Doc Rivers pushes back against "unfair" criticism of blown 3-1 playoff series leads

Doc Rivers has coached 20 teams to the NBA playoffs, has won more postseason games than he has lost, has won a Coach of the Year award (2000), has a championship ring from the 2008 Boston Celtics, is about to pass Phil Jackson for seventh on the all-time coaching wins list, and was named among the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history by the league.

However, ask most fans about Rivers as a coach and the first thing that comes up is the three blown 3-1 leads in playoff series — he is the only coach in league history to blow multiple 3-1 leads in the postseason.

Rivers pushed back against that narrative, speaking to Andscape’s Marc J. Spears.

"It is what it is. It's part of my legacy. There's nothing I can do about it. I got a team that was an eight seed up 3-1. That is coaching. That is not bad coaching. The one with the Clippers is the only one that got away. But people don't realize that Chris Paul was running on one leg [in 2015 with the Clippers] and we were also the underdog in that series. When you think about it, Houston had home court, not us.

"No one tells a real story. And I'm fine with that. It's unfair in some ways. I don't get enough credit for getting the three wins. I get credit for losing. I always say, 'What if we had lost to Houston in six?' No one cares. One of the things that I'm proud of is we've never been swept. All the coaches have been swept in the playoffs. My teams achieve. A lot of them overachieve and I'm very proud of that."

Maybe the most famous of those blown leads was in the bubble in 2020, when Rivers coached a title contender in the Clippers who were up 3-1 on the Nuggets and lost.

"No, in the bubble, I had a group of guys that didn't want to be there. [Ex-Clippers guard] Lou Williams said [on a podcast in 2023], 'Look, we were trying to leave. We made the decision that we didn't want to be there.' So, I felt that... And what bugs me about the bubble is I couldn't get them to understand that we had a chance to win [a title]. That's what bugs me. They wanted to go home more than they wanted to win. And I still don't understand that."

Rivers isn't totally wrong — his teams are making the playoffs and often with good seeds. The first of those blown leads was in 2003 when he coached an eight-seed Orlando team against top-seeded Detroit, getting that team up 3-1 was impressive. The 2020 blown lead against Denver, on a Clippers team with two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, will always be the one that got away.

Rivers is a quality NBA coach, without question. Whether he gets the most out of his team and knows how to motivate them in the playoffs is a legitimate question, but he will get another chance to prove himself this season with a Bucks team with high expectations but maybe not the roster to live up to them. Can he get this team to overachieve?

And hold on to leads?

Expert picks & predictions for Tuesday’s Warriors vs. Heat game

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans Jimmy Butler to go Under 6.5 rebounds:

"Over the last 10 games, Butler averages 10.0 rebound chances per game and 6.4 of those converted and 7.4 converted on 11.4 potential boards in the past five outings. However, Miami is obviously his former team, so there will be more physicality in this game and potential for a blowout as well (in favor of Golden State). Butler recorded six or more rebounds in four straight games until four boards in the previous outing and 10-9 to the Under 6.5 rebounds since joining Golden State. I like Butler to go Under 6.5 boards at -105 odds."

Sean Miller takes over Texas men’s program looking for consistent March Madness success

Sean Miller beat Texas in the NCAA Tournament barely a week ago, bouncing the Longhorns out early and ensuring they would be making a coaching change. “I don't think I've ever been more excited in my life,” Miller said at his introductory news conference on campus. Miller also said it was hard to leave Xavier, a program where he coached twice, most notably when he returned there in 2022 after he was fired at Arizona.

NBA Owners Set to Vote on Proposed European League

NBA owners are set to vote this week on a plan to launch a pro basketball league in Europe, one that would help expand the sport’s presence across the continent and give the NBA a chance to share more directly in the economics of that growth.

League owners are considering a new league with eight to 10 franchises, according to someone directly familiar with the plans. It’s a “semi-open” proposal, the person said, meaning there would be up to four spots for the best teams in the EuroLeague—the continent’s top circuit with teams like Real Madrid in Spain and Greece’s Olympiacos—to compete in the NBA’s league the following year. The franchises in places like London or Paris could sell for at least $500 million, according to the proposal.

The league would sell the permanent franchise slots to outside investors, with the NBA holding 50% of the equity and franchise owners holding the other 50%, said the person, who was granted anonymity because the details are private. That’s a setup identical to the equity structure of the WNBA up until the league raised outside capital in 2022.

As it stands, NBA officials would prefer to sell those franchises to people outside of the league, the person said, meaning sovereign wealth funds, private capital, wealthy individuals or existing European basketball clubs.

NBA owners are set to vote on the proposal during league meetings this week in New York. A representatives for the NBA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. A rep for the Raine Group, which is advising the league on the matter, declined to comment.

The vote comes after more than a year of discussions about how the NBA might better optimize its business in Europe. The league has generated a few hundred million dollars annually from Europe in recent years, but interest on the continent is growing, as is the number of talented players. The NBA believes the basketball system in Europe and the Middle East could be worth as much as $3 billion in annual revenue, Sportico reported last year.

The NBA considered deeper partnerships with the EuroLeague and/or the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), including the possibility to utilizing the NBA’s marketing and commercial operations to assist the EuroLeague in selling sponsorships, Sportico previously reported. It also considered a more international competition beyond just Europe. Discussions about a new standalone league happened simultaneously.

Overseas opportunities have been a growing priority for the NBA over the last four decades, ever since the league did its first deal in China in the last 1980s. Despite the 2019 Hong Kong controversy, the league’s China endeavors have grown into a multibillion-dollar business. In 2021, the league launched the Basketball Africa League (BAL), operated in partnership by the NBA and FIBA. NBA Africa brought in strategic investors including a consortium led by Tunde Folawiyo, chairman of Yinka Folawiyo Group  and Helios Fairfax Partners, led by co-CEO Tope Lawani, for the NBA’s first standalone league outside of North America.

The NBA has played 40 regular-season games outside the U.S. and Canada, dating back to the 1990s, and dozens more preseason contests. It didn’t play regular season games in Europe until 2011, when it played in London. The league has held five regular-season games in France in the last few years.

There were 125 foreign-born players on NBA rosters at the start of this season, the highest total in league history. That includes 62 from Europe, including stars Nikola Jokić, Luka Dončić and Victor Wembanyama. The past six NBA MVPs were non-American; there were just four in league history prior to that.

New leagues are popping up seemingly weekly across virtually every sport, basketball included. This year was the first season of Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 women’s circuit in Florida that featured some of the WNBA’s biggest names. Bloombergreported in January that Maverick Carter, LeBron James’ business partner, was advising a group looking to raise $5 billion for an international basketball league to “rival the NBA.”

Stylistic versatility: Those left in the NCAA Tournament have proven they can win a lot of ways

Houston and Gonzaga met in a second-round NCAA Tournament matchup last weekend in Wichita, Kansas, that could as easily have been played in the Final Four, the way Kelvin Sampson's and Mark Few's teams had played throughout the season. The Cougars were No. 1 in scoring defense, more than a half-point better than the next-best team. The Bulldogs were No. 2 in scoring offense, trailing only Alabama in putting up nearly 87 points per game.

2025 NBA MVP race: Rankings, stats, analysis for Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Nikola Jokic, other top contenders

Look at the betting odds and one would think the NBA MVP race is over. According to BetMGM, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is -2000 to win his first MVP award this season, while defending MVP Nikola Jokic is second at +800.

From my vantage point, those odds make no sense. Every media member with a vote I have spoken to, or I have seen write on the MVP race, is torn (myself included). The margins in this race are razor-thin. It's a coin flip and there is no clear consensus. If anything, there seems to be a slight lean toward Jokic.

With just a few weeks left in the NBA season, let's break it down:

2025 NBA MVP Rankings:

1. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder

2. Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets

Ask me again in 48 hours and this order might change — it was flipped 48 hours ago.

Having Gilgeous-Alexander on top may be recency bias because I was in the Intuit Dome Sunday night when SGA and the Thunder played the Clippers — and he struggled, 7-of-29 shooting, 1-of-11 from 3. However, what impressed me was that he still impacted winning with his shot creation and dishing out eight assists, making a key deflection late, and having two blocked shots in clutch time — SGA's leadership was on display. He got them a win against a hot Clippers team (winners of 8-of-10) on a night he was cold and the Thunder were without their second and third best players (Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren).

That's what MVPs do.

To be fair, that's what Nikola Jokic does, too. He is averaging a triple-double this season — 29.1 points, 12.8 rebounds and 10.3 assists a game — and is having a better statistical season than any year he won the MVP. The compelling argument for Jokic is around the "valuable" part of MVP — Denver is not good when he is off the court. Jokic carries that team. We've seen some of that in the past week with Jokic out while dealing with an ankle issue, the Nuggets have a couple of wins but this team is not the same.

Jokic is a legit MVP. There's no shade here toward anyone who votes for him.

However, the argument that he drives winning more than SGA (or, at least, dramatically more) is flawed. First, Gilgeous-Alexander should not be faulted because Sam Presti did a great job of roster construction. Beyond that, SGA has more win shares per 48 minutes (he's 10th all-time in that category), and he's a better defender. Watch the Thunder and you can see how much he drives this team, he is the straw that stirs the drink on the best team in the league.

Also, I think this historical stat has weight: Ten times in NBA history the NBA's leading scorer was on a 60+ win team, something Gilgeous-Alexander will do this year. Nine of those players won MVP. The one that didn't was Michael Jordan in the 1996-97 season when voters gave it to Karl Malone, a case now seen as voter fatigue with Jordan.

All that said, I'll likely flip-flop my vote a few times before ballots are cast in April. This race is that close.

3. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

4. Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

This is the one spot on the ballot where there is confidence this is how the final vote will go down. I have former MVP Antetokounmpo as a relatively clear third and Celtics star Tatum as a clear fourth. Not that the gap between them is massive — it's not — but Antetokounmpo's slightly higher scoring (30.2 points a game, second in the league), slightly better defense and strength on the glass drive is more valuable in Milwaukee than Tatum's play is in Boston (as great as he is).

I imagine my final ballot will have these two in this order.

5. LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers

Much like the top of the MVP ladder, this fifth spot is undecided, except it is far more wide open. If I had to cast a ballot today I would vote for LeBron James, but there are two Cavaliers — Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley — who have a legitimate case for this last spot on the ballot.

Mitchell is the archetype of an MVP, the leading scorer and primary shot creator on the team with the best record in the East, averaging 23.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists a night. He's the guy most likely to win the fifth spot on the ballot because he checks a lot of boxes for what we expect in an MVP, and the Cavaliers should be rewarded for their season.

However, is he even the best player on his own team? Because of his elite defense and all around offensive game, I would select Evan Mobley before him. Mobley is averaging 18.6 points a game, grabbing 9.3 rebounds, shooting 37.2% from beyond the arc, and is likely to win Defensive Player of the Year. For my money, he is more valuable than Mitchell in Cleveland.

There is one other thing in Cleveland: With the Cavaliers, every night it feels like their best player is someone different — it's a strength of the team that they have that many ways to win, but it doesn't help an individual's MVP case.

LeBron's case, like Mobley's, is based more on his all-around game — except he's putting up better numbers. LeBron is averaging 24.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 8.5 assists a game.

My belief in LeBron for the fifth spot was strengthened by his recent groin injury — watching L.A. without him, it was evident how much he means beyond just scoring to the Lakers. He's the guy who makes the defense work, the glue on offense who can fill different roles depending on what the game calls for, and the guy who just lifts up the play of everyone around him.

LeBron (and the Lakers) have also struggled in the couple of games since his return, and if that continues this fifth-place vote will change.

Just missing the cut: Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Jalen Brunson (Knicks), Stephen Curry (Warriors), Jaren Jackson Jr. (Grizzlies).

Why Kerr views Butler's long-term Warriors fit as ‘easily sustainable'

Why Kerr views Butler's long-term Warriors fit as ‘easily sustainable' originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Although the Jimmy Butler era with the Warriors only is 20 games old, it’s safe to say it has been a success.

But that begs the question: Is it sustainable long-term?

Speaking to 95.7 The Game’s “Willard and Dibs,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr convincingly believes so.

“I think it’s easily sustainable because he loves to play basketball and he loves to win,” Kerr told Mark Willard and Dan Dibley. “And so, he fits right in with our guys and what we are trying to accomplish.”

Since joining the Warriors, Butler has been part of the team for 20 games, 16 of which ended in victory.

Out of the 20 games, the six-time All-Star has played 19 games, with only two negative plus/minus totals and averaging 17.3 points, 6.5 assists, 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals.

Butler has meant business, and his reaction to his lone injury absence against the Philadelphia 76ers in early March indicates his commitment to excellence.

“We lost the Philadelphia game a couple of weeks ago,” Kerr added. “He sat that game out. He had a back issue, and as soon as the game ended, he came over to me and told me, ‘Coach, I’m sorry. I hate losing. I can’t sit out anymore games.’

“I told him, ‘You got to stay healthy. If you have to sit out a game, you have to sit out a game.’ And Jimmy said, ‘No way, we can’t lose anymore.’ “

Initially viewed with some skepticism, the Warriors’ acquisition has resulted in a relative success, benefiting veteran stars Steph Curry and Draymond Green as much as Golden State’s young core.

Certainly, a playoff-motivated Warriors won’t complain about Butler’s undeniable grit and winning mentality.

“This guy is an amazing competitor, and he plays that way,” Kerr concluded. “But you don’t get to that level if you don’t love to play the game.

“He loves basketball. He loves being out on the floor, and it’s been fun to watch him.”

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Pistons to cover:

"San Antonio is playing some quality basketball, albeit it has come against bad teams or ones with injuries like the 76ers, Knicks, and Pelicans, a win is a win in the NBA. The Pistons are focused and playing well, climbing the ladder and it's hard to see a slipup against the Spurs. While the Spurs have been impressive, especially in their last game, that may set the public up to think this will be a close game. It's Pistons or pass."

Watch Heat honor Butler with tribute video before Warriors game

Watch Heat honor Butler with tribute video before Warriors game originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The Heat paid homage to their former star forward on Tuesday as Jimmy Butler made his highly anticipated return to Miami.

Butler, who was traded to the Warriors at last month’s NBA deadline, was introduced for the first time in six years on the opposing end. Before Heat PA announcer Michael Baiamonte belted Butler’s name, Miami honored the six-time NBA All-Star with a special tribute video.

Fans in attendance rose to their feet while the 40-second video montage played inside Kaseya Center. After Baiamonte shouted his iconic “Jim-my Butler” intro, fans cheered and gave Butler a warm welcome back.

Butler embraced the crowd right back, holding his arms to the crowd before the introductions carried over to the Heat side.

Over the past few days, Butler has downplayed the emotions of this game but openly expressed his gratitude to the fanbase and city.

Butler led an often undermanned Heat squad to five postseason trips and two NBA Finals appearances.

Even though things didn’t end the way both sides had hoped, it’s clear Butler still has a lot of love for Heat fans — and the feeling is mutual.
