'They told me to go play, so I go play.' Austin Reaves can carry the Lakers when asked

Inside a locker room, geography matters and Friday night in Denver, Austin Reaves was in the big seat.

Using the space typically assigned to LeBron James inside the Nuggets’ visiting locker room, Reaves sat closest to the showers, players passing him on their way in and out after they’d fumbled a chance to stun Denver.

Cam Reddish, Christian Koloko, Jordan Goodwin — each one passed by the space only to briefly stop and get a quick word of encouragement from the lone Lakers starter who played Friday night.

They were fully under the watch of Reaves, the unquestioned third member of the Lakers’ big three who nearly carried his team minus James and Luka Doncic to a win in Denver on the second night of a back-to-back minus 60% of its 10-man rotation.

Read more:Austin Reaves' 37-point effort not enough as Lakers fall to Denver in wild finish

But his 37 points, 13 assists, eight rebounds and four steals weren’t enough — numbers so special that they’ve been accomplished only seven other times, Reaves joining Doncic, James, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Pete Maravich, Bernard King and Kenny Anderson as the select few to have done it.

Earlier this year, minus James and Doncic, Reaves scored 45 points with seven rebounds and seven assists, numbers equaled only 25 times in Lakers history by a list of the organization’s greats. Elgin Baylor did it 10 times. Kobe Bryant did it six. Jerry West had at least 45-7-7 four times. Magic Johnson did it once. And then there’s Reaves.

“Looks weird when you see my name up there,” Reaves said after that game against the Indiana Pacers.

Maybe it’s time to stop being so surprised.

For what it’s worth, Reaves isn’t that shocked, having been confident enough to tell people around him he was going to matter for the Lakers as an undrafted rookie on a two-way contract after one day of minicamp.

“I’ve weirdly been confident for a long time,” Reaves said Friday night, his feet and ankles soaking in ice. “It’s just being on the stage for the world to see. But I tell you all the time, I just try to play the game the right way. And when shots fall, it looks good. And when shots don’t fall, everybody’s ready to kill me. Everybody in the locker room did what they had to do to win. And unfortunately, we didn’t get it done.”

The Lakers, in all honestly, probably should have.

They led by three in the final minute after back-to-back steals by Reaves led to transition points, starting with one in which he ripped the ball away from annual most valuable player candidate Nikola Jokic.

The second steal led to a Dalton Knecht dunk, with Knecht landing scarily on his back and head after he lost his grip and slipped off the rim. JJ Redick ran to check on Knecht as Denver called timeout and was late back into his huddle.

The Nuggets came out and attacked Koloko, who rarely plays, Jokic quickly scoring and drawing a foul to tie the game.

“I didn’t have time to really get us the right substitutions and matchups that I would have wanted,” Redick said. “And that’s not a knock on CK, but I just kind of put him in a tough spot knowing that Jokic was going to go quick.”

After Reaves’ jumper rimmed out, Denver created an open Jamal Murray three off a screen from Jokic, and like he’s done multiple times before, the Denver guard hit the game’s biggest shot.

“Losing sucks,” Reaves said. “But I’m happy with what these guys in the locker room did tonight.”

As the Lakers head back to Los Angeles on a four-game losing streak, Reaves’ last two games are one of the few slivers of encouragement after the 26-year-old-guard shook off any rust from a two-game absence because of a calf strain this month. He’s also been dealing with right wrist pain and wore a large ice pack on his shooting arm after he scored 28 against Milwaukee on Thursday.

Friday, James was courtside in Sacramento watching his son Bryce and Sierra Canyon win a state title while he recovers from a groin strain. Starters Jaxson Hayes and Rui Hachimura also were not with the team because of knee injuries. Doncic, who scored 45 against the Bucks, didn’t play because of calf and ankle injury management. Key bench players Gabe Vincent (knee) and Dorian Finney-Smith (ankle) also sat out.

Reaves acknowledged all the absences left him wondering whether he should get one too, with only James having played more minutes for the Lakers this season.

“They told me to go play, so I go play,” Reaves said afterward.

If the Lakers were Reaves’ team Friday, that isn’t expected be the case much longer. The trade for Doncic ensured he’d be the team’s primary creator for the remainder of his contract — and beyond, if the Lakers can keep him. James also will be back to dominate possessions as he’s having an All-NBA-type season, meaning Reaves will be taking a step back and tasked with making the biggest adjustment of the three.

Reaves is a critical part of all that, and finding lanes for him to lead like this — whether he’s in the big seat or not — is a major task for the final month of the regular season.

“Austin has done a great job throughout his career of just like figuring it out. And you don’t always figure it out in a week or a month,” Redick said before Thursday’s game, adding: “There’s a lot of stuff that has happened over the last six weeks. He’s been phenomenal this season. We have a lot of confidence in him as a player. We have a lot of confidence in the duo of him and Luca together. And X-and-O-wise, he’s going to play on ball. He’s going to play off ball. We’ll have a ton of opportunities once we get LeBron back. Those two guys have such great synergy and chemistry. They’re incredibly intelligent players and really understand how to play off of each other.

“And then, I think you’ve seen it when we’ve been whole, the guys have really learned how to play with Luka. And we’ve gotten some good stuff when we’ve been organized.”

Three Playoff-Bound NHL Teams Trending Downward

Stuart Skinner (Kyle Ross-Imagn Images)

When we talk about NHL teams that almost certainly are going to make the Stanley Cup playoffs, there are two distinct kinds of teams. There are squads that look like they’re going to be dynamic powerhouses – think of Florida, Washington, Winnipeg, Dallas, Vegas and Colorado – but there are also playoff-bound teams trending downward. And in this column, we will identify three squads trending downward – the New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers.

The Devils have been waylaid by major injuries to crucial stars Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton, but the truth is, they’ve been a disappointing bunch for months now. For example, since Dec. 27, the Devils have been able to string together three wins in a row just once – in their current three-game win streak. But since Jan. 11, New Jersey has gone 11-10-2. There’s been no extended stretch of excellence to point to with the Devils. Once again, they’re the epitome of mediocrity.

It’s no wonder, then, that Devils fans are worried that New Jersey could fall out of third place in the Metropolitan Division and wind up in a wild-card spot squaring off against elite teams like the Capitals or Panthers in the first round. Would anyone other than Devils diehards bet on New Jersey to make it to the second round of the post-season? We sincerely doubt it. And even when New Jersey was at full strength, they weren’t contending for top spot in the Metro, so it’s hard to envision them doing any damage in the playoffs without Hughes and Hamilton. It’s a bleak picture for the Devils, but it’s an accurate one.

Similarly, in the extremely competitive Central Division, the Wild have tumbled out of third place and are now in the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Earlier this season, the Wild were second in the Central, but like the Devils, Minnesota has also had significant injuries to key players, including superstar winger Kirill Kaprizov, center Joel Eriksson Ek, and defensemen Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin. And their downward trend is visible in the results of their recent schedule.

To wit: since Jan. 11, the Wild have gone 11-12-1 – and since Jan. 30, they’ve gone 7-7-1. So we’re not talking about one or two bad weeks with this team. We’re talking about sustained mediocrity, and Minnesota is now in a standings position where they’d be playing against the Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg Jets or Dallas Stars in the first round. And like the Devils, the Wild are going to be underdogs no matter which of those teams they face in the post-season.

Finally, the Oilers are struggling without any major injuries like the Devils and Wild have had to deal with. Instead, it’s Edmonton’s goaltending and recent all-around funk that is cause for concern for them heading into the playoffs. Since Jan. 27, the Oilers have gone 7-9-1, and after challenging for top spot in the Pacific Division earlier in the season, the Oilers sit just one point ahead of the L.A. Kings for second place in the division.

The Oilers may not fall any further than third in the Pacific, as they’re currently nine points ahead of the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks, but you never know – another couple weeks of disappointing hockey could allow the Flames or Canucks to slip by the Oilers and put Edmonton in a wild-card spot. That would’ve been unthinkable early in the year, but the sub-par play of Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner – who had an .867 save percentage in February and an .876 SP thus far in March – has created uncertainty and doubt in the mind of Oilers fans.

There’s still time for the Oilers, Wild and Devils to turn things around and salvage their season, but there’s not much time – just about one month on the dot. And it’s important to bear in mind that those three teams aren’t playing in a vacuum. Because of their recent struggles, New Jersey, Edmonton and Minnesota essentially have had control of their destiny taken out of their hands. Not only do they now have to improve significantly, but they have to hope the teams ahead of them or just behind them in the standings - in New Jersey’s case, Carolina and Columbus, in Minnesota’s case, Colorado and Dallas, and in Edmonton’s case, the Kings, Flames and Canucks – wind up struggling the rest of the season.

For those reasons, we’re not feeling confident in the Oilers, Devils or Wild this year. Their faults have come to light, and there’s no easy fix for them. And if they do fall easily in the playoffs, no one will be able to say they never saw it coming.

Calgary Flames Recall Dryden Hunt From AHL

Dryden Hunt (Sergei Belski-Imagn Images)

The Calgary Flames have recalled forward Dryden Hunt from the Calgary Wranglers, it was announced Friday.

Hunt, a native of Cranbrook, B.C., has been a key part of the Wranglers this season, collecting 15 goals and 33 assists for 48 points in 48 games. Hunt has also appeared in one game with the Flames, going pointless in the process.

Having turned pro before the 2016-17 season, Hunt has appeared in 231 career NHL regular season games across parts of eight seasons with the Flames, Florida Panthers, Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Colorado Avalanche, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. In that span, he has scored 18 goals and added 33 assists for 51 points.

In his second full season with the Flames organization, Hunt has established himself as a reliable depth player. If an NHL regular goes down with an injury, Flames management knows they can rely on Hunt to come in and play his role well. As Hunt gets another recall, he will once again have the chance to show what he is capable of.

Why Draymond vs. KAT matchup is key to Warriors-Knicks outcome

Why Draymond vs. KAT matchup is key to Warriors-Knicks outcome originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

When the Warriors and Knicks met 11 days ago in New York, New York forward Karl-Anthony Towns was declared out for personal reasons, which prompted a baseless and inappropriate reaction from Golden State forward Draymond Green.

Draymond implied on his weekly podcast that Towns was dodging Warriors forward Jimmy Butler, Towns’ teammate when they were on the Minnesota Timberwolves. The truth? The 7-footer was away to attend a memorial service.

Green’s disrespect for Towns is part of the backdrop Saturday when the teams meet at Chase Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:35. Coverage on NBC Sports Bay Area begins at 4:30 with Warriors Pregame Live, with Warriors Postgame Live immediately following the ABC telecast.

Both players say they have moved on, but this is the first time this season that they will share the court. Green, as in the past, will be the primary defender on Towns, who is in the absence of guard Jalen Brunson (ankle) is New York’s top scorer, at 24.2 points per game, on 54.2 percent shooting from the field, including 42.2 from deep.

Towns, who over his nine-year career averages 22.2 points per game against Green (per statmuse.com), considers himself the best-shooting big man in the NBA. Draymond considers himself the best all-around defender in the league.

Defending KAT is crucial, as he the most efficient scorer on New York’s roster that includes Mikal Bridges (17.5 ppg), OG Anunoby (16.6) and Josh Hart (14.5). Miles McBride, who is replacing Brunson in the starting lineup, is averaging 9.2 points per game – but posted a career-high 29 points at Chase last season.

With Towns bearing an additional scoring burden, and Green, five inches shorter, will have to avoid foul trouble to have a chance to meet that task.

It’s reasonable to believe ego and pride will get involved. Towns chose not to respond to Green’s comments, but Hart spoke up on his behalf.

“I think KAT handled it the right way,” Hart told the New York Post on Friday. “For me, I have my own podcast and all that stuff. Whenever I’m wrong about something, I’ll sit there and say I was (wrong). I wish he kind of did that. Just apologized.”

Draymond, once presented with the facts, did offer a tepid apology.

But that wasn’t the first time he disparaged KAT, so don’t expect him to be anything other than his usual assertive self when they meet on Saturday.

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Thunder to cover:

"While Detroit has played up to competition and exceeded expectations, the Pistons have dropped games to the Clippers and Wizards in two of the past three losses. Coming off a loss to the Wizards is concerning when they beat them by 20 points a few nights prior. It's Thunder or pass."

ICYMI in Mets Land: Clay Holmes to start Opening Day, Kodai Senga debuts 'miracle ball'

Here's what happened in Mets Land on Friday, in case you missed it...

Different Process, Same Result as Red Wings Fall 4–2 in Carolina

11 days after Carolina smothered the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena, the Hurricanes beat Detroit again Friday in at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh.  The game looked different than the Canes' win at LCA, with the Red Wings posing a more serious and sustained threat than they managed in the previous match-up, but in the end the result was the same, with Carolina playing its way to a 4–2 victory.

Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest newsgame-day coverage, and player features

Detroit had to absorb heavy early pressure in the first period, as the Hurricanes flew out of the gate in their signature free-firing, aggressive fashion.  Despite that early push from the home team, it was the visitors who struck first, with Alex DeBrincat nabbing his 31st of the year when the Red Wings forced a turnover on an attempted Carolina zone exit and the diminutive sniper buried a wrister from the outer slot.

The Detroit lead was short-lived, however.  Taylor Hall tied the game just 22 seconds into the second period, with Jack Roslovic and Jalen Chatfield following it up to send the game to the third at 3–1 after a period in which the Canes held a 12–6 advantage in shots.

Michael Rasmussen cut that lead to 3–2 early in the final frame with an impressive solo effort, lugging the puck from end to end before dipping his shoulder to sashay around Roslovic.  It took three whacks at the puck to beat Frederik Andersen, but Rasmussen eventually forced home the puck, leaving his team with just over 17 minutes to find an equalizer.

The Red Wings continued to threaten down the stretch, and the third was the only period in which they outshot their hosts (14–11), but Detroit couldn't find the goal it needed, before Eric Robinson hit the empty net to make it 4–2 with just over a minute left, sealing the result.

"I thought the second was the period that really hurt us," coach Todd McLellan told reporters in his post-game remarks.  "The first, you have to weather the storm here.  They come out real hard, we got some good saves, I thought we settled in as the period wore on, scoring certainly helped us, but the second period was unacceptable.  It wasn't just Carolina-inflicted; it was self-inflicted.  It started with the very first shift...some really dumb play on our behalf, so that was self-inflicted...If you don't play your full 60 against these top teams, you're likely going to come out on the losing end."

The Red Wings have now lost six straight to the Hurricanes, with their last win coming on March 30, 2023 at LCA.  McLellan likes to talk about a 'race to three' in the modern NHL, and Detroit hasn't made it to three goals in any of those six defeats.

After the loss, the Red Wings remain two points back of the playoff cut line, with an extra game played and the Rangers and Canadiens both between them and the Blue Jackets (present holders of the second wild card berth in the East).  Detroit will be back in action Sunday afternoon at LCA, hosting the Vegas Golden Knights.

Hernández: Shohei Ohtani home run at Tokyo Dome delivers yet another moment seemingly on command

Tokyo, Japan, Saturday, March 15, 2025 - Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani hits a two run homer in the third inning against the Yomiuri Giants at the Tokyo Dome. (Robert Gauthier/Los Angeles Times)
Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani hits a two-run homer in the third inning against the Yomiuri Giants at the Tokyo Dome Saturday. (Robert Gauthier / Los Angeles Times)

Shohei Ohtani produced on command.

Again.

Just as he did when he played in the World Baseball Classic. Just as he did when he reached the 40-40 and 50-50 homer-steals milestones last season. Just as he did in his first playoff game with the Dodgers.

Technically, the game in which Ohtani played on Saturday night was an exhibition game.

In reality, it was more than that.

Read more:Battling illness, Dodgers' Mookie Betts questionable for Tokyo Series games

Many of the fans who packed the Tokyo Dome paid hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to watch the Dodgers play the Yomiuri Giants. Tickets for the game were selling on the secondary market for upwards of $600.

Years from now, people who weren’t here will claim they were. The people who actually were here won’t be complaining about the outrageous ticket prices.

Moments are what stay with fans, and Ohtani delivered another in the Dodgers’ 5-1 victory.

In his second at-bat of his first game wearing a major league uniform in his home country, Ohtani was thrown a curveball by Giants right-hander Shosei Togo that remained over the plate.

Ohtani pounced on the mistake, launching the ball halfway up the right-field stands.

“It went up at a good angle, so even though it was [hit] a little with the end [of the bat], I thought it would get in,” Ohtani said in Japanese.

In person, the people here witnessed scenes with which they had become familiar on television.

The waving of his hands in the direction of the bench as he rounded the bases.

The tossing of sunflower seeds by Teoscar Hernández.

Ohtani knew the game counted, even though it didn’t.

“So many people came,” he said, “even though it was an exhibition.”

Olympic boxing gender row a result of Russian fake news, says IOC chief

  • Thomas Bach criticises ‘fake news campaign from Russia’
  • Two boxers under scrutiny won gold in Paris

A gender row involving two female boxers at the Paris 2024 Olympics was the result of a Russian fake news campaign and had little to do with reality, the International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, said on Saturday.
Bach, who is stepping down in June after 12 years in the biggest job in world sports, said the IOC had needed to fight off many similar campaigns before and after the Paris Games.
The boxing competition in the Paris was run by the IOC after it stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of recognition last year over its failure to implement reforms on governance and finance. But the IBA, run by the Russian businessman Umar Kremlev with close links to the Kremlin, accused the IOC during the Games of allowing two female athletes, who had been banned by the IBA after a chromosome test a year earlier, to compete.

A war of words ensued between the two organisations and dominated the headlines during the Games. “I would not consider this [Paris Games gender controversy] a real crisis because all this discussion is based on a fake news campaign coming from Russia,” Bach said at the southern Greek seaside resort where his successor will be elected on Thursday. “This was part of the many, many fake news campaigns we had to face from Russia before Paris and after Paris.”

Several such campaigns happened before Paris, including what the IOC said at the time were repeated hacking attempts. Bach said the dispute over the boxers would have been a non-issue were it not for the IBA, given the two boxers had competed for years, including at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, with no problems.

“It [the dispute] has nothing to do with the reality. These two female focuses were born as women, they were raised as women, they have been competing as women, they have been winning and losing as every other person.” The two boxers, Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting, won gold medals in their weight classes.

The IOC does not have a universal rule on the participation of transgender athletes or athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD), with each federation drawing up its own regulations. Russian athletes competed as neutrals in Paris after the Russian Olympic Committee was suspended for conducting Olympic elections in Ukrainian territories occupied after the Russian invasion in 2022.
