' lineup. Powell was traded in a three-team deal recently that allowed the Clippers to acquire forward John Collins.
In 13 seasons â the first 11 with the Washington Wizards and the last two with the Suns â Beal has averaged 21.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 46.4% from the field, 37.6% from three-point range and 82.1% from the free-throw line.
Beal, though, missed 58 games because of injuries the last two seasons, when he averaged 17.6 points on 50.5% shooting, 40.7% from deep.
The Clippers' retooled roster includes 7-foot veteran center Brook Lopez, who they added during free agency on a two-year deal.
