Does William Nylander Believe The Maple Leafs Can Return To Contention Next Season?

William Nylander, like most of the Toronto Maple Leafs' players during this last stretch of games, looks dejected.

It's a brand new situation for Nylander, who, like Auston Matthews and a few others on the team, hasn't experienced missing the playoffs in the NHL yet. As it stands, Toronto is 11 points out of a playoff spot, with 18 games remaining in its season.

They've also lost their last seven games coming out of the Olympic break. To put it into more of a perspective, though: Toronto has lost 13 of its last 16 games, dating back to Jan. 13 against the Utah Mammoth.

"I mean, hard to really stay optimistic in this situation," a down Nylander said on Tuesday, ahead of the Maple Leafs' game against the Montreal Canadiens. "But yeah, just try to get a win."

This year has been difficult for Nylander for a multitude of reasons.

He's missed 17 games this year due to a lingering groin injury. He lost out on a medal at the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, falling in the quarterfinals to his Maple Leafs teammate, Auston Matthews, and the United States.

(A positive is that, despite missing games, Nylander still leads the Maple Leafs with 21 goals and 59 points in 47 games this season.)

Now, for the first time in his career, Nylander's season will end in mid-April, while half of the NHL gears up for the postseason.

"At the beginning there, after the break, it was a lot of frustration and everything," Nylander continued.

"But now, I mean, it's not going to help being frustrated. I think the mood in the locker room has changed a little bit, and I think that's made it a better environment for everybody."

If there's any positive in this situation, it's that the Maple Leafs aren't too far off from being a playoff team once again. They've still got the core pieces, like a Matthews, a Nylander, a John Tavares.

Even Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper believes this season is a one-off for Toronto.

But what does Nylander think?

"I sure hope that's the case," he said. "Otherwise... yeah."

'Everyone's Almost A Target': Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies Reacts To Name Being In Trade Speculation'Everyone's Almost A Target': Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies Reacts To Name Being In Trade SpeculationKnies signed a six-year, $46.5 million contract with the Maple Leafs last June.

Matthews, after Monday's practice, said he sees a path back towards contention soon.

"Yeah, of course. I mean, I remember the Lightning missed the playoffs one year, and then the next year they're back at the top of the division competing. I look at a team like Boston this year that had a down year, and same thing, like they're in the mix," Toronto's captain said.

"Sometimes that happens, and we've been fortunate to be in the playoffs for the last nine years or so. And you kind of hope that it's a one-off and we can continue to build and continue to be in contention.

"Obviously, the focus is on right now and trying to get our game back and trying to get in the win column. But obviously, it's something you think about."

As mentioned, this is a unique situation for several Maple Leafs players. They've never been in this position, nor will they want to be in it again after this season.

Why The Maple Leafs Are Separating Auston Matthews And William Nylander Ahead Of Canadiens MatchupWhy The Maple Leafs Are Separating Auston Matthews And William Nylander Ahead Of Canadiens MatchupFollowing an 0-5-2 slump and an 11-game goalless drought for Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs are returning to familiar lineup combinations in hopes of igniting a stagnant offense.

However, you've got to attempt to finish the year on a positive note. While fans might want the team to get as close to the bottom of the standings for draft purposes, head coach Craig Berube and his players are likely looking in the opposite direction.

It's a difficult balance for a team. But battling through it is the only way to get back on track positively, says Berube.

"I mean, [Nylander has] always been in [the playoffs] and it's new for him, for sure. But, you know, every player and team goes through adversity at one point in their career, and this is some adversity that he's normally not used to. And like I said, he's got to work his way out of it."

J.T. Miller Slated To Return To Rangers' Lineup Sooner Rather Than Later

J.T Miller appears to be inching toward a return to the New York Rangers’ lineup.

The Rangers placed Miller on injured reserve on March 3 after a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets due to an upper-body injury.

It’s the second time Miller has missed time with an upper-body injury, but both injuries are reportedly not related and are entirely separate.

Mike Sullivan insinuated that Miller got hurt around the time he was hit in the head with a puck in the third period of the Rangers’ 5-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 2.

The 32-year-old forward returned to the ice for the first time on Tuesday for the Rangers’ morning skate ahead of their matchup against the Calgary Flames, wearing a red non-contact jersey.

“Pretty well,” Sullivan said about how Miller is progressing. “He's had a number of skates on his own with our skill guys. He joined the group today. Obviously, that suggests progress.”

Miller has missed the past three games, but he’s slated to shed his red non-contact jersey soon and hence return to the lineup, likely sometime in the coming games.

“We'll take each day as it comes, but I would anticipate sooner than later,” Sullivan said about whether Miller is close to shedding his non-contact jersey.

Miller’s appearance at the morning skate on Tuesday indicates that he could join the team on their road trip to Winnipeg and Minnesota this week.

Oilers vs Avalanche Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

We're in for a heavyweight tilt between the Edmonton Oilers and the Colorado Avalanche.

It’ll be the Connor McDavid vs. Nathan MacKinnon show in Denver tonight, but my Oilers vs. Avalanche predictions focus on Edmonton's captain.

Find out why in my NHL picks for March 10.

Oilers vs Avalanche prediction

Oilers vs Avalanche best bet: Connor McDavid Over 1.5 points (+100)

Connor McDavid is priced at +100 to go Over his posted total of 1.5 points tonight, a line he's eclipsed in five of his last six outings — averaging two points per game over that stretch.

The Colorado Avalanche's penalty kill has been sloppy of late, allowing at least one goal in six of their last seven games.

This should be an avenue where McDavid can get an edge on Colorado, as the Edmonton Oilers have an NHL-best power play operating at a 32.7% clip — and McDavid is leading the league with 43 power-play points.

Oilers vs Avalanche same-game parlay

This is a matchup of two offensive juggernauts with suspect goaltending. The Over is 7-1-2 in the Oilers’ last 10 games, and it's hit in three straight meetings between these two clubs.

Evan Bouchard leads all NHL blueliners with 73 points, 55 of which are assists. He’s recorded at least one helper in seven straight games.

Oilers vs Avalanche SGP

 • Connor McDavid Over 1.5 points
 • Evan Bouchard Over 0.5 assists
 • Over 6.5

Oilers vs Avalanche odds

 • Moneyline: Oilers +150 | Avalanche -175

Islanders vs Blues Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Want to get more Covers content? Add us as a preferred source on your Google account here.

Jordan Kyrou and the St. Louis Blues get set to host the New York Islanders this evening at Enterprise Center.

My Islanders vs. Blues predictions expect Kyrou’s shot volume to remain strong against a mid-tier shot suppression side.

Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for Tuesday, March 10.

Islanders vs Blues prediction

Islanders vs Blues best bet: Jordan Kyrou Over 2.5 shots (+100)

Jordan Kyrou has registered at least three shots in seven of his past 10 games, but the uptick in volume dates back further. It aligns with moving to a line with Jake Neighbours a few months back.

Kyrou has skated with Neighbours 20 times since December 1 and cleared 2.5 shots in 15 of them (75%). He was also within striking distance in three of the five Unders, landing on two shots in each.

The New York Islanders rank 23rd in shots allowed in the slot, and that’s where a lot of Kyrou’s volume comes from.

Islanders vs Blues same-game parlay

Tony DeAngelo has done a great job of generating shots from the point, particularly on the road.

He's averaged 2.7 shots on goal and gone Over 1.5 shots in 14 of his last 19 away games vs. teams outside the Top 10 in shot suppression. The St. Louis Blues also rank 29th in shots allowed to his primary shooting zone over their last 10.

The Blues have dropped seven of their past eight contests against Top 10 teams in limiting goals against. Led by all-world goaltender Ilya Sorokin, the Islanders sit fifth.

Islanders vs Blues SGP

 • Jordan Kyrou Over 2.5 shots
 • Tony DeAngelo Over 1.5 shots
 • Islanders moneyline

Islanders vs Blues odds

 • Moneyline: Islanders -120 | Blues +100
 • Puck Line: Islanders -1.5 (+205) | Blues +1.5 (-250)
 • Over/Under: Over 5.5 (-105) | Under 5.5 (-115)

Jordan Kyrou has averaged 3.4 shots on goal over his last seven home dates. Find more NHL betting trends for Islanders vs. Blues.

Tolopilo's Waiver Status Will Create A Complicated Situation For The Canucks During The 2026 Off-Season

The Vancouver Canucks are going to face some déjà vu in the 2026 off-season. Just like this past year, Vancouver could be forced to trade their young up-and-coming goaltender due to waiver issues. That goaltender is Nikita Tolopilo, who will no longer be waiver eligible once the 2026-27 season begins.

This situation may sound familiar, as it is the exact same one that the Canucks faced with Artūrs Šilovs during the 2025 off-season. The end result was that Vancouver traded Šilovs to the Pittsburgh Penguins instead of hoping he would not be claimed in the waiver system. Šilovs had just come off a Calder Cup championship and was dealt for forward Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.

According to PuckPedia, Tolopilo will no longer be eligible for waivers next season. This has to do with the age at which he signed and the number of years he has played in either the AHL or NHL. The 2025-26 season is Tolopilo's third with the organization and his second in which he has played NHL games.

While he has only played 13 games this year, Tolopilo has proven he can be at least a reliable goaltender in the NHL. This season, the 25-year-old has a 4-5-2 record with a save percentage of .899. Tolopilo has also played 19 games for Abbotsford, with a record of 8-8-3.

Why the Canucks may be forced to trade Tolopilo is due to No-Movement Clauses with both Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen. Demko's new contract kicks in on July 1, while Lankinen's No Movement Clause doesn't shift to a Modified No Trade Clause until 2027-28. Unless something changes before July 1, both Demko and Lankinen will be unmovable heading into the 2026-27 season.

While the off-season is still a few months away, potentially losing Tolopilo should be seen as a significant issue. Vancouver can not afford to lose another goaltender, as Tolopilo is more than likely to be claimed if put on waivers. Ultimately, the Canucks will need to get creative during the 2026 off-season if they want to keep Tolopilo in the organization.

Maple Leafs Call Up Marlies Leading Scorer Ahead Of Matchup Against Canadiens

MONTREAL — The Toronto Maple Leafs have called up forward Bo Groulx from the Toronto Marlies, the club announced Tuesday.

Currently on a seven-game losing streak (0-5-2), the Maple Leafs have indicated that at some point, they will start giving players with the Marlies more opportunities. Groulx leads the Marlies in scoring this season with 27 goals and 23 assists in 50 games.

A second-round draft pick (54th overall) by the Anaheim Ducks in 2018, Groulx played in 45 games with Anaheim last season, registering two assists.

The Leafs are short on center depth after trading Nicolas Roy to the Colorado Avalanche for a conditional first-round draft pick in 2027 and a conditional fifth-round pick and 2026. They also traded Scott Laughton to the Los Angeles Kings for a conditional third-round draft pick in 2026 that can become a second-rounder if the Kings make the playoffs this season.

At practice on Monday, Jacob Quillan was promoted to the third line center position, skating on a line with Easton Cowan and Nick Robertson. Toronto's fourth line consisted of Steven Lorentz centering a line with Dakota Joshua and Calle Jarnkrok.

It's not clear if Groulx, who was born in France but grew up in Quebec, will be inserted into the lineup against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.

The Leafs are scheduled to hold an optional morning skate, and head coach Craig Berube is expected to provide more clarity on the player's status.

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Want to get more Covers content? Add us as a preferred source on your Google account here.

The Montreal Canadiens welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Bell Centre for an Atlantic Division clash on Tuesday, March 10.

These two teams couldn’t be headed in more opposite directions, which is why my Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens predictions and NHL picks call for Montreal to pull away tonight.

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens prediction

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens best bet: Canadiens -1.5 (+140)

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reeling in a 4-11-4 stretch while allowing the most goals per game (4.26) and ranking 29th in Corsi For percentage (CF%) and 28th in expected goals percentage (xGF%)at 5-on-5.

This is a soft matchup for the Montreal Canadiens.

It hasn’t been all sunshine and roses for the Habs, with Montreal checking in 26th in CF% and 29th in xGF% at 5-on-5 during the same stretch.

However, the Canadiens have outscored their problems, ranking second in goals per game (4.06) and third in goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5.

Toronto won’t keep pace tonight.

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens same-game parlay

This is a favorable matchup for the Montreal offense, and Habs winger Cole Caufield has marked the scoresheet in four of his past five games to climb to a high-end 3.4 points per 60 minutes.

Defenseman Lane Hutson has recorded two or more shots in consecutive games. Add Hutson quarterbacking the No. 1 power-play unit against a Toronto side allowing the most shots per game (33.8) during the noted 19-game stretch, and I’m expecting the star blueliner to clear this total again.

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens SGP

 • Canadiens -1.5
 • Cole Caufield Over 0.5 points
 • Lane Hutson Over 1.5 shots

Maple Leafs vs Canadiens odds

 • Moneyline: Maple Leafs +145 | Canadiens -170
 • Puck Line: Maple Leafs +1.5 (-160) | Canadiens -1.5 (+140)
 • Over/Under: Over 6.5 (-120) | Under 6.5 (+100)

Islanders–Blues Matchup Features Brayden Schenn, Jonathan Drouin After Deadline Trade

The New York Islanders battle the St. Louis Blues for the first time since the two sides came together for one of the bigger trades of the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline.

On Friday, the Islanders acquired veteran centerman and Blues captain Brayden Schenn, sending Jonathan Drouin, the Colorado Avalanche's first-round pick, and the New Jersey Devils' third-round pick.

Schenn had spent close to 10 seasons in St. Louis, winning the Stanley Cup in 2018, and captaining them since 2023. He had to waive a 15-team modified no-trade clause to join Long Island and is wrapping up season six of an eight-year deal worth $6.5 million annually.

In his first game, a 2-1 overtime win against the San Jose Sharks, Schenn recorded one shot on three attempts, with one hit, one block, winning 43 percent of his draws (6-for-14) in 17:26 minutes.

Drouin, who had gone 38 games without a goal, scored in his first game with the Blues in a 4-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

The Islanders are looking to finish their four-game road trip on a good note, while the Blues are searching for their fifth straight win.

Ex-Flyers Forward Dominating the AHL

The Philadelphia Flyers only had him for a few months, but one of their recent trade acquisitions is quietly torching the AHL for another organization.

Remember when the Flyers shipped Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee off to the Calgary Flames for a second-round pick, seventh-round pick, Andrei Kuzmenko, and Jakob Pelletier?

They actually got a decent young prospect back in Pelletier, only to give him the smallest of chances in the lineup and ultimately let him walk as a free agent in the offseason.

Pelletier, 25, signed a three-year, $2.23 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an unqualified restricted free agent, accepting an unprecedented multi-year deal for the veteran minimum.

That was especially surprising, given that the 5-foot-9 sparkplug played a career-high 49 NHL games last season, scoring seven goals, 12 assists, and 19 points between the Flyers and Flames.

Flyers Letting Jakob Pelletier Go Was a Clear MistakeFlyers Letting Jakob Pelletier Go Was a Clear MistakeThe Philadelphia Flyers have lost one of their most effective players from the end of this past season in Jakob Pelletier for no good reason.

The Lightning, of course, are loaded and a Stanley Cup contender, so Pelletier has spent all but two games with the AHL Syracuse Crunch this season.

The result? Pelletier leads the entire league in scoring, amassing an astounding 22 goals, 39 assists, and 61 points in just 50 games with the Crunch.

The ex-Flyers forward has been at or near a point-per-game throughout his entire AHL career dating back to the 2021-22 season, so his production isn't overly surprising, but he's also clearly found another gear while playing for his third organization in two seasons.

As for the Flyers' AHL affiliates? The Lehigh Valley Phantoms have just two forwards with 30 or more points this season: journeymen Lane Pederson and Anthony Richard.

Flyers Forward Prospect Undergoes SurgeryFlyers Forward Prospect Undergoes SurgeryAfter losing a handful of forwards at the NHL trade deadline, the Philadelphia Flyers organization suffered another loss at the position through injury.

Even if the Flyers kept Pelletier just for NHL depth, he would have provided a massive boost for a struggling Phantoms team that has lost Alex Bump and Denver Barkey to NHL call-ups and Samu Tuomaala and Alexis Gendron to trades.

Instead, the Flyers have had to rely on the likes of Carl Grundstrom for that role, but after scoring seven times in December, including in four straight contests, the Swede's luck in front of goal has run out.

Grundstrom has just one goal and one assist in his last 22 games, and Pelletier continues to rip apart the AHL.

Did Barry Trotz Really Put Predators In 'Fantastic Spot' For New GM After Trade Deadline? | Column

The 11th hour is nearing closer and closer for Barry Trotz's time as Nashville Predators general manager.

In early February, he announced his intention to retire once a replacement was found, with a hoped-for deadline around the NHL Draft. The sudden shift in leadership prompted a handful of questions, including the impending NHL Trade Deadline.

Trotz said he wanted to set up his replacement in a "fantastic spot" when he departed, and the trade deadline was going to be a major part of that.

Now, with March 6 come and gone, it seems like Trotz was aiming for the new general manager to "choose their own adventure" rather than set up the Predators for a straightforward, successful run.

Instead of acquiring good players now, bundling trades and aiming to push the Predators into the 2026 postseason, Trotz opted to sell off role players for draft picks.

Four trades of active roster players brought back four picks and a bottom-six AHL defender, Christoffer Sedoff.

The Predator transaction receipt read almost like a "going out of business" sale, selling off quality pieces for little to nothing. The worst trade: sending Nick Blankenburg to the Colorado Avalanche for a single 2027 fifth-round pick.

Blankenburg had 21 points in 49 games this season with Nashville, averaging 17:57 minutes of ice time a game. The Predators ship off their second-most-productive defenseman for a pick that will likely end up in the minors.

There's a difference between building for the future and just selling off players to get rid of them. Trotz trading Blankenburg, a decent defenseman in a struggling defensive corps, shows that fixing the defense is going to be a task meant for the next GM.

Nashville's bottom six was nearly fully gutted, as Michael McCarron was traded to the Wild for a 2028 second-rounder, Cole Smith was traded to the Golden Knights for a 2028 3rd round pick, and Sedoff and Michael Butning were traded to the Stars for a 2026 3rd round pick.

There was also a rumor trending that Erik Haula was going to be traded to Seattle for...more picks. Trotz later confirmed there were "several good offers" on Haula, but the Predators eventually decided to keep him.

Trading for future considerations and not trying to weaponize now, not even a little bit, reads that management has given up on this season's version of the Predators. Still within striking distance of a Wild Card spot, Trotz left gaping holes in the roster with little intention to fully seal them.

Four call-ups from Milwaukee were made following the trades, and if the Predators players and coaches had anything to say about management's transactions, they said it in a 6-3 win over the Boston Bruins a day before the deadline.

The transactions made at the deadline make Trotz's statement about leaving the team in a "fantastic spot" a little vague. The new GM will have a lot of draft picks to work with, but has a current team that was on a playoff bubble that now feels like it's been popped.

With 19 games left in the regular season, it's not too late to make the playoffs, but Nashville is doing it without a chunk of the corps that helped them get there.

There's the other side of the argument that says, "This is just the next step in the rebuild." The issue with that is the Predators didn't get much in the draft.

The McCarron trade for a 2028 second-rounder was the biggest victory, but everything else really doesn't move the needle much for the Predators

Only six of the current Predators were drafted beyond the second round, and half of them weren't drafted by Nashville.

Selections by the Predators since the 2020 draft, from the third round on, have played a combined 71 games, and that's between two players: Adam Wilsby (68 games) and Ryan Ufko (3 games).

But maybe I'm being unfair and not giving prospects time to develop. Going back to the 2016 draft, Predators players drafted from Rounds 3 through six have played a combined 535 games.

That sounds a lot better, but breaking down, that's 49 players with only nine gaining NHL experience. Examining it even more closely, only two of those players are on the current Predators roster, one of whom, Ufko, was just called up.

Depending on what "fantastic" actually means, the new general manager will be faced with filling the gaps Trotz made.

The Stats Behind Game #64: Senators 2, Canucks 0

Welcome to this edition of the Vancouver Canucks post-game analytics report. This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on Vancouver’s most recent 2-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Monday was the definition of low-event hockey. The Senators won the even-strength scoring chances battle 19-4, while also claiming the even-strength high-danger scoring chances by a count of 7-6. In the end, the only goal scored on a goaltender was a fluke as both Kevin Lankinen and James Reimer were sharp in this one.

The heatmap shows just how low-event this game was. Neither team was able to generate consistent chances from inside the crease, with most shots coming from distance. While the defensive coverage was decent, the Canucks struggled to generate second-chance opportunities on Monday.

To wrap this game up, Curtis Douglas led the team in even-strength xGF% at 56.26%. Vancouver's newest forward logged 6:52 of even-strength ice time and won the shots battle 3-1. Douglas also threw four hits while playing a fourth-line role in his debut.

Then it’s back for a rematch with the Hurricanes in North Carolina next Wednesday.

Season stats
via hockeydb

 • Nicolas Deslauriers has yet to make his Hurricanes debut since his trade from the Philadelphia Flyers. If the Canes decide to slot him into the lineup Monday night, he would slot into their fourth line.
 • The Hurricanes have historically been a tough matchup for the Pens, but the Penguins could take some lessons from the Flames. Calgary got beaten on face-offs (52.5 percent to 47.5 percent) and 5-on-5 scoring chances (24 to 21) while holding strong on hits (26-20) and getting some nice saves from Dustin Wolf to claim a 5-4 win over the Canes on Saturday.

And now for the Pens

 • Jack St. Ivany is headed to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on a conditioning loan, per Seth Rorabaugh.
 • Justin Breazeau’s status is uncertain after he was sidelined against the Bruins on Sunday with a day-to-day upper-body injury.
 • Today should also lead to more information on whether Sidney Crosby is joining the team for the upcoming five-game road trip. Dane Muse said Sunday that decision would be made after the matchup against the Boston Bruins.
 • Evgeni Malkin is set to miss the third game of his five-game suspension tonight. He won’t be eligible to return until the Penguins rematch against the Hurricanes next week.
 • It’s a milestone game for Kyle Dubas, who has served as general manager for 600 career games, per Pens PR. A win tonight would tie him with Steve Yzerman for the 14th-most wins through that milestone with 326 victories.
