Top-ranked Auburn snaps back with an 80-68 win over Vanderbilt

Denver Jones scored 21 points as No. 1 Auburn held off Vanderbilt 80-68 on Tuesday night to avoid the Tigers' first losing skid of the season. Now Auburn (22-2, 10-1) goes into Saturday’s big showdown for the top of the Southeastern Conference standings, supremacy in the state of Alabama and the top of the AP Top 25. The Tigers came into Tuesday night tied with No. 2 Alabama in league play. Chaney Johnson finished with 20 points for Auburn, and Johni Broome had 17.

West Virginia on the wrong side of a back-and-forth affair in loss to BYU

It was back-and-forth all night long, with the intensity of an NCAA Tournament game, featuring five ties and 11 lead changes, but BYU prevailed in the end, earning a 73-69 win over the Mountaineers. With 2:39 to play, it seemed to present the most important three-minute stretch of the season for West Virginia. Trailing 68-67, the Mountaineers had the ball after they had just forced a shot clock violation.

Texas’ Madison Booker is AP women’s basketball player of the week

The sophomore wing had her fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a win over then-No. 2 South Carolina that ended the Gamecocks' 57-game regular season conference winning streak. Booker also had 20 points, six rebounds and four blocks in a win over Vanderbilt. The senior guard averaged 29 points per game in wins over then-No. 10 Duke and No. 22 Florida State.
