‘Celtics City' beyond the episode: C's-Lakers rivalry reaches its peak
‘Celtics City' beyond the episode: C's-Lakers rivalry reaches its peak originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers play in opposite conferences on opposite sides of the country. So, why is Celtics-Lakers considered one of the best rivalries in sports?
Episode 5 of Max’s “Celtics City” docuseries provides plenty of evidence.
Titled, “F**k the Celtics,” this episode documents of the height of the C’s-Lakers rivalry during the 1980s, when both teams were vying for NBA supremacy. The two teams combined to win eight championships during that 10-year span (Boston in 1981, 1984 and 1986; Los Angeles in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988), with only the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers and the 1989 Detroit Pistons breaking up the back-and-forth.
The Celtics and Lakers went head-to-head in the NBA Finals three times during the decade, with the C’s winning in 1984 and the Lakers prevailing in 1985 and 1987.

- Episode 1: “Founding Fathers”
- Episode 2: “No Final Victories”
- Episode 3: “All Swept Up”
- Episode 4: “Great Hope. Period.”
While Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were the stars of the rivalry, the competitive fire between Boston and Los Angeles went well beyond the former college nemeses.
“I thought the star of this episode in a lot of ways was (Lakers forward James) Worthy. ‘F— the Celtics,’ he’s the one who said that,” longtime NBA reporter Jackie MacMullan said on NBC Sports Boston’s Keys to the City show recapping Episode 5, as seen in the video player above.
“His perspective is so interesting, because we get so caught up in Magic and Larry, and you know, there were a lot of other big players.”
“I liked the tension that you could see in this episode between the Celtics and Lakers, which we know existed, because we covered them — we saw it with our own two eyes,” MacMullan added.
“Watching them reflect back on the animosity — it was very real.”

Relive Johnny Most’s call of Gerald Henderson’s steal at the end of regulation in Game 2 of the 1984 NBA Finals. Henderson’s heroics helped force overtime, where the Celtics emerged with a 124-121 win.
Cedric Maxwell reflects on his famous, “Get on my back, boys!” quote before Game 7 of the 1984 Finals. Maxwell scored 24 points to lead the Celtics to victory and earned NBA Finals MVP honors.
From NBC Sports Boston’s documentary “The ’86 Celtics,” we go behind why the Celtics traded Finals MVP Cedric Maxwell for oft-injured big man Bill Walton prior to the 1985-86 season.

Trae Young is named assistant general manager for Oklahoma men’s basketball
NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma has hired former Sooners player and Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young as assistant general manager for men’s basketball.
He also has pledged to donate $1 million to the program, the school announced.
Young, a four-time NBA All-Star, was an All-American for Oklahoma in 2017-18, his only season with the Sooners. He became the first player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in points per game (27.4) and assists per game (8.7). He was drafted No. 5 overall.
The 26-year-old Norman North High School graduate for years has worn his love for the city on his sleeve.
“As someone who grew up in Norman and played at the University of Oklahoma, stepping into the role of assistant GM for OU Basketball is a huge honor,” Young said in a statement. “This program has such a rich history, which I am fortunate to have been and continue to be a part of. In my new role, my focus is on helping contribute to OU’s winning culture, working alongside the coaching staff and front office to bring in the right players to help us compete and succeed at the highest level.”
Young will assist with the evaluation of high school and transfer portal prospects, help negotiate player contracts and guide players in building their brands.
“Trae is a son of Norman, Oklahoma, and he’s given so much to our city and its people,” Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said. “He has a strong affinity for this place and his commitment to ensuring our community is a thriving one is truly unmatched. He’s also an OU legend who, in his time here and since, continues to achieve excellence both on and off the court.”
Young joins Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry in taking on an administrative role at his alma mater in this new era of college sports. Curry was named assistant GM at Davidson.
Golden Knights Looking To Clinch A Playoff Spot With Win Against The Oiler
The Vegas Golden Knights could clinch a playoff spot tonight if they can beat the Edmonton Oilers tonight.
Despite not playing on Monday, the Golden Knights could have clinched their seventh playoff berth in eight years. If the Calgary Flames lost in regulation to the Colorado Avalanche the Golden Knights would have earned a spot in the postseason, but a two-goal comeback in the third and a shootout win put a halt on those celebrations.
The Golden Knights now have the opportunity to control their fate and with a win over the Oilers, they'll bring themselves a step closer to locking up their desired regular season achievements.
If the Golden Knights lose in regulation and the Flames also lose in regulation to Utah HC, the Golden Knights will clinch a playoff spot.
The Oilers are attempting to hunt down the Golden Knights for the Pacific Division lead, but a six-game win streak by the Golden Knights has created some much-needed separation.
The Oilers remain without Connor McDavid but recently reinstated Leon Draisaitl back into their lineup. In his return on Saturday, Drasaitl recorded two goals and three points, picking up points on all three goals and scoring the overtime winner.
Slowing him down will be a difficult task but it's a matchup that Jack Eichel seems to relish in. His game elevates whenever he's matched up against another superstar and his history against the Oilers is quite good. In 19 games against the Oilers, the 28-year-old has scored eight goals and 21 points.
The Oilers are ravaged by injuries at the moment, currently without McDavid, Mattias Ekholm, Stuart Skinner, Trent Frederic and Evander Kane, but the Golden Knights too are dealing with several injuries. They'll be without Tomas Hertl, Ilya Samsonov and likely Alex Pietrangelo.
It's a vital game for the Golden Knights as they continue to gear up for the playoffs.

Ovechkin Could Break Goals Record Against Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks face off against the Washington Capitals on Friday, April 4 with Alex Ovechkin hot on the heels of Wayne Gretzky's goal record.
While the Blackhawks only have one game before playing the Capitals, Washington plays twice ahead of hosting the Blackhawks. It seems like the likeliest time that the soon-to-be all-time goal scorer in the NHL is going to break Gretzky's record.
Ovechkin is just four goals away from tying the record as he sits at 890 goals. The Capitals play the Boston Bruins, who are on the verge of falling into last place in the Eastern Conference, and the Carolina Hurricanes. The Capitals' captain doesn't have to get four goals in the next two games to be able to break the record at home against the Blackhawks. Chicago isn't a good team and has allowed the third-most goals against this season.
Ovechkin just has to be within range, whether that means scoring 2-3 goals in his next two games and then lighting up the Blackhawks, it can be done. The team that it would be the most special against is the Pittsburgh Penguins though. The Capitals and Penguins face off in the last game of the season in Pittsburgh.

Yankees sign Adam Ottavino to major league deal, place Devin Williams on paternity list
The Yankees are making a depth addition to their bullpen, adding Adam Ottavino on a big league deal.
Ottavino, who was released by the Red Sox last week after failing to make the team out of camp, was added to the active roster ahead of Tuesday night's series opener with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He takes the roster spot of closer Devin Williams, who was placed on the paternity list.
To make room for Ottavino on the 40-man roster, the Yanks have transferred right-hander JT Brubaker to the 60-day IL.
The 39-year-old Ottavino is coming off a season in which he ultimately found himself in more of a mop-up role down the stretch -- pitching to a 4.34 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 60 appearances.
He played Winter Ball this offseason with hopes of finding more success after working through some flaws in his mechanics and tinkering with his pitch mix, but was knocked around in five spring appearances with Boston.
Ottavino will now look to carve out a role back in the Bronx, where he posted a career-best 1.90 ERA back in 2019.
Brubaker is expected to miss significant time, as he is yet to begin a throwing program after suffering three broken ribs on his left side attempting to avoid a comebacker during a spring training game.

Expert picks & predictions for Tuesday’s Trail Blazers vs. Hawks game
NBC Sports Bet Best Bet
Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Under:
"The Blazers need a win after four straight losses as the offense has declined each game from 116, 111, 107, to 93 points. The Hawks are in better form right now, but the number continues to come down in favor of Portland. I'd rather back the Under in another low-scoring contest between the teams than pick a side in a tossup on a -5.5 to -6.5."

How Soon Will Ryan Leonard Boost The Washington Capitals?
As if the Washington Capitals aren't good enough, they're getting one of the top prospects outside of the NHL for the stretch run and the playoffs.
The No. 2 NHL prospect in The Hockey News' annual Future Watch edition signed an entry-level deal with the Capitals after his Boston College Eagles were eliminated from the NCAA playoffs Sunday night.
Leonard has the complete package - skill, size, competitiveness, toughness. He has the opportunity to make an immediate impact with a Stanley Cup contender.
Can he do what Cale Makar did in 2019? That might be a bit of stretch, considering he'll be eased into the Capitals' lineup on the bottom six, but don't be surprised if he proves very quickly that he can make a tangible contribution.
Today's video column has more.

Expert picks & predictions for Tuesday’s Raptors vs. Bulls game
NBC Sports Bet Best Bet
Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Bulls to cover against the Raptors:
"While Toronto is on a four-game winning streak and Chicago has dropped the past two, this is a spot where I would back the Bulls. Chicago was on a nice 9-2 run over 11 games before losing to the Mavericks and Thunder. However, Toronto's winning streak is not impressive. Toronto beat Washington, Brooklyn, Charlotte, and Philadelphia — those teams rank bottom four in the East and have a combined 83-218 record (27.5%). Chicago beat teams like the Lakers, Nuggets, and Kings during their winning streak. It's Chicago or pass for me even at the -5 or -5.5."

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Under between the Suns and Bucks:
"The Bucks dropped four straight games, while the Suns lost three consecutive games. Both offenses have struggled lately. The Suns have failed to crack 110 points in the three losses and the Bucks failed to do so in two of their four losses. Neither team is worth trusting with Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard dealing with injuries. It's Under 223.5 or pass for me.

Expert picks & predictions for Tuesday’s 76ers vs. Knicks game
NBC Sports Bet Best Bet
Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Knicks to cover:
"Four of the last five wins for the Knicks have resulted in double-digit wins and with the 76ers playing its third game in four days and riding an eight-game losing streak, I would have to pass on backing Philly. It's New York or pass for me even at the large number of -14."
