The No. 4 seed Cornhuskers defeated No. 5 Vanderbilt 74-72 when Tyler Tanner's potential game-winning half-court heave at the buzzer rattled in — then out — of the rim. It was Nebraska's second win ever in the Men's NCAA Tournament, both coming in the last three days, moving it to 2-8 all-time in NCAA Tournament games.
Of course, the honor of calling the game went to a 41-year veteran announcer for the Cornhuskers, Kent Pavelka. Following the game, Nebraska players made sure to find Pavelka and celebrate the historic moment with him.

Veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel has been informed that he will not make the Mets' Opening Day roster, manager Carlos Mendoza announced.
The right-hander is seeking out opportunities with other clubs, but he may stick around in Port St. Lucie, Fla., to continue throwing and remain in the organization.
"Now, he’s deciding whether he wants to stay, which it looks like he’s leaning that way," Mendoza said. "He likes it here, he wants to win, but he’s also going to look around for opportunities, but there’s a good chance he’s going to stay back here in Florida and continue to pitch until an opportunity presents."
"That goes to show you who he is, as a person, as a human, as a competitor. It’s a very good opportunity here, but we did inform him yesterday."
The 37-year-old Kimbrel, who ranks fourth on the all-time saves list with 440, was a non-roster invite by the Mets, but he was inconsistent on the mound this spring. In six appearances (6.0 innings), Kimbrel posted a 4.50 ERA with five strikeouts, five walks, and two hit batters.
With Kimbrel now out of the mix for an Opening Day bullpen spot, that likely leaves lefty Bryan Hudson and lefty Richard Lovelady as candidates for the final job in the 'pen.

The Colorado Avalanche got their four game road trip off to a good start on Friday evening, as they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks by a score of 4-1 at United Center. All of Colorado’s big guns factored into the victory, as Martin Nečas, Brock Nelson, Nazem Kadri, and Valeri Nichushkin all tallied goals in the contest. Nathan MacKinnon’s three assist night helped power Colorado’s big guns in the victory as he continues his chase for the Art Ross scoring title; coming into today’s contest, MacKinnon’s 114 points sees him two points behind Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (116) and four points behind Tampa’s Nikita Kucherov (118). The win snapped Colorado’s three game losing streak, and helped them maintain their position as the undisputed leader across the Central Division, Western Conference, and entire League standings.
With the win over Chicago, the Avalanche clinched their ninth consecutive postseason berth, and became the first team in the NHL this season to reach the 100 point mark in the standings. Although they’ve enjoyed being ahead of the rest of the League by a healthy margin throughout the season, that lead has diminished as the regular season marches towards its conclusion. The annoyingly persistent Dallas Stars have narrowed the lead the Avalanche have over their Central Division rivals in recent weeks, but Colorado did get some help from the Minnesota Wild on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Dallas by a 2-1 overtime decision at Grand Casino Arena. The Avalanche currently hold a three point lead over Dallas, but today’s contest in Washington serves as Colorado’s game in hand in the standings. A win today will increase their lead to five points, with both teams having thirteen games remaining on their regular season schedules.
Head Coach Jared Bednar acknowledged the accomplishment after the win in Chicago on Friday. “We like what we’re doing right now. Obviously, there’s ebbs and flows to the season, but I think, to this point in the season, if you look at it as a whole, that we’ve put ourselves in a good spot here. We feel good about the way we’re playing. Making the playoffs is the first step to getting to where you want to go, so we’re pretty happy about that.”
Bednar may opt to return to Mackenzie Blackwood, who stopped 19 of 20 shots on Friday against Chicago, for today’s contest. Scott Wedgewood, who continues leading the League for the lowest goals against average (2.19), and now leads the League in save percentage (.916), could get the start on Tuesday in Pittsburgh should Bednar decide on starting Blackwood today.
Prior to leaving for Chicago, Bednar indicated that Ross Colton, Gabe Landeskog, Artturi Lehkonen, and Logan O’Connor would accompany the Avs on the road trip, and that all four were projected to return to the lineup at some point as the trip progresses. None of them were in the lineup on Friday evening in Chicago, and at the time of this writing, there are no updates on whether any of them would make an appearance against Washington today. However, Ivan Ivan, who was in action on Friday in Chicago, was reassigned to Loveland after the contest, which may indicate that at least one player may return to action today.
Both Colorado and Washington previously met on January 19 at Ball Arena. MacKinnon scored twice, Nečas had a goal and an assist, and Scott Wedgewood stopped 22 of 24 shots in that contest as the Avalanche skated to a 5-2 victory. Today’s game wraps up the season series against Washington.

Since their previous meeting against Colorado in January, Washington has hovered around the .500 mark, having won five of their final nine games prior to the Olympic break and six of their previous eleven games upon returning to action after the pause. As a result, Washington currently sits in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division, and are six points back of the final wild card spot, currently occupied by the Detroit Red Wings, in the Eastern Conference.
With three teams ahead of them as the season winds down, Washington’s chances of making the playoffs are slim. The trade deadline on March 6 saw the departures of Nic Dowd to the Vegas Golden Knights and cornerstone defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks, and the acquisition of forward David Kampf from the Vancouver Canucks and defenseman Timothy Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks. Since the deadline, Washington has gone 4-2-1, but comes into today’s contest against Colorado having won three of their four previous games. Their most recent victory came this past Friday against the New Jersey Devils by a score of 2-1.
The debut of Cole Hutson this past Wednesday saw the rookie defenseman score his first career goal with Washington. While his older brother Lane may have more name recognition across the League due to his play for the Montréal Canadiens, Capitals fans certainly may feel optimistic about what he can bring to the Washington blue line, especially after scoring in his debut. The loss of Carlson may certainly sting, but the future lynchpin on defense may already be right there in Hutson if his development follows a similar trajectory to Lane’s.
As noted in this space during the first preview article featuring Washington and Colorado, if you were asked who was leading Washington in goals, you’d probably say it was Alex Ovechkin. As it was back then, it is still Tom Wilson, but Ovechkin now shares the goal scoring lead with Wilson (25), and the lead in team points (52). Wilson, who was out with injury for the previous outing against Colorado, earned a silver medal with Team Canada along with goaltender Logan Thompson. Defenseman Jakob Chychrun is third among Washington skaters in points (51), second in goal scoring among all skaters (23, tied with Aliaksei Protas), and third in assists (28).
Thompson has won his three of his past five starts, and will likely start today against Colorado. He ranks third in goals against average among goaltenders (2.36), and fourth in save percentage (.915).
Today’s game against Colorado wraps up a four game home stand at Capital One Arena. Washington will begin a three game road trip out west on Tuesday.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced this morning that outfielder Mike Tauchman has a meniscus tear in his knee and will require surgery. That certainly takes the 35-year-old out of the equation for the Mets’ final decisions about their Opening Day roster, but assuming he stays with the organization, it is the sort of surgery that should give him an opportunity to join the Mets’ roster at some point this season.
Coming off a very solid 2025 season with the White Sox, Tauchman signed a minor league deal with the Mets in mid-February. And in Grapefruit League play, he hit .241/.371/.448 with a home run, putting himself on track to get a spot on the Mets’ roster to start the season.
With Tauchman sidelined, though, the starting gig in right field should belong to top prospect Carson Benge, who very well might’ve made the team even if Taucham hadn’t gotten hurt. After looking very good in the upper levels of the minors last year, the 23-year-old has looked fantastic in spring training games. He’s hit .368/.442/.447 in those exhibition games and will be an exciting player to watch as the season gets underway.

If you want a topic to start things off, the team has a bunch of decisions to make on the last few spots. Who gets the last one or two spots in the bullpen. Doesn’t Leo Jimenez get a spot, or do they DFA him? Would he clear waivers?
Eloy Jimenez? Does he get a spot over Davis Schneider? If he does, Leo has to get a spot. Eloy started the spring on fire, but didn’t carry it through to the end. But he hits the ball hard.
How many left-handed outfielders do we carry?
With Eric Lauer in the rotation, who is the long man? Do we need a long man? Are eight one-inning pitchers enough? Yariel Rodriguez is being paid a lot and can do 2-3 innings, and when one of the injured pitchers comes back, we know he can clear waivers.
A five-game skid has snuffed out the Phoenix Suns’ hopes of climbing into the Top 6 in the West, and tonight they’ll face a Toronto Raptors team fighting to avoid that same play-in jeopardy.
Toronto enters as the No. 5 seed in the East, but there’s really no breathing room, and my Raptors vs. Suns predictions and NBA picks expect Scottie Barnes & Co. to rise to the challenge, especially with Phoenix on the second night of a back-to-back set.

Raptors vs Suns best bet: Scottie Barnes Over 6.5 rebounds (-125)
Even if Victor Wembanyama has a hold on the Defensive Player of the Year award for the foreseeable future, Scottie Barnes belongs in the conversation this season, and I’m counting on another strong effort at that end of the floor tonight.
There’s nice value for this Over, with Barnes averaging 7.9 rpg this year and grabbing 7+ boards in three straight games.
The Toronto Raptors have the rest advantage, and that should show up on the glass, particularly with the Phoenix Suns' injuries on the wing. The Suns also take the fifth-most 3-pointers in the NBA, so there will be long rebounds to corral.

When the Raptors are at their best, Barnes is the spark, and RJ Barrett has also found a good rhythm lately, racking up 20+ points in eight of his last 10 contests and shooting 58% from the field in March.

Tauchman suffered a meniscus tear that requires surgery, an MRI revealed.
"Unfortunately, he’s going to be down for a while," Mendoza told reporters on Sunday.
Mendoza said that the team will have a better understanding of the timeline for Tauchman's return after he has surgery.
"He started feeling discomfort yesterday, and he got to a point where he couldn’t do it [anymore]," Mendoza said. "... Trainers kind of knew right away when he came out, because we sent him for an MRI."
The 35-year-old Tauchman was pushing for a roster spot, hitting .241 this spring with one home run, six RBI, and an .819 OPS. He seemingly grimaced in pain while running down the first-base line on Saturday, and then later could not get back to make a play on a ball over his head in the outfield.
Tauchman was likely the biggest competition for top prospect Carson Benge in terms of the starting right field job come Opening Day. Benge has looked the part this spring, but Mendoza would not make any declarative statements on Sunday about Benge's potential place on the big league roster.
As far as other right field options, Mendoza said that M.J. Melendez is not considered an Opening Day option right now, as he'll start the year in Triple-A, but the team does like their internal options.
"We feel good with the options that we’ve got here," Mendoza said. "Obviously, we’ve got a lot of guys who are playing well, but we know injuries happen. It sucks for him and obviously the team, but we feel pretty good with the guys that we’ve got here."

I will admit, I wasn’t able to snag everything — Jasson Domínguez, for example, posted about the Dominican Republic’s loss on his Instagram story even though he wasn’t there, which should help give you an idea just how much this tournament means to so many of these players. The Atlanta Hawks took on the Golden State Warriors in an out-of-conference contest on Saturday.
The Hawks have been rolling high as they were on an 11-game win streak but recently fell to the Houston Rockets. Atlanta went into this game as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference with things looking promising for their playoff push.
On the other hand, the Golden State Warriors have been down a bit with injuries to players like Jimmy Butler, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. Also, on the injury front, Golden State guard Stephen Curry did not play against the Hawks on Saturday due to his recovery from a knee injury. The Warriors were 33-37 before the game.
This was the second matchup between the two teams this season as the Hawks defeated the Warriors back in January of this year, 124-111.
The Hawks had a bit of trouble in the first half with multiple turnovers, some being consecutive. That allowed the Warriors to keep the game close in the first half as they were down 63-61. In the first half, Hawks guard Dyson Daniels led the team in points with 19 while guard CJ McCollum had four assists.
In the second half, the Hawks began to run away with the lead as the score was 100 to 81 near the end of the third quarter. Atlanta ultimately got the victory over the Golden State Warriors 126-110, led by Dyson Daniels scoring 28 points. Forward Mouhamed Gueye also had an impactful game, scoring 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
What’s Next For the Atlanta Hawks?
The Atlanta Hawks will have their next game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday at home. Memphis is currently 24-46 after a loss to the Charlotte Hornets. The Hawks have been hot at home as they’ve won multiple games in a row at State Farm Arena, and they’ll be in pursuit of another on Monday.
The Hawks are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, with a record of 39-32, and have just 11 games before the NBA playoffs. Atlanta has a great chance to make a run in the postseason, especially with the roster they have.

Happy Sunday, folks. To put a cherry atop your weekend, the Knicks (46*-25) host the Wizards (16-53) tonight at Madison Square Garden. Washington just wants to end their miserable season, yet given how New York plays down to competition, a sixth consecutive win is not guaranteed. I mean, it’s like 95% guaranteed, but I’m supposed to entice you to watch this laugher and not binge on Chuck Norris movies instead.
Over their last 10 games, the Knicks have gone 7-3, while the Wizards have lost 15 straight. Their last meeting came on February 3, 2026, when New York broke their wands, tore their robes, and ripped up their spellbooks, winning 132-101. Bridges led the Knicks with 23 points, while Will Riley delivered 17 off the bench for the home team.
The Wizards have had a dismal campaign. They score 112.5 points per game (25th in the league), plus have the 26th-rated offensive rating and the league’s worst defense. They allow 123.8 points per game, which is just barely not the worst of all.
Key Wizards players include Alex Sarr, who averages 16.5 points and 7.4 boards per game. Elder statesman C.J. McCollum provides 18.8 points per game while shooting 39% from three. Trae Young, acquired midseason, continues to be damaged goods. Spoiler: he won’t play today.
Washington lost by 21 to the Thunder last night. In the first half, their Justin Champagnie scuffled with Jaylin Williams and were among four players tossed due to the ensuing melee. Tonight’s likely starting five? Probably Bub Carrington and/or Sharife Cooper, maybe Champagnie or Bilal Coulibaly, and Alex Sarr.
The visitors have five players on their injury report—Tyus Johnson, Trevor Young, Lamar Black (GTD), plus Anthony Davis and Kenny George (out)—while the home team will be without Landry (knee) and Miles McBride. Josh Hart (knee) is a game-time decision.
Prediction
ESPN likes the Knicks at 94%. Holy moley! That might be the highest number of the season. The Wiz might fare better if they fielded a fleet of marching mop buckets. Or summoned the ghost of Wes Unseld. The Knicks have dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning the last 11 meetings. Everything indicates an easy win, but you know these guys. When we predict a blowout against a dog and they nearly lose; we say it will be close, and they win by a dozen. Is any other NBA team this wildly unpredictable? Whatever. Knicks by 25. You’re safe to catch an episode or two of Walker, Texas Ranger.
