Before Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers, Astros 3B Carlos Correa met with the media and discussed his recovery from a torn ankle tendon suffered during batting practice on May 5.
Correa was on the field doing drills before the game, and manager Joe Espada said Correa was healing “faster than expected”.
When asked if he could return this season, Correa replied, “I wouldn’t be doing all this work if I didn’t think there was a chance.”

The Guardians showed some fight last night losing 12-8. Yipee.
Travis Bazzana is embarrassing me at second base. He was at the center of the unraveling of that game in the fifth. The team basically needs to tell him to play DH until next season and then spend the offseason seeing if he can be come playable at second or left field. Hard to type, but it’s the truth. I still feel very good about his bat, but hard to understand how he can be this bad defensively.
The Guardians’ bullpen was also embarrassing yesterday. Tim Herrin is a joke. Hunter Gaddis, you’re welcome for nothing for sticking up for you as a 7th/8th inning guy.
Doesn’t matter which faceless lefty you throw out there, they are gonna have a good day against this team. How they haven’t cleaned house with hitting development folks is beyond me.
Jose Ramirez is clearly gonna be a diminished version of himself after the hamate surgery.
And, good news! We play the Diamondbacks one more time this afternoon!
The trade deadline is tomorrow at 6pm but I don’t even care right now. There isn’t one or two moves that’s gonna fix this team.

The Dodgers traded for Tarik Skubal as we all knew they would. Folks like Ken Rosenthal immediately and disingenously started asking “Why don’t other teams care as much about winning as the Dodgers do?” We are 100% missing the 2027 season because owners think they can leverage baseball’s inequities into a salary cap and players won’t be honest about the competitive balance issues for fear of giving owners a foothold to insitute a cap.
The White Sox added Luis Castillo who might not be good anymore. But, you don’t have to have good pitchers to beat the Guardians.

The Toronto Blue Jays close out their series with the St. Louis Cardinals today, sending Max Scherzer to the mound against left-hander Matthew Liberatore.
Toronto’s bats have a great matchup against a scuffling starter, and George Springer’s hot streak headlines my card.

There’s a real case that George Springer’s total bases is the best set-it-and-forget-it bet on the Toronto Blue Jays right now.
After a rough start to his season, Springer has been scorching, reaching base with a hit in seven straight games, including three total bases in Saturday’s win.
St. Louis Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore is a hot mess with an ice-cold Baseball Savant page, and just about anyone in the Jays lineup is liable to crank him for extra bases. The St. Louis bullpen has also been shaky this series, posting a 9.00 ERA, so Springer should get chances late as well.
The value at BET99 is phenomenal, and I’d play this to +110.

There are multiple reasons to like Kazuma Okamoto as a home run play here. He loves punishing a weak four-seamer, and Liberatore has a bad one, worth a -3 run value with a .533 xSLG against it. Okamoto is Toronto’s best four-seam hitter, slugging over .600 on the pitch.
Liberatore has also served up 13 home runs to right-handed hitters this year, and his batted-ball profile is tailor-made for a pull-heavy slugger like Okamoto. He allows a 23.7% pull-air contact rate, among the worst in the majors (league average is 17.7%).
Okamoto loves a chance to sell out and yank a fastball over the wall, so keep this to a quarter unit and watch for him to stay pull-happy on Sunday.

Will Jacob Misiorowski deliver another masterclass, or can the Los Angeles Angels pull off a shocker this afternoon?
Milwaukee is -126 on the run line, and my Brewers vs. Angels predictions and MLB picks for Sunday, August 2, see the Brewers taking down the Angels on the road.
If you see this game playing out the same way I do, Brewers run line is the best bet on the board.
I'm projecting Jacob Misiorowski to go seven innings and make the Los Angeles Angels look like your son's tee ball team. If that happens, the Milwaukee Brewers have a great chance to win this game by multiple runs.
The Brewers have been one of the hottest teams in baseball all season, and over their last 21 games they've posted a 113 wRC+, .334 wOBA, and .753 OPS. On the other side, the Angels have managed just a 91 wRC+, .299 wOBA, and .664 OPS over that same stretch.
Despite the favorable matchup for Misiorowski, I do think Milwaukee could have a tougher time scoring than most expect. Walbert Urena has been outstanding, posting a 1.13 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over his last three starts while allowing just a 2.38% barrel rate to opposing hitters.
That said, I'm not laying more than $2 on the Brewers moneyline. I'd rather take the run line, but if you prefer the moneyline, I'd play it down to -130.
COVERS INTEL: Jake Bauers is hitting .407 with a .704 slugging percentage and 1.171 OPS across his last 30 plate appearances against right-handed pitching.This matchup features more poorly-rated hitters (2) than elite or strongly-rated hitters (0) over on Batters-Box. With the way both Misiorowski and Urena have been pitching, I fully expect this game to stay low-scoring.
Misiorowski is the clear NL Cy Young frontrunner, while Urena owns a 2.77 ERA and 1.14 WHIP at home this season. This one has all the makings of a pitching duel.
The Angels, already one of the highest strikeout teams in baseball, are in for a long afternoon against Milwaukee's superstar rookie. At home this season, L.A. owns the second-highest strikeout rate in baseball at 26%, trailing only the Reds.
Over its last 21 games, that number has remained at 26%, the third-highest mark in the league. Meanwhile, Misiorowski has maintained an absurd 40.57% strikeout rate this season. Yes, 40.57%.
If either team is going to generate offense, I believe it will be Milwaukee. The Brewers have been swinging the bats well over their last 21 games, while I expect Misiorowski to keep the Angels in check.
Give me the Under, and I'd play it down to -115.

With Monday’s trade deadline looming, any lineup changes or pitching maneuvers get heavily scrutinized. Dodgers outfield prospects Zyhir Hope was slated to bat cleanup and Kendall George leading off for Double-A Tulsa, but were scratched from the lineup shortly before Saturday night’s game.
There was fire to this smoke, as Hope — coming off the best month of his career to date — was one of three players the Dodgers are sending to the Detroit Tigers for Tarik Skubal, along with pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith.
Josue De Paula was most notably not scratched from Tulsa’s lineup on Saturday night, and served notice as a reminder of his status as the Dodgers’ best prospect. De Paula homered twice, giving him three homers in his last two games.
De Paula this season has 19 home runs, seven more than his previous career high, and his 49 extra-base hits are 19 more than any other year for him.
De Paula also made this nice defensive play, a catch in left center field.
De Paula was also hit by a fastball on his left knee in the ninth inning, but remained in the game after a long check by the team trainer. He scored from second base on a single.
The Comets scored six runs in the middle innings and held on to beat the Las Vegas Aviators (A’s). Ryan Ward homered and drove in three runs. Zach Ehrhard had two hits and drove in a pair.
Jackson Ferris struck out six in his 5 2/3 innings, and allowed three runs, two of them earned.
Seth Halvorsen struck out two in a scoreless ninth for the save, and his final strikeout was completed on an ABS challenge to close out the win.
The Drillers fell behind early in a loss to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Royals). Down five late, Kole Myers hit a three-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning to cut the deficit to two runs. Three more reached base and the Drillers pulled to within a run, but Jake Gelof struck out with the tying and winning runs on base.
Christian Zazueta struck out five and walked none, but allowed seven runs (six earned) in his three innings, including giving up a pair of two-run home runs.
Chris Newell also homered as part of a two-hit game for Tulsa.
The Loons were down 7-0 after just an inning and a half before their game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres) was suspended by rain. The two teams will resume that game in the bottom of the second inning on Sunday at 9:05 a.m. PT, and finish that nine-inning game. Then they will play Sunday’s regularly scheduled game after, but shortened to seven innings.
A tie game in the seventh inning turned into a second straight blowout loss to the Fresno Grizzlies (Rockies). Fresno scored 12 runs in the final three innings.
Third baseman Oswaldo Osrio homered twice in a three-hit game for Ontario in defeat.
Triple-A: Right-handers Kyle Hurt and Wyatt Mills were both called up to the Dodgers. Charlie Barnes after clearing waivers was sent outright to Oklahoma City but elected free agency instead. First baseman Matt Gorski was placed on the injured list after last playing on Thursday.

The San Diego Padres have won seven of their last 10 games and are -150 favorites to grab another win this afternoon.
My Giants vs. Padres predictions and MLB picks expect their improved form at the plate to make the difference in a low-scoring game on August 2.
Michael King hasn’t pitched as well as the surface stats suggest, but he should continue to get away with it against the San Francisco Giants.
They sit 28th in hard-hit rate vs. righties over the past 10 games, and King owns a sparkling 1.95 ERA over eight starts against opponents who ranked Bottom-10 in that category in the 10 contests prior to squaring off.
The San Diego Padres rank second in wOBA and fifth in OPS against righties the last month, and should provide King — and a strong bullpen — enough support to win.

COVERS INTEL:King's 82nd percentile ranking in hard-hit rate will help him limit power and keep runs to a minimum.Some of it is smoke and mirrors, but King ranks in the 91st percentile in Pitcher Run Value and is taking on an underwhelming Giants offense. Landen Roupp is a high-end power neutralizer, allowing 0.63 HR/9 this season. His ability to keep the ball in the park limits bulk scoring and keeps the Giants in games.

John Gil broke a long homerless drought with a long shot for the Emperors, though his three RBI were not enough to lead Rome to a win. Patrick Clohisy had yet another multi-hit game for the Stripers and Sean Murphy had a hit in his rehab.
Gwinnett opened up August with a double-header and Patrick Clohisy opened up the month with another multi-hit game. Yet for Clohisy it wasn’t a particularly good day. His two singles weren’t hard hit balls and he went hitless in game two, his third hitless game out of his past five. Clohisy’s singles did come at fortunate times and he drove in two of the runs in Gwinnett’s blowout game one win which was headlined by Drue Hackenberg’s good start and the continuation of Sean Murphy’s rehab. Murphy has been hitting quite well in his games of rehab with Gwinnett so far, adding a hit in this one to make it four straight with a hit while playing all seven innings behind the plate. Murphy had a strikeout in the first inning and a couple of poorly hit balls the next two times up before finishing off his day with a single in the sixth inning. Drue Hackenberg has had an interesting time in Gwinnett, with flashes of success but the same lingering control issues that have always impacted him. Hackenberg’s stuff looks better this season now that he is healthier and his cutter/curveball combination is really giving Triple-A hitters fits, but he has not been in the strike zone near enough to give any indication he will be ready for a big league look anytime in the future. His walk rate is high, but even then he’s been reliant on getting a ton of chases out of the strike zone and in this game he had an abysmal 30% zone rate. He’s yet to have a single start with an average in-zone rate and only had five called strikes this entire outing. Getting hitters to chase out of the strike zone is certainly a skill and Hackenberg’s two best pitches are good enough to elicit chases, but he has to command the ball better to make use of those two offerings against better hitters.
Ha-Seong Kim played both games of the double header, and it was more of the same in what has been a rough stretch of games at the plate during rehab. He started out pretty well but hasn’t been hitting the ball squarely for the past couple of series and that extended to the double header where he didn’t have any real solid contact. His lone hit on the day was a 68 mph single in game one and he finished his rehab without ever having a multi-hit game. Gwinnett as a whole was no hit through four innings of the second game, only breaking through on a DaShawn Keirsey Jr. single that kicked off a rally for them. They had three hits in the inning and scored two runs to tie the game, but in the seventh inning wasted a golden opportunity that immediately came back to haunt them. Jair Camargo laced the hardest hit ball of the day for the Stripers, crushing one off of the top of the high left field wall in Durham that bounced in hard enough that the slow-footed Camargo couldn’t get more than a single out of. Luke Williams followed that up by lining one into left field and clearing the left fielder, but again it came off of the wall too hard for Camargo to have any chance to score, but with two runners in scoring position and one out Gwinnett was still primed to grab the lead. Cal Conley hit a grounder right to the pulled in second baseman for the second out, and Clohisy closed the door on a grounder to first base for the final out of the seventh. In the bottom of the frame Joel Payamps, forced into his longest outing of the season, gave up a walk-off two run home run.

It was not a banner day at the plate for the Clingstones. They managed just three hits as a team and despite a lot of great bullpen work couldn’t overcome an early deficit set by Shay Schanaman. Schanaman has been mostly a solid arm for Columbus out of the bullpen, but when pressed to start has not been successful in that role as he doesn’t really have the stuff to get through a lineup multiple times. He pieces his way through two innings with one run allowed, coming through with two clutch strikeouts to end the first inning and strand two runners in scoring position, but the game collapsed when the lineup flipped. He allowed two hits and a run in the third inning and was quickly pulled from the game, and Riley Frey allowed the inherited runner to score on a seeing-eye single up the middle. Trailing 3-0 Columbus needed a stop to the bleeding, and the bullpen really stepped up in that regard. Frey pitched well allowing only one more hit as he took the Clingstones through the fifth inning, and Isaac Gallegos was brilliant in a long relief role. Gallegos didn’t have the strikeout stuff he usually shows out of the bullpen, but kept the ball in the strike zone all day and got ground ball after ground ball on his sinker and slider to work three scoreless innings with only one hit allowed.
With the bullpen excelling there was ample opportunity for a Columbus comeback, an effort which started in the fourth inning. Luke Waddell ran into a home run, his second home run in as many days, getting the Clingstones on the board for the first time. In the sixth inning Dalton McIntyre led the inning off with a triple, and while Waddell didn’t have any more thump left in the bat he had an infield chopper that scored McIntyre and brought the Clingstones within a run of tying the game. Another hit in the inning with two outs gave them a sliver of hope for a crooked number on the scoreboard, but that never materialized. Neither did any other hint of a rally. Will Verdung worked a one-out walk in the next inning, but two straight strikeouts ended the inning and set off a poor streak of hitting to close the game. The next eight Clingstones went down in order, four via strikeout, to end the game, with a pinch hit fly ball from Adam Zebrowski falling harmlessly into the glove of the left fielder for the 27th out.

It’s been 40 days — 29 games — since the last time John Gil went deep, that is until he provided a long home run for Rome in an otherwise gross game of baseball. Gil was abysmal in July with a month-long .177 slugging percentage and an inflated strikeout total, and if it wasn’t for his 16 walks to push his OBP to .309 he would have been basically a zero factor player for the whole month. Gil’s OPS has declined month-over-month this season, following the same pattern of June and July slumping he showed last year, but this swing was the best for him in a long time and the only example in recent weeks of him getting a barrel on the ball. Whiffs and poor swing choices have piled up alarmingly, but this whole game was more a flash of the player Gil was for the first three months of the season. Even outside of his home run he didn’t have any bad at bats, and if there is anything to point to for Gil it’s that he has ten walks to eight strikeouts over his past ten games. This is a vast improvement over what we had been seeing especially regarding strikeouts since the start of June. Outside of Gil the offense was lackluster for a game that scored six runs. Rome took advantage of their chances when they had them, but they weren’t near plentiful enough to keep pace with Hub City and the top prospects on the team didn’t do anything. Hartman, Lodise, and Carey each had walks but didn’t have any impact with the bat though Hartman’s walk did extend his on base streak to 10 games. Lodise went strikeout-free this game and only has two strikeouts in five High-A games, and a total of five over his past ten total games. Lodise needs a whole lot longer stretch of making contact to prove anything meaningful, but it’s still absolutely a win for Lodise to have a stretch like this making contact at the plate while still having good days at the plate and making hard contact.
This game was fully unserious for the entire Emperors pitching staff. 11 walks, three hit batters, and only five strikeouts is just an unacceptable performance for a group at any level but especially in High-A. Cade Kuehler could do absolutely nothing right because he had no idea where the ball was going. Those three hit batters were all his, adding to the three walks he allowed, and when he did come into the strike zone he was getting pummeled. Kuehler had that stretch in May where it looked like he may cobble together a semblance of momentume for himself but it’s been 26 walks to 20 strikeouts in his past nine outings since. Kuehler losing so much development time is an excuse for him to an extent, but he’s never looked like a bat-misser as a professional even prior to being injured, and he’s backsliding after finding a brief bit of footing. The pre-draft command issues are in full force and his stuff has not rebounded, and while he should get another offseason he’s far enough away from Tommy John surgery that it isn’t really a factor in evaluations anymore. He just can’t make the pitches he needs to in order to find success and it’s unfortunate that he never really seemed to show any of the promise that was there at Campbell.

Randy Arozarena and the Mariners scraped across a walk-off win against the Twins yesterday to even the series at a game apiece. The Mariners followed up this rather underwhelming victory by trading Luis Castillo to the White Sox. Hickory starter Jacob Johnson, the team’s 11th round pick in 2025, made his full season debut with two shutout innings, striking out three. Michael Trausch struck out four and walked one in two shutout innings.
Pablo Guerrero was 2 for 3 with a double, a homer and a pair of walks. Marco Argudin was 2 for 5 with a homer. Curley Martha was 2 for 4 with a double. Noah Franklin was 3 for 5. Kaden Carpenter had a hit. Dewar Tovar doubled.
Izack Tiger started for Hub City and was outstanding, throwing four no hit, shutout innings, striking out seven and walking one. Owen Proksch allowed three runs in an inning of work, striking out one, walking one and giving up a homer. Brock Porter allowed three runs in four innings, striking out two and walking two.
Paxton Kling had a hit, a walk and three stolen bases. Casey Cook had a pair of walks, was hit by a pitch twice, and stole a base. Cook now had 6 HBPs in 57 plate appearances for Hub City this year. Gleider Figuereo was 2 for 3 with a double and two walks. Maxton Martin had a double and two walks. Marcos Torres was 2 for 4.
Frisco starter D.J. McCarty was pulled with two outs in the second inning, allowing three runs and walking four batters.
Dylan Dreiling was 2 for 4 with a double. Arturo Disla and Yeison Morrobel each had a hit.
Dalton Pence made his AAA debut in a start for Round Rock but only went 1.2 IP, allowing three runs, walking two and striking out one. Winston Santos threw a scoreless inning. Emiliano Teodo struck out three and walked one in 1.2 scoreless innings. Chris Martin needed three pitches to retire the one batter he faced. Marc Church struck out one in an inning of work, allowing one run. Alexis Diaz struck out one in a scoreless inning. Joe Ross struck out three and allowed a run in two innings.
Jarred Kelenic was 3 for 6 with a homer and a stolen base. Cody Freeman had a hit.

The Texas Rangers fell to the Houston Astros by a score of 5-4 last night.
Shawn McFarland writes the Rangers’ ongoing problems with the bases loaded hurt them again in the loss.
Brandon Nimmo hit the 10 year service time mark yesterday.
Jeff Wilson asks whether the Rangers should add another starting pitcher at Monday’s deadline.
If the Rangers do add a pitcher, it won’t be Tarik Skubal, who is reportedly heading to the Dodgers.
It also won’t be Luis Castillo, who the Chicago White Sox acquired from the Seattle Mariners last night.
Evan Grant says the decision to buy, sell or hold is a difficult one for the Rangers.
Evan Carter has performed quite well since coming off the injured list, and a better understanding of his swing is part of the reason why.
Texas signed their top 18 draft picks, exceeding their bonus pool in doing so.

For the first time in almost a year, San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller blew a save. He was put in a tenuous situation, entering the game in the top of the eighth inning with one out and the bases loaded for the San Francisco Giants who were trailing, 5-3. Miller struck out Grant McCray for the second out of the inning, but then rookie Osleivis Basabe ripped a 103-mph fastball into left field that tied the game at 5-5 before Miller got Bryce Eldridge to ground out on a tapper in front of the plate to end the inning.
The Padres were unable to score in the bottom of the eighth and Miller returned to the mound to work the top of the ninth. The right-hander recorded back-to-back strikeouts to open the inning but then allowed a walk to Rafael Devers. Miller wasted no time, throwing just two pitches to get Willy Adames to pop out to Xander Bogaerts at shortstop.
Bogaerts led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a line drive double to left field. Freddy Fermin dropped down a bunt, that he nearly beat out for a base hit, and was thrown out at first, allowing Bogaerts to move to third base with just one out. San Diego needed a fly ball to win the game and sent Gavin Sheets to the plate as a pinch-hitter for Jase Bowen. Sheets hit a weak ground ball toward third and was thrown out at first, leaving Bogaerts at third. Fernando Tatis Jr. came to the plate and was quickly intentionally walked which gave Jake Cronenworth a chance to play hero. He did just that winning a seven-pitch at-bat with a line drive single to center field that allowed Bogaerts to score to give the Padres a 6-5 walk-off win.
San Diego took a 2-1 lead in the series and will look to make that 3-1 with a win today in the final game of the four-game set at 1:10 p.m.

It’s just not very fun to watch the Yankees these days. Even if they’re in playoff position, the guys in the lineup right now aren’t the ones who put them in that spot. The Yankees’ starting pitching is doing yeoman’s work, with Max Fried following up nice outings from Gerrit Cole, Cam Schlittler, Ryan Weathers, and Will Warren with one of his own. But the offense is just paltry these days, and an E3/single/single rally combined with a Spencer Jones solo shot only gave them a 2-1 lead. Two of the better arms in the Yankees’ bullpen—Fernando Cruz and Brent Headrick—both had bad days, and that cooked the lead.
The Yankees aren’t giving their pitchers any margin for error, and that’s not even getting into the larger matter of the Rays and Red Sox barely losing anymore. Here’s what else was going on around the American League’s best on Saturday.
The White Sox scored six runs in Friday night’s win over the Rays, but they were back to the offense yesterday that frustrated their fans almost as much as the Yankees’ lineup did with their own diehards. They got four hits and a walk against Rays ace Drew Rasmussen, putting the leadoff man on in half of his six innings. But they never capitalized on those opportunities. Rasmussen fanned 10 while lowering his ERA to 2.91 on the season.
Chicago’s best chance came in the sixth, which Braden Montgomery began with a single. Tristan Peters got ahead of Rasmussen 2-0 before lining out to center. Chase Meidroth then flew out, but Edgar Quero delivered a two-out single, and a terrible throw to third by left fielder Chandler Simpson allowed Quero to move into scoring position as well. With a chance to make it 2-0 on a mere single, Sam Antonacci hit it hard to right—at 105.1 mph, it was actually the second-highest exit velocity of the day for Chicago—but Victor Mesa Jr. was there for the play.
The Rays weren’t exactly prolific themselves against the opener/bulk guy combo of Jordan Hicks and Noah Schultz and the relievers who followed. Nonetheless, they did score their one run, so it held up. Jonny DeLuca began the home half of the fifth with a single, stole second on a strikeout, and after Ben Williamson grounded out, catcher Nick Fortes cashed in the ribbie on a knock to left.
Down to their last licks in the ninth, Miguel Vargas hit Bryan Baker’s first pitch 372 feet to left, and it would’ve been gone to tie the game at Fenway and Wrigley. But at the Trop, it died at the warning track. Baker then got Colson Montgomery to ground out and Randal Grichuk went down swinging to end it.
At least Luis Castillo will cure Chicago’s offensive malaise. Wait, what?

Boston Red Sox (59-51) 3, Los Angeles Dodgers (69-42) 2: Not even Yoshinobu Yamamoto could cool down the Red Sox out west. Fresh off an absurd 21-4 July, they won again on August 1st as Ceddanne Rafaela clubbed two homers off Yamamoto and a leadoff double by Andruw Monasterio in the eighth turned into the go-ahead run on a bunt single and a grounder. The Dodgers mustered 10 hits and a pair of walks (largely against Payton Tolle), but their only scoring came on a Teoscar Hernández two-run shot in the second. So in a postgame rage* over actually losing a series for once, the Dodgers traded for the Tigers’** two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. That’s one way to cope.
*Yes, yes, I know that the deal was almost certainly completed before the final out. I am being silly. For fun.
**No, I don’t think the Tigers are going to go on another improbable post-sell run like they did in 2024, but also they’re only 2.5 games behind the Twins and Guardians for the last Wild Card spot. Texas, Baltimore, and Seattle are all ahead of them but… it’s possible!
Arizona Diamondbacks (59-52) 12, Cleveland Guardians (56-56) 8: Would you believe that the score in this one was 2-2 at the start of the seventh? Hunter Gaddis had one of his worst days as a professional and Franco Aleman got beat up as well during the D-backs’ seven-run seventh, which was capped by a three-run blast from Corbin Carroll. Nolan Arenado’s homer in the eighth made it 10-2, but deposed closer Paul Sewald almost gave it all back in his own nightmare eighth. A homer and four singles later, he was out of the game, and when Kevin Ginkel finished the frames, it was 10-7 (all runs charged to Sewald). The best reliever is always more offense though, and a two-run single by Geraldo Perdomo in the ninth added insurance in the 12-8 final.
Houston Astros (57-55) 5, Texas Rangers (55-56) 4: Sigh. The Astros returning to the top of the meager AL West wasn’t a one-day thing. They added a full game of separation between them and the previously-leading Rangers by beating up Jacob deGrom for five runs on seven hits; the former Mets great recorded just 10 outs. Texas made it a one-run game in the middle frames, but Houston held on for the W.
Seattle Mariners (54-58) 4, Minnesota Twins (56-56) 3: With rumors swirling of Jerry Dipoto and company considering a sell, the M’s absolutely needed a win if that clubhouse wanted any hope of staying together. Dipoto could still unload some folks, but Seattle at least eked out a walk-off win on Saturday. The 3-0 lead from the first couple innings (with a Randy Arozarena solo shot) vanished as Logan Gilbert faded in the middle frames. Homers by Luke Keaschall and Trevor Larnach chipped away, and an RBI groundout from Victor Caratini evened it at 3-3 in the seventh. Closer Andrés Muñoz entered to strike out Royce Lewis with runners on in the eighth, and after another scoreless frame in the ninth, his offense rewarded him.
Randy Arozarena led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on a deep fly. Minnesota challenged defending home run leader Cal Raleigh by intentionally walking Julio Rodríguez with one out to set up a double play. The struggling MVP runner-up hit a grounder to first, but while Lewis stepped on the bag for one out (rather than throwing to second to try to turn two on the slow Raleigh), his throw home to get Arozarena was late, securing the weird walk-off win. The Astros remain three games up on Seattle in the AL West.
(The M’s still dealt starter Luis Castillo after the game, but he’s less essential to the operation than almost everyone else in the rotation.)
