In Salford’s last regular Super League game of 2024, the coach Paul Rowley gave debuts to eight reserve players to protect his stars for the playoffs. None of them are likely to be on the field when their season begins at St Helens on Saturday evening. Their services may never be required in the top flight again. But, for one night only, they found themselves up against the world champions, live on national TV.

Dan Spencer-Tonks knows what that “for one night only” role feels like. Rowley did the same thing two years earlier, fielding six debutants against Warrington in the final regular round. Spencer-Tonks came off the bench for his only taste of Super League, earning membership of the one sub club. He has spent the last two seasons in the Championship and League One, his time at the top seemingly gone as rapidly as it arrived.

Duke gets right in blowout of Cal

Duke took a step forward defensively and did just enough everywhere else to cruise back into the victory column. The Blue Devils sailed past California 78-57 Wednesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, leading from start to finish in a blowout that never felt particularly close. Cooper Flagg scored 27 points, Tyrese Proctor added 18 and Khaman Maluach had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds as Duke put Saturday’s defeat at Clemson – its first ACC shortcoming – in the rearview mirror.

Donovan Dent scored 20 points and Jovan Milicevic secured the victory with a 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining as New Mexico took down Wyoming 71-67 on Wednesday night. Dent added six rebounds, seven assists, and three steals for the Lobos (21-4, 13-1 Mountain West Conference). Tru Washington scored 15 points while shooting 5 for 9 (2 for 4 from 3-point range) and 3 of 5 from the free-throw line and added three steals.

JT Toppin had a career-high 41 points and 15 rebounds as No. 12 Texas Tech outlasted Arizona State 111-106 in double overtime Wednesday night. Darrion Williams scored 27 for the Red Raiders, making a steal and two free throws with 1:49 left in the second OT to put them ahead to stay. Toppin added a dunk in the final minute off a pass from Williams, whose jumper with 25 seconds remaining in the first overtime made it 96-all.

Njie hits winner, Burton has career-high 32 points and Notre Dame edges Boston College 97-94 in 2OT

Kebba Njie scored the go-ahead basket with 16 seconds left in the second overtime, Markus Burton scored a career-high 32 points and Notre Dame outlasted Boston College 97-94 on Wednesday night. Dion Brown's layup with 1:20 left in the second overtime, gave the Eagles a 94-93 lead after they trailed by five earlier in the period. After Burton missed two free throws and Donald Hand Jr. missed a 3-pointer for Boston College, Njie's follow of a Burton miss put the Fighting Irish back up 95-94 though he missed the and-one free throw.
