Mark Sears scored 20 points as Alabama beat North Carolina 94-79 on Wednesday night in the ACC-SEC Challenge.

Coen Carr scored 12 points, Jaxon Kohler had a double-double and Michigan State led most of the way in a 90-72 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night in a Big Ten Conference opener. Carr shot 5 of 8 from the floor and Kohler scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Xavier Booker made three 3s and finished with 11 points for Michigan State, which shot 53% (29 of 55) and made 11 of 22 from long range.

UConn played its second consecutive game without leading scorer Alex Karaban as he recovers from a concussion.

Kansas trailed the entire way on Wednesday night en route to its first loss of the season.

Max Shulga scored 29 points and VCU beat Georgia Southern 89-54 on Wednesday night. Phillip Russell scored 17 points while going 4 of 9 from the floor, including 1 for 5 from 3-point range, and 8 for 8 from the line. Alphonzo Billups III had 14 points and went 5 of 8 from the field (4 for 5 from 3-point range).

Colin Smalls scored 26 points, including a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in regulation, and Matt Rogers had eight of his 18 points in overtime as American knocked off George Washington 81-71 on Wednesday night. Smalls shot 8 for 15 (5 for 9 from 3-point range) and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line for the Eagles (6-4). Rogers went 7 of 14 (4 for 8 from 3-point range) and added six rebounds.

PJ Haggerty had 23 points and seven steals as No. 16 Memphis put together a late burst to escape with an 81-71 victory over Louisiana Tech on Wednesday night. Tyrese Hunter added 20 points and Colby Rogers scored 13 for Memphis (7-1), which closed with an 18-8 run after the game was tied. Haggerty made all 12 of his free throws and added six assists and five rebounds.
