NBA owners discussed expansion in Las Vegas, Seattle, amid report of $10 billion bids

When NBA owners met in New York this week, they discussed expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle, but no final decision has been made. Yet.

While the latest round of bids for Las Vegas are "coming in shortly," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said — those are due Thursday, according to reports — those will not be the final bids for the "several active groups" in the mix to bring a team to Sin City.

Those bids could be in the $10 billion range, ESPN’s Shams Charania said on NBA Today.

"The NBA and Silver are in deeper and deeper stages of the expansion conversation, and I'm told specifically for Las Vegas the next round of bids for an expansion team in Las Vegas are due on Thursday, and then final bids expected to be some point shortly thereafter. My understanding is proposals for that Vegas team is reaching and potentially exceeding $10 billion, and so far, the Vegas process has moved with more pace than Seattle, but those Seattle conversations are continuing as well."

Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont — the CEO and chairman of Las Vegas Sands — led part of the discussion around the Las Vegas team, specifically focusing on arena location, Silver said.

"I'll say that there was a discussion led by Patrick Dumont, of course, who is a Las Vegas resident, enormous operating experience there in Las Vegas, just sort of as an independent objective party," Silver said. "[Dumont] led a discussion around the various sites, potential sites, in Las Vegas."

While there is the T-Mobile Arena just off the Strip — the home to the WNBA's Aces, the NHL's Golden Knights, and it has been home to the final rounds of the NBA Cup the past couple of years — Silver said "it needs some significant improvements" before an NBA team could move in. Some ownership groups are proposing building new stadiums, Silver added.

While the Las Vegas process is moving faster and generated more discussion — and that team is expected to go for $2-3 billion more than the Seattle franchise — it is possible the Seattle team actually takes the court sooner because of the arena situation.

"In Seattle, we have had [NBA] operational groups out to Climate Pledge [Arena], Silver said. "You clearly have a state-of-the-art arena there. May require some modifications for NBA basketball. If we were opening in five weeks, we could be ready in Seattle."

The owners took no votes on expansion at this meeting, but Silver reiterated that "it's our goal to have decisions by the end of the year."

Astros vs. Royals Game Discussion: 9/15/2026

TONIGHT’S GAME: The first-place Astros will open their final homestand of the regular season tonight as they welcome in the Royals for an important three-game series in Houston, TX.

Astros ace RHP Hunter Brown (5-3) will try to pitch the Astros back into the win column tonight as he starts opposite RHP Michael Wacha (9-8) and the Royals.

BROTHER BROWN: RHP Hunter Brown has posted a 3.12 ERA (18ER/52IP) in his last eight starts (since July 25), pitching through the 5th inning in all eight outings.

Brown, who finished third in the AL Cy Young Award voting last season, has been limited this season, missing over two months due to a lengthy stint on the Injured List (April 1-June 15) with a right shoulder strain.

ASTROS-ROYALS: The Astros and Royals have a memorable history, with the two clubs meeting each other in the 2015 ALDS, won by the Royals in five games.

11 years later, 2B Jose Altuve and C Salvador Perez remain on their respective team’s active rosters, while SS Carlos Correa, currently on the IL, also played in the series.

More recently, the Astros are 9-4 in their last 13 games against the Royals, including a 2-1 record this season.

CLEMENTE DAY: Today is Roberto Clemente Day presented by Capital One.

As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo will appear on the bases, on the official dugout lineup cards and on a special uniform patch.

In honor of Clemente, seven different Astros players and Manager Joe Espada will wear Clemente’s #21 for tonight’s game.

HADER NAMED CLEMENTE NOMINEE: For the second straight season, LHP Josh Hader has been named the Astros nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, baseball’s most prestigious individual honor for MLB players.

The Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Capital One, is the annual recognition of an MLB player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

FIRST RESPONDERS NIGHT: Tonight is First Responders Night at the ballpark as the Astros will proudly honor the courageous men and women who serve the city of Houston.

There will be a pregame ceremony and ceremonial first pitch for First Responders Night presented by Budweiser.

THE SUNDAY SCARIES: The Astros finished their six-game road trip on Sunday in Tampa with a 14-4 loss to the Rays.

CHALLENGING STRETCH: On Sunday, the Astros completed a stretch of playing 13 consecutive games against opponents with winning records (CWS, ARI, PHI, TB), going 6-7 in those contests.

On the season, the Astros are 29-23 against teams with .500 or better records.

TODAY’S ROSTER MOVE: The Astros have placed OF Taylor Trammell on the Paternity List and have recalled OF Joey Loperfido from Triple A Sugar Land.

He enters today leading the AL in batting avg. (.310), while ranking second in RBI (96) and tied for second in HR (38)…Alvarez also leads the Majors in OPS (1.016), SLG (.589) and OBP (.427).

Since Carl Yastrzemski won the AL Triple Crown in 1967, there has been just one Triple Crown winner in the Majors, Miguel Cabrera in 2012 (AL).

ISAAC’S FABLES: 3B Isaac Paredes has posted a 20-game on-base streak, which is the second-longest on-base streak of his career (22g in 2025) and the second-longest active on-base streak in the Majors (Elly De La Cruz, 21g).

During the streak, which dates back to Aug. 23, Paredes has 14 walks, a .395 OBP and a .917 OPS.

NOTHING FINER THAN YAINER: C Yainer Diaz is hitting .378 (14×37) in the month of September with a .924 OPS.

Prior to going 0x3 on Sunday, Diaz had tallied multiple hits in six straight starts, going 13×23 (.565) in that span.

STALKING 200: 1B Christian Walker is currently sitting on 199 career home runs and needs just one homer to become the 35th active Major League player to reach 200 career long balls.

Walker has hit 25 homers this year for his fifth consecutive 25-plus homer season (2022-26).

Anthony Gill re-signs with the Wizards

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 07: Anthony Gill #16 of the Washington Wizards in action against the Chicago Bulls during the second half at Capital One Arena on April 7, 2026 in Washington, DC. On Tuesday, the Washington Wizards announced that they have re-signed forward Anthony Gill. Per various reports, the contract is for one season, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Gill is the longest tenured Wizards player among players on the active roster, entering his seventh season in Washington. He averaged a career-high 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in 55 appearances in the 2025-26 season. Gill’s time extends back to the 2020-21 season, the last time Washington made the NBA Playoffs.

The 2020s has certainly been a time where the Wizards started the decade with a playoff appearance but were never able to come back close anytime since. Much of it is their own doing due to their rebuild, but my point is that rosters often turnover completely over six years when there is a significant front office shift. And despite it all, Gill has remained as a consummate professional, getting minutes where he can while setting a good example for younger players.

Blackhawks Defeat Blues 5-2 In Prospect Showcase Game 2

The Chicago Blackhawks were defeated by the St. Louis Blues 3-1 in their first of two matchups in the 2026 Prospect Showcase. The consensus from the team after the game was that the Hawks played with a good effort, but some sloppiness and penalty trouble sank them.

Game 2 took place one day later at USG Arena. The Blackhawks started Adam Gajan in net for the second game in a row as they looked to split the event with the Blues. Once again, Taige Harding wore the C as the captain. Jake Furlong kept his A from the night before, but Martin Misiak had the other in place of the missing Paul Ludwinski.

In the first period, the Blackhawks got off to a much better start. They outshot the Blues 10-3, and one of them went in courtesy of AJ Spellacy.

The Blackhawks carried that 1-0 lead into the second period, but it didn't last long. With 17:22 remaining in the second period, a shot floated through traffic and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1. Just over a minute later, however, Parker Holmes restored the lead for Chicago with a snipe off a turnover.

There have been many fights during this event. In this game, Taige Harding was part of one. This is notable because he left the penalty box with an apparent hand injury at the next whistle. On the next shift, Martin Misiak scored his second goal in as many days to make it 3-1 Blackhawks.

With just over two minutes remaining in the middle frame, AJ Spellacy scored his second of the game to finish off a nice tic-tac-toe goal. The Blackhawks held a 4-1 lead going into the second intermission.

In the third period, Taige Harding was back on the ice and looked no worse for wear. For him, that's important as he wants to make an impact early and often with the Rockford IceHogs.

The third period had a little bit of everything. Each team took a penalty; there were more fights, and both sides had their fair share of chances.

The first goal of the final frame came off the stick of Jakub Stancl, who scored his second of the Prospect Challenge. This one came as a shorthanded goal to get the Blues back within 2. The Blackhawks responded with an empty-net goal, courtesy of Martin Misiak.

That 5-2 score stood as the final. The Blackhawks defeated the Blues to end the Prospect Showcase 1-1. That is all for this particular group of prospects, but they are now all headed to different training camps to prepare for the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Astros Manager Joe Espada Says Carlos Correa Will Not Return In 2026

HOUSTON, TX - AUGUST 05: Carlos Correa #1 of the Houston Astros warms up prior to the game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Kairi Mano/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty Images

Apparently all the work and all the hope was for naught.

It’s yet another kick in the teeth for the Astros, who have been beset by injuries for the third straight season.

There was hope that a return for Correa would inject some life into an offense that has been scuffling with Jeremy Pena slumping and Yordan Alvarez experiencing a power outage. The bottom two-thirds of the lineup has been shaky at best over the last month and a half.

It is a complete 180 degree turn from the optimism that has been exuded from both Correa and the reports that had Correa ramping up and starting rehab games this week with Triple-A Sugar Land.

Correa had been scheduled to meet with doctors before going on the rehab assignment, and as of right now we can only presume that the reports were not good enough to allow him to start playing.

Yet another tough break for Houston and Correa.

New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins: Max Fried vs. Bailey Ober

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 04: Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees pitches during the first inning of a game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on September 04, 2026 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The Yankees are heading to the playoffs. In a season of uncertainty (particularly around injuries), that much is certain after last night’s series-opening comeback victory officially punched their ticket for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Everything beyond that, though, is still unknown.

While their playoff spot (and likely the top wild card based on the standings) is secure, the team has made it clear that their aspirations are still to win the AL East, which they trail by 3.5 games with 12 to go. Until they get their hands on the Tampa Bay Rays next week in the Bronx, their playoff journey won’t be set in stone, but games like these are important to ensure that what they do that week can directly control their fate.

Looking to lock up another series win in Minnesota will be Max Fried, who’s probably hoping to go deeper than his last start against Colorado. He labored through 3.1 innings of work and was removed due to pitch count, but should be pretty close to full-go tonight as he continues to build up. Entering play, he has a 2.73 ERA (155 ERA+) and 2.73 FIP across 99 innings in 18 starts. He did not face the Twins in early July at Yankee Stadium, having been on the injured list with the bone bruise in his elbow.

Making the start for Minnesota will be Bailey Ober, who will be toeing the slab for the 23rd time this season. The 31-year-old has been one of their most consistent starters for half a decade now, despite becoming a completely different pitcher as he’s aged. He went from someone who had a very good strikeout rate to one of the lowest among starting pitchers, currently sitting with just 85 strikeouts in 117.2 innings with a 4.28 ERA (98 ERA+). Impressively, he’s only managed to make one career start against the Yankees, allowing three runs in five innings in 2024.

Finesse has always been the way he’s gotten batters out, but it’s particularly true as his fastball velocity and, subsequently, usage have cratered over the years, now sitting at just 88.1 mph on average. He has good command and limits hard contact, but has a big issue with allowing barrels due to middling stuff. Against lefties, it’s changeups and four-seamers with a few sliders mixed in, while he throws them much more evenly against righties alongside a sweeper and sinker.

Braves at Cubs chat and discussion: Martín Pérez vs. Kevin Gausman

The Atlanta Braves enter Tuesday night with a magic number of four to clinch a postseason spot and a magic number of seven to clinch the NL East.

They’ll look to cut into those respective numbers when they continue their series against the Chicago Cubs with a 7:40 p.m. EDT game at Wrigley Field which will be broadcast both nationally on TBS, locally on Atlanta News First and on BravesVision.

The Diamondbacks losing against the Marlins or the Phillies losing to the Nationals would also help those respective magic numbers drop regardless of the outcome of the Braves game.

Martín Pérez (8-9, 3.08 ERA) gets the start for Atlanta against one-time Brave Kevin Gausman (9-12, 4.60), who was acquired by the Cubs ahead of the trade deadline.

Follow along and share your thoughts below as the Braves look to even the series and set up a Wednesday evening rubber match.

Florida Panthers Get Back To Work With Busy Week Featuring Media Day, Training Camp, Preseason Games

Buckle up, hockey fans.

Things are about to kick into high gear around the Florida Panthers, and the fun all starts on Wednesday.

That’s when the Panthers will hold their annual media day at the Baptist Health IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale, with players doing interviews and filming different scenes and promos throughout the building.

Florida General Manager Bill Zito is expected to address the media, along with several Panthers players.

They will also take part in introductory meetings and medical testing, all in anticipation of hitting the ice for their first official training camp practice.

This year, the Panthers are brining a roster of 51 players to Training Camp, and the full roster can be found by clicking here.

The roster consists of 30 forwards, 16 defensemen and five goaltenders.

Of those players, the only surprise, and only player not under contract, is veteran forward Nathan Bastian, who will be on a Professional Tryout Agreement (PTO).

That will come the following morning, on Thursday, as Florida will look to hit the ground running for their less-than-two-week camp.

Training Camp practices on Friday and Saturday will be open to the public and free to attend, with sessions taking place at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on both days.

Saturday will also be when the Panthers host their annual Training Camp Fan Fest at the IcePlex, which will begin at 10 a.m.

More information about Fan Fest can be found by clicking here.

The Cats will only have a few days of work both on the off the ice before they start a quick-hitting preseason in which they play four games in seven days in three different cities.

Florida will start the preseason fun on Sunday night at Amerant Bank Arena when they host the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m.

Nine days later, and three days after their final preseason game, Florida will again face the Hurricanes, but this time it’ll be in Raleigh for the first official game of the NHL season, a night where Carolina will raise their second Stanley Cup banner to the rafters at Lenovo Center.

So yeah, while it may have been pretty quiet around these parts for an extended offseason, get ready for Panthers hockey to start coming fast and furious.

Red Sox take on Jacob deGrom and the Texas Rangers to kick off final road trip of the season

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - SEPTEMBER 04: Adley Rutschman #31 of the Boston Red Sox walks to the dugout before the game against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on September 04, 2026 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by G Fiume/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The Red Sox enter tonight with a record of 82-68. Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers enter tonight with a record of 74-76. However, thanks to a combination of MLB’s far too bloated playoff system and a wretched AL West, this game has much, MUCH higher playoff implications for the Rangers than it does for the Red Sox.

Texas finds itself just a game off their division lead (and 1.5 out of the third Wild Card spot) while the Red Sox are virtually locked into the second Wild Card spot (unless something historical happens). There’s something about this entire dynamic that just doesn’t sit well with me as the daylight grows shorter and we approach the playoffs, but alas, it’s what we’ve got.

As far as a tune up is concerned though, this game still means something to the Red Sox in terms of getter guys hot and the lineup clicking all at once. So on that note, here’s the lineup that will be facing Jacob deGrom this evening, and outside of missing Ceddanne Rafaela (who is still on the IL), it’s starting to look closer and closer to what the Sox might roll out there for Game 1 of the Wild Card series two weeks from tonight.

Jets Announce 51-Player Training Camp Roster, Connor Hellebuyck Expected to Be Absent

On Tuesday, the Winnipeg Jets announced their training camp roster and schedule. The Jets have invited 51 players to camp, which will run from Thursday, September 17th to the 25th and take place at Hockey For All Centre.

Among the notable names looking to make the main roster is recent eighth overall pick Viggo Björck, who is coming off a strong season with Djurgårdens IF in the SHL, where he posted 15 points in 42 games before adding three more in the playoffs.

Connor Hellebuyck is also listed on the roster, though some are questioning whether he'll actually attend given the offseason drama surrounding his trade request from the team. TSN's Darren Dreger reported on Tuesday's episode of Insider Trading that he doesn't believe Hellebuyck will report to training camp and that his absence will cause the Jets to respond Dreger said on either Wednesday or Thursday.

Goaltenders

The goaltending group includes six names, headlined by Hellebuyck, who posted a 23-23-11 record with an .895 save percentage and a 2.86 goals against average across 57 games last season.

Thomas Milic, who split time between Winnipeg and Manitoba, is also on the list after finishing 20-13-6 with a .905 save percentage in 41 AHL games, along with a rough three game stint at the NHL level.

Stuart Skinner, who is expected to be the Jets starter this season after splitting last season between Pittsburgh and Edmonton. The netminders rounding out the group include Isaac Poulter and Alex Worthington, both out of the ECHL and AHL ranks, round out the group, along with Domenic DiVincentiis, who impressed in the AHL postseason with a .955 save percentage over five playoff games.

Defense

On the back end, 18 defensemen are in camp, led by veterans Josh Morrissey, who posted 55 points last season, and Dylan DeMelo, along with Neal Pionk and Dylan Samberg.

Also in the mix are a handful of prospects looking to push for a roster spot, including Elias Salomonsson, who split time between Winnipeg and Manitoba, Henry Thrun, who joins the organization after helping the Toronto Marlies to a Calder Cup title, and Alfons Freij, who spent most of last season overseas before finishing the year with the Moose.

Forwards

The forward group is the largest, with 27 names on the list. Mark Scheifele, coming off a 103 point season, headlines the group along with leading goal scorer Kyle Connor, who potted 39 goals and 92 points, and Gabriel Vilardi, who posted 69 points of his own.

Also in camp is Björck, along with fellow prospects Brayden Yager, Colby Barlow and Kevin He, all looking to carve out roles at the NHL level after strong showings in the AHL and junior ranks last season.

With training camp opening later this week, all eyes will be on whether Hellebuyck reports as scheduled, or whether the goaltender's trade situation forces the Jets to make a decision before puck drop on the regular season.
