The Detroit Pistons will be looking to break their season-long three-game losing streak as they visit the Miami Heat tonight.

Detroit is still far from completely healthy and faces a team that has won four straight, so I’m taking Miami to win in my Pistons vs. Heat predictions.

Let’s take a closer look at this Eastern Conference showdown in my free NBA picks for Sunday, March 8.

The Detroit Pistons suffered one of their worst losses of the year last night, losing 107-105 to the Nets. Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson both missed that game, and while they may play tonight, it’s unclear how limited they might be.

Detroit is playing banged up and in the second half of a back-to-back against a rested Miami Heat team that has won four straight.

The Heat have one win against the Pistons this year and played Detroit tough in both meetings. The way these teams are playing right now, I like Miami to win outright at home.

If the Heat are going to win tonight, it will be on the back of two of their biggest stars. Bam Adebayo has put up at least 21 points in each of his last five games, while Tyler Herro is coming off a monster game where he compiled 51 points + rebounds + assists, his second straight game going Over tonight’s total.

Our "from downtown" SGP: Double-double trouble

Miami has two potential double-double threats every night in Adebayo and Kel’el Ware, and both have been getting them regularly as of late. Adebayo has three double-doubles in his last five games, while Ware has gotten there in six of his last nine games.

On the outside, Davion Mitchell has been busy from 3-point range as well, hitting at least two shots from beyond the arc in three of his last four contests.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nathan Miller won the 41st Los Angeles Marathon in the final stride on Sunday, becoming the second straight American men's winner in the race's closest finish ever.

Miller, of Jackson, Michigan, completed the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 11 minutes, 18 seconds, overtaking Michael Kamau of Kenya, who was second in the same time.

Kamau didn't take any fluids during the race and fell at the finish. He was taken away on a stretcher.

Miller, 36, is a substitute teacher and a high school track and cross country coach at Jackson High School. His personal best is 2:10:45 at the 2023 Grandma's Marathon, where he set a record as the fastest U.S.-born Black marathoner.

Last year, Matt Richtman became the first American to win the men’s race since 1994. He won in 2:07:56.

Enyew Nigat of Kenya was third on Sunday in 2:14:23.

In the women's race, Priscah Cherono of Kenya won in 2:25:20. The 45-year-old mother of three lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was 10th in the 5,000 meters at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Kellyn Taylor of Flagstaff, Arizona, finished second in 2:27:37. Antonina Kwambai of Kenya was third in 2:28:50.

Race organizers had announced that because of the weather medals would be given out to runners who completed just 18 miles of the course that began at Dodger Stadium and ended in the Century City section of Los Angeles. Temperatures were expected to rise into the 80s by midday.

Tari Eason Over 10.5 points (+100)

Projection: 12.5 points

Tari Eason has failed to cover this number in six straight, but before that, he scored 11+ in three of four outings. A 41% shooter on the season, Eason is due for positive regression after going 3-for-21 from deep over his last five.

Our prop projections call for the forward to go two whole points over his number tonight, and with this prop at plus money, it offers great value.

Tari Eason Over 6.5 rebounds (+110)

Projection: 7.1 points

Eason has fallen just short of this line in his last three outings, but he gobbled up 19 rebounds in the two games prior. Both these teams also play stout defense, which will offer up plenty of rebounding opportunities for the 24-year-old.

The +110 price tag makes this play even better.

Kevin Durant Under 25.5 points (-110)

Projection: 24.1 points

Kevin Durant has failed to reach 26 points in back-to-back outings and five of his last seven. KD can still score with the best of them, but he's no longer dominating night in and night out.

The Spurs have the size and length to keep Durant in check, and even a good game from the future Hall of Famer can still cash this Under. 

In four matchups against San Antonio this season, KD has finished Under this number each time.

Projection: 14.8 points

Devin Vassell has turned into a reliable scorer for the Spurs, averaging nearly 15 points per game. Vassell had a rough shooting night in his last outing, but his 3-point volume makes this number enticing.

The young guard has put up five or more threes in seven straight, and he's a near 39% 3-point shooter. Depending on how hot he gets, Vassell could cash this prop on threes alone.

De'Aaron Fox Over 16.5 points (-115)

Projection: 17.9 points

De'Aaron Fox has been stupendous in San Antonio, and he's cleared this point total in back-to-back outings. He sits second on the team in scoring with 18.8 PPG, and the last time these teams met, he scored 18. That's right around where tonight's projections sit.

Victor Wembanyama has splashed four threes in consecutive outings, taking 19 attempts in that span.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been waiting for the entire season for Max Strus to make his debut. If all goes as planned, they won’t have to wait much longer.

“He’s ramping up,” said Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson. “I believe he’s got one more visit with the doctor to kind of confirm that we’re doing alright.”

Strus has been on the sidelines since last May when the Cavs were eliminated in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. He suffered a Jones fracture just weeks before the current season began and has only recently begun on-court work with the rest of the team. Strus participated in 90% of practice earlier this week.

“As far as the on-court stuff, he’s just doing more and more every day,” said Atkinson. “So we’re getting closer.”

The Cavs have managed to fare well without Strus. They’ve received huge contributions from players like Sam Merrill and Jaylon Tyson, who have managed to step up and fill his role in the starting lineup at various points throughout the season. Cleveland’s depth, which only got stronger at the deadline, has been a plus for them this year.

Still, Strus brings a skillset that you can’t get enough of. A motion shooter who can handle the rock and defend at high intensity is valuable any day of the week. Strus, if healthy, gives the Cavaliers even more firepower.

We can’t predict what Strus will look like upon returning. How quickly can he dust off his shoulders and get initiated with this roster that has changed so much since he last played? Does Strus develop immediate chemistry with James Harden? And how long will it take for his conditioning to ramp up to mid-season form with fewer than 20 games to play before the postseason?

There’s nothing easy about returning from an injury like this. But, something tells me Strus is the type of grit-and-grind player who is doing everything in his power to get back on the floor and prepare in the playoffs.

Two titans walk into a ring: the Milwaukee Bucks and the Orlando Magic. Having split the season series thus far, who will win the season series??

Where We’re At

To All Who Are Concerned about the Bucks’ recent woes:

Look, Van is absolutely right: it will be hard for the Bucks to “catch” anyone below them in the standings, many of whom are actively trying to lose (unlike the Bucks, of course). But nothing easy’s worth doing, and the further they fall in the standings, the slightly better their chances of a better pick come June. And the alternative—getting pantsed in the 9/10 game by an alt-right rookie—is gonna help their chances to keep the big man? Psh.

But hey, there’s something to be said for not being the Magic. Pegged by this “pundit” to finish third in the conference, they’re mired in sixth after an up-and-down stretch, behind the Raptors (!) and the Sixers (:P). Look, they’re higher than the Bucks, but they had expectations after splashing four firsts on a spot-up shooter, and now Milwaukee just might have to take their coach off their hands and call it even.

With this Dallas Mavericks injury list, Klay Thompson remains a key cog off the bench, and he’s put together back-to-back elite shooting games, going a combined 12-for-23 from beyond the arc. 

I’m taking the Over on 2.5 triples for Klay today in Toronto. He’s nailed this prop in five of his past seven outings, and there would be even more shots up for grabs if Flagg (questionable) is ruled out.

Even at age 36, Thompson can make teams pay from the perimeter, and he’s knocking down his 3-pointers at a 39% clip this season. He hit some clutch shots at Scotiabank Arena in his days with the Warriors, and he’s never shy about letting fly from downtown.

Prop #2: Victor Wembanyama Over 24.5 points

Victor Wembanyama is off to a hot start in March, and he’s dropped 25+ points in three of his last four games, including a 38-point masterpiece against the Pistons. Look for more Wemby magic tonight against the Rockets.

He gave Houston fits with 28 points in a late January matchup, and he’s drilled four 3-pointers in back-to-back contests to keep the San Antonio Spurs in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the West.

Wemby is shooting 51% from the field at home, and his ability to get easy buckets in the paint should help relieve the burden on San Antonio’s guards against the Houston Rockets’ perimeter pressure.

Prop #3: Kon Knueppel Over 18.5 points

Kon Knueppel is surging towards the Rookie of the Year trophy, and he’s coming off a 27-point outing against the Heat on Friday. He’s knocked down 21 threes across his last five contests, and I’m buying into more sharpshooting tonight in Phoenix.

It’s been a great stretch for Knueppel, who’s scored 20+ points in six of his last eight games, and he’s found ways to be even more productive on the road, with a 21.4 ppg average away from Spectrum Center.

The Phoenix Suns’ gritty defense has to be factored in, but we’ve seen the Charlotte Hornets backcourt take down quality opponents on their charge up the standings.

ALTENBERG, Germany (AP) — Julia Taubitz spent four months chasing another World Cup title. The German sliding superstar won it by about the slimmest possible margin.

The Olympic champion is the women's World Cup luge singles champion once again, clinching her fifth consecutive title and sixth overall on Sunday with a second-place finish in the season finale at Altenberg.

Merle Fraebel of Germany won the race, and Taubitz needed a second-place finish to clinch the World Cup title. She got it, holding off third-place finisher Kendija Aparjode of Latvia by just 0.006 seconds; that's about 25 times faster than a typical blink of an eye.

But it was enough.

“Today was a perfect day,” Taubitz said. “It was the most exciting overall World Cup victory of my career.”

Taubitz finished the season with 634 points, four more than Fraebel. Germany's Lisa Schulte finished the season third, and Summer Britcher of the U.S. ended the season fourth in the overall standings.

It was Britcher's best season finish since she placed third overall in 2018-19.

Men's singles

Germany's Felix Loch won the season finale, his 56th World Cup victory and tying him with Italy's Armin Zoeggeler for the most in men's singles history.

Loch, an eight-time World Cup overall champion, held off Italy's Dominik Fischnaller for the record-tying win. Austria's David Gleirscher was third.

Team relay

Austria won the final team relay of the season, with Italy second and Latvia third. The U.S. did not have a team in the relay, since Britcher was the only American slider taking place in the World Cups after the Olympics.

Teams need a men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles team to be part of a relay entry.

Final medal counts

Sunday's World Cup luge finale represented the end of the major international sliding season.

Germany took 149 major international sliding medals — bobsled, skeleton and luge races at the World Cup and Olympic level — this season, which nearly matched the total from the rest of the world combined.

Austria won 57 sliding medals this winter, and the U.S. won 26.

Georgia Tech has decided to fire Damon Stoudamire as its coach following a three-year stint, the school announced Sunday, March 8.

The Yellow Jackets made the move one day after their 79-76 loss to Clemson in the last game of the regular season. With a 2-16 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play, Georgia Tech finished 18th out of 18th in the league and did not qualify for the ACC tournament.

With Saturday's loss, the Yellow Jackets ended the season on a 12-game losing streak. The last win for Georgia Tech was a 78-74 road win over North Carolina State on Jan. 17. The Yellow Jackets won just two out of 17 games since the calendar flipped to 2026. They ended 2025 at 9-5.

Stoudamire, who played in the NBA for 13 years, went 42-55 in three seasons with Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets failed to make the NCAA Tournament under Stoudamire, who replaced Josh Pastner following a seven-year stint.

Georgia Tech owes Stoudamire $2.6 million during the next two years for the remainder of his contract, unless he takes another job.

Georgia Tech has not made an NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2020-21 season and has just four appearances since finishing as the runner-up in the 2004 tournament to Connecticut.

Prior to taking the job with the Yellow Jackets, Stoudamire was an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics. He also coached Pacific from 2016 to 2021, posting a 71-77 record in five seasons with the program.

Stoudamire played college basketball at Arizona from 1991-95 before becoming a first-round pick in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. He was rookie of the year for the Raptors in 1995 and also played for the Trail Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs.

Despite some bumpy spells, the New York Knicks have all the ingredients to be the last team standing in the East, and today’s matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers is a chance to show their playoff pedigree.

The New York Knicks are 16-5 straight up since January 19, and I’m buying into a hot streak that includes victories over the Spurs and Nuggets. 

N.Y. has won six of its past seven road games with a balanced attack the Los Angeles Lakers can only dream about. The Lakers are 2-7 against the spread as home underdogs, and LeBron James is questionable.

No King James means OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges can share the Luka Doncic assignment.

The hosts have lost six of their past seven matchups against teams above. 500, and tonight will be more of the same.

With the Lakers short on frontcourt help, the Knicks’ rebounding edge should be decisive here. Karl-Anthony Towns has had 12+ boards in five straight contests, and he grabbed 13 rebounds against L.A. earlier this season. 

I like the Under today, too, with New York holding its last five opponents Under 105 points. It’s also been a winning ticket in seven of the Lakers’ past 10 games — and five of the last six meetings between these two.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Dan Bradbury of England hit the perfect chip at just the right time, saving par on the final hole Sunday for a 5-under 65 and a one-shot victory in the Joburg Open.

His clutch par on the 18th hole at Houghton Golf Club denied Casey Jarvis of South Africa a chance to join Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros as the only players in European tour history to win three consecutive tournaments.

Brandon Robinson Thompson was tied for the lead, playing one group ahead of Bradbury, when he three-putted the 18th green from about 45 feet for a bogey that gave him a 66.

Bradbury won the Joburg Open in the fall of 2022 for his first European tour victory. The Englishman, who finished his college career at Florida State, also won the French Open in 2024.

“I thought I'd lost it on the front nine. I had so many chances and didn't take them,” said Bradbury, who started the final round two shots behind Hennie Du Plessis. “It feels really good to put it together. I somehow managed to get it done at the end.”

Jarvis was coming off wins at the Kenya Open and the South African Open — the latter earned him spots in the Masters and British Open. He was one shot behind when he hit a superb approach on the par-4 18th that just cleared a ridge and rolled down to 7 feet.

But he pulled his birdie putt and knew it immediately, walking to the hole. He shot 66.

That left it to Bradbury, whose approach bounded over the green into the rough. He chipped it over a slight hill and it rolled with perfect pace toward the cup, stopping a few inches short for his par and the victory.

Du Plessis was in control after a 31 on the front nine, only to lose his way on the back nine with a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3 15th that took him out of contention. He closed with a 70 and finished fourth.

The tournament was co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour.

The Chicago Bulls and Sacramento Kings rank in the Top 5 in pace, so this game should have plenty of possessions and scoring chances. 

The Kings’ defense ranks in the Bottom 5 in defensive efficiency over the past five games. Chicago’s defense has been better, ranking 10th in that same stretch, but playing this fast with a seasonally Bottom 10 defense won’t work out well.

The pace and bad defense are why four of their last five contests have ended Over the total.

Chicago has covered the spread in three straight contests and should cover tonight against a bad Kings defense.

The Kings have allowed the second-most made threes per game across the last five games than any other team, and Josh Giddey has knocked down two or more triples in three straight.

Sacramento is only 1-4 against the spread in its last five, while the Bulls are better built defensively to get enough stops down the stretch to cover as short favorites.
