Golden Knights' Tomas Hertl Returns In Regular Practice Jersey

Vegas Golden Knights center Tomas Hertl returned to practice today in a regular practice jersey.

The 31-year-old suffered an upper-body injury on Mar. 23 against the Tampa Bay Lightning after Emil Lilleberg pushed Hertl into the boards, causing HC Bruce Cassidy to call the play "senseless."

On Apr. 2 Hertl returned to practice in a non-contact jersey, slowly attempting to work back to full contact.

"I’m sure he wants to be around his teammates," Cassidy said following the practice on Apr. 2. "He’s been putting the work in. We weren’t sure how it was going to come along, but good to see him back out there."

Now eight days later, Hertl is a full participant and took line rushes in his usual spot as the second-line center, alongside Pavel Dorofeyev and Brandon Saad.

The Praha, CZE native has been enjoying a wonderful first full season with the Golden Knights, scoring 31 goals and 59 points in 70 games. His return will help the Golden Knights' power play and ease the recent loss of Jack Eichel, who was absent from the team's practice after being announced day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

The Golden Knights are back in action tonight against the Seattle Kraken but Hertl's status for the fixture remains unknown.

Kraken Wrap Up Final Road Trip With Thursday Night Showdown in Vegas

Las Vegas, N.V - The Seattle Kraken conclude their final road trip of the season Thursday night with a visit to Las Vegas for their third and final matchup against the Golden Knights. The season series is currently tied, with each team earning a win on home ice—Vegas won 6-2 on Dec. 21, while Seattle earned a 4-3 overtime victory on Nov. 8.

Seattle will look to bounce back after a tough 7-1 loss Tuesday night to the Utah Hockey Club. A win in Vegas would help restore momentum before the team returns home for the final homestand of the season.

Victor Ostman who made his debut on Tuesday night in the third period in Utah is expected to be dressed and ready to backup Daccord.

Steve Kerr, Warriors share hopeful Gary Payton II, Quinten Post injury update

Steve Kerr, Warriors share hopeful Gary Payton II, Quinten Post injury update originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The Warriors could have two vital role players back in the lineup Friday night against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Gary Payton II (right knee inflammation) and Quinten Post (illness), who missed the last two games, have been upgraded to questionable for the game at Moda Center.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr shared a positive outlook on Payton and Post’s availability while talking Thursday to Mark T. Willard and Dan Dibley on 95.7 The Game.

“We’re hopeful,” Kerr told Willard and Dibley. “They’re both on the trip and we’re hopeful that they will play. I thought Gary’s absence was really big last night. We had a hard time staying in front of [guard Stephon] Castle, you know, when they went small and took [center Bismack] Biyombo out, it was basically 5-out. They had shooting everywhere and we really struggled staying in front of Castle, and that really caused a lot of the breakdowns that led to a lot of the threes.

“That’s one of the reasons Gary is so crucial to us, his on-ball defense. You put him on the best ball handler, the point guard, and then at the other end, he’s one of our best finishers as a roll man, as a dive man. He’s a point guard on defense and a power forward on offense, as you guys know. We missed him last night.

“We missed Quinten’s space, shooting with that second group that we start, or I shouldn’t say second group, but top of the 2nd [quarter], top of the 4th [quarter] lineup that we’ve gotten very comfortable with. So, we miss those guys, but it’s all part of it. Everybody has injuries and we needed to respond a little bit better and we just we didn’t do it, but now we’ve got to respond again.”

The Warriors blew out the floundering Phoenix Suns without Payton and Post on Tuesday night, but struggled in a devastating loss to the feisty San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.

The loss dropped the Warriors to the Western Conference’s No. 7 seed. If Golden State wants to avoid the play-in tournament, they’ll need Payton and Post available for the final two regular-season games against the Blazers on Friday and the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.

The Blazers will be short-handed for the game against the Warriors. Center Deandre Ayton, forward Jerami Grant, guard Scoot Henderson, guard Bryce McGowens, guard Anfernee Simons and center Robert Williams III are out, while forward Deni Avdija is doubtful and forward Shaedon Sharpe is questionable.

But if the Spurs game taught the Warriors anything, they can’t overlook an opponent, no matter how many players that team is missing.

Penguins Recall Three Forwards, Rule Five Forwards Out For Remainder Of Season

With just three games remaining on the Pittsburgh Penguins' regular season schedule, it appears the injury situation on the NHL roster is beginning to deplete the AHL team.

Forwards Vasily Ponomarev, Emil Bemstrom, and Valtteri Puustinen were recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (WBS) - Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate - on an emergency basis after head coach Mike Sullivan announced that forwards Noel Acciari, Blake Lizotte, Rutger McGroarty, Matt Nieto, and Tommy Novak will miss the remainder of the regular season.

Emergency recalls do not count toward the post-deadline limit of four AHL call-ups, so each recalled forward is eligible to play without issue.

All three recalled forwards have seen some semblance of NHL ice this season, and they have been major players in WBS's quest for a Calder Cup. Ponomarev has 15 goals and 40 points in 54 AHL games, and Puustinen has 16 goals and 35 points in 47 games.

Bemstrom leads WBS in points-per-game (1.02) with 21 goals and 46 points in 45 games, and he was named an AHL All-Star this season.

Acciari, 33, had five goals and 12 points - as well as a team-leading 100 blocked shots and 180 hits - in 79 games this season. Lizotte, 27, had two separate injured reserve stints earlier this season and registered 11 goals - tying a career high - and 20 points. Both players are under contract for one more season with the Penguins.

Novak was traded from the Nashville Predators to the Penguins prior to deadline day in a package that sent forward Michael Bunting the other way. The 27-year-old center had played in just two games for the Penguins before going down with an injury that has kept him out since Mar. 9, and he has two years remaining on a contract worth $3.5 million annually.

Nieto had been waived by the Penguins on Feb. 24 and has recorded just one goal and three points in 32 games. He is set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer.

Penguins Lose Top Prospect McGroarty In 5-0 Win Over BlackhawksPenguins Lose Top Prospect McGroarty In 5-0 Win Over BlackhawksAfter an uninspiring loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins were able to exact revenge on home ice Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old McGroarty was impressing in his latest stint at the NHL level, putting up a goal and three points in five games and displaying some natural chemistry on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust. McGroarty was expected to join WBS for their Calder Cup playoff run after the conclusion of the NHL regular season.

If WBS makes a deeper run, there is a chance McGroarty could make a return sometime later in the playoffs.

Dwight Howard to play in BIG3 this summer

Dwight Howard is headed to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

But first, he is going to play in the Big3 this summer.

"On behalf of the entire league, I want to be the first one to welcome Dwight Howard to the BIG3," league co-founder Ice Cube said in a statement. "His legacy speaks for itself, and he still has fun playing the game. We all know that Dwight Howard can do more on the basketball court than he was able to show in the NBA. So, it's going to be nice to see him open up his game and show his all-around skills on the court in the BIG3.

"He's a perfect fit for the league, not just because of his athleticism and size but also due to our shared desire to grow the game of basketball around the world. We are honored that he has chosen to bring his game and star power to the BIG3. I look forward to seeing him challenge our 3-on-3 stars this summer and see if he can win himself another Championship."

Howard had an impressive Hall of Fame career in 18 NBA seasons. He was a three-time Defensive Player of the Year winner, an eight-time All-NBA, and he led the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals, then won a ring in the bubble with the Lakers.

Howard will play for the Los Angeles Riot as the BIG3 moves to a city-based format for the first time (it had been more of a barnstorming tour style in previous years). Howard joins coach Nick Young and co-captains Jordan Crawford and Elijah Stewart on the team.

This year the BIG3 will debut eight all-new teams representing home markets in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, the DMV metropolitan area (Washington D.C.), Houston, Los Angeles and Miami.

It will be good just to see Howard back on the court and hooping again.

Pittsburgh Penguins Recall Emil Bemstrom, Vasily Ponomarev, And Valtteri Puustinen From Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

© Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced they have recalled forwards Emil Bemstrom, Valtteri Puustinen, and Vasily Ponomarev from their AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Bemstrom has 46 points in 45 games in the AHL and one point in 13 games in the NHL this season.

The 25-year-old was acquired by the Penguins in March 2024 in exchange for Alex Nylander. He has been a stellar AHL player in his career but has not been able to replicate offense at the same rate at the NHL level.

Puustinen has 35 points in 47 AHL games two points in 10 NHL games this season.

A seventh round selection of the Penguins in 2019, Puustinen has amassed 65 goals and 149 points in 216 career AHL games. He captured a silver with Team Finland at the 2021 World Championship.

Ponomarev has 40 points in 54 AHL games and zero points in four NHL games this season.

The 23-year-old was acquired in the trade that sent Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes last season. He won the 2022 Calder Cup with the Chicago Wolves.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton currently sit fourth place in the AHL's Atlantic Division.

Penguins forwards Tommy Novak, Blake Lizotte, Noel Acciari, Rutger McGroarty, and Matt Nieto are all out for the remaidner of the season, allowing Puustinen, Ponomarev, and Bemstrom the opportunity for more NHL experience.

"While Giannis is listed as questionable, if he does go, he likely won't play significant minutes in this game. The Bucks are -15.5 point favorites with him, so I would take the gamble and settle for a push or your money back if he doesn't play."

Alec Bohm moved down to 7th in Phillies' lineup — is it temporary?

Alec Bohm moved down to 7th in Phillies' lineup — is it temporary? originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

ATLANTA — The Phillies moved struggling Alec Bohm down three spots in the lineup for Thursday’s series finale at Truist Park.

Bohm bats seventh against Braves right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach.

  1. Kyle Schwarber, DH (L)
  2. Trea Turner, SS
  3. Bryce Harper, 1B (L)
  4. Nick Castellanos, RF
  5. Max Kepler, LF (L)
  6. J.T. Realmuto, C
  7. Alec Bohm, 3B
  8. Bryson Stott, 2B (L)
  9. Brandon Marsh, CF (L)

Is the change temporary?

“We’ll see,” manager Rob Thomson said. “I’m just trying to take a little heat off of Bohmer and Casty’s swinging the bat good. That’s really what it comes down to.”

“(He’s) probably disappointed. He likes hitting where he’s hitting. But I think he also realizes that he’s not swinging the bat the way he normally does.”

Bohm went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts in Wednesday’s 4-3 win and is 4-for-35 (.114) without a walk or extra-base hit in his last eight games.

He hit a two-run double in extra innings in the Phillies’ Opening Day win in D.C. but has gone 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position since.

Part of it has been bad luck. Wednesday was his worst night of the season but Bohm actually has a career-high rate of hard-hit balls and barrels so far. He’s lined out or flied out to deep center and right-center nine times — that’s one-fifth of his plate appearances. If even three of those balls fell in, he’d be hitting 66 points higher.

“I think a lot of hitters get into that at times where they’re hitting the ball hard and not getting any results and then they start tweaking things because they think they’re not doing something right,” Thomson said. “I’m not saying that’s what he’s doing but that’s what happens. You have to look at it realistically and know that things are good, it’s just bad luck right now.

“Just reminding him that he was an All-Star last year with 97 RBIs and a high batting average. It’s not like you want to move guys around but sometimes there’s a need for it and sometimes it helps the guy to just kind of relax and put himself on auto-pilot and just go play.”

It helps that Castellanos has been hitting. He’s looked comfortable at the plate since Opening Day, batting .308/.372/.538 with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and four walks.

The Phillies will hope to play fast on Thursday night. Heavy rain is expected anywhere from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Atlanta and is expected to remain consistent through the night once it begins.

Expert picks & predictions for Thursday’s Hawks vs. Nets game

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Over between the Hawks and Nets:

"The Nets are playing mostly backups at this point and defense has looked optional, especially against New Orleans last time out. The Hawks likely won't play a majority of their starters for full minutes, but this is a good game for the backups to gain confidence on the Atlanta side. I'd lean the Over, but ultimately pass on this game."

Former NBA players states Mobley, not Draymond, deserves DPOY

Former NBA players states Mobley, not Draymond, deserves DPOY originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Former NBA player Chandler Parsons believes that Cleveland Cavaliers center Evan Mobley should win the 2024-25 Defensive Player of the Year over Draymond Green.

Parsons gave his thoughts in response to Mobley’s claim on a recent podcast that he should win the award given to the NBA’s best defensive player.

“I agree [on Mobley winning DPOY],” Parsons said to host Michelle Beadle and former NBA player Lou Williams on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back” on Thursday. “I think Draymond Green is fantastic. I think he’s versatile. He provides so much for that defense, and I think they’re the seventh-ranked defense. I think Cleveland is the eighth-best defense.

“But you look at the whole landscape of what Evan Mobley does, how he alters shots, how he rebounds the basketball. The jump that he’s made [this season]. There’s also an argument for all of these guards who have had great years. Like [Oklahoma City Thunder guard Lugentz] Dort, like [Atlanta Hawks guard] Dyson Daniels, and they don’t get the attention that they should.”

While Green is the engine powering the Warriors’ resurgent defense this season, Mobley has been otherworldly for the Cavaliers. With a stunning blend of size and athleticism, the 23-year-old has become one of the league’s elite defenders.

Green is no slouch, but he has struggled with consistency throughout the season, particularly when he’s forced to guard larger players around the rim.

With Cleveland on cruise control, having locked up the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed, the final two games of the regular season could go a long way towards Green boosting his stock. The Warriors are in win-now mode, needing victories in their final pair of games to avoid dropping into the NBA Play-in Tournament.

So, you can expect that Green will have an extra chip on his shoulder heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

Former Ottawa Senators Assistant General Manager Ray Shero Passes Away At Age 62

Ray Shero, a longtime NHL executive and former Ottawa Senators assistant GM, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 62.

His passing comes during an already tough week for the hockey community, which is also mourning the death of Greg Millen — the former NHL goaltender and longtime broadcaster. Millen served as the Senators’ TV colour analyst during Shero’s time in Ottawa.

Shero most recently worked as a senior advisor to GM Bill Guerin and the Minnesota Wild, part of a great career in NHL management that began in Ottawa in 1993. After parting company with the Sens to take the same role in Nashville in 1998, he eventually got his first GM job with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006 and won a Stanley Cup in 2009 with a young Sidney Crosby leading the charge.

“Ray Shero was a big part of my early days in Pittsburgh,” Crosby said in a statement posted on Penguins' social media. “He gave me a lot of opportunity as a young captain and supported me throughout his time. He did so much for our organization and my memories with him are special. I am grateful for our time spent here and that we were able to share a Stanley Cup Championship together.”

Dan Bylsma, now in Seattle, was Shero’s head coach on that 2009 Penguins’ Cup winner, and the news hit him especially hard.

“Not many people knew how ill he was,” Bylsma told The Athletic. “Only a couple of family members and a couple of friends. That was it. From what I hear, that’s what Ray wanted. He had this huge circle because everyone loved Ray. But only a handful of people knew. I am absolutely devastated.”

That 2009 Cup win allowed Shero to hoist the Cup like his father, Fred, did 34 years earlier as head coach of the Penguins’ state rival, the Philadelphia Flyers

Here’s part of Commissioner Gary Bettman’s statement on NHL.com:

“Ray Shero’s smile and personality lit up every room he walked into and brightened the day of everyone he met,” Bettman said. “Widely respected throughout hockey for his team-building acumen and eye for talent, he was even more beloved for how he treated everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

“Whenever we ran into each other at a rink when he was scouting, it was clear he loved what he was doing, and I always marveled at his infectious enthusiasm. The entire National Hockey League family mourns his passing and sends our deepest condolences to the Shero family and Ray’s many friends throughout the hockey world.”

Shero spent 13 seasons as an NHL GM, first with the Penguins from 2006–14 before his five seasons with the Devils. But before that, he was part of the Senators' very young front office during the team’s early years, working as assistant GM under Randy Sexton.

Sexton and Shero were teammates at St. Lawrence University, the alma mater of several Sens executives in those days. After school, Shero became an agent for several years before his old teammate reached out to him to help run the Sens’ front office.

The Senators posted this statement on social media:

“It’s with a heavy heart that we learn about the passing of Ray Shero, a member of the Ottawa Senators front office hockey operations from 1993–1998 and a key contributor across many NHL organizations over the course of his career.”

Shero would, most assuredly, have been pleased to see the team that gave him his start getting back on the right track this season. The Hockey News sends condolences to his family and friends.

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Pacers to cover:

"Cleveland is sitting four of their starters with the No. 1 seed locked up for the Eastern Conference, so this is a Pacers or pass spot for me. The first-half spread might not be a bad look before Indiana sits a starter or two in the second half."

Expert picks & predictions for Thursday’s Knicks vs. Pistons game

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Knicks to cover:

"While I am a supporter of the Pistons and JB Bickerstaff for Coach of the Year, I don't love this spot for the Pistons even with Cade Cunningham back. Jalen Brunson has looked good in two games back, while Detroit has gotten comfortable over the last few weeks without their leading scorer and passer. It may take a little to shake off the rust for Detroit's offense, so I lean toward the Knicks with the points, which opened at +5 down to +3.5 and the Team Total Under 116.5 on the Pistons."
