When are the Padres playing the Cubs? MLB announces wild card game times

With the top wild card spot in the National League now in their hands, the San Diego Padres can turn their attention towards hosting the Chicago Cubs in their first postseason series. Friar faithful now know when they'll be able to cheer on their team, too.

MLB announced the start times for all four wild card series starting Tuesday, Sept. 29 and running through Thursday, Oct. 1. All but two matchups are set; the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are having a mid-off to decide who will be the division winner with the worst record in 21 years, and the Philadelphia Phillies are trying to avoid a monumental collapse in the final game of the regular season to keep the Arizona Diamondbacks out.

Other than that, Red Sox-Yankees and Padres-Cubs are all set to get the 2026 postseason underway.

The Padres get the late game in every scenario, being the westernmost team in the wild card. Each of their three-game series with the Cubs will begin at 7 p.m. PT. But in the event of a Game 3, there are a couple different scenarios to look out for.

Here are the scheduled start times for Padres-Cubs, including all Game 3 scenarios for Thursday, Oct. 1:

If Thursday, Oct. 1, has only one Game 3, then it will be played at 5 p.m. on NBC and Peacock

Who will be Padres' NLDS opponent?

If the Padres win their wild card series, they would advance to take on the No. 1 seed Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. It'll be a tough one, with the Brew Crew reaching 100 wins for the first time in franchise history and claiming at least a share of the NL's best record, but the Padres had success against them in 2026, having won four of their six regular season meetings. Luis Campusano walked off their final matchup in the 11th inning on Aug. 12 on an opposite-field base hit that scored Sung-Mun Song from second base to finish off a three-game sweep of Milwaukee.

Will the Padres play the Dodgers in the NL playoffs?

In order for the two NL West rivals to square off again in the postseason, they would both need to advance to the NLCS. That means the Padres would need to take care of business against the Brewers and the Dodgers, who have a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the NL, would have to beat their opponent, which would either be the Braves or Phillies.

If it does happen, it would be the fourth postseason meeting between the two in the last six years. The Dodgers came away victorious last time in 2024 after a dramatic 2-1 comeback to eliminate the Padres after holding them scoreless for 24 consecutive innings. L.A. went on to win the first of its back-to-back World Series titles.

South Africa power to ODI series win as Australia’s middle order struggles again

  • Bavuma and Miller smash centuries in second ODI

  • Australia batters fall 32 runs short despite strong start

Temba Bavuma and David Miller both struck centuries as South Africa defeated Australia by 32 runs in the ⁠second one-day international in Johannesburg, securing victory in the three-match series with a game to spare.

Australia sent their hosts in to bat and South ⁠Africa amassed 365 for ⁠nine in their ​50 overs, before bowling the visitors out for 333 in 49.5 overs to win a high-scoring encounter. The Proteas continued their recent dominance over their rivals with a 19th ODI ⁠win in their last 25 meetings.

Ex-Sabres Report: Logan Stanley Signs, Jonas Johansson Traded, Waiver Wire

As the National Hockey League opens the regular season on Tuesday, the Buffalo Sabres added some defensive depth with the signing of veteran Matt Grzelcyk, but did not go down the road of bringing back big blueliner Logan Stanley. The 28-year-old former Winnipeg first-rounder was acquired from the Jets along with Luke Schenn by the Sabres for Isak Rosen, Jacob Bryson, and two draft picks at the trade deadline, and played mostly in a third-pairing role, posting five assists in 17 regular-season games, and was in the lineup for eight of Buffalo’s 13 playoff games. 

Coming off a career-high 26 points last season, and with a very thin crop of defensive free agents on the market, Stanley was in a prime position to get overpaid and get some term on a deal, but clearly he and his representatives overplayed their hand. On Sunday, the New York Islanders signed the veteran blueliner to a one-year, $1.5 million contract, giving him a landing spot for the year and an opportunity to prove last season was not a fluke. 

In other former Sabres news, 2016 first rounder Alex Nylander was placed on waivers by the Calgary Flames. The 28-year-old played all of last season for the Toronto Marlies and won a Calder Cup on an AHL contract. Nylander signed a PTO with the Flames and earned an NHL deal, but has to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL Wranglers.

Another former Sabre, defenseman Casey Fitzgersld, was placed on waivers by the Florida Panthers. Earlier in the week, as NHL clubs were cutting down to 23 players, other ex-Buffalo products Riley Stillman (Edmonton), Eric Comrie (San Jose), Zac Jones (Utah), and Viktor Neuchev (Carolina) all cleared waivers and were sent down to the AHL. 

The Tampa Bay Lightning dealt another former Sabre, goalie Jonas Johansson to the Ottawa Senators for future considerations. Johansson, 31, went 11-10-2, with a 3.29 GAA and .884 save % last season, but lost the backup battle with Dennis Hildeby. He now replaces youngster Leevi Merilainen, who was claimed by the Vancouver Canucks.

  • AT THE TROP: Today’s game will be the Cubs’ 12th at Tropicana Field. They are 4-7, including 2-1 this year. They lost to the Rays on April 6, then beat them on April 7 and 8. It will be the 243rd game for the Red Sox at “the Trop,” where they are 116-126 vs. the Rays overall and 1-6 this year. Shōta Imanaga, LHP vs. Tanner Houck, RHP

I’m actually a bit surprised that Shōta Imanaga is starting this game, unless the plan is to have him only go a couple of innings so he could be available maybe on Thursday against the Padres.

Imanaga has had a very good September: 1.96 ERA, 0.783 WHIP in four starts covering 23 innings, with only one home run allowed. Keep up the good work, Shōta. The last time he faced the Red Sox was July 19, 2025 at Wrigley Field, where he threw seven shutout innings and struck out five.

Tanner Houck, who had a really good year for the Red Sox in 2024, had Tommy John surgery after nine starts in 2025 and has not pitched in MLB at all this year. He’s thrown eight innings in four rehab outings in the Red Sox minor leagues this year and posted a 3.38 ERA and 0.875 WHIP.

No current Cub has more than six at-bats against Houck. Dansby Swanson is 2-for-5 with a home run. The pitch chart for Houck below is from 2025.

Islanders sign D Logan Stanley to one-year deal

Looking to bolster their blueline, the Islanders have signed Logan Stanley to a one-year deal. 

New York had a need for another left-handed defenseman on their NHL roster after sending young Isaiah George and Kashawn Aitcheson down to AHL Hamilton to begin the season. 

Stanley fills that hole and brings them some much-needed size on the backend. 

The 6-foot-8 defenseman skated in 76 regular season games with the Jets and Sabres last season, then appeared in eight more during the playoffs with Buffalo. 

His game his built around his size, but he did chip in more offensively last year. 

Stanley started the year on a career-best pace, producing 21 of his 26 points over 59 games with Winnipeg. 

He'll likely be a step or two behind to start the season having signed so close to Opening Night, but could slide right into their defensive rotation once he gets fully up to speed.  

New York opens their season Wednesday night against the Leafs.

Rest for regulars in Braves-Marlins series finale

Here we are, Braves Country. One last contest before some (afternoon, ugh) Postseason baseball at Truist Park starting Tuesday.

This is a lineup we’ve been expecting all week – one that allows the Braves to rest some of their stars. Drake Baldwin, Ronald Acuña Jr., and Michael Harris II all get watch this one from the dugout today.

Our modern iron man Matt Olson is where you expect him, though. His start today cements his fifth straight season of playing all 162 games.

Mauricio Dubón gets the start in left and will lead off today. Ozzie Albies will hit second. Austin Riley gets to be in the cleanup spot today ahead of DH Mike Yazstrzemski. Sean Murphy and Ha-Seong Kim get to move up a couple spots in the order to bat sixth and seventh, as their usual spots are taken by RF Brewer Hicklen and CF DaShawn Keirsey Jr.

For the Marlins, Griffin Conine will lead off and play right field. Javier Sanoja bumps up a couple spots to hit second and moves from third base to shortstop today. LF Heriberto Hernández drops a spot to third. Yesterday’s catcher Agustín Ramírez will hit cleanup as the designated hitter. Third baseman Graham Pauley follows. CF Esteury Ruiz remains at sixth and in center field. Deyvison De Los Santos, Jared Serna, and Brian Navarreto round out the batting order for the Fish.

First pitch for the final game of the regular season is at 3:10 pm ET.

Islanders sign defenseman Logan Stanley to a contract for this season

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Islanders signed defenseman Logan Stanley to a contract for this season, and he joined them for practice on Sunday.

They added the 28-year-old left-handed shooter late in training camp after sending young Kashawn Aitcheson and Isaiah George to their American Hockey League affiliate in Hamilton. George was considered a possibility to win a full-time roster spot at 22 after playing four games last season and 33 in 2024-25.

Stanley skated in 76 games last regular season for Winnipeg and Buffalo, then eight more in the playoffs with the Sabres. He has played in more than 300 NHL games since making his debut with the Jets in 2021.

Washington Nationals vs New York Mets Game Thread

This is it! The 2026 season ends for the Washington Nationals this afternoon. After this game against the Mets, the Nats enter a potentially longer than usual offseason. It has been a step forward season, but hopefully the season goes into October for the Nats next season. They have driven me nuts, but I will miss the 2026 Nationals.

With a lefty on the mound, the Nats will bring some right handed bats into the fold. Andres Chaparro will play first base and hit second. Jacob Young is also back in center field. That pushed Dylan Crews to right and James Wood to DH. Harry Ford also gets the start behind the plate. DJ Herz will make his second start and first in Nationals Park since 2024 this afternoon.

After leaving the game early following a HBP, Juan Soto is back in the Mets lineup. Brett Baty makes the move from shortstop to first base in this one. Francisco Lindor moves back to short and Marcus Semien will be at second. Ronny Mauricio is going to be the DH. Luis Torrens starts behind the plate. Sean Manaea gets the start for the Mets.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles: Elmer Rodríguez vs. Shane Baz

We have reached the end of the 2026 regular season. In a couple hours, the 162-game marathon will be complete and full focus will turn to the sprint that is the playoffs. However, we still have nine innings (maybe fewer if the weather has anything to say) of regular season ball today against the Orioles. The game is not of importance to either team really, but someone will add one last digit to their final win total for the season.

Elmer Rodríguez will be the Yankees’ starting pitcher for this one, though they will need a not-yet-announced roster move to activate (probably demoting someone like Alexander Cornielle, who was just brought up yesterday for the doubleheader). The Yankees have mostly used Rodríguez as a spot starter this season, giving a couple chances to the highly rated youngster. He’s had some solid moments, but he’s mostly been below average on the year.

As for Baltimore, Shane Baz will get the start on the mound for them. Baz has a league-leading 15 losses, but he has been right around average for the season with a 4.11 ERA and 3.63 FIP.

Here’s how to catch all of today’s season-ending action, and we hope you’ll come join us in the game thread. New York has already announced that the game will not start on time. There is also not yet a confirmed lineup for the Yankees.

Texas Rangers lineup for September 27, 2026

Knicks sign Tyler Nickel, Kevin McCullar Jr. to two-way contracts

Looking to shore up their roster ahead of Monday’s training camp, the Knicks have signed rookie Tyler Nickel and returning forward Kevin McCullar Jr. to two-way contracts. 

Nickel landed with the Knicks as the 47th overall pick in this year’s draft, and he was one of their biggest standouts during Summer League play.

The sharpshooting forward averaged 12.2 points over the five exhibition games, including a stellar showing in which he knocked down six threes off the bench against the Nets. 

That continued the success Nickel enjoyed throughout his collegiate career, including a stellar senior season in which he knocked down 110 three-pointers, good enough for second in the SEC. 

Nickel had reportedly been weighing whether he'd want to attempt a return to school, but he opted to begin his professional career with the Knicks instead. 

McCullar has spent the past two seasons with New York on two-way deals. 

He first landed with the club as the 56th pick in the 2024 Draft, and slowly but surely began working his way into the bottom of the rotation. 

The 6-foot-6 wing showed positives in spurts last season but only appeared in 21 games at the NBA-level, averaging just 2.4 points across 7.4 minutes per game. 

McCullar also produced 16.8 points, 6.2 assists, and 5.4 rebounds over 14 G League games. 

The Knicks have been carrying three open two-way slots all offseason, so after inking these two deals they have one more remaining on the eve of training camp.

Tyler Nickel and Kevin McCullar Jr. sign two-way contracts

Entering Sunday morning, the Knicks were the only team in basketball that had not filled one of their three two-way spots. Hell, they were the only team to have more than one open two-way spot, having all three of them open.

There’s no method or reason why it took this long, but the Knicks finally did it. They’ve filled two of their two-way spots by signing Tyler Nickel and Kevin McCullar Jr. on Sunday morning.

Nickel, selected No. 47 overall in this June’s draft, has been in a weird limbo all summer where nobody really knew what was going on.

Drafted out of Vanderbilt after previous stops at UNC and Virginia Tech, Nickel is a 6’8” three-point specialist who was one of college basketball’s best shooters in each of the last two seasons, shooting an even 40% on nearly seven attempts per game in his two years as a starter at Vandy. He showed that much with his electric play in Summer League.

It has been a question of what his role would be as a rookie. The Knicks’ second apron aversion made it impossible to realistically sign him to a standard contract, so it’s been assumed for several months that he would eventually ink a two-way contract, but that wasn’t always set in stone. The brief 5-in-5 injunction would’ve given Nickel a chance to return to college and cash in on bigger NIL checks, but that window closed after a few weeks due to the NCAA’s appeal.

With Nickel on a two-way, expect him to spend a lot of the year in Westchester, but also get a chance to show he can hoop at this level during the dog days of January and February, when the defending champs will be shorthanded for games and stretches.

While Nickel is an unknown in a Knicks uniform so far, we’ve seen McCullar plenty over the last two years.

The former No. 55 overall pick in 2024 out of Kansas, McCullar will be spending his third consecutive season on a two-way contract with the Knicks, hoping to show enough to earn a full-time roster spot by 2027-28.

Recurring knee injuries limited McCullar to four games as a rookie and just a few G League appearances, but he was healthy and effective when called upon in his second season, playing 21 games and putting together some strong individual performances, namely a 13-point masterpiece on December 27 in Atlanta.

He’s another guy who will get his ring in person on October 20, so that’s cool. He fits in a similar role to Nickel as a deep reserve wing who will compete with Pacome Dadiet to be the next man up if one of the key wings (starters + Mo Diawara) misses time.

This officially fills up the 21-man training camp roster, as big man N’Faly Dante (who’s recovering from an ACL tear) was signed to an Exhibit 10. Here’s the group:

When does NHL season start? What to know about 2026-27 season

The NHL's shortened preseason is over. Now the longer-than-usual regular season will get underway.

The 2026-27 NHL season was increased from 82 games to 84 in the collective-bargaining agreement so teams could play an even number of games against divisional opponents.

As a result, the season will open in September instead of its usual October starting date.

The first game will feature the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes raising their Stanley Cup banner before they play the Florida Panthers, who won back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025. The runner-up Vegas Golden Knights will also be in action on opening night, facing the Chicago Blackhawks.

NHL teams have until 5 p.m. ET on Monday, Sept. 28 to submit their opening-day rosters. They must be compliant with the $104 million salary cap.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are among the teams that were over on Saturday, but they should be OK after placing 11-year veteran Miles Wood on waivers. More players will go on waivers on Sunday.

The New York Islanders signed defenseman Logan Stanley to a one-year contract on Sunday.

Key dates during 2026-27 NHL season

Sept. 29: Opening night

Oct. 25: The Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens will play in the outdoor Heritage Classic at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.

Nov. 9: Patrice Bergeron, Carey Price, Pekka Rinne, Cindy Curley, Keith Tkachuk and Brian Burke will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Nov 12 and 14: The Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken will play in Helsinki, Finland.

Dec. 18 and 20: The Ottawa Senators and Blackhawks will play in Dusseldorf, Germany

Dec. 31: The Winter Classic will be held at University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The Utah Mammoth will host the Colorado Avalanche.

Feb. 5-6: The NHL All-Star weekend will held at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. The skills competition is on the 5th and the All-Star Game will be on the 6th. There are new formats this season.

March 1: NHL trade deadline is at 3 p.m. ET

April 10: The regular season ends with all 32 teams in action.

Orioles vs Yankees discussion

We made it, team. It’s the final game of the season. There is no denying that this has been a disappointing season for the Orioles. With a win today, they’ll finish at 80-82. I have seen a lot worse baseball than that over the years, but I don’t know that I’ve seen much more frustrating.

Shane Baz will get his final start of the season. His 4.11 ERA has been disappointing, but it’s an improvement over last year and he put in a full season. Today is his 32nd start of the year, which is tops on the team. His 179.2 IP is also the most. He has shown flashes of brilliance, enough that he’s the kind of pitcher you can dream on a bit. Like the entire pitching staff, he’s been the victim of poor defense, but he’s also been the victim of low run support. Hopefully today he goes out on a high note.

Starting for the Yankees is Elmer Rodríguez. He’s making his seventh start of the season and first since August 31st. He’s got a 5.40 ERA, 15 BB, and 21 K in 26.2 innings.

The Orioles are sending out about the best lineup they can for the final day of the season. For better or for worse, these have been our guys this year. I’d like to see them go out victors. Maybe with another home run from Pete Alonso?
