Maja Stark has won tournaments around the world, but a professional victory in the United States eluded her. Now she is a US Women’s Open champion.

The Swede shot an even-par 72 to win the second major of the year by two shots on Sunday at Erin Hills. Stark led the championship by one stroke through 54 holes and outlasted the World No 1, Nelly Korda, who got within a shot of the lead before petering out on the back nine.

Giro d’Italia: Del Toro tightens grip on pink jersey as Prodhomme wins stage 19

  • Frenchman breaks clear to claim victory on brutal ride

Nicolas Prodhomme claimed the first Grand Tour stage win of his career when he rode solo to victory on stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia on Friday, while Mexico’s pink jersey holder, Isaac del Toro, came second to extend his overall lead.

On their penultimate day in the mountains, the riders faced a brutal 166km ride from Biella to Champoluc with five classified climbs and a total elevation gain of nearly 5,000m. Prodhomme, from the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale team, broke free on the fourth climb to take the lead and eventually the victory to become the first Frenchman to win a Giro stage this year.

Charlie Woods, the 16-year-old son of golfing great Tiger Woods, earned his first American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) win on Wednesday with a three-shot victory at the Team TaylorMade Invitational in Bowling Green, Florida.

Woods, playing in his fifth AJGA event, began the final round one shot behind overnight leader Luke Colton and mixed two bogeys with eight birdies for a six-under-par 66 on the Black Course at Streamsong Resort that brought him to 15 under on the week.

Del Toro breaks from Bardet and Carapaz to win stage 17 and extend Giro d’Italia lead

Isaac del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG maintained his excellent form at the Giro d’Italia to win stage 17 with a perfectly timed sprint on Wednesday, the Mexican’s first stage victory helping him to extend his lead in the overall standings.

The 155km route from San Michele all’Adige to Bormio was less punishing than Tuesday’s stage 16, but featured two difficult climbs at Passo del Tonale and Passo del Mortirolo, with 3,800 metres of elevation.

The team, captained by the Italy international Giovanni Di Lorenzo and including player of the season Scott McTominay, arrived for their papal audience a day after a triumphant open-top bus parade through central Naples.

Christian Scaroni won an action-packed stage of the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday, as Isaac del Toro’s rivals cut into his overall lead and favourite Primoz Roglic abandoned the race.

Stage 16 of the Giro was a 203km ride from Piazzola sul Brenta to San Valentino, featuring four brutal climbs totalling up to 4,900m of elevation, with heavy rainfall leading to several crashes.

MotoGP: Marco Bezzecchi wins chaotic British GP after Quartararo heartbreak

Marco Bezzecchi won a chaotic British Grand Prix for Aprilia’s first victory of the season in a race that was initially red flagged for an oil spill and riders crashed or retired while in the lead, including Fabio Quartararo.

The victory was a first for Aprilia since the Grand Prix of the Americas last April. LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco came second and Ducati’s Marc Márquez pipped Franco Morbidelli to finish third and extend his lead in the world championship. Both Alex Márquez and his brother Marc crashed while leading before the race was restarted for an oil spill while polesitter Quartararo took the lead at the second time of asking before being forced to retire due to an issue with his bike.

Novak Djokovic beats Hubert Hurkacz at Geneva Open for 100th title

Novak Djokovic became the third man in the Open era to reach 100 career wins, surviving a three-set thriller against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz at the Geneva Open.

The Serbian great, seeded second, needed three hours and five minutes to turn back the sixth-seeded Hurkacz 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) and win at the clay-court ATP 250 event. Djokovic was down 2-4 in the final set but a break of Hurkacz in the eighth game got the match back on serve. Djokovic prevailed despite 52 winners by Hurkacz, which included 19 aces.

Kasper Asgreen goes solo after peloton crash to claim stage 14 of Giro d’Italia

Denmark’s Kasper Asgreen took advantage of a crash in the chasing peloton and went alone to win stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia, while the Mexican Isaac del Toro extended his overall lead.

Asgreen was part of an early breakaway trio but, after several riders were brought down in a crash which split up the peloton, the Dane went for broke in the final kilometres and held off the chasing group.

Mads Pedersen won his fourth stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia when he sprinted to victory on Friday’s stage 13, beating Wout van Aert to the line while Isaac del Toro maintained his overall lead to retain the maglia rosa.

As the riders neared the finish of the 180km ride from Rovigo to Vicenza, Pedersen was fourth when he launched his bid for victory on the uphill sprint as Van Aert stayed close on his wheel. Del Toro had done well to earn bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint but the 21-year-old did not have the legs to challenge the sprint heavyweights as he settled for third, leaving Pedersen and Van Aert to battle it out for victory.

Richard Carapaz won stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday with a solo ride in the last nine kilometres, with the leader, Isaac del Toro, finishing second in a sprint to the line, 10 seconds behind the former Olympic champion.

Carapaz, the winner of the 2019 Giro, timed his attack to perfection for his fourth career stage win in the race while Del Toro retained the pink jersey, adding six seconds to his lead.

Giro d’Italia: Ayuso and Roglic close on Del Toro as Hoole prevails in Pisa

Dutchman Daan Hoole won stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia as rain hampered the later starters in Tuesday’s time trial, which ended with Mexico’s Isaac del Toro clinging to the overall lead.

Hoole, the 26-year-old Lidl-Trek rider, took advantage of dry roads to cover the 28.6km from Lucca to Pisa in 32 minutes and 30 seconds for his first Grand Tour stage win. By the time the leading riders left the start gate rain was falling, making the corners slippery and reducing speeds.

US Open’s $800m renovation to include ‘spa-like’ locker rooms

The site of the US Open will undergo an $800m transformation, the US Tennis Association said on Monday, with a “top-to-bottom” modernisation of the famed Arthur Ashe Stadium and a new player performance center planned for the sprawling Queens campus.

Work at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center will be completed by the 2027 US Open, with construction taking place in phases to avoid any interruption of the 2025 or 2026 editions of the tournament.
