Astros' Ronel Blanco is set for season-ending Tommy John surgery

HOUSTON — Houston right-hander Ronel Blanco will have season-ending Tommy John surgery.

The team made the announcement after Blanco received a second opinion. He was placed on the injured list with inflammation in his throwing elbow, a few days after his last start on May 17.

“I know how hard he’s worked to get to this point and it stinks,” manager Joe Espada said. “So the goal is now to get him healthy, get him back at some point next season.”

Blanco is the second Astros starter to have to undergo Tommy John surgery after they announced on May 18 that right-hander Hayden Wesneski would need it.

Espada said it’s a trying time for his team, which also is without right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, who has been out since April after breaking his right thumb in a batting practice mishap. They also are missing right-handers Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier, who are both still recovering from Tommy John surgery.

“It’s very, very hard,” Espada said. “We went through it last year. But as a team and as a leader of this team, I got to keep these guys focused on the goal ... and this news means we gotta pick each other up and we’ve gotta find someone else. Somebody will come up and step up and pick these innings up.”

The 31-year-old Blanco was 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA in nine starts this season.

Trouble finds ex-NBA star Shawn Kemp once again, and he may serve time for it

FILE - Former Seattle SuperSonics forward Shawn Kemp, center, attends a WNBA basketball game between the Seattle Storm and the Chicago Sky on May 18, 2022, in Seattle. Prosecutors in Washington state charged Kemp on Friday, April 14, 2023, with first-degree assault in a parking lot shooting last month over a stolen cell phone, noting that in a text message just before the shooting, Kemp wrote, "I'm about to shoot this (expletive)." Shawn Kemp's name has long been synonymous with prodigious talent, a ton of trouble and wasted opportunity.

Now he'll likely also be known for a jail sentence.

Kemp, 55, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault Tuesday for shooting at two men inside a vehicle in a Tacoma, Wash., mall parking lot. The plea was part of an agreement in Pierce County Superior Court in which prosecutors will recommend nine months of confinement in the county jail when Kemp is sentenced in August.

Kemp was initially charged with one count of first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement after the March 2003 shooting, and prosecutors last week added another count of assault as well as a drive-by shooting charge. No one was hurt, but the Toyota 4Runner the men were inside and another vehicle were damaged.

Kemp contended in a court filing that he fired in self-defense after one of the men shot at him. The 4Runner drove off before Tacoma police arrived, and and an empty holster was found inside the vehicle when it was discovered abandoned days later.

“Shawn is committed to moving forward in a positive direction,” Kemp’s attorney Tim Leary told the Seattle Times. “He was presented with an offer from the state that allows him to take responsibility, but I think also recognizes the self-defense nature of how this transpired.”

Kemp famously battled cocaine addiction and fathered at least seven children with six different women during a 15-year NBA career that began when he was 19 years old in 1989.

Kemp was arrested in 2006 for drug possession in Washington after he was found with cocaine, marijuana, and a pistol.

Growth has been halting, however, even for someone who sprouted 13 inches between the ninth and 11th grades, topping out at 6-foot-10. His weight ballooned during his career from 230 pounds to more than 300, yet he remained capable of dominating on the court.

That was long ago, though. And on Tuesday in court, his attorney explained that Kemp's truck was broken into on March 8, 2023, when he and other employees who worked at his marijuana dispensary, Kemp's Cannabis, were attending a concert in Seattle.

According to court documents, Kemp's cellphone and game-worn Kemp and Gary Payton jerseys were among the items stolen. Kemp used a phone tracking app to look for the thieves, and confronted the driver of the 4Runner in a Tacoma mall parking lot.

A man in the back seat shot at Kemp with a handgun, according to the filing, and Kemp returned fire. The 4Runner fled, and when the vehicle was found abandoned days later, an empty holster was found inside but there was no gun, documents said.

As part of his plea, Kemp cannot possess a firearm. In addition to the proposed nine-month sentence, Kemp will spend one year in community custody and pay restitution.

“His plan is to tell the community about the dangers of gun violence, really to be a positive influence on youth,” Aaron Kiviat, another of Kemp’s attorneys, told the Seattle Times.

In a statement outlining the plea agreement, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Howe said that the case should be resolved ahead of trial because the two alleged victims were illegally in possession of Kemp’s belongings.

Both alleged victims are currently serving prison sentences in other cases. One is serving a seven-year sentence, in part for a July 2023 shooting in which he mistook the victim for Kemp. The same man recently filed a civil suit against Kemp stemming from the mall shooting.

Nicknamed the "Reign Man," Kemp made $91,572,963 during his 15-year NBA career that ended in 2004. He was a six-time All-Star and helped the Seattle SuperSonics to the NBA finals in 1996 when he averaged a career-high 21.2 points a game. Kemp also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers and Orlando Magic.

Kemp reflected on the ups and downs of his career on the All the Smoke podcast with former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, saying, "Going through some problems and stuff that I went through in my career also hurts you at the end. But I think when you look at the good side of it, and you compare the numbers and stuff, I'm right there with some of the best ones."

Ottawa Senators Open To Re-Signing Adam Gaudette – But At What Cost?

Adam Gaudette's 2024–25 season will go down as one of the more pleasant surprises in recent Ottawa Senators history.

Here was a guy who was basically out of the NHL for the past two seasons, signing a two-way contract with the Senators for $775,000 — the league's version of minimum wage. Not only did he make the team, the most competitive Senators squad in eight years, but he also finished 6th in team goal scoring with 19.

Today, as a 28-year-old unrestricted free agent, who has never signed the kind of lucrative NHL contract that will put him and his family on Easy Street after hockey, it will be tempting for Gaudette and his agent to hit the open auction and listen to offers on July 1st. No, it won't be a feeding frenzy, but he did prove this season that there is value there.

Even on his own team, there were players like Claude Giroux and Dylan Cozens who combined for $13.6 million in salary this season, and neither of those players matched Gaudette's 19 goals, even with their superior quality of ice time and linemates. Gaudette didn't wilt in the playoffs either, finishing fifth on the team with a goal and 3 points in 6 games. His takeaway and shorthanded assist on Cozens' huge goal in Game 5 in Toronto deserved a chef's kiss.

When asked about his NHL stock at season's end, Gaudette was confident in his answer.

"Yeah, I think the stock has definitely risen," Gaudette said. "And that was a personal goal of mine is proving that I'm an everyday NHL player and finally getting over that hump of, 'Is he an AHL player or an NHL player?' And I had certain goals for personal goals that I set for myself when I signed here, and I pretty much nailed every one."

All things being equal, the Senators would love to roll it back this fall with Gaudette as their fourth-line center, a player who can move up the roster if others fall into slumps or injury trouble.

But at what cost?

Gaudette won't forego the open auction of free agency if the Sens throw minimum wage at him again. So what will it take? When does it stop making sense? $1.25 million? Two years? Three years?

After that, you have to start looking at the unpleasantness of replaceability, or the possible downsides of rolling things back. Gaudette's offensive stats in the second half of the season fell noticeably, so maybe his first half was an anomaly? What about his skating? He's not really an elite skater. You get the idea.

NHL Draft Watch: Ottawa Senators Hope To Deal Themselves Another Winner At 21NHL Draft Watch: Ottawa Senators Hope To Deal Themselves Another Winner At 21So far, here in the roaring 20s, the Ottawa Senators' first-round picks at the NHL Draft have been all or nothing. They’ve either landed in the top 10 or haven’t had a first-round pick at all.

It's clear that Gaudette is wide open to re-signing. He and his wife just had a baby earlier this month, so they're probably in the mode of setting down roots. He likes Ottawa, he likes his teammates, and he has a head coach in Travis Green who likes and trusts him as a player, going back to their Vancouver days together.

Gaudette was asked at the year-ender if there have been any contract talks and didn't confirm one way or the other.

"I think they've got some things to figure out over the next few weeks, and after they talk as a staff, they hopefully come back and get something that works for everyone."

That would be nice. But in a cap world where the stars get all the money, the Sens have to be smart with their investments in role players.

Inside Coverage: Are the Steelers a playoff team with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback?

(This article was written with the assistance of Castmagic, an AI tool, and reviewed by our editorial team to ensure accuracy. Please reach out to us if you notice any mistakes.)

It remains the biggest question in this NFL offseason: Will Aaron Rodgers play quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers this upcoming season?

That's yet to be answered, but let's dive a little deeper. In the latest episode of the Inside Coverage podcast, Frank Schwab, Charles Robinson and Jason Fitz debate this question: Are the Steelers a playoff team with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback?

"No, no. I think that they got kind of lucky to get in the playoffs last year," Schwab explains. "And this whole [Mike] Tomlin thing is very, very — it's impressive, but they're barely squeaking in. I think they're clearly the third-best team in the division. The AFC as a whole is pretty tough when you start looking at the AFC West. And I just — no, no, I don't think the Steelers are a playoff team regardless."

He does leave room for being proven wrong, saying, "Mike Tomlin has proved me wrong a few times in the past few years here."

"I'm going to go the opposite way, I think only because this is how the universe works. This is such a crap show — everything screams it's going to break, right? Because this is how the universe usually works, it's gonna be the opposite. I think it's gonna be Brett Favre, Minnesota."

Robinson predicts the Steelers will go 11-6, be "exciting and fun and a huge story all year long," with an unexpected late-career resurgence for Rodgers.

"If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, you're allowing yourself to be hamstrung to sign a quarterback that I think, at best, if he comes out and has the best that he can be today, he's the third-best quarterback in his own division today. We are talking about this version of Aaron Rodgers like he's an MVP and this version of Aaron Rodgers isn't."

Fitz seems doubtful that Rodgers can elevate the Steelers into playoff contention, equating him to current-level Kirk Cousins or Mason Rudolph.

Rumor: LeBron James likely to opt into $52.6 million with Lakers, play at least one more season

The Lakers still need LeBron James if they plan to contend next season. The path to a Luka Doncic-centric future can be seen, but this current roster isn't a threat to be playing in late May and June next season without LeBron, who is coming off an All-NBA season in which he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. All that in his 22nd NBA season at age 40.

While he and his agent say no decision has been made about next season, the league-wide expectation is that LeBron will be back with the Lakers. Shams Charania of ESPN went a step further on the “The Pat McAfee Show" saying he expects LeBron to opt into his $52.6 million contract for next season.

"I'm told he's likely to opt in. He's got a player option of about $54 million, a massive player option. That's likely. That's the plan. But again, his option date is June 29. So he still has about a month to figure it out. He still has to have some hard conversations that are gonna happen between him and the Lakers to see what this team looks like. Because listen, LeBron James, whether he plays one more season or a few more seasons, he wants to be in a competitive environment. And I said it when I came on when their season ended, he's probably gonna opt in because the option is so big and then that gives you flexibility to figure out, do you extend off that number, or this is the final year if this is the last hurrah essentially. Year 23 for No. 23, they have All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles. So to me, it's very storybook if that's the way it goes. But, that's a decision that he's gotta make."

The most likely scenario is that LeBron opts in and receives a one- or two-year extension off that deal, all of which are player options. The Lakers will give him whatever he wants.

When it comes to stepping away from the game, LeBron is not going to pull a Tim Duncan and retire in a July press release. LeBron is going to make sure his fans know and get a chance to see him one last time. It will be a celebration during his final season. As Charania noted, there is a symmetry to him retiring after next season — 23 seasons, the All-Star Game in Los Angeles — but he's still playing at a top-10 level in the league, so there is no pressure on him to step away.

Whatever LeBron decides, we will find out by the end of June, and then Rob Pelinka and the Lakers front office can go about finding a defensive-minded, vertical-spacing center and some wing depth to give this team a chance.

Christian Yelich’s walk-off grand slam could be a sign that his slow start is coming to an end

MILWAUKEE — Christian Yelich is starting to find his groove this season.

Yelich hit the first walk-off grand slam of his career, going deep in the 10th inning to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.

“Yeah, it took me quite a while to check off walk-off homer, so it was pretty cool,” said Yelich, who is in his 13th season, including the last eight with the Brewers. “You know, walk-off homer, you’re winning the game either way, but grand slams are always cool.”

Yelich jumped on a 1-1 slider from Liam Hendriks and sent it 108.5 mph and approximately 400 feet over the wall in right center as Milwaukee won its third straight and for the fourth time in six games.

“I was trying to just pick one out that I felt like I could handle,” the 33-year-old Yelich said. “I was just trying to hit a flyball the outfield, honestly.”

It was the sixth grand slam of Yelich’s career, and second this season. His last was at San Francisco on April 22nd.

He went 2 for 5 with a home run, a double, four RBIs, two runs scored and one stolen base against Boston.

The left-handed hitting Yelich came into the game batting .205 with a team-leading 30 RBIs and nine home runs.

“As a lefty, you’re just sticking your nose in there and try to make something happen,” he said. “You know, single, walk, you know, anything.”

Mets get power boost from journeyman Jared Young after his stint in South Korea

NEW YORK — After hitting a two-run shot for the New York Mets, Jared Young was reminded it was his first major league homer in 613 days.

“Felt that long, yeah,” he said. “It’s the best league in the world, so you’ve got to play your best to be here and have success here. But I’m glad to be back, and that one felt good.”

Called up from the minors after spending part of last season in South Korea, the 29-year-old from Canada helped power the Mets to a 6-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Young gave New York a 4-2 lead in the first inning with a drive over the right-field fence that marked his third career longball and first in the big leagues since Sept. 22, 2023, for the Chicago Cubs against Colorado.

He also delivered a well-struck double to right-center that set up Jeff McNeil’s sacrifice fly in the third, giving Young multiple extra-base hits for the first time in his 26 major league games.

“He looked great. He’s been having really good at-bats and I felt like tonight you really got to see what he’s able to do,” said Mets slugger Pete Alonso, who launched a two-run homer of his own two batters before Young connected.

“He’s a great guy to have. Not only is he a great performer but I mean, the couple days that he’s been here, he’s been a really good teammate. So, he’s been a treat to have so far.”

With designated hitter Jesse Winker (also a left-handed batter) on the injured list, the Mets brought up Young from Triple-A Syracuse to face a string of right-handed starters over the past few days.

He’s started four games in a row and impressed manager Carlos Mendoza with the way he controls the strike zone — but Young’s home run was his first hit for New York.

“Look, he’s getting an opportunity,” Mendoza said. “He’s back in the big leagues after a lot of grinding. Whether it’s minor leagues, up and down, going overseas, he’s getting an opportunity back here in the States, and here we are giving him a chance and he’s taking advantage of it. Like I said, I like the at-bats and it was good to see him get some results today.”

Young played at small schools in Oklahoma (Connors State College) and North Dakota (Minot State University) before getting selected by the Cubs in the 15th round of the 2017 amateur draft from Old Dominion in Virginia.

He made his major league debut with Chicago in September 2022 and got 47 plate appearances in 2023. Young was then claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals and played 74 games at Triple-A Memphis last year before getting released on July 30.

So he signed with the Doosan Bears in South Korea and batted .326 with 10 homers and 39 RBIs over 38 games in the KBO — where he was teammates with Mets left-hander Brandon Waddell, another international success story.

New York signed Young last December and sent him to Syracuse, where he began the season on the injured list.

But once he got healthy, he pounded Triple-A pitching, batting .259 with a .393 on-base percentage and .533 slugging percentage. He had five homers, five doubles, 21 RBIs and 12 walks in 22 games before being called up.

“You believe in yourself and you believe in the player that you are, I feel like it takes care of a lot of things,” Young said. “There’s going to be a lot of ups and downs in kind of any career — I don’t care if it’s playing baseball, or doing anything. But I think when you believe in yourself you can get to where you want to get.”

Asked how he’s been feeling at the plate in the majors, Young said: “Pretty comfortable.”

“Trying to keep things as similar as possible to all the baseball you’ve played, whether in the minors or the big leagues, wherever you are,” he explained. “You know, just put good at-bats and be a tough out.”

He certainly was, hitting sixth in a dangerous Mets lineup that features some of baseball’s biggest stars in Alonso, Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor.

“It’s awesome. It’s great,” Young said. “You take a look at this team from the top down, I mean, pretty good ballplayers and winning a lot of games. So, to get thrown into it, I feel like I belong and I feel like it’s a good spot and a good fit, and hope we can just keep winning some ballgames.”

Former Duck Brings Oilers One Step Closer to Stanley Cup Final

Since being bought out by the Ducks in June 2019, Corey Perry has been to five of the last six Stanley Cup Finals with the Montréal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning and Edmonton Oilers. He is one Oilers win away from being in six of the last seven.

The Oilers have lost just twice in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs after going down 2-0 to the Los Angeles Kings in the first round. After winning four straight against the Kings, they easily dispatched the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. A series-opening loss to the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final has become merely a blip as the Oilers have rattled off three consecutive wins, with Perry scoring the game-winning tally in Game 4 on the power play.

Per NHL Public Relations, Perry’s goal, his sixth of the playoffs, is tied for the most by a player age 39 or older in a single postseason, matching Teemu Selanne (6 in 2011 with Anaheim), Mark Recchi (6 in 2010 with Boston), Ron Francis (6 in 2002 with Carolina) and Jean Béliveau (6 in 1971 with Montréal). Perry also became the fifth active player to score 60 career playoff goals, joining AlexOvechkin (77), Sidney Crosby (71), Evgeni Malkin (67) and Brad Marchand (60).

“We found a way after (Dallas tied it) to put one over the line and the power play came through tonight,” Perry said to reporters after the game.

Perry, who turned 40 a little under two weeks ago, isn’t just a long for the ride either. He’s been a valuable contributor, doubling his points total from last year’s run and tying his points total from his two previous postseason performances. Most of his ice time in this season’s playoffs has come alongside Leon Draisaitl and Oilers captain Connor McDavid. Unsurprisingly, the dynamic duo plus Perry are outshooting and outscoring opponents by a wide margin at 5-on-5.

He’s been a staple on the power play as well, pitching his tent in the five-foot area around the crease and doing his best to cause havoc for the opposing goaltender. Both of Perry’s points in the Game 4 win came on the power play.

It’s been 18 years since Perry lifted the Stanley Cup for the first (and only) time in celebration. He’s come agonizingly close to doing so on several occasions in the years since. The Oilers are looking to ensure he’ll have another chance to raise Lord Stanley once again.

Devin Williams has another rocky 9th inning for the Yankees, but the embattled reliever hangs on

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Devin Williams’ first two months with the New York Yankees have been a roller coaster ride, and his first save in nearly six weeks was full of even more thrills and chills.

Williams gave up two runs and three hits in the ninth inning, but the former All-Star closer persevered and finished the Yankees’ 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

After retiring pinch-hitter Logan O’Hoppe on a foul popup with a runner on first to end it, Williams chose to see the cleaner side of another messy evening.

“I mean, at the end of the day, we won,” Williams said. “That’s all that matters.”

The Yankees acquired Williams from Milwaukee last winter to be a major component of their bullpen, but he’s still adjusting to the bright lights of Broadway. Williams had a handful of rocky outings in his first month, culminating on April 25 when he blew a save by giving up three runs in the ninth to Toronto at Yankee Stadium, his ERA ballooning to 11.25.

Williams lost his job as the Yankees’ closer after that, but he has found his form over the past three weeks, making eight consecutive scoreless appearances and allowing just three hits.

That gave manager Aaron Boone enough confidence to go to Williams at the Big A for his first save opportunity since late April — particularly because Luke Weaver had pitched in five of the previous seven games.

It didn’t seem like a high-leverage spot, either: The Yankees had a 3-0 lead, and the Angels hadn’t scored in 16 consecutive innings.

Williams repeatedly was one pitch away from another disaster in Anaheim, but Boone claimed to be satisfied by the result.

“Not worried about it,” Boone said. “In the end, you bend, don’t break. There’s a lot that you take away from that outing. But the reality is he’s throwing the ball really well. They put a couple of good swings on him tonight, but that’s part of it.”

Williams immediately gave up a leadoff homer to Yoán Moncada on a changeup that caught too much of the plate. Taylor Ward singled, Travis d’Arnaud hit a screaming 104.9-mph flyout to center, and Luis Rengifo singled to put runners on the corners with one out.

But Williams came through to earn his fifth save of the season.

After Ward scored when Jo Adell grounded into a forceout, Williams fell behind 3-0 to O’Hoppe. The promising catcher unexpectedly swung at a high fastball out of the strike zone and popped it into foul territory near the Angels’ dugout.

“I didn’t think he’d be swinging there, to be honest,” Williams said. “Kind of did me a favor.”

Williams is new to New York, but he knows all about the perils of his chosen profession. He ended his Brewers career by blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning of the decisive Game 3 in the NL wild-card series against the Mets — and then he was booed in the Bronx just 18 pitches into his Yankees career when he nearly blew a win on opening day.

“You just keep going,” Williams said. “The game isn’t over. We didn’t lose yet. It’s pretty simple.”

Williams’ ninth inning was a dramatic finish to an outstanding night for Carlos Rodón, who pitched seven scoreless innings of five-hit ball with 10 strikeouts and no walks. The Yankees issued no walks for the first time this season.

Williams’ struggles are a minor inconvenience in another strong start for the defending AL champions. New York (34-20) has won four straight and 15 of 19 with seven consecutive series victories, surging to a seven-game lead in the AL East in May for the first time since 1998.

“That’s a heck of a job by Devin to hang in,” Rodón said. “They made some good swings, and the ninth is a different animal. It’s really hard to get the last three outs of the game. I thought he hung in. I thought he did great and still shut (them) down and got the save.”

Chaos on the bases costs Juan Soto a hit in Mets’ win over White Sox

NEW YORK — Hits haven’t come easy for Juan Soto during his first season with the New York Mets.

The $765 million slugger lost one against the Chicago White Sox because of some chaos on the basepaths.

With teammate Brandon Nimmo on first in the opening inning, Soto sent a drive toward right-center, where a diving Michael A. Taylor trapped the ball in his glove off a short bounce.

Hearing disappointment from Citi Field fans, however, Nimmo thought the ball had been caught on a fly. So he scrambled back around second base and retreated quickly to first.

Soto saw Nimmo coming right at him between first and second and peeled off onto the infield grass as the White Sox threw the ball to first base.

When umpires sorted it all out, Nimmo was safe at first but Soto was called out for passing him on the basepaths. Chicago first baseman Miguel Vargas was credited with a putout.

“When Soto hit it, I thought, that’s down for sure. It’s a double or better. And so, went to go around the bag, had my back to the play, and then I heard the crowd act like the ball was caught. And so I turned around and went to go get back when I saw him on the ground, and tried to get back to first base,” Nimmo said. “It’s just one of those plays that’s kind of unfortunate.”

The safe signal indicating the ball hit the ground came from first base umpire Tom Hanahan — which Nimmo was in no position to see.

And he acknowledged he wasn’t really looking around for an umpire’s call anyway.

“I went with my first instinct as soon as I heard the crowd,” Nimmo said. “And I totally get it. I mean, it short-hopped into his glove. Honestly, if I was watching it I probably wouldn’t have even been sure what exactly to do.”

It was the latest bizarre sequence on the bases at Citi Field over the past five days.

Fortunately for the Mets, though, Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer — the first of five straight hits off starter Jonathan Cannon.

It would have been seven in a row if not for the mixup on the basepaths.

“As baserunners, like, that can be really confusing,” Alonso said. “I mean, I couldn’t tell from the on-deck circle and I probably would have done the same thing. Again, weird play, and when you’re in the heat of the moment, you’re not really looking at the umpire. You’re trying to just see the ball, and from my vantage point I thought he caught it.”

Two batters later, Jared Young launched another two-run homer that gave New York a 4-2 lead in a 6-4 victory.

“Glad that our offense came through and it ended up not being too big of a deal there at the end,” Nimmo said.

Soto could have used the base hit, however.

The four-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger winner finished 0 for 4 and is batting .228, which is 54 points below his career average.

“Screwy play. Probably not going to see another one like that this year,” Alonso said.
