Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

How Ruben Amorim could stop the rot, Brighton to go Greek and an Anfield baptism of fire for Eberechi Eze

Calling Chelsea “Cole Palmer FC” is not much of an insult. Oh no, you have one of the best attackers in the world. Oh no, you got him for a bargain price. Oh no, he won you the Club World Cup last month. Still, no side ever wants to be completely reliant on one player. Chelsea aim to depend more on the collective than the individual. They have struggled without Palmer in the past but thrived in his absence against West Ham last week. Palmer withdrew with a groin injury during the warm-up and is a doubt to face Fulham in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off. However, Enzo Maresca has options. Estêvão Willian came in for Palmer against West Ham and was exceptional on the right wing. João Pedro and Pedro Neto were excellent. Chelsea have enough talent at their disposal to beat Fulham without Palmer. Jacob Steinberg

Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool: Premier League – as it happened

Ten-man Newcastle fought back from two goals down, only to succumb to a sensational 100th-minute winner from 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha

44 secs: Elanga chases down the right and wins the first corner of the game. From which …

A huge St James’ Park roar as the two teams huddle, then Liverpool get the ball rolling. Plenty of boos as they kick off. Then another roar as Burn heads clear. What an atmosphere!

Rangers Prospect Malcolm Spence's Speed Is ‘A Weapon’

The New York Rangers may have gotten a steal during the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft.

With the 43rd overall pick, the Rangers selected explosive forward Malcolm Spence, who many projected would be a first-round pick.

Serving as the assistant captain for the Erie Otters of The Ontario Hockey League this past season, Spence lit up the stat sheet as he recorded 32 goals, 41 assists, and 73 points in 65 games.

It’s his speed and strong skating abilities that intrigued the Rangers about Spence, leading to them ultimately drafting him.

"His speed is a weapon," Rangers director of player development Jed Ortmeyer said via NHL.com. "His skating ability too. He's tenacious with the puck. He's been able to produce at the junior level. I think it'll be a good spot for him to develop."

This upcoming season, the 18-year-old forward is set to play at the University of Michigan, one of the most prestigious hockey programs in the NCAA.

“I know to play in the NHL, you have to be physically ready,” Spence said. “Maybe there are parts of my game skill-wise that may be ready, but physically I’m not. I know going to Michigan is going to give me more runway time. For me to jump in as an impact player, that’s what I want to do.”

Igor Shesterkin Took A Positive Step Last Season, But It Wasn't On The Ice Igor Shesterkin Took A Positive Step Last Season, But It Wasn't On The Ice Throughout the entirety of the 2024-25 season, there was a lot of noise surrounding Igor Shesterkin, but he remained quiet.

It will likely take about one-two years before we see Spence playing in the NHL. Regardless of when it happens, Spence is ready to represent the Blueshirts with pride and is already thinking about that special opportunity.

“I'm really excited that they took a chance on me and believed in me when a lot of the other people didn't,” Spence said. “So I'm really excited to get to New York City and get to work.”

A rarity in the NHL Draft, Perbix was selected out of high school, picked 169th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

During his senior year at Elk River High School in Minnesota, he scored 40 points in 25 games and was a finalist for the Mr. Hockey statewide award. The following season, he'd join the Omaha Lancers in the USHL.

In his first junior year, Perbix scored 29 points in 56 games and had a plus/minus of 19. He also had two points in four playoff games that year.

He'd commit to St. Cloud State University for the 2018-19 season and play there until 2022. In four seasons, Perbix recorded 89 points in 135 games and just 71 penalty minutes. In his senior year, he'd earn All-NCHC First Team honors.

During his senior year, Perbix had the opportunity to play for the United States at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. He had one point in four games as the United States finished fifth.

Professional career

Perbix joined the Syracuse Crunch for the final 12 games of the 2021-22 season, where he scored eight points in 12 games and recorded one point in five playoff games.

He'd only play two games in Syracuse the next season, earning a call-up to Tampa for the majority of the season. Perbix played in 69 games, scoring 20 points for a plus/minus of 11 and logging 22 penalty minutes. He played in six playoff games, scoring three points.

In the 2023-24 season, he played a career high 77 NHL games, recording 24 points, 22 of them being assists, and just 10 penalty minutes. Last season, Perbix had 19 points in 74 games and 20 penalty minutes.

As a free agent this offseason, Perbix signed a 2 year, $5.5 million contract with the Predators.

There was a lot of talk about how Nicolas Hague was the Predators' best signing in the offseason, but statistically, it was Perbix.

They didn't lock him down on a long contract, but he's a defenseman who's proven to be a little bit more offensively active and isn't in and out of the penalty box. Specifically, with the 22 assists during the 23-24 season, he can get players the puck.

On the back end, the Predators need more defensemen who can push the puck. Roman Josi and Brady Skjei have done that, but that effort needs to be spread up and down the lineup, or at least expanded in the first two pairings.

Perbix hasn't done a ton of scoring in his NHL career, but he has the potential to be an active defender if put in the right situation. He should be getting a run at working with Josi or Skjei and getting the chance to elevate his game.

  • Italians went up 4-0 in tiebreak before Swiatek double fault sealed win

Dodgers' Ohtani roughed up by Rockies, leaves game after getting hit on right thigh by line drive

DENVER — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani had a forgettable outing in his first career pitching start against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Ohtani left Wednesday's game after giving up five earned runs and nine hits in four innings and getting hit in the leg by a comeback line drive.

With runners at second and third and one out in the fourth inning, Ohtani got hit by a 93-mph line drive off the bat of Colorado's Orlando Arciao on his right leg that caused him to limp and grimace in pain. The liner struck the reigning National League MVP on the knee and ricocheted toward the first base line. Ohtani gave chase and grabbed the ball on the line, spun to make a throw, but had no play as a runner scored.

After a mound visit from manager Dave Roberts and team medical personnel, Ohtani stayed in the game and got the last two outs of the inning, with the Dodgers trailing 5-0 at the time. The Dodgers lost to Colorado 8-3.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game that the line drive hit Ohtani on the thigh and managed to avoid his knee and any on-bone contact.

The earned runs that Ohtani allowed matched the most he had permitted since July 2022, and the nine hits allowed matched a career high.

Ohtani stayed in the game and drew a walk in his at-bat in the fifth inning, but did not bat in the eighth. He was replaced by Alex Call, who struck out.

Ohtani was making his 10th start of the season after not pitching in the 2024 season while recovering from elbow surgery.

He entered Wednesday without a decision and a 3.47 ERA. This season, he hasn’t thrown more than 4 ⅓ innings or 80 pitches. Against the MLB-worst Rockies, he threw 66 pitches, 49 for strikes.

Ohtani is batting .284 with 44 homers, one behind NL-leading Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies, with 83 RBIs.

Premier League: 10 things to look out for on the opening weekend

Another new era at Tottenham, De Cuyper can shine for Brighton and Aston Villa remind us this is a business

A visit to an expectant Anfield, where Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitiké will be out to impress on their Premier League debuts, represents a daunting start for a Bournemouth team that have lost three-quarters of last season’s backline to the pulling power of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool this summer. Defensive issues are not exclusive to Andoni Iraola before the Premier League opener, however. Arne Slot voiced concern over the champions’ pre-season vulnerability before and after the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, when the absence of Ryan Gravenberch for family reasons was keenly felt. “Three times we lost the ball very simple in our midfield and three times they could counterattack us,” reflected the Liverpool head coach. Gravenberch will be missing again on Friday due to suspension but Slot expects the team with the second-best defensive record in the Premier League last season to react as soon as the serious business begins. “Mixed teams, new players coming in, Virgil [van Dijk] being sick, Alisson not being there,” he listed as reasons for Liverpool’s recent difficulties on Thursday. “But all of this is not an excuse when we start the league. We will 100% be ready on Friday.” Andy Hunter
