Telfort scores 24, Butler takes down Providence 82-81

Jahmyl Telfort had 24 points in Butler's 82-81 victory over Providence on Saturday. Telfort added five rebounds and four steals for the Bulldogs (11-13, 4-9 Big East Conference). Pierre Brooks shot 7 for 14, including 2 for 5 from beyond the arc to add 18 points.

Kenny Noland added 13 points while shooting 5 for 16 (1 for 8 from 3-point range) and 2 of 4 from the free-throw line while they also had five assists. Thompson shot 4 of 9 from the field, including 0 for 4 from 3-point range, and went 3 for 3 from the foul line to finish with 11 points, while adding 16 rebounds. Noland made the first of two free throws to make it 72-all with 16 seconds left but missed the second.

Matt Rogers scores six of 27 points in OT to lead American University over Lehigh 78-75

Matt Rogers scored six of his 27 points in overtime to rally American University to a 78-75 victory over Lehigh on Saturday. Elijah Stephens hit a jumper six seconds into the extra period and Rogers followed with two free throws and a basket and the Eagles never trailed in the final five minutes. Rogers shot 11 for 18 from the floor and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line for the Eagles (15-10, 9-3 Patriot League).

Irish boxer John Cooney dies aged 28, one week after suffering injury in bout

The Irish boxer John Cooney has died, his promoter Mark Dunlop has announced, a week after he was injured in a fight in Belfast.

A statement on Monday said that the 28-year-old was in intensive care following his defeat to the Welshman Nathan Howells at the Ulster Hall last Saturday. The bout was stopped in the ninth round and Cooney had subsequently undergone surgery after it was discovered he had an intracranial haemorrhage. The bout was his first defence of the Celtic super-featherweight title.
