Ex-MLB Player Ruf Sues Reds Over Knee Injury From Tarp Collision

Former MLB first baseman and outfielder Darin Ruf, who played nine big-league seasons between 2012 and 2023, sued the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, claiming the team is negligent under Ohio law for his bloody collision with a tarp roller two years ago at Great American Ball Park.

Ruf was playing first base for the Milwaukee Brewers against the Reds on June 2, 2023, when in the bottom of the third inning, he collided with a tarp roller while chasing a ball into foul territory and left the game injured. Ruf, now 38, hasn’t played in any games since.

In a complaint filed by attorneys Tad Thomas and Christopher W. Goode in the Hamilton County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas, Ruf contends the tarp roller was a dangerous and hidden condition that imperiled players’ safety.

The tarp roller, Ruf points out, was made of sharp metal and lacked any protective cushioning or cap. Ruf says the end of the roller wasn’t visible because it was “obscured from view by an advertisement cover for Gorilla Glue.” Ruf blames the Reds grounds crew for failing to maintain safe conditions and allowing “a state of disrepair.”

Players suing over injuries caused or worsened by field conditions are rare but not unprecedented.

In 2018, a St. Louis jury awarded Reggie Bush $12.5 million in damages for an ACL tear he sustained after slipping on an uncovered concrete surface in the Edward Jones Dome during a game in 2015. The surface bordered the playing field, and Bush was running at full speed and couldn’t stop. The jury concluded the condition was unsafe and that Bush’s injury was caused by the negligence of the Los Angeles Rams, who were the St. Louis Rams when Bush was hurt.

The Reds did not respond to a request for comment, but their attorneys will answer Ruf’s complaint in the weeks ahead. Expect the team to offer several defenses.

One likely defense is preemption, which is a major reason why pro athletes in leagues with collective bargaining agreements typically don’t sue over injuries. Section 301 of the Labor Management Relations Act (LMRA)—a federal law that regulates the relationship between unionized workers and management—contains language that preempts state law claims when those claims are based on rights contained in a CBA.

MLB’s CBA with the MLBPA features language regarding player injuries. Article XIII is particularly relevant. It governs safety and health and details a joint MLB-MLBPA advisory committee charged with addressing “emergency safety and health problems as they arise.” The committee also “attempts to find solutions” that ensure “safe and healthful working conditions for players.” The Reds will likely argue the duty to maintain safe field conditions is a collectively bargained term and thus LMRA preempted.

That type of legal argument doesn’t always work. In 2018, a federal judge in Illinois rejected it when raised by the Chicago White Sox and other parties were sued by former New York Yankees outfielder Dustin Fowler.

In 2017, Fowler made his MLB debut in a game at Guaranteed Rate Field (now called Rate Field) in Chicago. In the first inning he chased down a line drive and ran full speed into an unpadded metal electrical box positioned between a railing and a half wall. The collision caused the patella tendon in Fowler’s knee to rupture. He sued and a judge rejected the preemption defense on grounds that the CBA didn’t diminish the White Sox’s duty of care, including when the subject of state law claims. According to court records, the parties reached a settlement in 2022.

Fowler recovered from the injury and was notably involved in a blockbuster 2017 midseason trade that sent him to the Oakland A’s as part of the deal that netted the Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray. But the outfielder, once the No. 88 prospect in baseball according to Baseball America, never managed to deliver upon his promise in an MLB career that petered out in 2021.

The Reds could also argue that even if Ruf’s claims aren’t preempted, the field conditions were sufficiently safe. The Reds would strengthen that defense if they could show the tarp roller was placed in a manner consistent with industry standards in MLB. In other words, the more ordinary the condition of the roller, the better for the Reds. But if tarp rollers are supposed to have cushioning or caps when used on MLB fields, that could be a problem for the Reds. Expert testimony by former groundskeepers and others with relevant expertise could prove influential.

Assumption of risk is also a relevant legal concept. Athletes assume all sorts of health risks by playing a sport. MLB teams place tarps and players, especially ones with as much experience as Ruf, arguably should be aware of tarp-related hazards. Ruf’s complaint anticipates this defense by depicting the tarp roller as hidden and unexpected.

The Reds also don’t own Great American Ball Park. It is a public facility of Hamilton County, Ohio. Public entities have an added legal defense known as sovereign immunity, which generally permits the government to be sued only when it agrees to be sued. However, there are a bevy of exceptions to sovereign immunity, and sometimes they involve personal injury claims. Also, even if the Reds don’t own the field, they operate it for Reds games.

Ruf v. Reds could settle at any time, but if it advances past a motion to dismiss, the parties will need to provide testimony and share evidence related to the incident. The extent to which the tarp roller was unusually dangerous and the extent to which a veteran like Ruf should have been on the lookout would be key topics in pretrial discovery.

NBA MVP Gilgeous-Alexander rocks Giants hat after OKC's playoff win

NBA MVP Gilgeous-Alexander rocks Giants hat after OKC's playoff win originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The Giants might have an unexpected member of their fan base.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard and 2025 NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sported a plaid baseball cap with an orange San Francisco logo on it after Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.

Gilgeous-Alexander, known for his unique fashion sense highlighted by eye-popping game day fits, paired the Giants hat with a nude-colored vest and white tank top with nude pants and, of course, a blinged-out chain necklace.

The 26-year-old finished Thursday night’s contest with a game-high 38 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field, three rebounds, eight assists and three steals in 42 minutes in Oklahoma City’s 118-103 win to take a commanding 2-0 series victory over Minnesota.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the league in points during the 2024-25 regular season, averaging 32.7 points on 51.9 percent shooting, with 5.0 rebounds and 6.4 assists in 76 games while lifting the Thunder to a league-best 68-14 record.

Now, the MVP’s choice of apparel might have been different had the Warriors defeated the Timberwolves in the Western Conference semifinals and advanced to face Gilgeous-Alexander’s Thunder.

Needless to say, the man’s got good taste.

Can Ex-Red Wings Coach Blashill Turn it Around in Chicago?

Mar 5, 2019; Denver, CO, USA; Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill reacts during the second period against the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center. (Ron Chenoy, Imagn Images)

On Thursday, the Chicago Blackhawks made official a secret that hadn't been protected very tightly: Jeff Blashill is now the franchise's 42nd head coach.  Blashill is of course a familiar name to Detroit Red Wings fans, having served in the same role in Detroit from 2015 (replacing the infamous Mike Babcock) until 2022 (when he was replaced by Derek Lalonde).

Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest newsgame-day coverage, and player features

Blashill has coached the fifth most games (537) in Red Wings franchise history.  He arrived at the head gig in Detroit having already coached the Grand Rapids Griffins to their first Calder Cup in franchise history in 2013.  His tenure behind the Red Wings bench was a difficult one: the playoff streak died, and the worst of the rebuild kicked in.  It's hard to pin much of that on Blashill considering the rosters he was dealt, but the record isn't pretty at 204-261-72.

So, can Blashill help the Blackhawks out of their extended rebuild in his second go-round behind an NHL bench?

The Blackhawks job Blashill walks into is certainly an alluring one, but also one with obvious difficulties.  2023 first overall pick Connor Bedard is the obvious source of that allure: billed as a talismanic, franchise-altering prospect heading into his draft, but also coming off a relative sophomore slump with 23 goals and 67 points.  Bedard isn't the only intriguing prospect in Chicago.  The likes of Frank Nazar, Oliver Moore, Sam Rinzel, and Artyom Levshunov are also budding NHLers with ample potential.

At the same time, like most teams coming out of a rebuild, the Hawks are desperately short on depth up front and on the blue line.  Spencer Knight (acquired in the deal that sent Seth Jones to the Florida Panthers this season) could well prove to be a reliable number one option in net, but he doesn't yet have the track record to support that outcome.  Chicago hasn't made it to even 30 wins since 2019-20.  That's a lot of organizational malaise to overcome.

Then comes the tricky question of expectations.  As Lalonde reminded the world in a recent interview, the vast majority of modern NHL coaches are hired just to be fired.  The Blackhawks can't reasonably expect to contend any time soon, but with Bedard entering the final year of his entry-level contract, there is also a sense of urgency and a ticking clock.

While so-called 're-tread' coaches often draw frustration from fans, there is legitimate reason to believe that Blashill will be a better head coach for the experience he earned in Detroit (and for having worked as an assistant under Jon Cooper in Tampa in the seasons following his Red Wings exit).  Despite rosters generally bereft of talent, Blashill did seem to have a knack for maximizing players like Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi, whose best NHL seasons came under his watch.

At the same time, he's walked into another job where the roster isn't on his side, and that's a major hurdle to overcome in a market not so dissimilar from Detroit in that the fan base has vivid memories of championship success, yet those memories are increasingly distant.

Can Blashill turn it around in Chicago?  Let us know what you think in the comments.

How Knicks should approach Game 2 against Pacers after Game 1 calamity

Wednesday night was a gut punch. After a stunning 138-135 loss to the Pacers in overtime, the Knicks have to regroup quickly.

New York held a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter with just 3:40 left before conceding 23 points to Indiana for the rest of regulation.

Despite all the reasons for doom and gloom, the Knicks should not panic. There was a list of positives to build on ahead of Game 2 on Friday night.

First, is how efficient the team’s offense was for the majority of Wednesday night. New York’s offense scored 126.2 points per 100 possessions in Game 1 -- a figure that would lead the league in the regular season.

The Pacers don’t switch heavily on the pick-and-roll and their perimeter defenders try to go over every screen. It fits the way they want to play, which is fast and aggressive. But it also allowed New York’s stars Jalen Brunson andKarl-Anthony Towns to cook. The duo combined for an efficient 78 points. Brunson and Towns also were able to regularly march to the charity stripe as they combined for 25 free-throw attempts.

Towns is a different player when guarded by a center. Except for a few attempts to have wing Aaron Nesmith or Pascal Siakam defend him, Pacers big men Myles Turner and Thomas Bryant were assigned to Towns for much of the night.

Towns thrived from deep, knocking down four three-pointers. Against the Celtics, he made just three trifectas in six games. Brunson was able to get to his spots and had advantages offensively. With 43 points on over 50 percent shooting, it was probably one of the easier offensive nights he will have.

Mitchell Robinson and Miles McBride both were solid off the bench. As I hinted at before the series, Robinson is the Knicks’ X-factor. He had eight rebounds in 21 minutes, with four boards coming on the offensive end.

The Knicks could look at more minutes of Towns and Robinson together. The two centers on the floor at the same time has been positive. In 97 minutes during the postseason, Towns and Robinson have outscored opponents by 13.0 points per 100 possessions, per NBA Stats. In Game 1, they were a plus-seven.

It’s not all roses

Even with the positives, it would be hard to ignore the concerns. The Knicks gave up 138 points. Tyrese Haliburton was comfortable and got downhill several times. There were also too many times the point guard found himself wide open for three.

The Knicks also failed to contain Nesmith, who hit six three-pointers in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter. All of the shots were wide open, which sparked Indiana’s comeback.

The main culprit for those mistakes was New York’s inconsistent approach to defending screens. As the game wore on, New York’s players seemed unsure if they were switching or fighting through off-ball screens.

Indiana is a relentless team. Led by Haliburton, they thrive off the pass and man movement. If New York is going to defend better, the team has to be more crisp and communicate better.

Even more of a concern is the continued struggles of New York’s starting lineup. The five man unit has logged a league-high in minutes together and has a negative 8.0 net rating in 292 playoff minutes. They were a negative 16 in the Conference Finals opener. Head coach Tom Thibodeau could make lineup or strategic adjustments.

The loss stings, but there was some good the Knicks can take from it. If the team continues to produce offensively and makes defensive adjustments, they can even this series.

How likely are Celtics to trade up for a lottery pick in NBA Draft?

How likely are Celtics to trade up for a lottery pick in NBA Draft? originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Let’s start with the obvious: The Boston Celtics almost certainly aren’t trading for Cooper Flagg.

But their work at the 2025 NBA Scouting Combine in Chicago — which reportedly included interviewing the Duke star and projected No. 1 pick — might provide some insight into how they’re approaching the 2025 NBA Draft.

Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor reported last week that Boston conducted interviews with both Flagg and Texas guard Tre Johnson (a projected top-five draft pick) at the Draft Combine. On a recent episode of NBC Sports Boston’s Arbella Early Edition, O’Connor confirmed the Celtics also spoke to Georgia forward Asa Newell, who projects as a top-15, late-lottery selection.

The C’s currently have picks No. 28 and 32 in the 2025 NBA Draft. So, why are they speaking with players who are seemingly out of their range? O’Connor shared his insight on Early Edition.

“You rank the guys you want to talk to,” O’Connor said. “The way it works at the Draft Combine in Chicago is, you rank the players you want to talk to, and the teams that have the players ranked the highest get the opportunity to talk to those guys.

“Each prospect can talk to up to 13 teams, so the Celtics may have had Cooper Flagg ranked second or third in their rankings of prospects. So, it’s not the biggest deal in the world they got to talk to him. But I do think it’s interesting they talked to at least three guys who could be drafted in the lottery.

“They talked to Cooper Flagg, likely No. 1, they talked to Tre Johnson, likely a top-five pick out of Texas, and then Asa Newell, a big man out of Georgia, a late-lottery pick, mid-first-round draft pick. So, they talked to at least three guys in theory they’d have interest in.

“You’re not going to talk to somebody if you don’t like the player.”

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens downplayed Boston’s reported interview with Flagg earlier this week, explaining that the team’s goal with these interviews is to gather general intel on players who normally wouldn’t come to Boston for in-person workouts with the team.

“The people we know who we can’t get in to work out is how we decide who we want to talk to. Otherwise, we may never get to talk to them again,” Stevens told reporters Monday. “So, the only people that come and work out for us are the people that think they’re in a range or bottom of our range, or whatever the case may be.”

Stevens also downplayed the possibility of “fireworks” in the form of a trade up on draft night, and Boston would have to give up a massive haul to jump from No. 28 into the top five. A move into the 13-15 range might be more feasible, however, especially if the Celtics see potential in a player like Newell.

At 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, the Georgia product is an athletic big man who averaged 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game as a freshman last season. With Al Horford and Luke Kornet set to be free agents and Kristaps Porzingis a potential trade target, Boston could use frontcourt reinforcements, and the 19-year-old Newell has plenty of upside.

The Celtics may not want to part with the assets required to trade up in the draft, and they’ve had success near the end of the first round before (Robert Williams at No. 27; Payton Pritchard at No. 26). But if they’re serious about shedding salary to get under the second apron of the luxury tax, they’ll need to hit on draft picks, which could make it worthwhile to move up the 2025 draft board.

Phillies at Athletics Prediction: Odds, expert picks, starting pitchers, betting trends and stats for May 23

Its Friday, May 23 and the Phillies (32-18) are in Sacramento to take on the Athletics (22-29).

Zack Wheeler is slated to take the mound for Philadelphia against Jeffrey Springs for Oakland.

The Phillies' win streak is now at seven games following their sweep of the Rockies. Thursday was an unusually low-scoring affair for Coors Field, but the result was all too common...another Rockies' loss. Ranger Suarez and three Phillies' relievers held Colorado scoreless and limited them to seven hits. The Athletics have lost nine in a row. The Angels took four from the A's earlier this week including back-to-back 10-5 wins to close out the series. Thursday, Luis Severino held the Halos in check allowing just two runs through six innings, but the A's bullpen failed, and the Angels rallied for the win.

Lets dive into the matchup and find a sweat or two.
