Dobbins addresses report he made false claims about dad's past with Yankees

Dobbins addresses report he made false claims about dad's past with Yankees originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Hunter Dobbins found a bizarre way to insert himself into the storied Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees rivalry.

Before his Sunday start in the Bronx, Dobbins told the Boston Herald he would retire before playing for the Yankees. The rookie right-hander backed up his trash talk by leading the Red Sox to an 11-7 victory.

Where the story took an odd turn, however, is when Dobbins told the Herald that his father, Lance, was drafted by the Yankees twice and later traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also claimed his dad and Yankees great Andy Pettitte were “really good friends.”

A New York Post report seemingly debunked Dobbins’ claims about his father, stating that Lance Dobbins does not appear as a Yankees draft pick for any season on Baseball Reference and that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has no recollection of the Yankees ever drafting him. Pettitte told The Post’s Joel Sherman that he doesn’t remember a Lance Dobbins.

That report has since made many headlines across Major League Baseball, and it left Dobbins addressing his alleged false claims before Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“The whole back story, it was stuff that I had heard growing up and seen pictures of, from my dad,” Dobbins said. “At the end of the day, it’s just from my dad and what I kind of grew my love for the game. At the end of the day, I don’t go fact-check my dad or anything like that.”

Has Dobbins spoken to his father about the issue?

“A little bit, not really,” Dobbins answered. “My whole focus is on Saturday, getting ready to face the Yankees. This is my first time in the big leagues facing a team a second time, let alone back-to-back. So that’s where my focus is, 100 percent. I imagine we’ll talk in the future or something like that. It’s been a bigger deal than it really needed to be.”

It’s a bizarre story all around, but it shouldn’t affect the 25-year-old when he takes the mound on Saturday. The heckles should be minimal as he’ll take on the first-place Yankees at Fenway Park.

Dobbins has a 4.20 ERA and 1.28 WHIP through his first 10 MLB appearances.

Betts, Merrill believe Giants fans are ‘mean people' of MLB

Betts, Merrill believe Giants fans are ‘mean people' of MLB originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Giants fans are some of the meanest in MLB?

That’s what San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill had to say when he joined the “On Base with Mookie Betts” podcast this week.

“San Fran got some mean people out there.” Merrill told the Los Angeles Dodgers’ superstar.

“That could be because of the rivalry,” Betts responded while agreeing with Merrill. “San Fran have mean people out there.”

Betts also went on to compare the Padres-Giants disdain with that of the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees rivalry, which the 32-year-old was a part of for his first six seasons before being traded to the Dodgers in 2020.

Merrill, who’s on his way to becoming a superstar in his own right with the Padres, is batting .304 this season and has helped carry the team to a 38-29 record which currently places them third in the rugged NL West.

“People say Wrigley and Yankees Stadium is bad,” Merrill added. “Bro, San Fran is like, San Fran is worse.”

Merrill has a career .281 average against the Giants, but batted a scalding .455 last season at Oracle Park. This season in four games, however, he’s posted just a .167 batting average in San Francisco.

Maybe the heat from Giants fans is affecting the 22-year-old.

How Nick Pivetta, other ex-Red Sox have fared so far in 2025

How Nick Pivetta, other ex-Red Sox have fared so far in 2025 originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

With the Boston Red Sox struggling just to get back to .500, it’s a good time to check in on their exs. Are there any recent breakups they should regret?

Given the Red Sox rotation’s struggles this season, they probably wish they still had someone like Nick Pivetta, Nathan Eovaldi, or Michael Wacha. All three veteran pitchers have been outstanding with their new teams and would likely be the No. 2 starter on Boston’s current staff.

Who else has made a positive impact on their new club? Here’s a roundup of ex-Red Sox and their performances so far in 2025:

Nick Pivetta, San Diego Padres, RHP

For the most part, Pivetta has thrived with his new club out west. The 32-year-old has a 3.48 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 79 strikeouts and 21 walks over 13 starts (72.1 innings) with the Padres.

Pivetta entered June with a sub-3.00 ERA but has struggled in his last two starts, allowing nine runs in 10 innings of work against the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. Still, the struggling Red Sox rotation certainly could use Pivetta’s production right about now.

Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers, RHP

Eovaldi remains “the one that got away” for the Red Sox. The 2018 World Series champion has been among the best pitchers in the league so far this season with Texas, amassing a 1.56 ERA and MLB-best 0.81 WHIP with 73 strikeouts and 10 walks through 12 outings (69.1 IP).

Unfortunately for the Rangers, Eovaldi was placed on the injured list with posterior elbow inflammation after leaving his May 27 start with tricep tightness. The 35-year-old is scheduled to throw a bullpen this weekend, but his return timetable is uncertain.

Michael Wacha, Kansas City Royals, RHP

Wacha has been Mr. Consistency since 2022, his lone season in Boston. The 33-year-old veteran shined with the Padres in 2023 and has been rock-solid with the Royals the last two years.

Through 13 starts this season, Wacha has posted a 3.01 ERA and 1.165 WHIP with 55 strikeouts and 19 walks in 74.2 innings. Another arm the 2025 Red Sox wouldn’t mind having in its inconsistent rotation.

Quinn Priester, Milwaukee Brewers, RHP

The Red Sox sent their 2024 trade deadline addition to the Brewers in exchange for minor league outfielder Yophery Rodriguez in April. A former top prospect, Priester appears to have unlocked something in Milwaukee.

Priester has a 3.65 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 43 strikeouts and 26 walks in 12 appearances (61.2 innings) this season. The command has been inconsistent, but the 24-year-old’s last four starts have been impressive. He has allowed only five runs through 23 innings in that span.

Chris Martin, Texas Rangers, RHP

Martin was lights-out for most of his tenure in Boston, and he hasn’t missed a beat in Texas. The 39-year-old has a 1.74 ERA and 0.87 WHIP through 23 appearances out of the Rangers’ bullpen.

Kenley Jansen, Los Angeles Angels, RHP

Jansen took care of business in his two appearances against Boston earlier this month, but it has been a somewhat rocky season for the likely Hall of Famer. In 25 appearances with the Angels, the 37-year-old has compiled a 4.37 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He seems to have found his groove so far in June, however, with only one earned run over six appearances.

Tyler O’Neill, Baltimore Orioles, OF

O’Neill put up big power numbers for the Red Sox last season, but it’s been a struggle for him in Baltimore. The 29-year-old is hitting .188 with only two homers and a .605 OPS through 24 games with the O’s. He hasn’t played since May 15 due to a shoulder issue.

Cam Booser, Chicago White Sox, LHP

Booser’s call-up was one of the highlights of an otherwise bleak 2024 Red Sox season. He was traded to Chicago in the offseason for minor-league right-hander Yhoiker Fajardo.

Through 27 appearances out of the White Sox bullpen, Booser has amassed a 4.76 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He has allowed only one earned run since May 20.

Brad Keller, Chicago Cubs, RHP

Keller’s stint in Boston was forgettable. He posted a 5.84 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 11 appearances, contributing to a 2024 Red Sox bullpen that was among the team’s most glaring weaknesses all season.

With the Cubs, Keller has been a revelation. The 29-year-old has a 1.99 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 29 strikeouts and eight walks over 29 appearances (31.2 innings). He hasn’t allowed an earned run since April 22.

Lucas Sims, Philadelphia Phillies, RHP

The Red Sox’ 2024 trade deadline acquisition posted a 13.86 ERA in 18 appearances with the Washington Nationals before being released on May 9. He signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies later in the month.

Luis Garcia, Los Angeles Dodgers, RHP

Another letdown 2024 Red Sox trade deadline addition, Garcia has a 4.50 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 26 appearances out of the Dodgers ‘pen.

Enmanuel Valdez, Pittsburgh Pirates, INF

Primarily a second baseman in Boston, Valdez has spent most of his time at first base this year with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 26-year-old is hitting .209 with two homers and a .657 OPS in 31 games.

Chris Kreider and Rangers Management Have Reportedly Been In Constant Communication Throughout Trade Discussions

Brad Penner-Imagn Images

It came out late on Tuesday night that the New York Rangers are in advanced discussions with the Anaheim Ducks regarding a trade involving Chris Kreider.

How does Kreider’s 15-team no-trade list impact these negotiations?

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Kreider needs to waive his no-trade clause as Anaheim is on the list of no teams.

Larry Brooks of The New York Post is under the impression that this no-move clause won’t be an issue in trade negotiations due to one simple reason.

“I have been told that Drury and Kreider's camp have been in constant communication through the off-season so I would be surprised if a no-trade list becomes an issue,” Brooks wrote via X.

Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today is reporting that the framework is a prospect and a pick coming back to the Rangers with the Ducks taking Kreider’s full $6.5M AAV.

The Rangers were successfully able to move off of Barclay Goodrow’s contract after waiving him last offseason and being claimed by the San Jose Sharks and did not retain any of Jacob Trouba’s contract as the Ducks took on his entire salary.

Now, it seems as if the Rangers are on track to trade Kreider without retaining any of his salary, which would be a big financial victory for the team.

Kreider could be the first domino to fall in what should be a busy offseason for the Blueshirts.

Luzardo bounces back in big way as Phillies earn series win over Cubs

Luzardo bounces back in big way as Phillies earn series win over Cubs originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

A temporary sigh of relief is in order.

Wednesday’s afternoon matinee against the Cubs ticked a few boxes the Phillies desperately needed:

•The club pulled out a 7-2 win, collecting a series win for the first time in 13 days.

•There was a pulse with the offense, who attacked Cubs’ starting pitcher Ben Brown early for a three-run first inning.

•Most importantly, this was the bounce back performance from Jesús Luzardo that everyone was hoping for, especially Luzardo.

“I don’t have an answer, but there’s no one working harder at finding an answer than me.”

Those were pitcher’s words in the Toronto clubhouse after his last outing. In his previous two starts, he gave up a combined 21 hits, 20 earned runs, five walks and struck out six with a whopping 31.76 ERA … and he didn’t even reach six total innings (5.2).

It quickly squashed the narrative that was gaining traction about his name in the early Cy Young conversations.

But perhaps we’ll look back at the end of the season and mark this performance against the Cubs as the reset game for him.

Let’s hope it is.

“I don’t think anyone else on the planet wanted (today’s outcome) more than I did,” Luzardo said after the win. His level of competitiveness never faltered and his ability to right the wrongs this quickly is a testament to him and the pitching staff.

Luzardo went six innings for 99 pitches, only allowed one run on five hits and punched out 10 in the process. It’s the fourth time this season he’s reached double-digit strikeouts and the 11th time in his career. Not allowing a single walk makes it all the more impressive.

“Obviously the last two (starts) have been extremely frustrating and just a bad stretch,” Luzardo said. “Being able to come back and just get the win with the team was huge. I think that was the biggest thing for me.

“Just getting back on track is huge and a sense of relief of understanding that the stuff is still there. I feel great physically … and the adjustments that we made obviously worked, so we’re happy about that.”

While Luzardo was righting the ship on the mound, the offense also had one of its better days in June, and it started right from the jump with three runs in the first inning.

Aside from Johan Rojas, everyone in the lineup collected at least one hit. Trea Turner had a multi-hit day, a walk and stolen base. Alec Bohm had a monster afternoon with two hits and four RBIs. Kyle Schwarber finally smashed his second home run in June. Otto Kemp now has four hits in his three games at Citizens Bank Park.

Bryce Harper not being in the lineup has been an obvious blow to the offense — but the production from this past week was never going to be the standard. And through all of this, Turner is hitting .303, Nick Castellanos .287 and Bohm has quietly crept up to .283.

“(Today) felt good,” Bohm said. “I think as a whole it’s not that we haven’t been getting hits or anything like that, I just think the big hit has been avoiding us. Whether it’s been good defensive plays or missing balls. It feels good today for some guys to get some big hits.”

Even with Thursday being an off day for the club, it feels like the momentum could be swinging back in their favor.

The Phillies got swept on the road and then took two-of-three from the Cubs … sound familiar? Well, it’s happened twice this season.

The last time, they followed it up by going 19-6 over the next 25 games. It’d be nice if history was able to repeat itself.

Midweek roster move

Prior to Wednesday’s game, the Phillies recalled pitcher Michael Mercado from AAA. Through 17 games Mercado is 2-0 with a 5.31 ERA. To make room for the right-handed pitcher, Carlos Hernández was designated for assignment.

“We needed the pitching and Mercado’s been throwing the ball well, he’s stretched out to four innings,” Rob Thomson said Wednesday.

“He’s got a good arm and he can really spin it. Just being able to attack the zone, really is the only thing that comes up with him. He’s been throwing the ball pretty well, I know his ERA over the course of the year is up there but lately he’s been really good.”

Giants put Bailey on IL with neck strain, select Porter from Triple-A

Giants put Bailey on IL with neck strain, select Porter from Triple-A originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The injury bug officially has hit the Giants.

One day after losing third baseman Matt Chapman to a right hand sprain, San Francisco on Wednesday placed catcher Patrick Bailey on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 8, with a neck strain.

The Gold Glove backstop was a late scratch before the Giants’ 6-5 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night at Coors Field. Bailey has struggled at the plate this season but was showing signs of emerging from his prolonged slump before his injury.

After designating backup catcher Sam Huff for assignment on June 4, the Giants added Andrew Knizner at the position, who since has started three games but has yet to record a hit in nine at-bats. San Francisco on Wednesday selected catcher Logan Porter’s contract from Triple-A Sacramento after the 29-year-old slashed .237/.350/.319 with the River Cats this season.

The Giants also designated infielder Osleivis Basabe for assignment in Wednesday’s series of roster moves.

The injuries to Bailey and Chapman — two defensive stalwarts — come amid a six-game winning streak for San Francisco, and others certainly will have to step up in the starters’ absences if the Giants want to remain competitive in a tight NL West race.

Yankees’ Aaron Judge hits third-longest homer of MLB season, a 469-foot shot in first inning vs KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Aaron Judge only watched his latest prodigious homer long enough to make sure it was out of Kauffman Stadium.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone? He made sure to find the best possible vantage point to see it land.

That ended up being 469 feet away from the plate, right on top of the Royals Hall of Fame in left field. It was the third-longest homer in the majors this season, and the two-run shot propelled New York to a 10-2 win over Kansas City on Tuesday night.

“I made sure to jump up and get a good spot where I could really watch it,” Boone said afterward, flashing a smile. “I mean, I was under control. Poised. I was in a good spot to really watch it. That was evaporated.”

The home run off the Royals’ Noah Cameron had an exit velocity of 117.9 mph, tying it for the third-hardest hit home run in the majors this season. The Angels’ Mike Trout hit the longest homer so far, a 484-foot shot against the Giants on April 19, while his teammate Logan O’Hoppe hit one 470 against A’s on May 27.

Judge hit one 468 feet against the Brewers on March 29, and 12 times in his career has a homer traveled at least 465.

“Just glad to get the two runs,” Judge said, when asked whether he took a moment to marvel at his latest long ball. “There’s no time. It’s on to the next. You do something, you enjoy it for a moment and then you’re on to the next.”

That approach seems to be working well for the two-time MVP, who also had a bloop single in the sixth inning to mark his 50th game out of 65 in which he’s reached base multiple times. The only other players in the modern era to accomplish that feat also were Yankees: Babe Ruth in 1923, ‘24 and ’27, and Lou Gehrig in 1936.

As for the homers, Judge has hit 24 of them this season. Half of those have given New York the lead in a game.

“I mean, he just keeps impressing. Being able to watch him every day is a treat,” said Max Fried, who allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings Tuesday night. “Then when you see him day in and day out and get to know him, it’s not surprising at all.”

Judge wound up 2 for 5 against the Royals, keeping his average at a league-best .396 — 30 points higher than second-place Jacob Wilson of the A’s. He also leads the league in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, hits and total bases.

“If he keeps ascending from here, I won’t be surprised,” Boone said. “The most amazing part of it is I feel like he’s just playing well. I don’t feel like he’s been on fire at any point. That’s what is amazing about it. He’s out there playing well. Getting his hits, doing his thing. But in a lot of ways, I’m honestly waiting for him to catch fire. That’s when it gets really scary.

“He’s playing in a different league,” Boone added with another smile. “He needs to get called up.”
