The Mariners will try to wipe the slate clean today behind Emerson Hancock. He could use a great outing as much as the Mariners could use one from him. Since his first start in May, Hancock has looked less like a breakout star and more like a somewhat improved version of his old self. Over that time, his K%-BB% is down to just 12%, and he’s outrunning his peripherals on the back of a .200 BABIP. That’s all fine, and even that version of Hancock has more of a career in front of him than the guy who finished last season. But one hopes he can adjust back now that the league has clearly adjusted to him.
The Nats will counter with PJ Poulin, who will work as an opener in front of Miles Mikolas.
With Randy Arozarena still down with the hamstring issue and Julio Rodríguez getting a DH day, we’ll see an outfield of Luke Raley, Víctor Robles, and Dominic Canzone. It’s giving 2024. I wouldn’t read too much into Raley, Canzone, and Miles Mastrobouni getting starts against a lefty since Mikolas is expected to get the bulk today for Washington. Honestly, I’m surprised more teams aren’t trying a lefty opener against the Mariners.
Pretty standard lineup for the Nats except that Curtis Mead has the day off, and James Wood gets DH duty. On the seventh day, they rested.

Spencer Strider is back in Atlanta after having gone on the 10-Day IL due to what the Atlanta Braves were calling “right arm soreness.” It wasn’t just the elbow acting up on Strider before he exited this past Friday’s game against the New York Mets, as his shoulder was also reportedly in pain as well.
As such, Strider received an MRI while he was here but reportedly the results were apparently inconclusive. As a result, Walt Weiss informed the media before Sunday’s series finale with the New York Mets that Strider will be heading to go see Dr. Keith Meister for further evaluation.
If that name sounds familiar, that’s because Dr. Meister was the surgeon who performed the internal brace procedure on Strider back in 2024. Of course, it’s not a name you’d like to hear associated with Strider again since this does bring up the possibility of another surgery. If Strider does end up going under the knife again then we may have to prepare to deal with the fact that we’ve just seen Strider throw his last pitch of 2026. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that but it’s certainly a possibility if we’re getting to this point.
There’s still “nothing definitive” as Walt Weiss mentioned in the report above and I’ll try not to speculate any more than what I already have. Still, it’s going to be a bit of a nervy week for everybody involved as Strider and the Braves try to get some answers as to what’s going on with him. We’ll see what happens.
The Phillies got shut down by the Brewers’ ace on Friday night. On Sunday, Cristopher Sanchez will attempt to return the favor as the Phillies aim to win their second straight game against the Brewers.
The Brewers will counter with Kyle Harrison. The Phillies have had troubles with lefthanded starters this season, and Harrison has pitched well, going 7-1 with a 2.72 ERA.
Game time is 2:10 Eastern and will be televised locally by NBCSP.
The Cincinnati Reds got off to a miracle start to the 2026 season only for their luck to effectively run out in May. Lefty Andrew Abbott, however, got off to a mostly miserable start to the 2026 season only for his fortunes to return as the end of April graced the calendar.
It’s quite the juxtaposition. On April 30th, Abbott entered with an ugly 6.59 ERA through his first 6 starts of the season, and that even included a brilliant 6.0 scoreless frames against Boston on Opening Day. He fired 6.0 IP of 2 ER ball that day as the Reds won to move to 20-11 overall on the season, a high mark they’ve not come close to replicating so far this season. They began an 8-game losing streak the very next day, and are just 13-25 overall since that day.
That April 30th start got Abbott’s season very much back on track. Counting that day, he’s pitching in 8 games since April 30th and owns a 2.54 ERA in those starts (46.0 IP). The Reds, in those starts, are 5-3, meaning they’re just 8-22 in games started by anyone other than Abbott since April 30th. Woof!
Abbott will take the mound again on Sunday in Great American Ball Park as the Reds look to close out a series victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, who they defeated 2-1 on a late Noelvi Marte homer on Saturday evening. Veteran righty Zac Gallen will start for the Snakes, and he’s slipped to a 7.02 ERA over his last 8 starts dating back to May 1st as he continues to get rolled out in my fantasy lineup, for whatever stupid reason I continue to justify.
Cincinnati activated catcher Jose Trevino prior to this one, with catcher PJ Higgins optioned back to AAA Louisville to make way on the roster. Trevino will start today in his return.
First pitch is set for 1:40 PM ET.
Here’s how the Reds will line up to start:
Coming off one of the worst losses in franchise history, the Spurs faced elimination for the third time this postseason in Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. At the Frost Bank Center, the crowd was split almost 50/50 between Spurs fans and Knicks fans. Nonetheless, like all five games of this series, the Spurs got off to a hot start in the first quarter. Leading by 10 after the first, New York cut the deficit to five at halftime. The Spurs’ defense was at its best, and the only engine that was working for the Knicks was none other than their captain, Jalen Brunson. The Spurs outscored the Knicks in the third and took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter. In other words, heartbreak for the Spurs was unfortunately on the horizon yet again. The Spurs’ offense stagnated, and shots stopped falling, while Brunson fueled the Knicks. The result: New York outscored the Spurs 29-18 in the quarter and captured their first title in 53 years. The Spurs suffered their first Finals series loss since 2013.
Dylan Harper led the way with 25 points (10-19 FG, 2-4 3PT), five rebounds, four assists, and a block. In the rookie’s first postseason, he averaged 14 points per game, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on 51% shooting. Dylan elevated and averaged 18 points per game in the Finals, which is the most for a rookie guard since Magic Johnson in 1980. Safe to say, that’s some good company. Dylan left everything on the floor and was easily the Spurs’ second-best player in this series. The 20-year-old showed he belongs on this stage and deserves consideration for a starting spot next season.
Dylan fought through contact multiple times, including flicking a floater over Karl-Anthony Towns for a tough two.
This was ridiculous. Dylan somehow got this reverse layup to go while under the basket!
Dylan dished out four dimes, including this laser to a wide-open Keldon Johnson in the corner for three.

The true meaning of leaving it all on the court: Dylan gets his own rebounds and puts it back up and in for two.
Victor Wembanyama dropped a double-double: 19 points and 14 rebounds to go along with five blocks and two assists. Wemby had his best game on the glass and his best game with blocks. However, he struggled from the field, and it showed late. A key storyline of this series has been Wemby’s endurance, but the way his minutes were managed throughout this series (especially Game 4) was arguably questionable. Nonetheless, Wemby said after the game that he was not ready to win a championship and that he made too many mistakes. He averaged 26 points per game, 11.2 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks in the Finals and 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game in his first playoff run. He joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players to average those numbers and reach the Finals. The 22-year-old’s self-awareness will have to make him explore his game even more this offseason.
Defense to offense. Like Spurs fans have seen all season, Vic rejects KAT on one end, and he finishes on the other end with a reverse jam!
Wemby blocked three Knicks’ shots in the first quarter alone, with two on KAT and one on Anunoby.
Vic stayed active on the glass and finished this putback slam with one hand!
Vic’s lone three came early in the second quarter. In terms of efficiency, his three-pointer is something he needs to continue working on this offseason.
Spurs’ ball movement results in a Wemby and-one slam! Mitchell Robinson would receive a flagrant 1 on this play for shoving a defenseless player.

Julian Champagnie dropped 14 points (4-8 3PT), seven rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Julian knocked down four threes, but also had some costly turnovers. Nonetheless, he averaged 11 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists on 40% three-point-shooting in the Finals, and near similar numbers throughout his first playoff run. Julian from the beginning of the season till the end was the team’s best three-point shooter, and set multiple franchise records, including threes in a game (11), threes in a season, and threes in one postseason. He has a team option coming up this offseason, but it is more likely that the Spurs decline it and give him a long-term deal.
Devin Vassell dropped 12 points (5-8 FG), seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block. Dev gave it his all on both ends of the court and was a playoff riser all postseason long. He averaged 12.8 points per game, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists on 53.7% shooting and 46.7% three-point shooting in the Finals. In his first postseason, he averaged similar numbers on less efficient shooting. Dev has earned the respect of all Spurs fans, and he will continue being a glue guy for this team next season.

Some tough pills to swallow from this series: The average margin of victory was 4.0 points per game, it is the second smallest combined margin of victory for a winning team in the Finals (20), and most importantly, the Spurs led for 72% of the series and still lost in 5. Although it was a gut-wrenching way to end the season, Spurs fans need to take a step back and appreciate this team.
At the beginning of the season, this team was projected to barely crack 40 wins and make the play-in tournament (ESPN). This team completely overachieved and had several highlights from October to June. A 62-win season (most since 2016-17), two all-stars (De’Aaron Fox and Wemby), a 6th Man of the Year (KJ), the first-ever Unanimous Defensive Player of the Year (Wemby), an All-Rookie First Teamer (Dylan), an All-NBA First Teamer (Wemby), and a run to the NBA Finals in its first postseason run since 2018-19. Not to mention, they defeated the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in the Western Conference Finals. If that does not convince you of how well-suited this team is for the future, here is a quick reminder for all NBA fans: Dylan Harper is 20, Carter Bryant is 20, Stephon Castle is 21, Victor Wembanyama is 22. This loss will only fuel this team for the next season and for the seasons to come.

Former New York Islanders defenseman Sebastian Aho has signed a two-year contract with the Växjö Lakers of the Swedish Hockey League.

Aho, 30, was drafted with the 139th pick in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Islanders and played 190 career NHL games with the team from 2017 to 2024, amassing 11 goals and 39 assists for 50 points.
Following the 2023-24 season, he signed a two-year, $1.55 million AAV one-way deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he never suited up in a regular-season game for them.
In 56 regular-season games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins across the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, Aho recorded two goals and 26 assists for 28 points, as well as one assist in 10 playoff games.
Aho's contract with the Lakers will keep him in Sweden through the 2027-28 season.
After a strong end to the 2025-26 season, winds are already in the sails of the Philadelphia Flyers with momentum building throughout the offseason.
A big reason for that momentum, and perhaps even the playoff run, is rookie forward Porter Martone, who joined the Flyers at the NHL level at the very end of the season after a year in the NCAA with Michigan State University.
Martone, 19, is still technically a rookie, which makes him eligible to win the 2027 Calder Trophy.
With five points in 10 playoff games and 10 points in nine regular season games, the Flyers winger's early production has also made him an early favorite to win that Calder Trophy.
On Saturday, The Hockey News published its shortlist of the five leading candidates to be named the NHL's Rookie of the Year next season, and Martone was the very first name on the list.
"The 19-year-old became the youngest player in Flyers history to score in their postseason debut and recorded points in the team’s first three games against the Pittsburgh Penguins," Eric Cruikshank wrote. "This strong first impression solidified Martone as a top-six forward for the Flyers and earned him a spot on Canada’s World Championship roster, where he put up 5 points in 10 games.

Martone was an instant hit for the Flyers and head coach Rick Tocchet, who opted to use the teenager in the top-six ahead of someone like sophomore starlet Matvei Michkov.
Now that the 2025 No. 6 overall pick knows what the NHL pace is like--and the pace of the Stanley Cup playoffs--the adjustment should be even smoother next season.
Without a doubt, Martone is the top candidate for the 2027 Calder Trophy heading into next season.

Cheers of excitement were heard across the five boroughs last night as our beloved home team earned the NBA championship title in a nail-biting 94-90 win against the San Antonio Spurs.
Even Timothée Chalamet, one of the most notable Knicks celebrity superfans who has been nominated for four Oscars but has yet to win one, couldn’t contain his excitement for last night’s historic win as he loudly shouted to cameras, “Way rather this than the Oscars, c’mon, baby! Knicks are champions, baby!”
The actor celebrated by jumping up and down with the winning team, holding up a mockup of The Post alongside Mikal Bridges on the court at Frost Bank Center.

Dozens of fans draped in Knicks gear and holding up banners and signs lined up outside the suburban airfield for a parade of players’ cars and SUVs to welcome the hoop heroes home – with guard Jordan Clarkson seen high-fiving fans from one vehicle’s window.
Knicks star Karl-Anthony Townes and legend Patrick Ewing waved to fans from other SUVs, as the crowd chanted, “Let’s go Knicks!”
It’s just the beginning, with celebrations throughout the New York Metropolitan Area and a heroes’ parade planned for Manhattan on Thursday.
The hometown hoopsters stunned the San Antonio Spurs with a 94-90 victory on their home court, taking the NBA Finals 4-1.
It's that time of year again; we are just two weeks away from the 2026 NHL Draft. With the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals getting near the end, the attention will soon turn to the draft, free agency, and then the start of the 2026-27 season.
However, for a team like the Nashville Predators, their focus has been on the draft and the offseason for quite some time. So, let's look at a potential draft target for them. Today, we are going to look at Viggo Björck, the Swedish forward out of Djurgården (SWE J20).
For most, the first thing that stands out is his speed and size. At 5-foot-9 and 177 pounds, he is one of the smallest players in the draft, but he's also one of, if not the fastest players. He drives a lot of plays using his speed and typically averages around 20 minutes per night at just 17 years old.
Scouts point out that he has slick passing, great awareness and vision, and isn't afraid to shoot the puck. So, adding him into a young Predators offence alongside the likes of Matthew Wood, Joakim Kemell, and Brady Martin would make them a team to watch in the next few seasons.
Here are some of the scouting reports put out by the most notable scouts/hockey writers in the NHL.
"While his numbers will be nothing to lose your mind over, the fact that Björck played on the first line – often skating in more than 20 minutes a night – as a 17-year-old in one of the top leagues in the world is bonkers. Björck was electric at the World Juniors, showing a high-end blend of hockey sense and raw skill."- Steven Ellis ~ Daily Faceoff
"Some people will shy away from his size, but Bjorck never shies away from battling in the hard areas of the ice. He plays quick and fast and his three-zone detail has resulted in his coaches at the pro level in Sweden trusting him in all situations."- Jason Bukala `~ Sportsnet
"Bjorck can play with the puck on a string and make plays as a natural facilitator who has a ton of poise and vision, but he also plays in and out of give-and-gos, will go to the net and finish off plays and has great overall sense on and off the puck. Many 2026 NHL Draft mock drafts have Björck going somewhere in the 6-8 range, with some having him jump into the top five. That said, very few have him falling to number 10, where the Predators pick. Regardless, if he were to fall down to 10, or the Predators could move up in the draft, Björck is a name they should strongly consider calling.
It was a tough scene for Spurs fans after their Game 5 loss to the Knicks Saturday night.
Tempers flared with one fan sporting a Dennis Rodman Spurs jersey. Video went viral of him trying to fight every Knicks fan in his immediate vicinity inside Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, shoving and chasing down multiple people while throwing a few punches before a police officer came over to try to calm him down.
Cops then escorted the fan away while Knicks fans taunted him.
This wasn’t the only scene of chaos following the conclusion of the NBA Finals, which the Knicks won 4-1 to clinch their first championship since 1973. Some celebratory scenes in New York after the championship-clinching Game 5 grew out of control, such as one where a school bus was set on fire in Times Square.
Following some other games during the NBA Finals, fans of both teams were being attacked. During Game 4 on Wednesday, a 17-year-old boy was beaten into a coma during a livestreamed brawl in Midtown, started by a man chanting “Spurs in 7.”
The boy was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he came out of the coma and was listed in critical but stable condition.
Another Spurs fan was attacked in New York after Game 3. Twenty-one people were taken into custody and several NYPD officers were injured following the Game 3 watch party at Bryant Park.
Fans were even seen chasing down a bus they believed was carrying the Spurs team. Things got so chaotic that several people, including players, longtime Knicks fan Ben Stiller, and others called for an end to the chaos.
Former San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg called for Spurs fans to be kind to Knicks fans before Game 5, even after the violent events.
1905
George Davis stole four bases in a 5-3 win at Washington, a mark that has stood for 121 years now (though tied nine different times). Davis led an onslaught that saw the speedy Sox swipe seven sacks on the afternoon without once being caught. Woe was Senators catcher Malachi Kittridge.
It was truly a different, dead-ball era, in that nine different White Sox swiped at least 11 bases in 1905, and the team totaled 194. Davis, in spite of his four-swipe day, did not lead the team; his 31 finished one shy of first baseman Jiggs Donahue. Davis did, however, finish with 7.2 WAR to lead the American League and make him the presumptive MVP (it was not officially honored as such in the early days of baseball). In the extreme dead-ball era, Davis’ hitting prowess landed him at just a .693 OPS.
Davis was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously, in 1998.
1942
With an 11-4 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Washington, Eddie Smith won his first game of the year, in 12 tries, to improve to 1-10. What’s crazy about Smith’s winless streak, which stretched back to the start of the 1942 season, is that he didn’t pitch badly at all: seven complete games, five one-run losses, two two-run losses, and an 3.83 ERA/4.16 FIP.
In the 11 games leading up to this blowout win, the White Sox scored just 21 runs total (not runs in support of Smith, but TOTAL runs in all of the losses, plus one ninth-inning win when Smith had been removed from the game).
If you stretched back to the end of 1941, Smith’s losing run heading into this game was 15 straight, having lost his final five decisions in that season.
Despite a 3.98 ERA that wasn’t that much worse than league average (90 ERA+), Smith would end up leading the AL in losses, at 7-20. While it would be easy to blame a bad White Sox team for Smith’s misfortune in 1942, by 1920-50 White Sox standards the 66-82 White Sox weren’t all that bad; applying their winning percentage to Smith’s 27 decisions, the hurler should have gone 12-15 on the season.
1953
White Sox pitchers Billy Pierce and Sandy Consuegra both fired shutouts in beating the Boston Red Sox in a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. The Sox won, 6-0 and 1-0. Pierce was brilliant in the opener, with two hits and one walk against eight Ks for a 90 game score. And although the 1-0 score in the nightcap doesn’t indicate it, Consuegra was a lot luckier with his win, spinning a shutout on an eight-hitter; Chico Carrasquel knocked in the only run of the game, with a single to center in the second inning.
With the sweep, the White Sox moved from a tie for fourth place with the Washington Senators to third place, leapfrogging the Red Sox with these head-to-head wins. Chicago would spend much of the season in second place from there, but would fall no lower than third for the remainder of the 1953 season.
2000
The White Sox trounced Cleveland, 11-4, but still managed to fail. How? Well, a club-record 17 games hitting at least one home run was snapped in the win.
The streak started on May 26, when Frank Thomas hit a solo home run off of Cleveland’s Chuck Finley in the first inning of a 5-3 win. The White Sox hit 28 home runs during the streak, but interestingly from just seven hitters: Thomas (eight), José Valentín (five), Carlos Lee (five), Ray Durham (five), Magglio Ordoñez (three), Chris Singleton (one) and Greg Norton (one). Eighteen of the homers were solo shots, seven came with one runner on, two were three-run shots, and one was a grand slam.
The streak came close to snapping only three times, with two homers coming as late as the seventh inning to keep the streak going. The homer streak came closest to snapping on June 13, when Durham’s solo shot in the 10th inning kept it going.
The White Sox went 13-4 over the 17 games of the streak, raising their record from 26-20 to 39-24 and extending their AL Central lead to five games by streak’s end. Despite snapping the longball streak, this game came toward the start of a eight-game winning streak and wins in 14 of 16 to shoot to a commanding lead in the division — one that would not be relinquished.
One of the two losses in the stretch came against the Cubs, in a June 11 game when the White Sox exploded for five home runs — all solo shots — in a 6-5 final.
2009
With American League pitchers still having to bat in any interleague game played in NL parks, White Sox pitchers had long been a hole in the batting order of such games. Mark Buehrle, coming into a start in Milwaukee as a career 3-for-36 hitter with zero extra-base hits for a -49 OPS+ and a .083/.108/.083 slash, homered to lead off the third inning against Braden Looper.
Buehrle never homered again in the major leagues, and in fact would have just five hits (two doubles) in his career after this game. In his 14 years hitting in the majors, Buerhle was 9-of-125 for a .072/.087/.112 slash for a -1.0 WAR and -47 OPS+.
The White Sox prevailed in this tight game, 5-4, when A.J. Pierzynski singled in the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth off of Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman. Interestingly, pitcher Clayton Richard had pinch-run for Jim Thome in the inning and scored the eventual winning run.

The Chicago Cubs just won their first series dating back to the first week in May after taking the first two games in San Francisco. That was also the last time Chicago had a win streak as long as this current three-game streak.
The Cubs will look for a sweep in the Bay Area, but they have their work cut out for them. My Cubs vs. Giants predictions and MLB picks expect the Giants to salvage the series finale.
The San Francisco Giants have scored just one run in each of the last two games, but the offense could get an assist from this Chicago Cubs pitching rotation today.

He’s been dependable and effective for years, but since returning from the injured list at the end of May, he seems to have found another level.
