How Devers trade is ‘inspiring' Melvin, Giants in middle of season

How Devers trade is ‘inspiring' Melvin, Giants in middle of season originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO – About 24 hours before the Giants held an introductory press conference to celebrate the arrival of trade acquisition Rafael Devers, manager Bob Melvin already had a good feel for how well the three-time All-Star infielder would be welcomed by fans in the Bay Area.

Taking a walk near his home in downtown San Francisco, Melvin spoke with a few fans who excitedly shared their feelings about Devers with the Giants skipper.

“There was such a buzz, it was really cool,” Melvin said. “It was really inspiring to know that everybody’s following this closely and there’s an excitement to it. Can’t say enough good things about him and the quality of the acquisition that we got.”

Devers, a 28-year-old power-hitting infielder from the Dominican Republic, was obtained in a blockbuster trade from the Boston Red Sox that some are comparing to the deal that went down in the NBA when the Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in the middle of last season to obtain Luka Dončić.

The Giants’ deal for Devers isn’t on that level because San Francisco didn’t have to give up a star player in exchange. They shipped promising young pitcher Kyle Harrison along with veteran pitcher Jordan Hicks and a pair of prospects, James Tibbs III and Jose Bello, to the East Coast.

As part of the trade the Giants also agreed to pay the $250 million remaining on Devers’ contract that he initially signed with the Red Sox two seasons ago, a massive 10-year, $313.5 million deal through the 2033 MLB season.

Agreeing to that no doubt was a factor in negotiations, although Giants pitcher Justin Verlander seemed perfectly fine with it. Verlander has given up only one hit in 10 at-bats against Devers, the one hit being a home run in 2019.

“Been a fan from afar,” Verlander said. “Excited to add a player like that to our lineup.”

Devers’ departure from Boston came amid his frustrations that stemmed from the Red Sox consistently moving him around rather than allowing him to focus in one spot.

Traditionally a third baseman, Devers was moved to DH when Boston traded for Gold Glove winner Alex Bregman in the offseason, then was asked by team officials to change positions again after first baseman Triston Casas suffered a leg injury.

That isn’t expected to be an issue in San Francisco.

Melvin penciled Devers in as designated hitter batting in the No. 3 slot against the Cleveland Guardians at Oracle Park for Tuesday’s game. Dominic Smith is at first base while Wilmer Flores will begin the game on the bench.

Some combination of that trio will be used in future games, although Melvin was adamant that he has no designs on playing Devers at his normal third base, even with Matt Chapman and his Gold Glove on the injured list.

“I don’t want to move him around too much,” Melvin said. “He hasn’t played any defense this year. To put him at third for a couple weeks then move him over to first, DH him, I don’t think that’s a great idea. Casey [Schmitt] is good at third. We’re comfortable with that.

It helps that Devers is much more open and agreeable to the Giants’ plans for him as opposed to the mess he left behind in Boston.

He came in and said, ‘I’ll do whatever you ask me to do,’” Melvin said. “He couldn’t have been more all-in on whatever we need. I didn’t expect any different, I don’t know completely, nor do I care really [what happened with the Red Sox]. He’s here with us now, and he’s inspired to be here.

Devers’ arrival is expected to return immediate dividends, although Melvin envisions bigger and better production down the road as Devers settles in and other key players return from the IL.

“The offense has been better here recently, but this just makes us that much better,” Melvin said. “Having a guy in the middle of your order like that, it’s pretty extreme. Then when we get everybody back and healthy, it definitely lengthens the lineup for us.”

Devers' Oracle arrival leads to surreal day for Giants organization

Devers' Oracle arrival leads to surreal day for Giants organization originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO — The scene was a familiar one in a lot of ways, but also absolutely surreal.

When new Giants star Rafael Devers walked into Oracle Park, he was accompanied by smoke machines and a camera crew. Every video board around him, along with the $10 million scoreboard, included his face and a message welcoming him to a new city. The team officials who followed his every step had traded quarter-zips for suits and ties.

The press conference was held on the club level at Oracle Park in the exact same spot where, last year, the Giants introduced Buster Posey as president of baseball operations and Willy Adames as their shortstop and — briefly — the highest-paid player in franchise history. It was attended by dozens of reporters, some of whom had not covered a Giants game since Posey was in the squat. There also were multiple reporters who had flown in from Boston three days ahead of the Red Sox.

The scene, in many ways, resembled exactly what the Giants had planned for Carlos Correa two and a half years earlier. Except this time, it was another MLB All-Star coming over from the American League. And there was one other crucial detail that was different.

It was June 17.

A lot of Tuesday afternoon’s festivities at Oracle Park fit in with the way the Giants traditionally have welcomed their stars, but there was nothing normal about this. You’re not supposed to be able to acquire a hitter like Devers in June, and if you’re the Giants, you’re not really supposed to be able to acquire a hitter like him, period.

But there he was, sitting alongside Posey, with Barry Bonds watching from the front row.

“San Francisco Giants fans love great players,” Posey said in prepared remarks. “Great players have the ability to transcend generations, and Rafael Devers is one of those players.”

In introducing Devers, Posey talked of the organization’s Hall of Famers but also informal conversations that scouts often have. They try to figure out if a guy is a dude or “A Dude.” Devers, Posey said, is clearly in the camp of guys you build a franchise around.

“Rafael Devers is A Dude,” Posey said. “He’s been to the top, he has won it all, and we can’t wait to watch him help us bring a World Series back to San Francisco.”

Devers had one in Boston, but his run there ended poorly. The situation became so untenable earlier this season that the Red Sox were willing to play along with the Giants, who pushed for a resolution to talks well before others might get involved at the MLB trade deadline. The deal was finalized minutes before Sunday’s game at Dodger Stadium, and on Monday, Devers flew to San Francisco. A day later, he walked into the ballpark with a huge smile on his face.

The theme from Devers’ end was that he’s thrilled with how this all played out. He shrugged off questions about his time in Boston and the way it ended, saying his preference is to focus on what’s ahead. He told manager Bob Melvin that he’ll play anywhere after refusing to move to first base for Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Shortly after 4 p.m., he walked across the infield to take grounders at a new position.

All of it, every moment of his first day, included a crowd. The cameras surrounded the cage as he started taking BP, with Bonds coming out to take a glimpse and offer some advice. Devers plans to take advantage of that perk often.

“I went to say hi to him and then I got really nervous,” he told NBC Sports Bay Area. “I know that eventually I’ll get comfortable and I’ll start asking questions. He’s the greatest hitter in the big leagues so you have to take advantage and ask questions.”

Logan Webb, Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp lingered after their own workouts to watch Devers hit for the first time. Even after others had departed, Webb stood on the edge of the grass, a glove and football in his hand as he studied his new teammate.

It never looks like this at the ballpark on June 17, but this day became a celebration. The first question about Boston during the press conference was met with some booing from team employees who stood in packs at the back of the room. Devers’ more fan-friendly answers were met with applause, and when he skirted one question, some team employees cheered enthusiastically. At one point, an answer was interrupted by an excited team employee who was talking loudly on a balcony located a level above.

This certainly is what it would have looked and sounded like with Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge, although there was a key difference Tuesday. Because the transaction happened in-season, all of Devers’ new teammates took an elevator up to the club level to watch from tables set 50 feet from the stage.

The stage was exactly where the Giants once had expected to introduce Correa, and had that happened, none of Tuesday would have been possible. Devers sat behind a podium with owner Greg Johnson, Posey, general manager Zack Minasian and Melvin. The latter three almost certainly would not be in those positions had Correa passed his physical. The Giants ultimately committed about $100 million less to Devers than they had planned to with Correa.

In recent years, the Giants have held more huge press gatherings to hire and fire execs and managers than to introduce marquee players, but things are changing. Among that crowd on the club level sat Jung Hoo Lee, Willy Adames and Matt Chapman, all of whom have agreed to spend their primes hitting at Oracle Park.

Since the Bonds press conference three decades ago — likely the last for the Giants that had this sort of atmosphere — the organization has had trouble convincing stars to play in San Francisco. Devers had no choice because it was a trade, but that didn’t matter at all Tuesday.

The surreal day for the organization was his first as a Giant, and it wasn’t hard to read his emotions about all that has happened. After 72 hours that reshaped two franchises and altered the course of his career, Devers was all smiles.

“It was really crazy, it happened so fast,” Devers said. “I’m just happy to be here.”

Devers drops hilarious one-liner on how Bonds can impact him

Devers drops hilarious one-liner on how Bonds can impact him originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Rafael Devers had a funny comment when asked about how Giants legend Barry Bonds can impact his hitting ability.

After a whirlwind weekend that saw him get traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Giants, Devers arrived in San Francisco on Tuesday for his introductory press conference.

The newest member of the orange and black was asked about Bonds, another left-handed power hitter, with Devers delivering a hilarious one-liner.

“I think just looking at him, my game has already improved a lot,” Devers jokingly told reporters through Giants interpreter Erwin Higueros.

The 28-year-old’s arrival comes during a crucial point in the season for the Giants, who have struggled to produce runs this season. The lack of offensive production necessitated a significant move by Buster Posey and the front office.

When it became clear that Devers and the Red Sox were on the outs, the Giants pounced, sending pitchers Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison and prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello to Boston for the slugger.

San Francisco’s first-year president of baseball operations knows the impact someone like Bonds can have on the organization.

“When you have a guy like Barry Bonds around, arguably the greatest hitter of all time, it’s an added benefit for sure,” Posey told reporters. “I want to also point out that we have the utmost confidence in [hitting coaches] Pat Burrell, [Oscar Bernard] and [Damon Minor] and the work that they’re doing. I’ve had conversations with Barry since spring training and they’re on the same page, which is nice. I think they’re all speaking the same language and they’re very much in alignment.”

Left-handed power hitters are well-suited for the dimensions of Oracle Park, though the Giants have lacked a lefty slugger since Bonds retired after the 2007 MLB season.

Bonds remains the only left-handed hitter in franchise history to record 13 or more home runs in a season at Oracle Park, a stat Devers is hoping to change this season and beyond.

The 28-year-old hit .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI in 73 games for the Red Sox during the 2025 MLB season and is expected to be the designated hitter for the Giants, though he eventually will play first base this season.

The Giants are in contention for the National League West division title, thanks to a stellar starting pitching rotation and bullpen. Offensively, it has been another story, with San Francisco ranking 24th in batting average and 14th in runs scored.

The hope is that Devers can follow in the footsteps of Bonds and become a fearsome home run machine.

All eyes will be on Devers as he makes his debut against the Cleveland Guardians at Oracle Park on Tuesday, with fans hoping he launches the first of many dingers.

Red Sox baseball boss Craig Breslow says Rafael Devers trade does not mean ‘waving of the white flag on 2025'

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox thought they would be better off with a happy clubhouse than a disgruntled Rafael Devers.

A day after trading their erstwhile third baseman to the San Francisco Giants, Red Sox President Sam Kennedy told reporters that Devers’ refusal to change positions made it untenable for him to remain with the team.

“In terms of what was missing, it just was that alignment in terms of what we felt we needed from him that would be in the absolute best interest of the ballclub,” Kennedy said. “That’s a non-starter for us. We have to have that. We couldn’t get there. … So we made the decision that we made.”

Less than two years after signing Devers to a 10-year, $313.5 million contract, the Red Sox sent him to the San Francisco Giants for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison and a pair of prospects. The deal came on the day Boston earned a fifth straight win and completed a three-game sweep of the rival New York Yankees — a rare cause for excitement this season.

“It was a shock for sure after the run that we just had this past week,” pitcher Garrett Crochet said in Seattle before a game against the Mariners. “There’s a lot of season ahead of us. So, it’s really just keeping your eyes forward and knowing that there’s still work to be done.”

Asked what the move means for this year’s team, closer Aroldis Chapman said: “I don’t know. I don’t really know.”

Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow acknowledged on the conference call that the deal leaves a hole in the lineup, but he hoped it would pay off this season. Although there is a newly created need for a power hitter, the team now has roster and payroll flexibility to add players at the trade deadline, he said.

“It’s important to point out that this is in no way signifying a waving of the white flag on 2025,” he said. “We are as committed as we were six months ago to putting a winning team on the field, to competing for the division and making a deep postseason run.”

Devers, a homegrown three-time All-Star, joined Ted Williams as the only Red Sox players with multiple 30-homer seasons before turning 25. But the slugger’s relationship with the team soured when it signed Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman in February. Devers, who led the league in errors by a third baseman in each of the last seven seasons, balked at moving to designated hitter and then refused to play either first or third when Bregman and first baseman Triston Casas both got injured.

“We have a responsibility to do everything we can to improve the club. And we felt we were doing that by bringing Alex Bregman to the Red Sox,” Kennedy said. “And we have a responsibility, ironically, to every single player in that clubhouse to do everything in our power to improve the club. So it was something that we were committed to doing. And I do not regret that for one minute.”

But they lost Devers in the process.

“We worked at it. We had a different vision for him going forward than he had, and we couldn’t get there. We couldn’t find alignment,” Kennedy said. “And we reached that inflection point and made the decision to make a big move.”

The move came as a shock to Red Sox fans still salty over the salary dump of Mookie Betts in February 2020 — after he won the 2018 AL MVP award — in a trade that yielded little in return. The team also let Xander Bogaerts leave as a free agent before deciding Devers was the player they were willing to invest in.

Now, just one full season later, he’s gone, too.

“There’s some reasons that it didn’t work out,” manager Alex Cora said. “But the last few months hasn’t been easy. We made decisions in the offseason. Circumstances changed in the last month and that’s the business decision we made as an organization. Now Raffy is going to be with the Giants and like I said, we have to turn the page and be ready for this team.”

Breslow insisted the deal was not an attempt to cut payroll — like the deals for Betts, who went on to win two World Series in Los Angeles, or Chris Sale, who won the NL Cy Young Award in his first season with the Braves. The baseball boss acknowledged he second-guessed himself over how he handled the Bregman signing, which caught Devers by surprise, and the attempts to get the 28-year-old All-Star to change positions.

“I think about that question all of the time,” Breslow said. “This is not the outcome that we had expected. And it’s forced me to reflect on the interactions that I’ve had, not just with Raffy, but with other players and opportunities to communicate differently.”

The Red Sox winning streak has come with Bregman and outfielder Wilyer Abreu sidelined, joining Casas and outfielder Masataka Yoshida on the injured list. In their place, the team has relied on callups like Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and top prospect Roman Anthony, who made his major league debut to much hype.

Breslow said the front office will continue to look for ways to improve the team, with a middle-of-the-lineup hitter a new need.

“For some reason, this team (is) an example where the whole was not greater than the sum of the parts,” he said. “And being great teammates and sacrificing and stepping up for each other and embodying this shared vision, we believe that those are principles that we need to be faithful to.

“And so, at the end of the season, I think we could look back and say we’ve won more games than we otherwise would have,” he said, “because of the way that this roster is now able to come together.”

How Rafael Devers eventually playing first for Giants impacts Bryce Eldridge

How Rafael Devers eventually playing first for Giants impacts Bryce Eldridge originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

With Giants manager Bob Melvin telling reporters Tuesday that Rafael Devers eventually will play first base in San Francisco this season, the focus naturally turns to the organization’s top prospect, first baseman Bryce Eldridge.

The 20-year-old Eldridge already is at Triple-A and could be in the big leagues as early as September, if his development progresses properly.

But with Devers joining Wilmer Flores and Dominic Smith in the first base mix at some point this season, president of baseball operations Buster Posey was asked about what it all means for Eldridge.

“I see his development path as the same,” Posey said during Devers’ introductory press conference Tuesday at Oracle Park. “He’s going to keep playing first, keep developing at the plate. It’s a conversation Raffy and I have had already about Bryce and the future we potentially see him having. Par for the course for him, going forward.”

Eldridge, the Giants’ 2023 first-round draft pick (No. 16 overall), is skyrocketing through the minor leagues and is knocking on the big-league door.

Eldridge began the 2025 minor-league season at Double-A Richmond and hit .280/.350/.512 with seven homers and 20 RBI in 34 games. Those numbers earned him a promotion to Sacramento, where he is hitting .143/.213/.286 with two homers and nine RBI in 11 games.

Before the Giants signed Smith and designated LaMonte Wade Jr. for assignment on June 4, some fans wondered if Eldridge’s stay at Triple-A might be short.

But Smith has fit in well with the Giants, and now Devers will learn to field a position he never has played as a professional.

So, while there is excitement surrounding Eldridge’s eventual arrival, the Giants have three options on the 26-man roster, so they don’t have to rush their top prospect’s development.

Where Devers will play for Giants as he adjusts to new team

Where Devers will play for Giants as he adjusts to new team originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

There were plenty of questions about where Rafael Devers would play after being traded to the Giants, and manager Bob Melvin answered those during the slugger’s introductory press conference on Tuesday at Oracle Park.

“Yeah, we talked to [Devers] a little bit today and, like he said, he goes, ‘I’ll play wherever you want me to play. I’ll hit wherever you want me to hit.’ So that’s how it started,” Melvin told reporters. “He’s going to DH [Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians]. He’s going to hit in the three spot.

“We’re going to work with him and get him some ground balls at first and make sure he’s comfortable before we put him over there, and that’s pretty much the way we look at it right now — little bit of DH and a little bit of first.”

Devers hasn’t played in the field yet during the 2025 MLB season after losing his third-base job to Alex Bregman in Boston and then refusing to play first base for the Red Sox, smashing 15 home runs so far this year as his former team’s DH. But he said Tuesday he’s willing to do anything Melvin asks of him and is excited to do whatever it takes to help San Francisco win.

“I love the welcome that I got by my teammates,” Devers told reporters through Giants interpreter Erwin Higueros. “I feel really good — that really motivates me, and everybody I have talked to so far, they always talk about winning, winning, winning, so that’s another motivation for myself. …

“I can’t wait to start playing [at first base] … I’m eager to go out there and go play and see what I can do.”

Devers will have plenty of help transitioning to his new role at first base, one that he never has played in his entire professional baseball career. Melvin said Giants first base coach Mark Hallberg and third base coach Matt Williams, both former MLB infielders, will work with Devers, and there are plenty of San Francisco legends around the ballpark to lend their advice.

“We have guys around all the time,” Melvin told reporters. “Will Clark loves doing it… J.T. [Snow] was in spring training. We have plenty of guys to be able to have a resource over at first base. Look, if you can play third, you can play first, and [Devers has] done a great job at third before.

“So I don’t think it’s going to be too difficult for him, but I think more than anything the fact that he hasn’t played in the field this year, we have to take our time working him in. It’s a new position, so we’ll take it day to day.”

Devers eventually will be San Francisco’s everyday first baseman. But until then, he’ll contribute the best way he knows how — with his bat.

David Ortiz weighs in on what went wrong for Rafael Devers in Boston

David Ortiz weighs in on what went wrong for Rafael Devers in Boston originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz doesn’t seem surprised that Rafael Devers’ tenure with the organization ended poorly.

Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants amid a tumultuous season in Boston. As the Red Sox front office put it on Monday, the two sides couldn’t “find alignment” after months of disagreements over position changes.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Ortiz cited poor communication as one of the main reasons for the messy divorce.

“I know the communication between Devers and the Red Sox wasn’t the best at the very beginning,” Ortiz told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. “But at some point, you have to realize the organization has the power over everyone. They can play you, trade you, let you go. Sometimes, as a young player, it’s hard to understand that. But they have the power to do whatever they want. The only thing you can control is what you do on the field.”

Even Ortiz, a Dominican Republic native, struggled to communicate with his fellow countryman. He often tried to reach out to Devers and offer advice, but was unsuccessful, according to Dominican baseball insider Hector Gomez.

“You can’t imagine how many times I wrote to Devers trying to give him advice, but unfortunately, he has communication problems,” Ortiz said, per Gomez. “He almost never returned my messages, but I don’t blame him. He’s a good guy, but he definitely needs to improve his communication. He should find an advisor to help him with that.”

Ortiz’s illustrious Red Sox career certainly wasn’t drama-free. The three-time World Series champion clashed with the organization on multiple occasions due to contract disputes and disagreements with team management.

The difference from Devers’ situation? According to Ortiz, it’s “maturity.”

“I played for the Red Sox a long time,” Ortiz told The Athletic. “You think everything with me and the Red Sox was roses and flowers? I went through some tough times also. But I was mature enough to understand and keep things internal. Even in the best families, between the best brothers, s— happens. You need to have the maturity to resolve the problems and move on.”

Devers’ relationship with the Red Sox worsened when he was asked to take over for the injured Triston Casas at first base. His outright refusal prompted chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, team president/CEO Sam Kennedy, and owner John Henry to meet him in Kansas City for a face-to-face conversation.

One could surmise that Devers’ $313.5 million contract and the responsibilities that come with it were brought up during that discussion. Ultimately, Devers didn’t acquiesce, and that resulted in his untimely departure.

“The organization is always going to be there. Players come and go. As a player, sometimes you’ve got to put your ego aside and understand that once you get paid, you’ve got to find a way to do what you’re told,” Ortiz told The Athletic. “That’s a message for all young players who think they turn out to be bigger than the game. I’m not saying that Devers was like that. He’s humble. He’s a good kid. But sometimes when you’re young and immature, you (don’t realize that).

“I’m not saying the Red Sox did everything right. But you have to give the club the benefit of the doubt. They’re not trying to make the organization look bad. They’re trying to make good moves that sometimes they don’t have the opportunity to explain.”

Devers is expected to make his Giants debut Tuesday night against the Cleveland Guardians. His first game against his former team is scheduled for Friday, when the Red Sox begin a three-game series against the Giants in San Francisco.

Sandoval states Devers can benefit from hitting at Oracle Park

Sandoval states Devers can benefit from hitting at Oracle Park originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Giants legend Pablo Sandoval believes newly acquired slugger Rafael Devers is well-suited to the dimensions of Oracle Park.

Sandoval, who was teammates with Devers on the Boston Red Sox in 2017, believes the slugger’s hitting style will work better in San Francisco than in Fenway Park.

“For me, it was harder hitting the ball in Fenway [Park],” Sandoval told Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher Tuesday on KNBR’s “Murph & Markus.” “Because the right field is 300-something [feet] and then it goes to 390-something, then 420 in center field. The dimensions for Devers’ pull side are tough in Boston. So, I think the dimensions that Oracle Park has is going to help Devers.”

Devers was moved from Boston to San Francisco in a shocking trade on Father’s Day, giving the Giants a proven power hitter. Still, the unique dimensions of Oracle Park, along with the constant cold temperatures, wind and fog, make it a difficult place for hitters.

Left-handed hitters like Devers tend to fare better in San Francisco when it comes to hitting home runs, but it has been decades since Barry Bonds was launching longballs into McCovey Cove. Bonds remains the only left-handed hitter in franchise history to record 13 or more home runs in a season at Oracle Park.

The 28-year-old hit .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI in 73 games for the Red Sox during the 2025 MLB season and is expected to be the designated hitter for the Giants. Before the trade, San Francisco’s home run leader was Matt Chapman with 12.

With San Francisco in the hunt for the National League West division title, the lack of offensive firepower over the last month became too glaring to leave unaddressed. The hope is that Devers will add a steady bat to the lineup and come through in clutch moments, as he has done throughout his career.

All eyes will be on Devers as he makes his debut against the Cleveland Guardians at Oracle Park on Tuesday, with fans hoping he launches the first of many Splash Hits.

Ohtani’s Dodger Blue Mound Debut Ends With an LA Victory

Shohei Ohtani made his first Major League Baseball pitching start in 663 days and his first ever for the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

The outing lasted just an inning; he threw 28 pitches and allowed a run on two hits while throwing a costly wild pitch. After that, Ohtani returned to his usual role as designated hitter, with the Dodgers winning 6-3 against the San Diego Padres.

Ohtani’s pitches were clocked in the high 90s, with two either barely making or exceeding 100 mph. He went to a full count on three of the first four batters he faced, throwing only 16 strikes.

“I’m not very happy with the results, but I’m very grateful that I’m out here and pitching again,” Ohtani said through his interpreter after the game.

After struggling in his return to the mound, Ohtani mopped off the sweat, donned his batting equipment and led off as usual for the Dodgers in the bottom of the first. He stuck out swinging on a full-count pitch from Padres starter Dylan Cease.

“I saw it from the other side, from afar, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game. “So now, I think I got the best seat in the house to watch this guy start and then take an at-bat. This is bananas.”

For the Angels, Ohtani hit and pitched in 71 games, batting .284 with 13 homers, 13 doubles and three triples. Later in Monday night’s game he added to those numbers, turning the tables twice on Cease, doubling home a run in the third and singling in another during a five-run Dodgers fourth that decided the game.

He was 2-for-4 on the night with the two RBIs and a walk. Roberts said he had spoken to Ohtani about leading off after pitching the top of the first.

“I ran it by him, and he said, ‘No problem. I’m good with it,’” Roberts said. “I haven’t really dug into the archives when he was a two-way player with the Angels. I think there were times when he did hit leadoff. I don’t think it really affects him.”

On the mound, he acted as an opener in what turned out to be just another in a series of bullpen games for a Dodgers team that has 14 pitchers currently on the injured list, eight of them starters. On Monday night, Los Angeles used seven pitchers.

The road to recovery from his second elbow surgery was a long one for the Japanese native, who has won back-to-back league MVPs—one in the American League for the Angels in 2023 and another in the National League hitting only for Dodgers last season.

He won the World Series with the Dodgers last fall after signing a 10-year, $700 million contract as a free agent, with $680 million of it deferred.

The real question is where the Dodgers plan to go with Ohtani from here. It was the 87th pitching start of his eight-year career, but first since Aug. 23, 2023.

“I think it’s just seeing how each outing goes and whatever that looks like,” Dodgers general manager Barndon Gomes said. “The main goal is obviously to have him strong down the stretch run and through October. We won’t know that from here to there, but I do know at each step we’ll have those discussions and make sure that that is the guiding light, to make sure that he’s feeling as good as possible come October.”
