The Phillies will have to wait one more day to try and even up their series against the Cardinals.

Tuesday’s 6:45 p.m. matchup at Citizens Bank Park has been postponed due to inclement weather, the team announced.

Wednesday, May 14, will now be split doubleheader. The first game is still slated for a 1:05 p.m. start, with gates opening 11:35 a.m.

Tickets for Tuesday will be valid for the evening slate, with gates opening 5:15 p.m. for the 6:15 p.m. start.

Jesús Luzardo (3-0, 2.11 ERA), originally slated to start Tuesday, will get the afternoon game. Aaron Nola (1-6, 4.89 ERA) will now take the mound in the evening.

Game 1 of the doubleheader will air on both NBC Sports Philadelphia and NBC10. The series finale will only be on NBCSP.

Maple Leafs' Anthony Stolarz Returns To Ice After Injury Scare From Sam Bennett Collision

David Alter - The Hockey News Toronto

Anthony Stolarz is back on the ice, just over a week after he left Game 1 against the Florida Panthers following a Sam Bennett elbow to the head.

The 31-year-old was on the ice before the Toronto Maple Leafs' optional practice on Tuesday morning at Ford Performance Centre. According to TSN's Darren Dreger, this isn't Stolarz's first time on the ice.

"I believe Anthony Stolarz has been on the ice this week," Dreger reported. "Joe Woll was excellent in game 4, so there’s no reason to rush with Stolarz. The fact he’s back on the ice speaks to progress in recovery."

The goaltender was on the ice for at least 20 minutes, working with Maple Leafs goaltending coach Curtis Sanford.  The drills consisted of lateral movements in the butterfly and standing up.

He exited the ice shortly before the Maple Leafs' optional skate began.

Stolarz left midway through Game 1 against the Panthers, a few minutes after Bennett's elbow collided with the goaltender's head. During a TV timeout, Stolarz went over to the bench and threw up before leaving the game.

According to TSN's Chris Johnston, the goaltender was taken out of Scotiabank Arena on a stretcher after leaving the game. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed the day following that Stolarz had gone to the hospital for further evaluation.

Stolarz started in Toronto's first seven playoff games, racking up four wins and a .901 save percentage in that span. After leaving the game, Joseph Woll has come in for the Maple Leafs and put up two wins and a .893 save percentage through four games against Florida.

Toronto won the first two games at home against the Panthers, but lost the next two in Florida. They returned home on Monday with the series tied 2-2.

Stolarz was one of the NHL's top goaltenders in the regular season. He had 21 wins through 34 games, with a .926 save percentage, the best in the league for goaltenders who played more than 30 games.

This is the second time Stolarz has dealt with an injury this season. He missed nearly two months of the season, from mid-December to early February, after having surgery to remove a loose body from his knee.

Top 5 Active 11th Overall Picks In The NHL

Sidney Crosby and Anze Kopitar - Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

The Pittsburgh Penguins will select 11th overall at the upcoming 2025 Draft. Although the club fell out of the top ten, it should still be able to draft a top prospect who can eventually make an impact in the league.

Even though some in the fan base may be disappointed with the Penguins' current draft position, here's a look at the top five 11th overall picks playing in the NHL as of 2025.

5. Gabriel Vilardi (2017 - Los Angeles Kings)

Gabriel Vilardi made his NHL debut with the Los Angeles Kings during the 2019-20 season and eventually became a 20-goal scorer at 23. He was dealt to the Winnipeg Jets before the 2023-24 campaign, where he tallied 22 goals in his only season in Canada.

Ahead of the 2024-25 season, Vilardi moved again to the Metropolitan Division and the Washington Capitals, where he set career highs with 27 goals and 61 points in 71 games.

4. Lawson Crouse (2015 - Florida Panthers)

Lawson Crouse never played for the Florida Panthers, who dealt him a year after drafting him to the Arizona Coyotes. Following his NHL debut in 2016-17, Crouse became a pillar for a young Coyotes team that eventually relocated to Salt Lake City in 2024.

Former Penguin Marc-Andre Fleury Named To NHL Quarter-Century TeamFormer Penguin Marc-Andre Fleury Named To NHL Quarter-Century TeamTwo days after Pittsburgh Penguins' forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were named to the NHL Quarter-Century Team, another longtime former teammate will be joining them.

Crouse, now an alternate captain with his team, is a nine-year veteran and a three-time 20-goal scorer. After 585 regular-season games, he's scored 115 goals and 215 points.

3. Kevin Fiala (2014 - Nashville Predators)

Kevin Fiala debuted at 18 with the Nashville Predators in 2014-15. He spent five seasons with the club that drafted him, securing a 20-goal season in 2017-18. Following his stint with the Predators, he moved to the Minnesota Wild and produced back-to-back 20-goal campaigns before setting a career high with 33 lamp-lighters in 2021-22.

However, the Wild dealt Fiala to Hollywood in 2022, and he's rewarded Kings fans with two 20-goal seasons before breaking his personal best total with 35 goals in 2024-25. Despite 60 points last season, it was his lowest point total since a career high of 85 in 2021-22. During his first season with Los Angeles, he attended the 2023 All-Star Game.

2. Filip Forsberg (2012 - Washington Capitals)

There is an argument to be made here that the Capitals might have kept Filip Forsberg if they had a chance to redo their deal with the Predators.

After drafting Forsberg in 2012, the Capitals dealt him to Nashville for Martin Erat and Michael Latta. In 13 seasons, Forsberg has become one of the top Swedish players in the NHL. He is a two-time 40-goal scorer with five seasons of 30 or more goals and nine with 20 or more.

Filip Forsberg - Credit: Steve Roberts-Imagn Images

Moreover, Forsberg was a member of the 2013 All-Rookie Team, finishing fourth in Calder Trophy voting. He participated in the 2015 and 2024 All-Star Games. After 13 seasons and 780 games, he's tallied 318 goals and 681 points in the regular season and 31 goals and 59 points in 81 playoff games.

1. Anze Kopitar (2005 - Los Angeles Kings)

Anze Kopitar is the only active 11th overall pick with his name on the Stanley Cup, twice. As the captain of the Kings, Kopitar has built a resume that will land him in the Hockey Hall of Fame when he retires.

Crosby, Malkin Named To NHL Quarter-Century TeamCrosby, Malkin Named To NHL Quarter-Century TeamThe votes for the NHL Quarter-Century Team are finally in.

Not only does he own the franchise records for games played and assists, but Kopitar is a two-time Frank J. Selke and Lady Byng Memorial Trophy winner, also winning the Mark Messier Leadership Award.

Arguably the most outstanding player from Slovenia to ever play in the NHL, Kopitar is a three-time 30-goal scorer with 14 seasons of 20 or more goals. If he remains healthy, he's got a chance at becoming the Kings' all-time leading scorer in 2025-26, needing only 29 points to surpass Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne (1,307).

Just Missing the Cut

There were only eight active 11th overall picks in the NHL last season. The three players who didn't make the list were netminder Yaroslav Askarov (San Jose Sharks), who has 16 games of NHL experience, followed by Conor Geekie (Tampa Bay Lightning) with 52 games, and Oliver Wahlstrom (Boston Bruins), who has played 236 games.

Vince Carter to join NBC Sports as NBA studio analyst this fall

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and eight-time NBA All-Star Vince Carter, widely considered one of the best dunkers and most dynamic playmakers in NBA history, will join NBC Sports' NBA coverage as a studio analyst this fall.

Carter will be in studio one or more nights a week through the playoffs when the NBA returns to NBC and debuts on Peacock in October.

“I could not be more excited and appreciative to have the opportunity to be a part of the historic return of the NBA to NBC and now Peacock,” said Carter. “I am truly looking forward to joining Melo in the studio and the rest of the broadcast team overall, as we embark on bringing NBA fans best-in-class coverage of the league they love.”

“Vince is one of the most explosive players in NBA history,” said Sam Flood, Executive Producer, NBC Sports. “His dynamic play on the court has translated seamlessly into his broadcasting career, where he will next be in the studio alongside Carmelo Anthony – a fellow Hall of Famer, perennial All-Star, and Olympic champion who’s also played with or against the stars of yesterday and today.”

Carter currently sits in 10th place on the NBA’s all-time made three-pointers list (2,290) and in the top 25 on the all-time scoring list (25,728). The 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Champion is tied with LeBron James for first all-time with 22 seasons played and is fourth all-time in career games played (1,541).

The legend known as "Half Man Half Amazing" also won a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics while leading the United States with 14.8 points per game.

Carter has served as an NBA and college basketball analyst for ESPN and Turner Sports since retiring, and was also a basketball analyst for NBCUniversal during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The addition of Carter adds another impressive name to NBC and Peacock's NBA coverage that also includes Reggie Miller and Jamal Crawford as game analysts, Carmelo Anthony as a studio analyst, Mike Tirico and Noah Eagle as play-by-play voices and Michael Jordan as a special contributor.

When does NBA on NBC coverage begin?

NBA on NBC coverage will begin in October 2025, with coverage of the 2025-26 season. Peacock will livestream exclusive national Monday night games, while NBC and Peacock will present national coverage of regional doubleheaders on Tuesday nights. In 2026, NBC Sports will launch Sunday Night Basketball on NBC and Peacock, providing three consecutive nights of national coverage during the second half of the regular season.

Former Star, Av Signs Multi-Year Deal In Sweden

Swedish forward Fredrik Olofsson, 28, has signed a three-year contract with Rögle BK, the Ängelholm-based SHL club announced on Monday.

“It’s an honor to have the chance here in Rögle and to play in a team with high ambitions,” said Olofsson. “It will be exciting. The SHL is a demanding league and nothing comes free. I am motivated to be an engine for the team at center and I want to challenge myself to carry a heavy load together with my teammates.”

“I’m very happy and excited to finally see Fredrik in green and white,” said club sports director Hampus Sjöström. “Fredrik has accumulated a lot of experience through playing in different leagues, which will be useful for our group. He’s a responsible player with the ability to make his surroundings better and a great and competitive guy to have in the locker room.”

Olofsson is originally from Helsingborg in southwestern Sweden, about 25 km from Ängelholm and just across the Öresund from Denmark. However, he began playing in the United States at age 14 – first youth hockey in Colorado, followed by two years in the USHL and four years of college hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Olofsson was drafted in the fourth round, 98th overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, and he made his professional debut with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs in the spring of 2019 after finishing his senior year at UNO.

Olofsson spent the next three seasons playing professionally in Sweden – first for MoDo in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan and then two years in the SHL for IK Oskarshamn. During that time, he also played his only significant international hockey to date, recording one assist in six games for Sweden at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Olofsson split the next two seasons between the NHL and the AHL – first with the Dallas Stars in 2022-23 and then with the Colorado Avalanche in 2023-24. Combined, he had 13 points and 10 penalty minutes in 85 NHL regular-season games. He was also pointless in two playoff games for Dallas in 2023.

Last season in Switzerland, Olofsson recorded 30 points in 51 National League regular-season and playoff games for EV Zug.

“My ambitions are crystal clear – winning a championship as a team is the only thing that matters,” Olofsson continued. “How we get there and individual goals we will put together now during the summer. Building a daily operation that spreads good energy while making demands on each other will drive us to the top. Together with Dan (Tangnes, Rögle’s head coach), we will be clear in everything we do and I look forward to that.”

Rögle finished seventh in the SHL regular season last year before being eliminated in the play-in round. Besides Olofsson, players under contract with the team for 2025-26 include NHL prospects Linus Sjödin (Buffalo Sabres), Simon Zether (Florida Panthers), Felix Nilsson (Nashville Predators) and Austrian defenseman Gregor Biber (Utah Mammoth).

NHL Rumor Roundup: Could The Penguins Pursue Rossi? Noah Cates' Future With The Flyers Uncertain?

Marco Rossi and Sidney Crosby (Nick Wosika-Imagn Images)

Speculation about Marco Rossi's future arose following the Minnesota Wild's first-round playoff exit.

The 23-year-old center was the subject of early-season rumors until Wild GM Bill Guerin shot them down last December.

Some observers now wonder where Rossi fits into their long-term plans after spending time on their fourth line late in the season. He's an RFA coming off his entry-level contract and could become an offer-sheet target if extension talks stall with the Wild this summer.

That prompted Pittsburgh Hockey Now's Dan Kingerski to consider the possibility of the Penguins acquiring Rossi during the off-season.

Kingerski believes the young Wild center would fit in well with the retooling Penguins. Evgeni Malkin is expected to retire at the end of next season, leaving a massive hole at the second-line center position.

Pittsburgh GM Kyle Dubas has ruled out signing UFAs to long-term contracts, preferring to acquire RFAs through trades rather than offer sheets. Kingerski acknowledged it could take a healthy return from the Penguins, like the Rangers' 2026 first-round pick (lottery protected) or a top-line veteran winger, such as Bryan Rust or Rickard Rakell.

The Penguins won't be the only club interested in Rossi if the Wild peddle him this summer. Teams seeking a second-line center include the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Vancouver Canucks.

Meanwhile, Noah Cates of the Flyers could become another center of interest in this summer's trade market.

The 26-year-old Cates is an RFA this summer and a year away from UFA eligibility. Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco believes Cates and the Flyers could be heading to arbitration this summer.

Di Marco cited team sources claiming Cates could bet on himself on a one-year deal, taking him up to UFA eligibility. He'd be willing to commit to the Flyers on a long-term deal, but it would be at a price they consider too high. Di Marco indicated that they see him in the range of $ 3.5 million annually on a four- to six-year term.

Report: Jameer Nelson taking another step up in Sixers' front office

Report: Jameer Nelson taking another step up in Sixers' front office  originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

Jameer Nelson is taking another step up in the Sixers’ organization.

The Sixers are promoting Nelson to assistant general manager, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday.

A native of Chester, Pennsylvania, Nelson was an all-time great player at St. Joseph’s and had a 14-year NBA career.

He’s been in the Sixers’ front office since October of 2020, when the team hired him as both a scout and Delaware Blue Coats assistant general manager. Nelson became Delaware’s GM in 2023.

In an interview last April, Nelson told NBC Sports Philadelphia that Sixers GM Elton Brand helped him decide on his post-playing path and “played a huge role in my growth and my front office experience.”

While Nelson’s on-the-floor knowledge is obviously quite useful, he’s adjusted his outlook on player development and team building.

“You definitely have to look through a different lens,” he said. “Getting deeper and understanding that not everybody’s going to be a superstar, so what attributes do they have that could help the Sixers or Blue Coats? And individually, is this person an NBA player? … I think early on I was getting to my conclusion a little too quick. And look, I’m the first to raise my hand and say I need help.

“I think the group has been really good for me, just with picking brains and understanding how other people think. It’s totally different from being a player, because (that’s) like, ‘Can he shoot, can he dribble, can he pass? Put him in positions so he can help the team.’ But you also have to look at things from a broader perspective when you’re in the front office. There’s contracts involved, there’s the salary cap, and there’s roster spots.”

Nelson and the Sixers’ front office will be poring over prospects ahead of the NBA draft on June 25. The Sixers learned Monday night that they own the No. 3 overall pick along with No. 35.

Williams states Steph-less Warriors are ‘outmanned' vs. T-wolves

Williams states Steph-less Warriors are ‘outmanned' vs. T-wolves originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Lou Williams believes the Warriors, without Steph Curry, will be unable to stop the Minnesota Timberwolves from winning their Western Conference semifinal series.

The former NBA player explained why Golden State cannot currently compete against Minnesota’s deep roster.

“They’re a different basketball team without Steph Curry on the floor,” Williams told Michelle Beadle and Chandler Parsons Tuesday on FDTV’s “Run It Back.” “You can see it. They’re doing everything in their power to compete with this Minnesota Timberwolves team; they just don’t have enough. It’s not for lack of effort. It’s not for lack of anything; they’re just outmanned.

“I think Minnesota is playing at a high level right now. Julius Randle is giving them everything that they deserve.”

This stark difference was on full display during the third quarter of Game 4, where the Timberwolves savaged the Warriors, outscoring them 39-17. With Jimmy Butler ineffective for most of the game, Golden State lacked a consistent scoring threat to match Minnesota’s duo of Anthony Edwards and Randle.

Given the nature of Curry’s Grade 1 hamstring strain, it’s unlikely that he will be able to return for a must-win Game 5. Even then, asking the 37-year-old to return from injury and shoulder the scoring for three straight games is too much even for one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.

The rest of Golden State’s lineup has been far too inconsistent beyond Jonathan Kuminga. Without another serious scoring threat, the Warriors have been unable to keep pace now that the Timberwolves have regained their strong shooting form.

The Warriors look like a team running on fumes after a tough play-in game against the Memphis Grizzlies and a draining seven-game series against the Houston Rockets. Unless someone else can get hot and start scoring, Minnesota is poised to walk away victorious in Game 5 on Wednesday at Target Center.

The Mavs’ Cooper Flagg lottery miracle fuels conspiracy theories – and hope

Cooper Flagg is one of the most talented players to come out of college basketball in years.Photograph: Eric Gay/AP

Dallas is ground zero for one of America’s most historic conspiracy theories. Just half a mile from the grassy knoll where John F Kennedy was assassinated on 22 November 1963, sits the American Airlines Center – the newest site of Dallas conspiracy lore.

While this year’s NBA draft lottery took place in Chicago on Monday night, the heart of the drama haunts Dallas. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison’s career lives to see another day after his team improbably beat 1.8% odds to land the No 1 pick in this year’s draft – which they will almost certainly use to pick Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, one of the most talented college players in years. The 6ft 9in wing will presumably usher in the first full season of Dallas’s post-Luka Dončić era. Mavs fans almost have to laugh, or maybe raise a very suspicious eyebrow. With the NBA’s four worst teams (Washington Wizards, Charlotte Hornets, Utah Jazz, and New Orleans Pelicans) all taking a nosedive in the lottery, the storyline is tailor-made for a grand conspiracy theory.

Related: The Luka Dončić-Anthony Davis trade is shocking, franchise-altering and bizarre

The Mavs’ decision in February to trade away Dončić garnered widespread conjecture around the franchise’s owners, the Adelson family, tanking the team to eventually move them to their home base of Las Vegas, where they could add an NBA team to their casino empire. There were also theories around the NBA’s disappointing ratings and what a prodigy like Dončić could do in Los Angeles. Those theories were only amplified by the poor return the Mavericks got in return for Dončić, already widely considered a future Hall of Famer. Online speculation quickly connected Harrison, NBA commissioner Adam Silver and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka in a shadowy quid pro quo: send Dončić to one of the NBA marquee franchises, the Lakers, where he would play alongside the league’s biggest name, LeBron James, and Harrison would be rewarded with the No 1 pick. It’s a tale fit for any great sports conspiracy.

In the real world, Mavs fans have had a hell of a year. They watched their team, which had reached the NBA finals less than a year before, blown apart by their general manager as Dončić, a beloved superstar who had no desire to leave the city, was shown the door. And on the way out, Harrison and the organization disparaged Dončić’s name, weight, commitment and tenure at every turn. Injuries broke apart any hope the fanbase had of reclamation this season, which ended with a disappointing play-in tournament exit. Now, they have a chance at a silver lining, and more importantly, a new chapter in the dismal story Harrison had started to write for the franchise.

There’s a chance the Mavericks could trade the pick, perhaps as the centerpiece in a deal for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is reportedly open to leaving the Milwaukee Bucks. But Dallas fans need the healing only a homegrown star can provide. Drafting Flagg would give Mavericks fans someone with them from the beginning of his career to rally behind, with the same kind of seismic potential Dončić once brought. Trading the pick for another star, in yet another attempt to manufacture a contender through trades, wouldn’t mend the wound left by Harrison’s unraveling of the Dirk Nowitzki-to-Dončić handoff – one that symbolized more than two decades of Mavs continuity. Flagg offers a clean slate, one that finally anchors the present and future after Harrison mortgaged most of the team’s draft capital in the Dončić era.

Mavs fans never deserved Harrison’s mismanagement. The lottery win was a near-impossible stroke of luck. Before Monday night, Mavericks fans braced for a bleak future. Anthony Davis, the return centerpiece for Dončić, has struggled with injuries since arriving. Kyrie Irving is expected to miss the first half of next season recovering from an ACL tear at age 33.

Harrison has been public enemy number one since trading Dončić to the rival Lakers in February. Chants calling for his firing have erupted across Dallas, from college basketball games and concerts to Medieval Times. He avoided his usual seat at the Mavs’ arena. He delayed holding a press conference until forced by Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont. The coffee shop where Harrison and Pelinka first discussed a Dončić trade has marked the infamous table with “Luka was traded here” on a laminated strip. But on lottery night, Harrison was seen leaping with joy when Dallas secured the first pick. Rumors were already swirling that Dumont wanted to bring in a seasoned executive to assist him on basketball decisions. It’s safe to say winning the lottery has saved his job although the blame doesn’t stop with him. He was hired by Mark Cuban, retained by Miriam Adelson, and empowered by Dumont.

Now Harrison and the Mavs have an unexpected chance to rebuild trust with their fans. The Mavericks have historically built through the draft, from Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman in 1981 to Jason Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki, Jalen Brunson, and Dončić. Harrison may be too steeped in his own arrogance to see that. His many tone-deaf comments on the Dončić trade revealed a staggering lack of understanding of the fanbase that pays his checks.

Winning the draft lottery at such odds takes either a miracle or a grand conspiracy. Knowing what to do with the gift you’ve been given should be a no-brainer. We have a little over a month to find out what kind of leader Harrison chooses to be.

Pete Rose reinstated by MLB and is eligible for Baseball Hall of Fame

Pete Rose reinstated by MLB and is eligible for Baseball Hall of Fame originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Pete Rose has officially been taken off MLB’s permanently ineligible list, the league announced Tuesday. Baseball’s all-time hits leader was banned in 1989 after an investigation revealed that the longtime Cincinnati Reds star had placed bets while playing for and managing the team.

The decision makes Rose, who died at 83 last September, eligible to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement that permanent ineligibility “ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual.”

“To establish clarity for the administration of the Major League Rules, the decision in this matter shall apply to individuals in the past or future who are posthumously on the permanently ineligible list,” the league said.

There are 17 deceased individuals impacted by the announcement. Eight of those were part of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal, including “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.

In April, Manfred said he had met with President Donald Trump to discuss topics including how immigration policies could affect international players. Rose also was a point of discussion.

“I met with President Trump two weeks ago … and one of the topics was Pete Rose, but I’m not going beyond that,” Manfred said at the time. “He’s said what he said publicly. I’m not going beyond that in terms of what the back and forth was.”

Trump said on Truth Social in March that he planned on “signing a complete pardon of Pete Rose, who shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on his team winning.

“He never betted against himself, or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in baseball history, and won more games than anyone in sports history.”

After denying he bet on baseball for more than a decade, Rose finally admitted it in an interview with ABC in 2007.

“I bet on baseball in 1987 and 1988,” he said. “That was my mistake, not coming clean a lot earlier.”

In his 2004 book “My Prison Without Bars,” Rose added that he bet on his own team.

“My actions, which I thought were benign, call the integrity of the game into question,’’ Rose said. “And there’s no excuse for that, but there’s also no reason to punish me forever.’’

Rose played from 1963 to 1986 primarily with the Reds but also the Philadelphia Phillies and Montreal Expos. A 17-time MLB All-Star and three-time World Series champion, he has the most hits (4,256), most games (3,562) and most at-bats (14,053) in league history.

Former Montreal Canadiens Player Announces Retirement

Photo courtesy of the Cleveland Monsters

It’s never easy for a professional athlete to announce his retirement, especially when they are forced to do so because of injuries. On Monday, Stefan Matteau, the son of former NHLer Stephane Matteau, announced his retirement.

When The Canadiens Draft Twice (Or More) In The First Round…
Canadiens: The Grades Are In – Mike Matheson
Canadiens: The Grades Are In – Arber Xhekaj

The son was drafted 29th overall by the New Jersey Devils at the 2012 draft and only played 44 games in the organization before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2016 in return for Devante Smith-Pelly.

Matteau played 12 games with the Canadiens registering a single assist before spending the following season with the St. John’s Ice Caps. In 67 games with the Habs’ AHL affiliate picking up 25 points.

He then signed a contract with the Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent, but couldn’t establish himself there either. In the end, he played with their AHL affiliates, the Chicago Wolves before spending time in the Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche organisations.

He spent the 2022-23 season in Europe playing in both the Swedish and the German leagues, before returning to North America where he played two more seasons with the Jackets’ AHL club, the Cleveland Monsters.

In his last two seasons, he was limited to 15 games because of various injuries. He was the Monsters’ captain this past season but couldn’t even play in the post season as he couldn’t get healthy.

His retirement message sounds a bit like Carey Price’s message when he decided to hang them up, Matteau wrote:

“After 13 seasons in professional hockey, I’ve made the difficult decision to retire. As hard as it is to step away from the game I love, nothing is more important to me than being healthy and able to play with my kids for many years to come.”
- Stefan Matteau on why he's retiring.

Hopefully, he can now stay healthy and enjoy retirement with his family.

Miami Heat 2024-2025 fantasy basketball season recap: Tyler Herro shines through Jimmy Butler saga

While the NBA Playoffs are in full swing, now is a good time to recap the fantasy basketball season for all 30 teams.

In the following weeks, we will provide a recap for each team, starting with the team with the worst record and concluding with the NBA champion in June.

With the Jimmy Butler era officially over, Pat Riley has some decisions to make about the future of this team.

Miami Heat 2024-25 Season Recap

Record: 37-45 (10th, East, lost in first round)

Offensive Rating: 106.7 (29th)

Defensive Rating: 115.7 (24th)

Net Rating: -19.1 (27th)

Pace: 98.22 (23rd)

2024 Draft Picks: 20

While the Heat were able to keep their playoff streak alive, this was a disappointing season for the franchise. Their 37 wins were the fewest by the team since the 2014-15 season, which was the year after LeBron James left to go back to Cleveland. Of course, they also traded away Jimmy Butler after his dramatic feud with Pat Riley. It took time for head coach Erik Spoelstra to pick up the pieces, but they were able to close out the regular season well and beat the Bulls and Hawks in the play-in tournament before getting swept by the Cavaliers in the first round.

So where do they go from here? #HeatCulture has been able to keep this team competitive for Spoelstra’s entire tenure with the team, even when they were in between stars. Riley said the team “probably won’t run it back” with what they had this season. The Heat don’t have extra assets to make big moves, but they will likely make chances to improve this team’s chances of winning next season. Don’t expect this team to enter a rebuild.

Fantasy Standout: Tyler Herro

Despite the saga surrounding Jimmy Butler, Herro was able to have the best season of his career. He averaged 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 3.3 three-pointers per game, which led to the first All-Star appearance of his career. Herro provided third-round value and set new career-highs for points, assists and threes per game while also posting the best field goal percentage of his career.

Herro was fantastic in the play-in tournament, though he struggled in Miami’s loss to Cleveland in the first round. Still, with the way the roster is currently constructed, Herro will continue to be the leader on offense moving forward. Is that enough for Miami to contend the way they’d like to? Probably not, but it will work out well for him in fantasy. Herro took a legitimate step forward as a player this season, and he was one of the few players on the Heat who were actually worth rostering in standard leagues.

Fantasy Revelation: Kel’el Ware

As the Heat’s earliest draft pick since Tyler Herro (13), the expectations were high for Ware. The 15th overall pick ended up taking advantage of an increased role and averaged 9.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 22.2 minutes per game as a rookie. Ware’s role was inconsistent, but he had some incredible stretches that provided plenty of optimism for his future in the league.

Miami doesn’t pick early often, but when they do, it tends to work out well. Their last three picks in three picks in the top 15 have been Ware, Herro and Bam Adebayo. As a starter, Ware averaged 10.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 28.4 minutes per game. Having him as a center alongside Adebayo was an experiment that worked out well. The Heat haven’t had much center depth when Bam isn’t on the floor in recent seasons, and Ware fills that role perfectly. Among Miami’s pieces for the future, Ware is one of the brightest.

Fantasy Disappointment: Terry Rozier

With a Yahoo! ADP of 106.7, Rozier certainly didn’t live up to those expectations. He finished outside the top-250 in nine-cat leagues with averages of 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 triples per game. Rozier was entirely out of the rotation for most of March and April and didn’t see the floor at all during the postseason.

Rozier still has one more season on his contract before he enters free agency, and with the way things ended this season, the odds of him playing enough to earn a nice payday are low. Rozier had been a top-100 player in five straight seasons before this year, which was why his dramatic fall from grace came out of nowhere. Rozier is also under investigation for “potentially manipulating his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme in a 2023 game for the Hornets.” It’s a situation that is worth monitoring, with Jontay Porter receiving a lifetime ban from the NBA because of his involvement in a similar issue.

Fantasy Recaps/Look-Aheads

Bam Adebayo

Things started off slow for Adebayo, but he ended up figuring things out and had a strong season. He averaged 18.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 triple in 34.3 minutes per game. Adebayo’s points and rebounds took a hit, but his assists were the highest they’ve been since the 2020-21 season. Bam is an excellent playmaker for a center, and with Jimmy Butler gone, he’ll continue to see his playmaking opportunities increase next season.

Adebayo is an incredible piece for the Heat to have, and he is one of the best defenders in the league. He represents everything they want to be, but he isn’t enough to make this team a contender on his own. The combo of Bam and Herro is a strong one, but they need more to truly contend. However, that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to bring that player in this summer. Barring major changes, Adebayo and Herro will be the 1A and 1B on this team, with Bam taking on more leadership on the defensive end while still being involved on the offense. He became a legitimate three-point threat this season, and while that did result in the worst field goal percentage of his career, he was a more dynamic player on offense. He may never become a high-volume sharpshooter, but his ability to space the floor opens things up for the rest of the team.

Andrew Wiggins

As part of the Butler trade package, Wiggins was sent to Miami after spending the last few seasons in Golden State. In 17 appearances for the Heat, Wiggins averaged 19.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.0 block and 2.1 threes per game. He has two more seasons left on his contract, with the second year as a player option.

Assuming he isn’t on the move again, Wiggins should be a productive option next season. He really struggled during the 2023-24 season after a phenomenal campaign before that, and he was back to being an average contributor this past season. However, his production did increase with the Heat, and he was prioritized more than he was with the Warriors this season. He hasn’t been a great option in nine-cat leagues for most of his career, but his current situation in Miami is a favorable one for him. However, that doesn’t mean he's a lock to stick on this roster, especially if a better player becomes available.

Nikola Jovic

Limited to 46 games because of a hand injury, Jovic still had a decent year for Miami. He averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 threes in 24.6 minutes per game. Those marks allowed him to finish inside the top 200 in nine-cat scoring for the first time in his young career. Jovic will turn 22 in June and still has plenty of untapped potential. He has been able to showcase his upside in spurts, but the hand injury in February derailed a golden opportunity for him to step up after the Jimmy Butler trade.

Entering next season, Jovic is one of the few young players with upside on Miami’s roster. He is worth stashing in dynasty formats and could take a leap as soon as next season. The Heat have a lot of questions to answer about their future, but Jovic does provide a glimmer of hope for the future, whether he is allowed to develop or used as a trade piece to help bring in a new star to get this team back to being a contender in the East.

Davion Mitchell

After starting off the season in Toronto, Mitchell was traded to the Heat at the trade deadline for PJ Tucker and a future second-round pick. He made 30 appearances for Miami and averaged 10.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 threes per game. Mitchell was in and out of the starting lineup for the Raptors, but he immediately entered the starting lineup for Miami.

He didn’t maintain that role for the rest of the season, but he had a lot of success as a reserve, which carried over into the postseason. He had at least five assists in all six of his postseason games and at least 15 points in the first five. A restricted free agent, Mitchell could be a decent late-round swing next season if he is back with the Heat.

Duncan Robinson

The veteran three-point marksman continues to play a large role for Miami. He played 24.1 minutes per game this season, averaging 11.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.6 threes per game. Robinson finished just outside the top-150 in nine-cat leagues last season, but he was closer to the top-250 mark this year. All of his numbers took a hit, including his minutes per game. Robinson will likely pick up his $19.9 million player option for next season, but after that, his sizable contract will be off the books for Miami. Whether he stays or not, Robinson’s game doesn’t translate well in fantasy basketball, unless you’re desperate for three-pointers.

Jaime Jaquez Jr.

After a strong rookie season, Jaquez Jr. saw his role decrease in year two. He averaged 8.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 20.7 minutes per game. When he was given the opportunity, Jaquez Jr. did have some strong stat lines, including a 16/12/10/5 line in January and a 41/10/7 line in the regular season finale. However, he wasn’t part of the team’s rotation during the postseason. The 2023 first-round pick should continue to be a nice depth piece for them, and at 24 years old, there is still room for him to improve. Still, it was disappointing to see his role get smaller after he made the All-Rookie First Team the season before. There should be much optimism surrounding him entering next season.

Haywood Highsmith

Highsmith continues to play a significant role for Miami as a glue guy, though it hasn’t translated to much success in the box score. He averaged 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 triples per game this season. Highsmith is under contract for one more season at $5.6 million before he’ll enter unrestricted free agency. He should earn a decent payday, but it’s unlikely that he’ll ever become much of a factor in fantasy basketball.

Kyle Anderson

Anderson was sent to Miami as part of the Butler trade after signing with the Warriors last summer. He averaged 6.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 25 appearances for the Heat. Anderson is still under contract for two more seasons, but he may not factor into their future plans. Whether he remains in Miami or plays elsewhere, Anderson isn’t going to be much of a factor in fantasy basketball.

Restricted Free Agents: Davion Mitchell, Josh Christopher, Dru Smith, Isaiah Stevens

Unrestricted Free Agents: Alec Burks

Player Option: Duncan Robinson

Team Option: Keshad Johnson
