Scouting Report: What should Lakers fans expect from Quentin Grimes?

While not the biggest gamble of the offseason, the Lakers certainly committed a lot of belief and money into Quentin Grimes.

The team’s focus on getting younger and more athletic led them to Grimes, whom they signed to a four-year, $60 million deal. It’s a huge vote of confidence in his potential and that a likely starting spot and streamlined role will lead to big results in the coming seasons.

As we continue our series looking at some of the team’s free agent signings, we spoke to Paul Hudrick, site manager for Liberty Ballers, about Grimes’ time with the Sixers, where he flourished, and

What are his strengths?

When Grimes is going well, his physicality, fearlessness and versatility are major strengths. He was never able to replicate what he did to close the Sixers’ nightmare 2024-25 campaign, but you saw glimpses of it throughout last season.

He’s a physical guard with the ability to play on or off the ball. He can score at all three levels. He’s also an aggressive and physical player on the defensive end. If you’re looking for the most optimal version of Grimes, his Game 5 in Boston last year was it.

What are his weaknesses?

Grimes seemed to struggle last season with more stars on the floor. He started the season looking like a Sixth Man of the Year candidate. As Tyrese Maxey ascended, VJ Edgecombe improved and Joel Embiid and Paul George got healthier, Grimes seemed to fade into the background.

While that Game 5 performance highlights what Grimes can be, the rest of the playoffs showed where you might have concerns. He’d often disappear in games. He was also prone to strange mistakes and his shot selection could be questionable, perhaps being a bit overaggressive as his touches diminished.

From an outsider’s perspective, how do you see him fitting with the Lakers?

While he didn’t have much success with a fully healthy Sixers team, it’s fair to note the Sixers didn’t have anyone near the playmaking level of Luka Doncic last season. It’s also fair to note that Grimes had success playing alongside Luka in Dallas.

I’m curious how he’ll play next to Collin Sexton. I would imagine Grimes and Sexton will battle to be the first guard off the bench. Grimes’ ability defensively likely gives him the edge there playing next to Luka or Austin Reaves.

Anything else to know about him?

In the time I covered him, Grimes was a player who always left me wanting more. I’d see him yam on somebody, bury four threes a row with a hand in his face and then chest up someone like Jaylen Brown defensively, then he just wouldn’t have an impact for a long stretch.

His decision-making can be a bit maddening as well. I think he’s a good player and belongs in an NBA rotation, but there might be a reason he’s been on five teams in six years.

Wizards’ 2026-27 NBA Cup schedule includes national TV bout vs. Celtics

The Washington Wizards have released their 2026-27 NBA Cup schedule, which features four group-stage matchups across October and November.

Washington’s group — Group C — includes the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets. The team’s Nov. 24 matchup against the Boston Celtics at Capital One Arena will be aired at 8 p.m. on NBC.

While the full schedule hasn’t been released, it appears Trae Young’s first game in Atlanta since his January trade to the Wizards is scheduled for Nov. 6.

The Wizards are an NBA-worst 1-11 in NBA Cup games over the last three seasons. Their lone win came last season against the Hawks, who they’ll again face during this year’s group play.

Bob Iger, Joshua Kushner to buy Lakers from Mark Walter's ownership group for $12.5 billion

What a difference a year makes.

Less than a year after Dodgers owner Mark Walter bought the Lakers for a record-breaking sum, L.A.’s iconic NBA franchise is now being sold to Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger for $12.5 billion, sources familiar with the matter but not authorized to speak publicly confirmed to The Times, $2.5 billion more than the reported number when Walter bought the team in October from the Buss family.

Kushner, of permanent-capital holding company Thrive Eternal and younger brother of Jared Kushner, and Iger, Disney’s former chief executive, were recently looking into an expansion franchise as the NBA eyed new teams in Seattle and Las Vegas. Walter, who also owns the Dodgers and the Sparks, has been at the center of a federal loan investigation. The Dodgers and Sparks were not involved in the deal, according to a source familiar with the transaction but not authorized to speak publicly.

“As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world,” Kushner and Iger said in a statement. “We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.”

Jeanie Buss, whose family owned the Lakers for more than four decades, remained the governor of the Lakers despite the family selling the team to Walter last year. She remained a fixture at games, sitting courtside during the season, with Walter occasionally joining her or sitting courtside near the baseline. The NBA announced in October after the sale was finalized that Buss would be the team’s governor for at least five years.

“Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life — an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family,” Walter said in the statement to ESPN, who first reported the sale Wednesday morning. “I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead.”

Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the L.A. Times Media Group and minority owner in the Lakers, welcomed his new business partners on social media.

“Go Lakers!” he posted on X. “Congrats Bob and Josh.”

Iger stepped down from his role as Disney CEO in mid-March, but remains on the board of directors through December. The longtime executive and his wife Willow Bay, the dean of USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, bought a controlling stake in NWSL club Angel City FC in 2024 and led a project to build an NFL stadium in Carson before the NFL instead returned to Inglewood, where Rams owner Stan Kroenke built SoFi Stadium.

Kushner also owns a minority stake in the Miami Heat, which he bought in 2024 and must now sell to finalize the Lakers purchase. He was previously a minority owner in the Memphis Grizzlies. This year, his venture capital firm Thrive Capital launched Thrive Eternal, which is focused on long-term ownership of a small number of iconic franchises and cultural institutions, and acquired a stake in the San Francisco Giants as its first foray into sports. Thrive Eternal was at the center of a plan to buy tournament rights to the FIFA World Cup, but the controversial deal collapsed amid outrage, including a boycott from UEFA, the governing body for European soccer.

“Both of them love basketball,” Lakers legend Magic Johnson said in an interview with The Times. “And I think they’ll take us in the right direction. … First I was happy because it was Mark Walter and now I’m even happier that it’s Bob Iger and Josh Kushner so we got the right two people to own the team. Bob lived here, Bob worked here, on and on and on. And he wants to win. Both of them want to win. And you gotta have people who want to win. They’ll bring all the resources and make sure they bring a championship to Laker fans and L.A.”

In his short tenure, Walter and TWG Global started remaking front-office and business operations with the Lakers. The franchise was investing in assistant general manager positions this offseason, growing its sports science resources with the help of the Dodgers and moving G League operations from the South Bay to the Coachella Valley. Lakers general manager and president of basketball Rob Pelinka called the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers and Lakers “brother-sister” organizations.

Despite being one of the NBA’s marquee franchises, the Lakers, who had been a family-run team for 46 years since Jerry Buss bought the franchise in 1979, were starting to fall behind in the booming NBA business. Within months of buying the team, Walter installed Dodgers executive Lon Rosen to oversee business operations. Rosen added new roles to drive revenue, oversee business strategy and grow interest in the franchise domestically and internationally.

The Lakers added a second row for courtside seats during playoff games, sold a uniform sponsorship to Daiso for the Laker Girls dance team and agreed to a new jersey patch deal with Albert, a personal financial assistant app. The team also laid off more than a dozen employees in May, soon after the season ended with a second-round playoff sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The best MLB free agents this offseason, and how lockout could change it all

Usually, there is no reason to focus on MLB free agency in August. It's three months away and there's playoffs to worry about.

Except this year, baseball's traditionally drawn-out free agency period is expected to be a frenzy, condensed into the three weeks between the end of the World Series and the end of the collective bargaining agreement.

The market opens five days after the World Series ends. The labor deal expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1, and a lockout is widely expected the moment it does. The last one ran 99 days and froze every signing and trade in the sport. This one could be worse, because the owners want a salary cap and the union has spent decades saying that's not even in the conversation.

So, the players about to hit the market are looking at a narrow chance in November where deals can actually get done under the current CBA before the expected lockout.

These last two months will matter more than they normally would. Almost every name in this free agent class just changed teams at the deadline. Tarik Skubal is a Dodger. Freddy Peralta is a Ray. Luis Arraez is a Phillie. Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes are Cubs.

They're all auditioning somewhere new, right now, for a market that might slam shut before anyone gets their money.

Here's the top free agents heading into 2027 ... or 2028:

Why Tarik Skubal is the only sure thing on the market

He is the class of the class and it isn't close. Two Cy Youngs, 29 years old, chasing the biggest contract ever handed to a starting pitcher. He had a bone chip taken out of his elbow earlier this year, which is the only question about an otherwise simple market.

His agent, Scott Boras, doesn't mind a slow winter − he's managed them before. He has the ace of the class and the wallets will open up for him whenever the business of baseball returns to wins and losses.

Top MLB free agent pitchers for 2027

The class has pitching depth, but most of it comes with questions attached. These aren't guys sailing into November on career years, they are trying to prove something in these last six weeks.

Freddy Peralta, 30, went 17-6 last year with a 2.70 ERA and finished fifth in the Cy Young voting. He's 5-9 with a 5.33 ERA this year and struggles to miss bats. He has the last few weeks with the Tampa Bay Rays and their magic pitching factory to resurrect his free agent value.

Kevin Gausman is 35 − he'll 36 by Opening Day − and he's been a middle-of-the-rotation arm this season. But he's made 31 starts every year since 2022, and somebody always pays for innings. He's continuing his case with the Cubs after Toronto dealt him.

Behind them are Shane Bieber, 30; Brandon Woodruff, 33; Robbie Ray, 34; and Luis Severino, 32.

The best position players in the 2027 free agent class

There aren't many bats available in this class.

Luis Arraez, 29, is a three-time batting champ who just landed in the Phillies lineup, which is about the best setup he can get two months before he hits the market. Jazz Chisholm Jr., 28, and Randy Arozarena, 31, come after him. Ian Happ, 31, Brandon Lowe, 32, Seiya Suzuki, 31, J.P. Crawford, 31, Trent Grisham, 29 and Taylor Ward, 32, are also in this thin group.

Gleyber Torres, 29, is worth watching too. He is only one of three second baseman in this class who hasn't turned 30 yet.

Which MLB players will opt out after the 2026 season?

Injuries took care of a lot of these decisions.

Corbin Burnes, 31, can walk away from four years and $140 million in Arizona. He had Tommy John surgery in June 2025 and has yet to return, so he's probably not going anywhere. Jose Berrios, 32, had Tommy John in May and won't pitch again until the middle of 2027. It will certainly be with Toronto.

Michael King has been here before. The 31-year-old hit the market last winter and came right back to San Diego for three years and $75 million. The deal lets him leave after this season with a $5 million buyout instead of collecting $53 million over the next two years. If he's healthy, he's probably taking the buyout.

Clay Holmes, 33 is an interesting case. He closed for the Yankees, made two All-Star teams doing it, then turned into a legitimate starter with the Mets. He suffered a broken fibula in May and just made his first start back and after being dealt to the Cubs. He has a $12 million option and if he has a strong August, September and October, he will decline.

Bo Bichette, 28, is the genuinely interesting one. He signed for three years and $126 million with the Mets, including opt-outs every season. Walking after his first miserable season in Queens is over means giving up $84 million after hitting .236. Still, many in the business believe he will leave.

Why the pending MLB lockout makes November a deadline

Every player here knows what's coming. Take the November deal and there is the security of knowing exactly what you have, or wait it out and find out what the new rules look like − with nobody able to tell you when the waiting ends.

The unofficial deadline for losing regular season games is early-to-mid-March. That's a long time to sit unemployed.

The guys with the least leverage will try to sign in November. Teams know that and will take advantage of it.

Skubal, on the other hand, can wait as long as he likes. The money will be there.

2026 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Jacob Webb is the Superhero vs. the Nationals

The Cubs are now 8-2 in August after what was a really nice win in Washington. The Nationals are almost certainly going to miss the playoffs again, but they have a talented and young team. If you missed the stat, the Nats have had exactly one plate appearance by a player 29 or over, and that was by Miles Mikolas of all people. Even if that changes in September after roster expansion, they should set a nearly unbeatable record. The future is bright and the present isn’t all that dim. They stubbornly fought this game all of the way down to the last pitch.

Alas, the Cubs got just enough of everything to pull out yet another win. This was another team effort, with at least half a dozen players making significant contributions. This offense is relentless, this defense is excellent. They just need to pull together enough pitching to be able to hold the line when an opposing pitcher is going off and shutting them down. Can they do that? That is the question.

Let’s break out the perspective check before we further discuss this. Four teams with more wins than the Cubs. The Cubs now own a 6.5 game lead on the first Wild Card spot. The Diamondbacks have caught the Phillies for the second spot. The Brewers got clobbered in San Diego and just like that, the Cubs are only four out in the division. I think it’s probably a little too early to get excited about that. But definitely time to start peeking over the fence a little. The Cubs are now on a 94.5 win pace. The Cubs are a season high 20 games over .500 and only need to split their remaining games to win 91. This team is starting to feel like the 2015 Cubs to me.

This was a game shaped a little unusual for this 2026 season. The Cubs fell behind early, trailing by two after each of the first two innings. But they scored in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings (and added an insurance run in the eighth). That turned a two-run deficit into a four-run lead heading to the bottom of the eighth. The Cubs have come from behind all across the map. They score so many runs that it isn’t terribly unusual for them to trail at some point and then bounce back. But usually once they get their offense going, they take off and leave the other team in the dust. I thought for a minute this one would go that way.

I thought wrong. That led to Jacob Webb being called upon for a four-out save. One of the fun things about a guy ascending to the closer role mid-season is that you sometimes end up with a multi-inning closer. Webb has seven saves to lead the team and in three of those he recorded more than three outs. He’d twice previously recorded six-out saves. That’s the benefit of Monday’s off day and having a very well-rested bullpen. Even with four relievers being used, there will be four other relievers with at least two days of rest heading into Wednesday’s game.

Offensively, the Cubs were fairly efficient. They had nine hits and drew five walks and had two HBPs. They turned that into eight runs. That’s a strong offensive output. Unsurprisingly, there were three homers and a couple of doubles. One of the walks scored, one of the walks drove in a run and one of the hit by pitches contributed to another run scoring. Free bases, they will kill you.

The Cubs survived a subpar start and a subpar evening out of the bullpen. That’s generally hard to do. But this team is playing exceptional baseball right now. Keep it rolling.

Three Positives plus Pete:

  • Alex Bregman had another excellent night at the plate. He worked long counts all night, had a homer and a single, drew a walk and scored three times.
  • Jacob Webb’s four out save was enormous.
  • Seiya Suzuki had a double and a homer, he drove in two runs.
  • Pete hit his 27th homer of the year. He’s had such a strong year that he homered and saw his wRC+ drop on the season. He already has 30 steals, so he’s just three homers away from back-to-back 30/30 seasons. At 24 years of age. Bobby Witt Jr. and Julio Rodriguez are two active players that got their second such season in their age-24 season.

He’s had no decisions in his last two starts despite allowing two earned runs in 11. 1 innings. Jackson Kent gets the call for the Nats to make his MLB debut. The 23-year-old lefty is 9-4 with a 3.72 in 20 starts (94.1 IP) across two levels this season. He averages more than a strikeout an inning and has allowed opponents a .216 batting average. He’s done a little worse at Triple-A, so there is some question if he’s ready yet for this test. He was a fourth round pick out of the University of Arizona in the 2024 draft. He’s originally from Roselle, IL. So I imagine he has some thoughts one way or the other about debuting versus the Cubs. He was 13 when the Cubs won their championship.

Mark Walter selling Lakers for record $12.5 billion to Josh Kushner, Bob Iger

Just 14 months ago, Mark Walter bought the iconic Los Angeles Lakers for an NBA record $10 billion, ending the franchise's run as a family-run business. Now he is flipping the team for a cool $2.5 billion profit.

In a stunning turn of events, Walter is selling the Lakers for a new record $12.5 billion to American businessmen Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, a story broken by Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. This sale ultimately will have to be approved by the league's Board of Governors (made up of the other 29 owners), but that seems a mere formality (as it was for Walter 10 months ago). Kushner and Iger were in discussions about buying the expected NBA expansion team in Las Vegas, meaning the league certainly has already started the vetting process.

Kushner and Iger gave this statement to Shelburne:

"As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles."

Walter issued this statement to Shelburne.

"Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life – an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family. I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead."

It's worth noting that federal investigators have been looking into Walter and his conglomerate and holding company, TWG Global, for alleged fraud tied to insurance companies it owns (based on reports from a whistleblower), according to reporting in the Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times. Walter and TWG have denied any wrongdoing. It's unclear if the investigations had any impact on the sale of the team. Walter is not selling the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of, or adjacent to, this deal.

It's unclear what percentage of the team the Buss family will retain through this sale. It still had a 15% ownership stake after the sale to Walter, and Jeanie Buss was continuing as governor of the team, overseeing day-to-day operations.

Since taking over the Lakers, Walter has been aggressive in reshaping the Lakers' front office and scouting staff, which had been one of the smallest in the NBA despite the size of the Lakers' brand. The Lakers have been building out a much more robust and diversified front office, with Rob Pelinka still in charge as general manager. Walter made sweeping changes to business-side personnel as well, changing much of the organization.

Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, however, Josh does not have a role in the White House. Kushner founded Thrive Capital, which is a venture capital firm that invested in companies such as Instagram and OpenAI, among others. Kushner is worth an estimated $5.2 billion.

Iger is well known in Southern California for his two turns as the CEO of the Walt Disney Company. He is a consultant with Thive.

George Springer has cashed this play in two consecutive games against the Boston Red Sox, and we’re getting some tremendous value for him to do it one more time.

Now, Springer hasn’t seen a ton of Robert Suarez over the course of his career, but when he has, he’s found his way on base. How much were the Lakers sold for? NBA franchise fetches record $12.5 billion

The Los Angeles Lakers are being sold for a record $12.5 billion less than two years after Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner and TWG Global CEO Mark Walter bought the team from the Buss Family. The deal was first reported by ESPN.

The sale to businessman Joshua Kushner and former Disney CEO Robert Iger would mark the highest amount ever paid for a North American sports franchise, surpassing the $10 billion that Walter paid for the Lakers.

"As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles," Kushner and Iger said in a statement.

Walter bought the Lakers in 2025 from the family of Dr. Jerry Buss, who owned the franchise from 1979 until his death in 2013. At the time of his death, the franchise was passed on to his six children, with his daughter Jeanie becoming the team's governor and being named controlling owner in 2017.

Buss remained the governor even with the sale to Walter, as the team moves forward in a new era with superstar Luka Doncic, but must replace the production of NBA all-time scoring leader LeBron James, who led them to a championship in 2020 but left in free agency this summer to join the Philadelphia 76ers.

Walter has not commented on why he is selling the team, but two companies tied to Walter are currently under federal investigation as the government looks into the financial dealings of the billionaire’s businesses.

"Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life – an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family. I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead," Walter said in a statement.

Coming in as one of the new Colorado Avalanche signings of this summer’s free agency class is left shot defenseman Domenick Fensore. Originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round of the 2019 NHL draft, the 24-year-old defenseman is coming off a solid AHL campaign with the Chicago Wolves. In his third season with Chicago, Fensore posted career highs in goals (10), assists (25) and points (35) in 60 regular season games.

Fensore was a fixture on the Chicago blue line during the Wolves’ playoff run. In 18 playoff games, he recorded four goals and two assists. One of his goals came as a shorthanded tally during Game Three of the Western Conference Final against the Colorado Eagles, where Fensore will likely spend the upcoming season. Fensore’s regular season numbers would have placed him second in goal scoring among Eagles defensemen, just one shy of the now-departed Jack Ahcan, who had eleven (11) goals in 61 regular season games. Fensore should fit right into the role of offensive defenseman with the Eagles.

Fensore’s prospects of breaking into the Avs lineup are pretty slim, provided that the blue line doesn’t get rocked by a rash of multiple injuries at the same time. That said, the 5’8” Ahcan was (somehow) an appealing option to Avs head coach Jared Bednar at various points in the regular season and playoffs, and if a rash of injuries strike at the likes of Sam Malinski, Josh Manson, or Cale Makar, perhaps the 5’9” Fensore may see some limited NHL usage. He does have three games of NHL experience, all with the Carolina Hurricanes, in which he produced zero points.

Fensore’s AHL playoff experience may prove beneficial for the Eagles this season. Colorado had Chicago on the ropes in their Western Conference Final series, but ultimately fell short in their bid for their first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance, losing in a winner-take-all Game Seven. Will Fensore be a difference-maker for the Eagles this season? Tough to say at this point, but it could be a compelling reason to keep an eye on how things play out in Loveland as the season progresses.

Most of us here on staff ranked Fensore in the mid-to-low teens in our rankings, with Ryan being the most skeptical of us at 28. The 24-year-old will be serviceable on the blue line in Loveland, but being tasked to serve in an NHL-level capacity may be beyond his capabilities.

Red Sox Minor Lines: Mikey Romero, Franklin Arias shine in loss

It was close, but in a game that featured twenty-seven hits between the two teams, the WooSox fell just short against the Bison (Blue Jays AAA) after a late rally. Mikey Romero had a two-RBI single to score Mickey Gasper and Franklin Arias (both of whom looked good Tuesday, obviously good enough to get within scoring position) to add to his sac fly. The former first rounder has hit .364 with an OPS of 1.072 in the month of August. This one was decided early in retrospect, though; John Holobetz finally looked a bit too human after an awesome start to his Triple-A campaign, was pulled early, and the bullpen (mostly Eduardo Rivera) didn’t help matters on a night where the offense certainly did enough to win most other games.

Portland: L, 16-4 (BOX SCORE)


By the time the Sea Dogs got a ball over the fence, Brooks Brannon’s 19th of the season that also scored Jack Winnay, the score was 16-4 and the expected winning percentage stayed securely at 0.1%. The Rumble Ponies (Mets AA) had an outstanding sixth inning off the mitt of Cooper Adams, beckoning seven runs and turning a 7-1 game into an absolute laugher. The game didn’t start off right as Dalton Rogers allowed a first-inning home run to Jefferson Rojas and the pitching staff then allowed two doubles to the young shortstop. That was just one indication of a night that would just not let up. 

Greenville: PPD in 3rd, Make-Up Today


The Drive have a pretty good handle on this one as the rain came down too quickly in Spartanburg (Astros High-A) to continue. They’re up 5-0 in the third, having jumped to an early lead thanks to Isaiah Jackson’s 16th of 2026. “First” pitch at 5:00.

Salem: L, 3-2 (BOX SCORE)


The bullpen held up their end of the bargain against Delmarva (Orioles A) on Tuesday night, allowing just one hit after the third, but the offense was extremely lackluster, getting just six total bases on the night and only drawing two walks. As a result, the RidgeYaks were unceremoniously walked off without recording an out in the bottom of the ninth. Franklin Primera had two hits as he and Skylar King remain maybe the two most intriguing batting prospects in Salem, but when you can’t get the ducks across the pond… I can’t think of an analogy to end this, but you get the point, it’s tough to win.

AAA: Sugar Land Space Cowboys (59-55) lost 9-8 (BOX SCORE)

Hendrickson started for Sugar Land but struggled allowing 7 runs, 4 earned, over 6 innings of work. The offense got on the board in the 4th inning on an Alexander 3 run home run. They got 2 more runs in the 5th on a Biggio RBI triple and Ferreras RBI double. An Alexander double in the 7th brought Sugar Land within a run. In the 9th, Sugar Land tied it on a Brooks walk. The game went to extras and in the 10th, Salazar drove in a run on a sac fly. Unfortunately Santa wasn’t able to hold the lead as Sugar Land fell 9-8.

Note: Alexander has 20 home runs this season.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (52-57) won 3-2 (BOX SCORE)

Dombroski started for the Hooks and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. The Hooks got on the board in the 2nd inning on a Call sac fly and Holy RBI double. In the 5th, Bush connected on a solo home run. Mancini went 2.1 innings in relief allowing 2 runs, 1 earned. He was followed by Perez who tossed 2 scoreless innings. The rest of the pen was solid as they closed out the 3-2 win.

Note: Bush has a .792 OPS this season.

A+: Asheville Tourists (37-70) won 14-9 (BOX SCORE)

Asheville got on the board in the first inning scoring 2 runs on a Moss RBI double and Garcia RBI single. They scored 5 more runs in the 2nd inning on a fielder’s choice, Neyens walk, Huezo walk, Moss sac fly and Walker sac fly. In the 3rd, the offense got 4 more runs on a Newman groundout and Huezo 3 run home run. Potter got the start and allowed one run over 3 innings of work. Santos pitched in relief and allowed 6 runs but the offense got another in the 4th on a Newman single and then 2 runs in the 7th on Newman and Thomas back to back home runs. Varela allowed a couple of runs in the 9th but held on as Asheville won 14-9.

Note: Huezo has a .839 OPS in High-A.

MLB Home Run Props & Predictions Today: Best HR Picks & Parlay for Aug. 12

Dinger Tuesday was good to me, with two of three cashing for +7 units and one step closer to digging out of what seemed like an impossible home run hole. MLB player props have been better for me in the summer months. Let's crush Wednesday.

It's not every week that I get to back two of the best NL bats at +EV prices, but why not get the two NL MVP frontrunners at good prices with plus matchups? The lefty-on-lefty situations are adding to the value and shouldn't concern bettors today in these two dinger props. 

These are my favorite MLB home run props for Wednesday, August 12.

Home run prediction: Shohei Ohtani (+276)

Shohei Ohtani for a homer at +250 or better is usually a price point for me, but it’s not something we see daily, with his average HR price closer to $2. I’m a Pete Crow-Armstrong guy all the way for NL MVP right now, but I’m willing to back Ohtani at this price against the Kansas City Royals and their bullpen.

Lefty Daniel Lynch is getting the start, which is why the price is higher with the lefty-on-lefty matchup. However, Lynch threw just 35 pitches and recorded five outs in his last turn, his first start of the season, before handing things over to the relievers. Kansas City currently has no left-handed options in its bullpen, which sets up well for Ohtani later in the game.

Since 2024, 71% of Ohtani’s home runs have come against right-handed pitching, so the matchup gets considerably better once the Royals go to their right-handed relievers.

Dodger Stadium is also a favorable home run environment, with some of the shortest fence distances in MLB. THE BAT has the fair price all the way down to +220.

Home run prediction: Pete Crow-Armstrong (+344)

This is a huge outlier price at Polymarket. I hit this winner last night at +325, and tonight’s matchup is just as good, with a fair price of +260.

Pete Crow-Armstrong launched a 111-mph missile last night and has moved to -125 as the NL MVP betting favorite. He saw Jake Irvin last night but can do some damage against the Washington Nationals and rookie left-hander Jackson Kent, who is making his first MLB start.

The southpaw started the year at Double-A and is getting the promotion after Zack Littell was finally designated for assignment. Kent was a strikeout-per-inning pitcher at Triple-A this year but also allowed eight home runs over 63-plus frames. He’s tough on lefties from a batting average perspective, but left-handed hitters have taken him deep at a rate similar to righties.

Nothing cute here — just backing a great bat in a great spot at a great price with my MLB picks.

Lakers sold for $12.5 billion to Josh Kushner, Bob Iger

In a completely unexpected and shocking move, the Lakers are reportedly being sold again.

On Wednesday morning, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported that the franchise was being sold for a record-breaking $12 billion to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger.

Shortly after the news came out, Kushner and Iger released a statement to ESPN confirming the sale.

The full statement reads as such:

“As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.”

This sale is only for the Lakers as Shelburne reported Mark Walter was not selling the Dodgers in this move while Dan Woike of The Athletic reported the Sparks are not included. Walter also released a statement to ESPN.

Here is his statement in full:

“Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life – an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family. I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead.”

To say this sale is shocking would be an understatement. It was only in mid-June of last year that news first broke of Walter buying the Lakers. The sale was not finalized until late October of last year. This means the franchise will have been sold twice in barely more than a year.

For now, it’s unclear what caused this sale, but it’s not hard to look at the ongoing federal investigation into Walter and assume that had a role. Without knowing much about the investigation, many people will likely try to connect dots and assume something is going on with that investigation that prompted Walter to sell the team.

Even if that is the case, he sold the team for a profit after owning it for less than a year. When he purchased the Lakers, it was at a valuation of $10 billion. Fast forward to 2026 and he made $2.5 billion on the sale.

There’s certainly a lot to unpack from all this with lots of the answers we’re looking for not coming for some time. First, who are Kushner and Iger and what experience do they have in running a team?

Well, Josh Kushner is, in fact, Jared Kushner’s brother, which means the Lakers are alarmingly close to Donald Trump now. He is also a minority owner of the Miami Heat, a move he made back in early 2025 that he will now, obviously, have to divest from. To acquire a stake in the Heat, he sold his stake in the Grizzlies, which he acquired in 2019. That’s all to say he does have a history of being around the NBA.

Outside of basketball, sports fans more recently likely heard his name as part of the FIFA World Cup controversy in which FIFA President Gianni Infantino was attempting to sell stakes of competitions to private investors, specifically to an investment fund run by Kushner. The plan backfired spectacularly and might cost Infantino his job, so Kushner pivoted to buying the Lakers, it seems.

Iger is likely a name sports fans have at least heard before as he served as the CEO of Walt Disney Company for nearly 20 years. When it comes to sports ownership, he is the majority owner of Angel City FC, the LA-based National Women’s Soccer League franchise.

Another fair question from this is what happens to Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka. The answer is that we don’t know and likely won’t for some time.

With Jeanie, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this is the end of the road. Her agreement to stay with the team was with Walter. If he is no longer the controlling owner, that deal won’t exist. It was already a very unique deal that was hard to grasp, so it’d be a surprise if another set of owners agrees to a similar deal.

As for Pelinka, his immediate future is not in any imminent danger. It took months to finalize the deal last time around, so we’ll likely be well into the season once this move gains league approval and becomes official. It’s unlikely, as much as some Lakers fans may want it, that the new owners are going to come in and immediately clean house during the season.

To that point about the front office, though, this will end the partnership between the Dodgers and Lakers, which had grown throughout the last year. All of the expansion of the front office that was ongoing under Walter likely will be put on hold to some degree.

There are a lot of questions that won’t have answers for some time and a lot to unpack from this. But what a shocking bit of news that no one anticipated.

Lawrence and Daly lose England central contracts as Borthwick looks to World Cup

Ollie Lawrence and Elliot Daly have both lost their central contracts, with Steve Borthwick omitting the pair from his 25-man squad a year before England’s World Cup campaign begins.

Neither Lawrence nor Daly – who was nursing an arm injury – featured in the three Nations Championship matches this summer but both played during the Six Nations and are the standout exclusions from Borthwick’s selections which point towards his thinking for the World Cup squad next year.
