Somalia says it will never accept Ethiopian naval base in Somaliland

Somalia will never accept Ethiopia's plan to build a naval base in its breakaway region of Somaliland, but it would consider granting Ethiopia commercial port access if discussed bilaterally, Somalia's state minister for foreign affairs said on Friday. Landlocked Ethiopia sparked a diplomatic row with Mogadishu in January by signing a deal with Somaliland to lease 20 km (12 miles) of its coastline in return for recognising the region as an independent state. Somalia called the deal illegal as it considers Somaliland as part of its territory even though it has had effective autonomy since 1991.

TREASURIES-Treasury prices rise as geopolitical risks, poor bank results spur buying

Treasury prices rose on Friday as investors grappled with revised expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts after hot inflation readings this week and as geopolitical concerns spurred safe-haven buying. Boston Fed President Susan Collins said she's eyeing two rate cuts this year amid expectations it could take some time to get inflation back to policymakers' 2% target, adding her voice to other Fed officials who have recently pushed back on market views for a quick cut to interest rates. Collins' remarks followed a speech in which she said the U.S. central bank is likely to cut its policy rate at some point this year but that uncertainties and risks around inflation mean the Fed needs to take its time before doing so.

JPMorgan also added billions of dollars of loans to its balance sheet after acquiring failed First Republic Bank in May last year.

A top executive who left investment bank China International Capital Corp (CICC) is set to join sovereign wealth fund CIC to avoid a potential conflict of interest as his brother heads the securities regulator, six sources said. China has long vowed tougher discipline of leaders and officials, and the latest move comes against the backdrop of sweeping changes to top regulatory bodies made in recent years by President Xi Jinping so as to improve supervision. Wu Bo, most recently the president and CFO of state-owned CICC, is the younger brother of Wu Qing, who took the helm of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) in February, said the sources with knowledge of the matter.

Kharkiv’s civilians under fire as Ukraine faces ‘catastrophic’ air defence shortage

Kateryna Velnychuk was having an afternoon nap when an explosion shattered the windows of her ground-floor flat, spraying shrapnel that tore holes through her walls and cupboards. As Russia has intensified its air campaign against Ukraine in the last month, hammering its energy infrastructure and urban areas, no major city has been harder hit than Kharkiv. Just 30 km (18 miles) from the Russian border in northeast Ukraine, Kharkiv was already the most exposed to missile attacks and bombardment.

UPDATE 1-Visiting Chinese trade official warns EU on greentech probe

China's top trade official warned the European Union against protectionism on Friday, saying Beijing was puzzled by EU probes into green tech exports and the bloc's concerns they threaten the domestic solar panel, wind turbine and electric vehicle industries. Wang Wentao is traveling through Europe for discussions about the European Commission's investigation into whether China's electric vehicle industry has benefited from unfair subsidies. "We fail to understand how the EU commission carries the banner of sustainable and green development and then takes protectionist actions, thereby in effect generating more and more risks," Wang said during a trade and business conference in the northern Italian city of Verona.
