Cleveland has cut AL Central deficit from 15 1/2 games to 6. The record divisional comeback is 14

It’s been a tough few weeks for the Cleveland Guardians — except on the field.

Star closer Emmanuel Clase joined teammate Luis Ortiz in being placed on leave as part of an investigation into sports betting. Then the front office traded away former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber as he neared a return from Tommy John surgery — not exactly the type of move a team makes when it fancies itself a contender.

And yet, the Guardians have won nine of their last 11, even after a loss Sunday to the Chicago White Sox. They are a half-game behind the New York Yankees for the final wild card in the American League.

After losing to Detroit on July 6 — just over a month ago — the Guardians had dropped 10 in a row and trailed the AL Central-leading Tigers by 15 1/2 games. That lead is now six. If Cleveland actually catches Detroit and wins the division, it would be the biggest comeback in the divisional play era.

Here are the largest comebacks to date, according to Sportradar.

1978 New York Yankees (14 games): New York won the AL East thanks to Bucky Dent’s homer in a one-game playoff at Fenway Park, and although this was a painful episode in Red Sox history, the Yankees won this more than Boston lost it. New York went 30-9 to finish the regular season. After stumbling in early September, the Red Sox later won eight in a row to force the playoff.

1995 Seattle Mariners (13 games): After a win on Aug. 2, the California Angels led Seattle by 13 in the AL West and Texas by 11. Then the Angels went 22-34 the rest of the way while the Mariners were 36-20. When the teams met in a one-game playoff, it was a 9-1 blowout in Seattle’s favor, and although wild cards were in the playoffs for the first time, California couldn’t even salvage one of those.

2012 Oakland Athletics (13 games): Fresh off two straight pennants, the Texas Rangers led the Angels by 6 1/2 and the A’s by 13 at the end of June. But Oakland went 33-13 down the stretch, forcing the Rangers to settle for a wild card.

1973 New York Mets (12 1/2 games): Tug McGraw’s famous phrase — “Ya gotta believe!” — was a rallying cry of this comeback. New York was 12 1/2 back in early July and still in last place in late August, but the Mets took a weak NL East with an 82-79 record and then beat Cincinnati to win the pennant.

2006 Minnesota Twins (12 1/2 games): Detroit was 35-14 and led the Twins by over a dozen games, but there was enough time left for Minnesota to edge the Tigers in the AL Central when Detroit dropped five in a row to end the regular season. Although there are similarities between 2006 and this year, the good news for the Tigers is that they did make the World Series that season as a wild card.

Trivia time

Which team did the Red Sox a momentary favor by routing the Yankees 9-2 to help force that playoff game in 1978?

Line of the week

Shea Langeliers had five hits — including three solo homers — for the Athletics a 16-7 win over Washington on Tuesday night. Langeliers became the fourth catcher with two three-homer games, joining Johnny Bench, Gary Carter and Travis d’Arnaud.

Comeback of the week

The New York Mets led Milwaukee 5-0 in the fourth inning Sunday, but nobody who has watched those two teams recently should have been shocked when the Brewers chipped away and eventually won 7-6 on a solo homer by Isaac Collins in the bottom of the ninth.

Milwaukee, which had a win probability of 7.1% in the fourth according to Baseball Savant, has won nine in a row to take a five-game lead over the Phillies and Blue Jays for baseball’s best record. The Mets, on the other hand, have dropped seven straight and lead Cincinnati by only 1 1/2 games for the National League’s final wild card.

Trivia answer

Cleveland, which won just 69 games that season.

Red Sox at Astros prediction: Odds, expert picks, starting pitchers, betting trends, and stats for August 11

Its Monday, August 11 and the Red Sox (65-54) are in Houston to open a series against the Astros (66-52).

Garrett Crochet is slated to take the mound for Boston against Cristian Javier for Houston. This is Javier's first start since returning from elbow surgery in May of 2024.

These teams met at the beginning of the month in Boston and the Red Sox swept the series outscoring the Astros 15-5. Boston has since lost their last two but still sit just four games behind the Blue Jays in the Amercian League East. Houston's mediocre August (4-5) coupled with Seattle's surge (8-1) this month have combined to see the Astros' lead in the American League West dwindle to just 0.5 games. Needless to say, this is a series with massive ramifications.

Mets vs. Braves: 5 things to watch and series predictions | Aug. 12-14

Here are five things to watch and predictions as the Mets and Braves play a three-game series at Citi Field starting on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. on SNY.

5 things to watch

The quest for 253

Pete Alonso officially etched his name into the Mets record books on Saturday.

The big man lifted his 252nd career home run in the second inning against the Brewers, tying Darryl Strawberry’s all-time franchise mark.

That leaves him just one away from standing alone as the Mets’ HR king.

Alonso has been swinging a hot bat of late after a bit of a cold stretch, producing three of his 26 homers and 10 RBI over his last seven games.

He’s gone deep 15 times in 95 career games against the Braves.

He has one against Tuesday's starter Spencer Strider, and one against Thursday's starter Bryce Elder

Mets fans are certainly hoping Alonso can make some history back in the home ballpark.

When will the losing streak end?

The Mets’ brutal stretch of baseball continues.

New York led the Brewers by five runs after four innings on Sunday afternoon, but ended up being walked off on Isaac Collins’ solo shot leading off the bottom of the ninth.

That sent the Mets packing with back-to-back series sweeps, their seventh consecutive loss, and their 11th loss in their last 12 games.

They now find their lead for the third National League Wild Card slot trimmed all the way down to just 1.5 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds.

In the NL East they are 5.5 games back of the Phillies, who have won seven of their last 10.

Now the Mets have to contend with the rival Braves, who are coming off a commanding road series victory over the Miami Marlins.

Can Kodai Senga finally get into a groove?

Senga’s rough stretch since returning from the IL continued into this weekend.

The right-hander worked his way through four scoreless innings to start Friday’s series opener, but the Brewers were able to make him pay for a fielding error in the fifth.

He allowed a game-tying homer to Brice Turang a few pitches later and never recovered, as he was pulled with a final line of three runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks over just 4.1 innings of work.

May 1, 2025; New York City, New York, USA; New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga (34) walks to the dugout after getting a strikeout for the third out during the third inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citi Field.

Even when he was in control he wasn’t particularly dominant, recording just two whiffs and a season-low of two strikeouts on the night.

While the error hurt, Senga’s command issues are ultimately what plagued him again -- he’s now issued at least three free passes in each of his last four outings.

The Mets are 3-1 over that span, but he's pitched to an ugly 6.61 ERA.

If New York hopes to turn this thing around, they'll need him to get back on track.

Atlanta’s surging young star

Not much has gone right for the Braves this season, but they may've found themselves their next young star.

Rookie catcher Drake Baldwin continues to produce for Atlanta’s up-and-down offense.

Baldwin is coming off a tremendous weekend in which he torched the Marlins’ pitching staff, putting together three multi-hit showings while driving in a total of 10 runs.

That’s the most RBIs produced by a Braves rookie in a single series since 1966.

The 24-year-old has himself square in the middle of the NL Rookie of the Year conversation, hitting .289 with 13 homers and 51 RBI through 86 games.

He has three RBI and a .850 OPS in six games against the Mets.

Welcome back, Cookie!

With their rotation decimated by injuries, Atlanta added Carlos Carrasco in a deal with the Yankees ahead of the deadline.

Carrasco had a bit of an up-and-down start to the season in New York’s rotation, and he ended up being DFA’d in early June.

After clearing waivers accepted an assignment to the minors and pitched well, posting a 3.27 ERA across 11 Triple-A appearances.

The 38-year-old has been subpar for the most part since landing in Atlanta, giving up nine earned runs in just 11.2 innings of work over his first two outings with the club.

This will be his first Citi Field start since he finished his time with the club in 2023.

Predictions

Who will the MVP of the series be?

Juan Soto

Soto went deep twice this weekend, and is hitting .307 over his last seven games.

Which Mets pitcher will have the best start?

Kodai Senga

Senga's been shaky thus far, but it's time for him to step up.

Which Braves player will be a thorn in the Mets' side?

Marcell Ozuna

Ozuna has been a Met killer, and is hitting a scorching .368 over his last seven games.

Despite continued struggles, Brandon Nimmo believes Mets ‘still got a shot’ in NL East

To put it mildly, the Mets are going through it right now.

It feels like things have blown up in their faces no matter what button manager Carlos Mendoza pushes over the past couple of weeks.

That was again the case on Sunday, as they opened a five-run advantage early against dominant Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester, but were unable to hang on in an ugly walk-off loss

New York has now been swept in back-to-back series by the Brewers and Guardians.

The team's losing streak is at seven games and they’ve dropped 11 of their last 12.

The Mets have quickly found themselves fading away in the race for the NL East -- now sitting 5.5 games behind the Phillies, who have won seven of their last 10 after adding some big pieces at the deadline.

They do still occupy the final NL Wild Card spot, but even that lead has slipped to just 0.5 game over the Cincinnati Reds, who will face off with the Phillies to open this week.

Things are not looking good for this squad right now, but one of their longest-tenured members has been down this path before, and he still believes they can turn things around heading down the stretch.

“We can go on a run, we’ve still got time here,” Brandon Nimmo said. “It just takes putting it all together and playing some better baseball over the next few weeks of the season, so no, I don’t think the division is slipping away from us, we’ve still got a shot.

"This team specifically has been known for going on runs, so we can easily rattle off a winning streak with the people we’ve got here."

Luckily for the Mets, they will see the Phillies seven more times the rest of the way, with the first three coming later in August at Citi Field.

But first they’ll have to get through the rival Braves, who still sit in fourth place in the division, but are coming off a series in which they took four out of five from the Marlins.

“We just gotta go out and do it,” Carlos Mendoza said. “We have the talent, we have the players, but we have to start playing better baseball and just go out and get the job done. I know it’s frustrating, we’re all frustrated in here, but we just have to keep going because nobody said it was going to be easy.”

Mets’ Sean Manaea feels he’s trending in right direction, just needs to 'take that next step'

Sean Manaea has had a bit of a rough time since returning from the IL.

The big southpaw started things well for the Mets on Sunday afternoon, as he was handed an early lead and worked around baserunners in each of the first two innings.

He pieced together his first real inning of the day in bottom of the third, but then the Brewers were able to get something going against him in the fourth.

As was the case in his last outing, Manaea seemingly ran out of steam late and he begun getting knocked around a bit by the red-hot pesky Brew Crew.

William Contreras led off the inning with a homer, then two hits and a walk loaded the bases with two outs.

Manaea worked his way into a two-strike count, but speedy infielder Joey Ortiz lined his first two out two-run single past a diving Pete Alonso to cut into the large deficit.

The lefty escaped the inning and returned to the mound in the fifth, but was pulled after allowing a leadoff single, which came around to score a few pitches later on Contreras’ second home run of the day.

He ended with a final line of four runs allowed on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out five batters across just four innings of work.

“I think guys just start seeing some things and they were fouling pitches off against me,” he said. “They really made me work that last inning, and then they were able to capitalize on a couple of my mistakes.”

The Mets continue to limit Manaea’s usage after he was shelved through the middle of July due to lingering elbow and oblique injuries.

He tossed a season-high 87 pitches, but failed to work past the fifth for the fifth time in his six outings.

Manaea’s ERA is also now up to a shaky 4.33 mark over that span.

“It’s frustrating,” he said. “I feel like I’m doing everything right and finally heading in the right direction out there, I just need to take that next step.”

The Mets certainly do need both Manaea and Kodai Senga to return to their dominant forms atop the rotation if they hope to shake these recent struggles make some noise in the National League playoff race.

Plaschke: Dodgers' inability to improve bullpen at trade deadline haunts them again

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia (51) reacts after giving up a solo home run.
Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia reacts after giving up a solo home run to Toronto's Ernie Clement in the ninth inning of the Dodgers' 5-4 loss Sunday at Dodger Stadium. (Wally Skalij / Associated Press)

A lazy, lovely afternoon at Chavez Ravine was startled awake Sunday by three blue-curdling screams.

The Dodger bullpen had struck again.

Eighth inning, one out, Dodgers leading the Toronto Blue Jays by a run, rusty Blake Treinen on the mound.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., boom, nooooo!

Addison Barger, boom, nooooo!

Ninth inning, game tied, Alex Vesia on the mound acting like a closer because the Dodgers don’t have a healthy closer.

Ernie Clement, boom, not again!

Battered by three home runs in the last two innings Sunday, the Dodgers lost a game they should have won, blew a game they should have had, and planted an ominous message deep into the bowels of sweaty Dodger Stadium.

Read more:Dave Roberts criticizes Shohei Ohtani after Dodgers' frustrating loss to Blue Jays

This is a team trying to win a second consecutive championship without an adequate bullpen.

The 5-4 loss wasted a sterling start by Tyler Glasnow, frittered away 10 hits and 13 walks from a burgeoning offense, ruined a chance to sweep the team with the best record in the American League, and created a trivia question that will be bandied about the league until the last week in October.

What standout reliever did the Dodgers acquire at the trade deadline?

Nobody.

What standout reliever had their critics been begging them to acquire for weeks?

Any of them.

Maybe Andrew Friedman’s previous deadline brilliance convinced everyone into thinking he could pull something off again, and maybe the public pressure was less than usual because of the credits earned by the 2024 title, but here’s guessing much of Dodger nation woke up Monday morning after watching a reliever tagged with the loss in three of the last six games and thought...

What just happened? Is it too late to fix?

Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen watches from the dugout after giving up two home runs in the eighth inning Sunday.

What happened was the Dodgers' belief in the recovering health of their bullpen. And, um, yeah, unless you want to bring Bobby Miller up from Oklahoma City to close games (not a bad idea, eh?), it’s not getting fixed anytime soon.

Michael Kopech, Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates should all be returning from the injured list, and the thought is that the Dodgers can find a closer somewhere in there, but you’ve seen them all and do you agree?

There is also the belief in this weird bit of Dodger closer history — the final inning in their last two championships was worked by a starter.

This is countered by the fact that the last two times Friedman didn’t make a significant pitching upgrade at the deadline they were eliminated in the first round.

So, yes, Friedman hasn’t lost any of his smarts and Dave Roberts hasn’t lost any of his savvy and they can probably piece this mess together for short periods in October.

But between now and then, you need someone to make the big pitch in the clutch situation and save the offense from itself.

You need a closer so you don’t have the eternal optimist Roberts looking oddly despondent late Sunday afternoon.

“This is frustrating because I just felt there is no way we should lose this game today,” he said.

He wasn’t so upset with Vesia and Treinen — both guys have been put in tough spots, especially Treinen, who recently came off the injured list.

He was mostly upset with the Dodger offense that made the withering bullpen — which has recorded the most innings in baseball — so necessary.

The Dodgers had a 3-2 lead after six innings. The back-to-back dingers in the eighth cost them that lead.

The Dodgers came back to tie it on a bases-loaded walk to Freddie Freeman in the eighth.

Clement’s long ball grabbed the lead again for the Blue Jays in the ninth.

“Yeah, it’s pretty frustrating,” Vesia said.

But equally frustrating was the 16 men the Dodgers left on base, including leaving the bases loaded three times, twice in the last two innings.

“We had them on the ropes numerous times,” Roberts said. “And for us not to win is so frustrating.”

How disappointed was Roberts? When is the last time you’ve heard him criticize Shohei Ohtani’s play? Well, he did it Sunday, twice in a span of a minute.

First, there was Ohtani ending the sixth inning by getting thrown out attempting to steal third base with Freeman at the plate.

“Not a good baseball play,” Roberts said.

Then there was Ohtani striking out with a wild swing on a low and outside full-count pitch from Mason Fluharty — he of the 5.15 ERA — with bases loaded in the ninth.

“We’ve got to come up with one right there,” Roberts said. “Chasing the ball down below ... is something that we can’t have.”

You know what could have prevented all this angst? A deeper bullpen. A more rested bullpen. A fixed bullpen.

Mets promoting top prospects Jonah Tong, Jett Williams, Carson Benge, Ryan Clifford to Triple-A Syracuse: report

The Mets are promoting four prospects in Joe DeMayo's midseason top 30 for SNY -- infielder/center fielder Jett Williams (No. 1), right-handed pitcher Jonah Tong (No. 2), outfielder Carson Benge (No. 3) and first baseman Ryan Clifford (No. 6) -- from Double-A Binghamton to Triple-A Syracuse, according to a report Sunday by The Athletic's Will Sammon.
