Former Duck Brings Oilers One Step Closer to Stanley Cup Final

Since being bought out by the Ducks in June 2019, Corey Perry has been to five of the last six Stanley Cup Finals with the Montréal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning and Edmonton Oilers. He is one Oilers win away from being in six of the last seven.

The Oilers have lost just twice in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs after going down 2-0 to the Los Angeles Kings in the first round. After winning four straight against the Kings, they easily dispatched the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. A series-opening loss to the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final has become merely a blip as the Oilers have rattled off three consecutive wins, with Perry scoring the game-winning tally in Game 4 on the power play.

Per NHL Public Relations, Perry’s goal, his sixth of the playoffs, is tied for the most by a player age 39 or older in a single postseason, matching Teemu Selanne (6 in 2011 with Anaheim), Mark Recchi (6 in 2010 with Boston), Ron Francis (6 in 2002 with Carolina) and Jean Béliveau (6 in 1971 with Montréal). Perry also became the fifth active player to score 60 career playoff goals, joining AlexOvechkin (77), Sidney Crosby (71), Evgeni Malkin (67) and Brad Marchand (60).

“We found a way after (Dallas tied it) to put one over the line and the power play came through tonight,” Perry said to reporters after the game.

Perry, who turned 40 a little under two weeks ago, isn’t just a long for the ride either. He’s been a valuable contributor, doubling his points total from last year’s run and tying his points total from his two previous postseason performances. Most of his ice time in this season’s playoffs has come alongside Leon Draisaitl and Oilers captain Connor McDavid. Unsurprisingly, the dynamic duo plus Perry are outshooting and outscoring opponents by a wide margin at 5-on-5.

Oilers' Corey Perry Is Their Big Playoff X-FactorOilers' Corey Perry Is Their Big Playoff X-FactorEDMONTON – Every team has one.

He’s been a staple on the power play as well, pitching his tent in the five-foot area around the crease and doing his best to cause havoc for the opposing goaltender. Both of Perry’s points in the Game 4 win came on the power play.

It’s been 18 years since Perry lifted the Stanley Cup for the first (and only) time in celebration. He’s come agonizingly close to doing so on several occasions in the years since. The Oilers are looking to ensure he’ll have another chance to raise Lord Stanley once again.

The Anaheim Ducks' Pitch to Mitch Marner in Free Agency

Devin Williams has another rocky 9th inning for the Yankees, but the embattled reliever hangs on

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Devin Williams’ first two months with the New York Yankees have been a roller coaster ride, and his first save in nearly six weeks was full of even more thrills and chills.

Williams gave up two runs and three hits in the ninth inning, but the former All-Star closer persevered and finished the Yankees’ 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

After retiring pinch-hitter Logan O’Hoppe on a foul popup with a runner on first to end it, Williams chose to see the cleaner side of another messy evening.

“I mean, at the end of the day, we won,” Williams said. “That’s all that matters.”

The Yankees acquired Williams from Milwaukee last winter to be a major component of their bullpen, but he’s still adjusting to the bright lights of Broadway. Williams had a handful of rocky outings in his first month, culminating on April 25 when he blew a save by giving up three runs in the ninth to Toronto at Yankee Stadium, his ERA ballooning to 11.25.

Williams lost his job as the Yankees’ closer after that, but he has found his form over the past three weeks, making eight consecutive scoreless appearances and allowing just three hits.

That gave manager Aaron Boone enough confidence to go to Williams at the Big A for his first save opportunity since late April — particularly because Luke Weaver had pitched in five of the previous seven games.

It didn’t seem like a high-leverage spot, either: The Yankees had a 3-0 lead, and the Angels hadn’t scored in 16 consecutive innings.

Williams repeatedly was one pitch away from another disaster in Anaheim, but Boone claimed to be satisfied by the result.

“Not worried about it,” Boone said. “In the end, you bend, don’t break. There’s a lot that you take away from that outing. But the reality is he’s throwing the ball really well. They put a couple of good swings on him tonight, but that’s part of it.”

Williams immediately gave up a leadoff homer to Yoán Moncada on a changeup that caught too much of the plate. Taylor Ward singled, Travis d’Arnaud hit a screaming 104.9-mph flyout to center, and Luis Rengifo singled to put runners on the corners with one out.

But Williams came through to earn his fifth save of the season.

After Ward scored when Jo Adell grounded into a forceout, Williams fell behind 3-0 to O’Hoppe. The promising catcher unexpectedly swung at a high fastball out of the strike zone and popped it into foul territory near the Angels’ dugout.

“I didn’t think he’d be swinging there, to be honest,” Williams said. “Kind of did me a favor.”

Williams is new to New York, but he knows all about the perils of his chosen profession. He ended his Brewers career by blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning of the decisive Game 3 in the NL wild-card series against the Mets — and then he was booed in the Bronx just 18 pitches into his Yankees career when he nearly blew a win on opening day.

“You just keep going,” Williams said. “The game isn’t over. We didn’t lose yet. It’s pretty simple.”

Williams’ ninth inning was a dramatic finish to an outstanding night for Carlos Rodón, who pitched seven scoreless innings of five-hit ball with 10 strikeouts and no walks. The Yankees issued no walks for the first time this season.

Williams’ struggles are a minor inconvenience in another strong start for the defending AL champions. New York (34-20) has won four straight and 15 of 19 with seven consecutive series victories, surging to a seven-game lead in the AL East in May for the first time since 1998.

“That’s a heck of a job by Devin to hang in,” Rodón said. “They made some good swings, and the ninth is a different animal. It’s really hard to get the last three outs of the game. I thought he hung in. I thought he did great and still shut (them) down and got the save.”

Chaos on the bases costs Juan Soto a hit in Mets’ win over White Sox

NEW YORK — Hits haven’t come easy for Juan Soto during his first season with the New York Mets.

The $765 million slugger lost one against the Chicago White Sox because of some chaos on the basepaths.

With teammate Brandon Nimmo on first in the opening inning, Soto sent a drive toward right-center, where a diving Michael A. Taylor trapped the ball in his glove off a short bounce.

Hearing disappointment from Citi Field fans, however, Nimmo thought the ball had been caught on a fly. So he scrambled back around second base and retreated quickly to first.

Soto saw Nimmo coming right at him between first and second and peeled off onto the infield grass as the White Sox threw the ball to first base.

When umpires sorted it all out, Nimmo was safe at first but Soto was called out for passing him on the basepaths. Chicago first baseman Miguel Vargas was credited with a putout.

“When Soto hit it, I thought, that’s down for sure. It’s a double or better. And so, went to go around the bag, had my back to the play, and then I heard the crowd act like the ball was caught. And so I turned around and went to go get back when I saw him on the ground, and tried to get back to first base,” Nimmo said. “It’s just one of those plays that’s kind of unfortunate.”

The safe signal indicating the ball hit the ground came from first base umpire Tom Hanahan — which Nimmo was in no position to see.

And he acknowledged he wasn’t really looking around for an umpire’s call anyway.

“I went with my first instinct as soon as I heard the crowd,” Nimmo said. “And I totally get it. I mean, it short-hopped into his glove. Honestly, if I was watching it I probably wouldn’t have even been sure what exactly to do.”

It was the latest bizarre sequence on the bases at Citi Field over the past five days.

Fortunately for the Mets, though, Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer — the first of five straight hits off starter Jonathan Cannon.

It would have been seven in a row if not for the mixup on the basepaths.

“As baserunners, like, that can be really confusing,” Alonso said. “I mean, I couldn’t tell from the on-deck circle and I probably would have done the same thing. Again, weird play, and when you’re in the heat of the moment, you’re not really looking at the umpire. You’re trying to just see the ball, and from my vantage point I thought he caught it.”

Two batters later, Jared Young launched another two-run homer that gave New York a 4-2 lead in a 6-4 victory.

“Glad that our offense came through and it ended up not being too big of a deal there at the end,” Nimmo said.

Soto could have used the base hit, however.

The four-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger winner finished 0 for 4 and is batting .228, which is 54 points below his career average.

“Screwy play. Probably not going to see another one like that this year,” Alonso said.

'Hard to envisage me not being back at Rangers' – Davis

Steven Davis playing for Rangers

Former Rangers midfielder Steven Davis says it is "hard to envisage himself not being back at the club in some capacity in the future" amid speculation linking him with a backroom role with the Scottish Premiership giants.

The 140-times capped Northern Ireland international has been mooted as part of a potential coaching ticket should former title-winning manager Steven Gerrard return for a second spell in charge of the club.

Gerrard has been one of a number of possible contenders linked with the vacancy at Rangers in recent weeks, although it is reported that Davide Ancelotti has held talks with the Ibrox club, with further discussions planned over the next few days.

Davis had two spells at the club as player, making a total of 239 appearances.

The 40-year-old was put in temporary control of first-team affairs following the departure of former manager Michael Beale in October 2023.

He was caretaker boss for two games, a Europa League defeat by Aris Limassol and a league win over St Mirren, before Philippe Clement was appointed to the position on a permanent basis.

"At this moment in time it's only rumours. I haven't heard anything else," said Davis of speculation linking him with a coaching role under a new Rangers boss.

"Obviously the club are going through the process in terms of who they are going to appoint as manager.

"If the opportunity comes up it's obviously a club that's obviously very close to my heart, so let's see what happens in the next few weeks."

Davis, currently part of Michael O'Neill's backroom team with Northern Ireland, would welcome a return to the club he holds in great affection at some stage.

"For me it's hard to envisage me not being back at the club in some capacity in the future whatever that may be, but you just don't know in football," he added in an interview with BBC Sport NI.

"You can't sort of plan that, you just have to wait for the opportunities and then once you have a decision to make then you make the decision.

"Ultimately I want Rangers to be successful, they had another difficult season, but hopefully they can get back to winning trophies next season."

Shohei Ohtani’s 20th homer of season places him in elite Dodgers company

CLEVELAND — Mishits by most players end up being outs.

For Shohei Ohtani, they can result in home runs.

The Japanese star became the third player in Dodgers history to reach 20 homers in the team’s first 55 games with a two-run towering drive during the fourth inning against the Cleveland Guardians.

The Japanese star joined Gil Hodges (21 in 1951) and Cody Bellinger (20 in 2019) as Dodgers with at least 20 homers in the first 55 games. It is the 64th time a player in the majors did it in the same span, the first since the New York Mets’ Pete Alonso in 2023.

“It’s really cool. A little bit jealousy probably. You know, he basically mishits a fly ball today and it still goes out,” said Max Muncy, who added a three-run homer in the Dodgers’ 9-5 victory. “It’s just one of those things where he does that stuff that no normal human beings can do. It’s really fun to watch and see it.”

Ohtani — a three-time MVP who leads the major leagues in homers — drove a cutter from Tanner Bibee into the left-field stands for a 4-0 lead. It was the fourth time this season Ohtani has gone deep to the opposite side.

“It wasn’t flushed, but it was spun the right way. It was just one of those balls that when he hit it, it just kept going like a helium ball,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “It is true that he has a lot more margin for error than everyone else on the planet. Maybe him and (New York Yankees slugger Aaron) Judge.”

Bibee struck out Ohtani in the first inning and issued an intentional walk in the second. The right-hander thought he got out of the fourth inning when he saw Ohtani hit it, only to see it keep carrying.

“I think a lot of people thought it was a popup. I mean, I did too. It was definitely crazy seeing that go up,” Bibee said.

It was the second time this season and 10th since Ohtani came to the majors from Japan for the 2018 season he has homered in three straight games. That also includes a stretch of eight in the last 13 games.

The fastest Ohtani had gone deep 20 times in a season prior was 70 games into the Angels’ season in 2021.

It is the third time the four-time All-Star has had at least 12 homers in a month since joining the Dodgers. He did it in June and August last season.

The most homers Ohtani has hit in a month was 15 with the Los Angeles Angels in June 2023.

Of Ohtani’s 245 big league homers, 37 have gone to left field.

“He’s just been much more disciplined in the strike zone,” Roberts said. “He’s swinging at his strikes and he’s taking balls that are not in the hitting zone. And I think that if you look at that stretch, he’s walking a lot more too. When he’s willing to take the walk and be ready to hit the balls in his hitting zone, that’s where you see kind of the slug and when he gets on a tear.”

Del Toro breaks from Bardet and Carapaz to win stage 17 and extend Giro d’Italia lead

  • ‘Today I realised that I will never give up’

  • Perfectly timed sprint follows two difficult climbs

Isaac del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG maintained his excellent form at the Giro d’Italia to win stage 17 with a perfectly timed sprint on Wednesday, the Mexican’s first stage victory helping him to extend his lead in the overall standings.

The 155km route from San Michele all’Adige to Bormio was less punishing than Tuesday’s stage 16, but featured two difficult climbs at Passo del Tonale and Passo del Mortirolo, with 3,800 metres of elevation.

Here's when Kristian Campbell will make first career start at 1B

Here's when Kristian Campbell will make first career start at 1B originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The Boston Red Sox are ready to get creative with their infield defense in the wake of first baseman Triston Casas’ season-ending injury.

Kristian Campbell is set to make his first career start at first base this weekend when the Red Sox visit the Atlanta Braves, manager Alex Cora confirmed Wednesday. The rookie second baseman has spent the last two weeks learning to play the position.

Romy Gonzalez, Abraham Toro, and Nick Sogard have split time at first base since Casas’ injury. Gonzalez was placed on the injured list with a quad contusion less than a week after Casas went down, leaving Boston even more short-handed.

Campbell has showcased his versatility by playing the outfield in addition to second base, but the 22-year-old has never played first in his professional career. Nonetheless, after watching Campbell work out at first over the last two weeks, Cora believes he’s ready to try it out in a game.

“He’s (improved),” Cora said of Campbell before Wednesday’s series finale in Milwaukee. “We talked a few days ago and he said, ‘I feel confident.’ I went out there twice and the way he moves, he’s going to make the routine plays. We’re going to see mistakes — where you have to go on the relays and stuff like that.”

“But we’ll probably have someone in the dugout being on top of him the whole game and (Campbell) pays attention to him. Having someone (guiding) him the whole game, from the dugout. ‘Make sure you’re doing this,’ and that. We’ll walk him through it.”

For now, moving Campbell to first base is more of an experiment than a long-term solution. Cora noted that Campbell will be used at first “little by little” until he is more comfortable with the position.

It’s a challenging time for Campbell, who has struggled mightily at the plate while learning to play first base. After a red-hot start to his MLB career, he has cooled off considerably with a .120 batting average and .325 OPS so far in May.

It’s unclear which game Campbell will play first base in Atlanta. The three-game series begins Friday night, with Games 2 and 3 scheduled for Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

NHL Rumor Roundup: Sam Bennett's Stock Rises

Florida Panthers center Sam Bennett is completing a four-year, $17.7-million contract.

Eligible for UFA status on July 1, the 28-year-old couldn't have picked a better time for a career season.

Bennett is coming off a career-best 51-point regular season. The versatile, agitating two-way center is also burnishing his reputation as a clutch post-season performer. He's tied with Mikko Rantanen for the lead among playoff goal-scorers with nine, putting himself among the favorites for the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Panthers management reportedly reopened contract extension talks with Bennett in March. He could be receptive to staying put, but could seek to double his current $4.425 million average annual value on his next contract. That could make him too expensive for the Panthers to retain.

Sam Bennett (Sam Navarro-Imagn Images)

Bennett would be the best center available if he tests the UFA market, where several clubs will bid for his services.

The Toronto Maple Leafs might be among his suitors. Michael Traikos recently observed that the Leafs will have over $22 million in cap space if they don't re-sign pending UFA forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares. He recommends they use that cap space to pursue Bennett if he goes to market on July 1, a sentiment shared by Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun

Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic believes Bennett would be the best UFA option for the St. Louis Blues to address their need for a second-line center.  However, the cap-strapped Blues might have to free up some salary, perhaps by placing defenseman Torey Krug on LTIR if his playing days are over.

Rutherford's colleague Kevin Kurz suggested Bennett would make a good free-agent target for the rebuilding Philadelphia Flyers. Bolstering their depth at center is a priority this summer, which could lead them to free agency if suitable options aren't available in the trade market. With $26.7 million in projected cap room for 2025-26, they can afford Bennett if he's available on July 1.

Bennett could also be on the Montreal Canadiens' radar. Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazetterecently included the Panthers' star among several UFA options to address the Canadiens' need for a second-line center.

Expert picks & predictions for Thursday’s Pacers vs. Knicks game

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes Jalen Brunson to go for 30-plus points:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Jalen Brunson is 3-1 to the Over 29.5 and 30.5 points prop in this series and in a win-or-go-home, I think there is another opportunity for an Over here.

At home, Brunson scored 43 and 36 points in this series before falling to 23 and 31 in Games 3 and 4 at Indiana. New York will only go as Brunson goes and 25-plus field goal attempts seems likely once again, so give me his Over 29.5 points (-115) out to 30.5."

A London club winning Super League? That’s the vision for the new Broncos

London Broncos are penniless and on their way to the third tier but the man who ran Leeds Rhinos has a rescue plan

By No Helmets Required

When the most successful rugby league administrator in the country takes over one of its biggest underachievers and promptly gets the backing of major players in the Australian sports market, it’s worth listening to his plans. Last week Gary Hetherington, who spent 29 years as chief executive of Leeds Rhinos, invited politicians, coaches, fans and players to the Australian High Commission to hear what he has in store for London Broncos. And he wants them all on board.
