March Madness bubble live updates: Who is making NCAA Tournament case?

The time is now to prove you belong in the NCAA Tournament.

Conference championship week is the last opportunity teams on the fringe of making March Madness to show they should be in the bracket, resulting in a very tense final few days before Selection Sunday. Every team on the bubble of the NCAA Tournament will play this week.

The tournament picture is already shifting as some teams began action Tuesday, March 10, including a candidate playing for the chance to earn the automatic bid and send ripple effects to the rest of the field. Here are the teams on the bubble in the latest USA TODAY Sports Bracketology as the clock inches closer to midnight.

Missouri

  • Record: 20-11 (10-8)
  • NET Ranking: 60
  • Quad 1 record: 5-6
  • Projected seed: No. 11
  • Quality wins: vs. Florida, at Kentucky, vs. Vanderbilt, vs. Tennessee
  • Bad losses: at Notre Dame, at Mississippi, at LSU

Next game: vs. Kentucky/LSU winner (Thursday, SEC tournament second round)

Missouri has slipped, not feeling as secure as it was a few weeks ago thanks to two straight losses to end the regular season. The Tigers are more safe than others, but they do have to worry about that high NET ranking when it comes to comparing with other resumes. At least a win in the SEC tournament should be enough to secure a spot.

Miami Ohio

  • Record: 31-0 (18-0)
  • NET Ranking: 55
  • Quad 1 record: 0-0
  • Projected seed: No. 11 (first four)
  • Quality wins: vs. Akron
  • Bad losses: none

The still undefeated RedHawks remain one of the most polarizing teams in the country, as there's much debate on whether they still need the automatic berth. Regardless, Miami can put all of it to bed by winning three more games and claim the MAC title.

Next game: vs. UMass (Thursday, MAC tournament quarterfinals)

SMU

  • Record: 20-12 (8-10)
  • NET Ranking: 39
  • Quad 1 record: 4-8
  • Projected seed: No. 11 (first four)
  • Quality wins: vs. North Carolina, vs. Louisville
  • Bad losses: vs. LSU (neutral), at Syracuse

The Mustangs are no longer safe for the NCAA Tournament with a four-game losing streak to end the regular season. While three were Quad 1 losses, they were must wins and really hurt a resume that has a measly 4-4 Quad 2 mark. The skid was finally ended with a win over Syracuse to open the ACC tournament, allowing SMU to breathe. Another win against Louisville would help them breathe much more comfortably.

Next game: vs. Louisville (Wednesday, ACC tournament second round)

Santa Clara

Santa Clara Broncos guard Christian Hammond (1) shoots the basketball against Saint Mary's Gaels guard Joshua Dent (7) during the first half at Orleans Arena.

  • Record: 26-7 (15-3)
  • NET Ranking: 38
  • Quad 1 record: 2-5
  • Projected seed: No. 11 (first four)
  • Quality wins: vs. Saint Mary's (twice)
  • Bad losses: vs. Loyola Chicago (neutral), vs. Arizona State (neutral)

The bubble team of the day. Santa Clara won't have to sweat out Selection Sunday if it beats Gonzaga to win the WCC title for the first time since 1993. Even if it loses, the semifinal win over Saint Mary's was a major boost and could make a huge difference as the week continues.

Next game: vs. Gonzaga (Tuesday, West Coast Conference tournament championship)

Indiana

  • Record: 18-13 (9-11)
  • NET Ranking: 37
  • Quad 1 record: 3-11
  • Projected seed: No. 11 (first four)
  • Quality wins: vs. Purdue, at UCLA
  • Bad losses: at Minnesota, at USC, vs. Northwestern

The Hoosiers were unable to get another Quad 1 victory, something they desperately needed with how many losses it has in the category. A 1-5 finish to the regular season is uninspiring and Indiana needs to win its second round game in the Big Ten tournament or it can kiss its March Madness hopes goodbye.

Next game: vs. Northwestern/Penn State winner (Wednesday, Big Ten tournament second round)

Virginia Commonwealth

  • Record: 24-7 (15-3)
  • NET Ranking: 44
  • Quad 1 record: 1-5
  • Projected seed: No. 11 (First Four)
  • Quality wins: vs. South Florida (neutral)
  • Bad losses: at George Mason

It's unfortunate a shift in the NET rankings resulted in the win at Dayton becoming a Quad 2 result instead of Quad 1 because the Rams needed another mark. The last team in the field, VCU has the most work to do of the teams projected to play in Dayton. It needs to at least make the Atlantic 10 championship game, as a loss any earlier will make it vulnerable to get leaped over by another contender.

Next game: vs. Duquesne/Rhode Island winner (Friday, Atlantic 10 tournament quarterfinals)

Cincinnati

  • Record: 18-14 (9-9)
  • NET Ranking: 46
  • Quad 1 record: 3-11
  • Projected seed: First four out
  • Quality wins: vs. Iowa State, at Kansas, vs. BYU
  • Bad losses: vs. Eastern Michigan, at Xavier

A team surging into the picture is a Cincinnati team that finished with six wins in the last eight regular-season games, with some notable victories in that span. The Bearcats have some of the best wins and worst losses, so it still has work to do. They were able to handle Utah to open the Big 12 tournament, and now must beat UCF in the next round to stay in the fight.

Next game: vs. UCF (Wednesday, Big 12 tournament second round)

West Virginia

  • Record: 18-13 (9-9)
  • NET Ranking: 58
  • Quad 1 record: 5-7
  • Projected seed: First four out
  • Quality wins: vs. Kansas, vs. BYU
  • Bad losses: vs. Xavier (neutral), at Kansas State, vs. Utah

Ross Hodge's first season in Morgantown has largely gone unnoticed, but the Mountaineers have a chance to make the tournament thanks to some other contenders faltering. Still, it's a long road ahead considering how high the NET ranking is and some questionable losses. The only way to the tournament is beating Houston in the Big 12 quarterfinals.

Next game: vs. BYU/Kansas State winner (Wednesday, Big 12 tournament second round)

Auburn

  • Record: 16-15 (7-11)
  • NET Ranking: 40
  • Quad 1 record: 4-12
  • Projected seed: First four out
  • Quality wins: vs. St John's (neutral), vs. Arkansas, at Florida
  • Bad losses: vs. Mississippi, at Mississippi State

Another team in plenty of debate, the Tigers have fallen out of the projected field after failing to beat Alabama in the regular-season finale. Auburn has some incredible wins but so many losses, it's going to have to make a real strong case for the selection committee to ignore it's ugly record. At least two wins are needed.

Next game: vs. Mississippi State (Wednesday, SEC tournament first round)

Stanford

  • Record: 20-12 (9-9)
  • NET Ranking: 59
  • Quad 1 record: 5-6
  • Projected seed: First four out
  • Quality wins: vs. Saint Louis (neutral), vs. Louisville, vs. North Carolina
  • Bad losses: vs. Seattle, vs. UNLV, vs. Notre Dame, vs. Pittsburgh (neutral)

Hello and goodbye Stanford. Just as the Cardinal were entering the NCAA Tournament conversation, they immediately get taken out thanks to a last-second loss to Pittsburgh in the ACC tournament opening round. Stanford needed to win, and as a result, sees itself taken out of the March Madness picture.

Oklahoma

  • Record: 17-14 (7-11)
  • NET Ranking: 54
  • Quad 1 record: 3-9
  • Projected seed: Next out
  • Quality wins: at Vanderbilt
  • Bad losses: vs. Arizona State (neutral), at Mississippi State, at South Carolina

Stanford's loss opens the door for another team to join the first four out, and that honor goes to Oklahoma. While the Sooners don't have a great resume, they've been winning, and that's something not many bubble teams can say. With four straight wins, Oklahoma has to extend it to at least six to move up the conversation.

Next game: vs. South Carolina (Wednesday, SEC tournament first round)

Minor's late putback gives 15-seed Pitt 64-63 win over Stanford in opener of ACC Tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Damarco Minor followed his own miss to score with 0.7 seconds left and give 15th-seeded Pittsburgh a 64-63 win over 10-seed Stanford in the opening game of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday.

Minor finished just 2-of-10 shooting, missing all seven of his 3-point attempts, but sent the Panthers (13-19) into the second round against seventh-seeded NC State on Wednesday.

After Ebuka Okorie gave Stanford the lead on a three-point play with 26.2 seconds remaining, Minor missed a 3-pointer but the Panthers came up with the ball after a scramble. Minor missed a short jumper in the paint but put in the game-winner.

Okorie, coming in as the nation's second-leading freshman scorer at 23.1 points per game, finished with 14 for Stanford (20-12). Benny Gealer scored 11 points and AJ Rohosy had 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

There were in 11 lead changes and four ties with Pitt prevailing on the strength of 20-7 advantage on the offensive boards, outscoring Stanford 25-7 in second-chance points and by 12 in the paint.

Pitt broke a tie by scoring the final eight points of the first half for a 31-23 lead. Stanford rallied to take a lead five times in the second half.

The Cardinal had beaten the Panthers 75-67 on Feb. 25 at home to start a four-game win streak heading into the tournament.

Up next

Pitt: The Panthers lost 81-72 at home to NC State on Jan. 24 in their only regular-season meeting.

Stanford: The loss looks to have ended the Cardinal's NCAA hopes as they await their postseason fate.

Timberwolves computer picks

Anthony Edwards Under 29.5 points (-110)

Projection: 28.4 points

Starting SGs haven’t had much success against the Los Angeles Lakers on the road this season, shooting just 37.1% from the field, which is the third-lowest in the NBA. Anthony Edwards has also stayed Under 29.5 points in four of his last 10 games.

span style="font-size: 14px;"🔥/span spanBet edwards Now at bet365!/span

Julius Randle Over 6.5 rebounds (-110)

Projection: 6.5 rebounds

The Minnesota Timberwolves should see extra chances against the Lakers, who’ve played at the 7th-fastest pace over the last five games.

Julius Randle has also cleared 6.5 rebounds in seven of his last 10 games.

span style="font-size: 14px;"🔥/span spanBet randle Now at bet365!/span

Donte DiVincenzo Over 2.5 3-pointers (-120)

Projection: 2.8 3-pointers

The Timberwolves have been strong from deep on the road this season, knocking down 14.5 threes per game, which is the sixth-highest mark in the league. That trend lines up well for Donte DiVincenzo, who has gone Over 2.5 made threes in six of his last 10 games.

span style="font-size: 14px;"🔥/span spanBet Divincenzo Now at bet365!/span

Lakers computer picks

LeBron James Over 18.5 points (+100)

Projection: 19.7 points

The Lakers have been rolling offensively, ranking sixth in scoring over the last five games while also playing at the seventh-fastest pace in the league during that span.

The Timberwolves haven’t slowed things down either, sitting eighth in pace over their last 25 games — a setup that should create plenty of scoring chances.

That’s good news for LeBron James, who has cleared 18.5 points in seven of his last 10 games.

span style="font-size: 14px;"🔥/span spanBet james Now at bet365!/span

Luka Doncic Over 7.5 assists (-140)

Projection: 8.4 assists

Luka Dončić has cleared the 7.5 assist line in five of his last 10 games, and the matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves gives him a solid path to reach that mark again tonight.

His usage naturally leads to high assist opportunities, especially when he draws double teams and kicks the ball out to shooters.

Timberwolves often send extra help toward elite scorers and strong ball handlers like Dončić, which will lead to open looks on the perimeter or easy dump-offs inside.

span style="font-size: 14px;"🔥/span spanBet doncic Now at bet365!/span

Deandre Ayton Over 6.5 rebounds (-112)

Projection: 7.1 rebounds

Deandre Ayton has cleared 6.5 rebounds in seven of his last 10 games, and this matchup with the Timberwolves can also help boost those chances.

Minnesota often plays through perimeter creators like Edwards, which leads to a high volume of jump shots. More perimeter attempts typically translate into longer rebounds and additional chances for opposing bigs to clean the glass.

Luka Doncic fined for making money sign towards refs

The NBA is taking action after Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic's latest interaction with officials.

At the 4:35 mark of the third quarter in the Lakers' 110-97 win over the New York Knicks on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena, Doncic attempted to draw a charge on Knicks forward Mohamed Diawara on a fast break, but no foul was called and the Knicks got a transition layup.

While still laying on the floor, Doncic rubbed his fingers together on both hands, making the universal money sign.

Two days later, Doncic has been fined $50,000 for "directing an inappropriate and unprofessional gesture toward a game official," NBA executive vice president and head of basketball operations James Jones announced via a statement released by the league on Tuesday.

This is the latest instance of Doncic butting heads with referees. On March 6, he received his 15th technical foul of the season, putting him just one call away from an automatic one-game suspension. He's currently the player with the second-most technicals in the NBA, behind only Dillion Brooks.

Luka Doncic stats

Gesture aside, Doncic played as well as he has all season in Sunday's game, scoring 35 points on 44% shooting with eight rebounds and four assists. His season averages are on par with his career numbers and his 32.5 points per game leads the NBA, positioning himself to win the scoring title and as a legitimate contender in the MVP race.

Luka Doncic fined $50,000 by NBA for 'inappropriate' gesture toward official

Lakers star Luka Doncic was fined $50,000 on Tuesday for directing an "inappropriate and unprofessional gesture toward a game official" during the Lakers' win over the New York Knicks on Sunday, the NBA announced.

The moment came during the third quarter when Doncic didn't get the charge call after stepping in front of Knicks forward Mohamed Diawara in transition. Diawara dumped off a pass to Josh Hart for an easy layup, while Doncic, lying flat on his back under the basket, looked at the closest official and rubbed his fingers together as if flashing money.

Doncic was not penalized during the game, which the Lakers won 110-97, but he has had his battles with referees this season. With 15 technical fouls, he is just one away from a mandatory one-game suspension. He is one technical foul behind league leader Dillon Brooks.

Doncic did later draw a charge in the game. He has drawn a career-high 12 charges this season, which ranks third on the team. The Lakers lead the NBA in charges drawn with 53, led by Marcus Smart's 16 and Austin Reaves' 14.

"Just trying to copy Marcus and AR," Doncic said.

No. 12 seed Arizona State fends off Baylor’s late surge for an 83-79 Big 12 Tournament win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pig Johnson had 19 points, Andrij Grbovic scored 14 and No. 12 seed Arizona State turned away a second-half run by Baylor for an 83-79 victory over the No. 13 seed Bears in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on Tuesday.

Santiago Trouet added 13 points and nine rebounds, Noah Meeusen scored 12 points and Massamba Diop had 11 for the Sun Devils (17-15), who advanced to play fifth-seeded Iowa State in the second round on Wednesday.

Cameron Carr led all scorers with 25 points and Isaac Williams IV had 15 before fouling out for the Bears (16-16), who are staring at their first non-winning season since 2006-07. Tounde Yessoufou also had 14 points but was 0 for 5 from 3-point range.

Every indication is that Arizona State intends to move on from coach Bobby Hurley after this season, when his contract is up. But his team apparently has every intention of pushing off that coaching change as long as possible.

After a couple of late-season wins over Utah and No. 14 Kansas, the Sun Devils jumped ahead early on Baylor, which beat them just a couple of weeks ago in Waco, Texas. They built a double-digit lead midway through the first half and led 44-35 at the break.

Baylor trailed by as many as 15 in the second half before it began to chip away at its deficit, at one point scoring on nine consecutive trips down the floor. By the time Diop accidentally tipped Dan Skillings Jr.'s miss into his own bucket, the Bears closed to within 67-64 with 6:01 remaining in the game.

Trouet answered at the other end for Arizona State, though, and Williams fouled out moments later on a drive to the basket. The Sun Devils promptly ran off eight consecutive points, building a lead they could take to the finish.

Up next

Arizona State has quick turnaround before playing the Cyclones in the second round.

Baylor will miss out on the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven editions.

Cavalier expected to return to lineup shortly

CLEVELAND, OHIO - APRIL 20: Jarrett Allen #31 celebrates with Max Strus #1 of the Cleveland Cavaliers during the second quarter of game one of the Eastern Conference First Round Playoffs against the Orlando Magic at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on April 20, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio. Max Strus suffered a Jones fracture on his left foot in late August. Initially, the timeline was shaping up that he would make a return to the floor within three to four months. Well, here we are in March, and Strus is reportedly going to make his long-awaited return shortly.

In a story posted on The Athletic by Joe Vardon highlighting Max Strus’s community work in Cleveland, an injury update was hidden between the lines. Vardon wrote that Strus could be returning to the court “within the next week.”

Reintegrating someone like Strus is a good problem to have, as his ability on ball combined with his perimeter shooting is a boon for any team. With the Cavaliers making serious moves at the deadline, there are a lot of things that have changed since Strus last donned the Wine and Gold.

There are many interesting lineup combinations and questions that bringing Strus back in the fold introduces. How will the Cavaliers balance ramping Strus back up to playing shape while also configuring the bench minutes for the postseason? How will Strus play with James Harden, and will it benefit Strus to have Harden setting up the opportunities?

The obvious question is whose minutes will be impacted the most by the return of Strus? The Cavaliers’ wing room currently has many players who feel they deserve playing time, with Jaylon Tyson, Keon Ellis, Dean Wade, Nae’Qwan Tomlin, and now Max Strus. Tomlin has already been weaned out of his minutes over the last month or so. Where does Strus land in that pecking order?

These are fascinating and important decisions for the Cavaliers’ coaching staff as they prepare for the postseason.

Strus has remained a frequent topic of discussion despite his absence this season. In many ways, he has been viewed as the final missing piece of this version of the Cavaliers. With his return now on the horizon, the team will finally move beyond the hypothetical scenario of what this roster could look like at full strength.

That’s always been a lot of expectation to place on the return of one player.

Still, Strus has previously established himself as an emotional and competitive tone-setter for the Cavaliers. Regardless of what his on-court production looks like over the final stretch of the season, his presence could prove to be a meaningful addition as Cleveland turns its focus toward its postseason ambitions.

Raptors vs Rockets Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

Want to get more Covers content? Add us as a preferred source on your Google account here.

The Toronto Raptors take care of business against bad teams, but against good ones... not so much.

Tonight, they visit the Houston Rockets, who would qualify as a good team, ranking sixth in the NBA in net rating.

My Raptors vs. Rockets predictions and NBA picks break down why it will be more of the same when these teams tip off at the Toyota Center in Houston, at 8:00 pm ET on Tuesday, March 10.

Raptors vs Rockets prediction

Raptors vs Rockets best bet: Rockets -5 (-110)

Despite sitting in a playoff spot, it’s clear the Toronto Raptors haven’t yet unlocked how to be a truly good team.

They play great defense (sixth in defensive rating) and have a solid starting lineup, but the team lacks depth and rim protection.

Against teams currently in the Top 10 of net rating, the Raps are 6-17 straight up and 8-15 against the spread, with five of the outright wins coming against early-season versions of Cleveland and Charlotte.

The Houston Rockets have their problems, but rank sixth in net rating, and Alperen Sengun will be a matchup nightmare.

Raptors vs Rockets same-game parlay

The Raptors will keep this game close with their Top-10 defense, and the Rockets rank eighth in defensive rating. Both teams are also in the bottom third in pace, so I like the Under here.

The Rockets' length and size will be a problem for Toronto throughout the game, allowing them to pull away late. Houston also has an edge on the glass, leading the NBA in rebounding rate.

All-Star Alperen Sengun will be too much for a slow-looking Jakob Poeltl.

Raptors vs Rockets SGP

  • Rockets -5
  • Under 219.5
  • Alperen Sengun Over 9.5 rebounds

Our "from downtown" SGP: Double Trouble

The Raptors miss a lot of shots, so there will be a lot of boards up for grabs for the great rebounding Rockets. And with the Rockets' size, Poeltl should get more run tonight.

Raptors vs Rockets SGP

  • Alperen Sengun double-double
  • Amen Thompson double-double
  • Jakob Poeltl double-double

Raptors vs Rockets odds

  • Spread: Raptors +5 | Rockets -5
  • Moneyline: Raptors +165 | Rockets -200
  • Over/Under: Over 219.5 | Under 219.5

Raptors vs Rockets betting trend to know

The Raptors have hit the game total Under in 33 of their last 50 games for +14.30 Units and a 26% ROI. Find more NBA betting trends for Raptors vs. Rockets.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs LA Lakers Preview:

Tonight's matchup marks the third and final meeting of the season between the two teams. The Lakers won the first two contests in October.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming off a 119-92 loss to the Orlando Magic last Saturday. Their 92 points were the second-fewest scored this season. Additionally, Minnesota finished with season lows in field-goal percentage (35.7%) and three-point percentage (22.5%).

Despite the loss, the Timberwolves are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Anthony Edwards is on pace for career-highs in scoring (29.6ppg) and shooting marks. The sixth-year guard has nine games this season with over 40 points.

The Timberwolves currently sit third in the Western Conference.

After winning five of their last six games, including the last two, the Lakers are fifth in the Western Conference, just one game behind the Timberwolves for the third.

However, the Lakers have played just 18 games with their Big Three: Luka Doncic, Lebron James, and Austin Reaves. James has missed the last two games and is listed as questionable for tonight.

NBA fines Lakers' Luka Doncic $50,000 for gesture toward official in game against the Knicks

NEW YORK (AP) — Luka Doncic has been fined $50,000 for making a gesture toward an official during the Lakers' 110-97 win over the Knicks, the NBA announced Tuesday.

The incident occurred with 4:35 remaining in the third quarter on Sunday when Doncic fell backward after contact from Knicks forward Mohamed Diawara, who was driving to the basket. Doncic threw his hands up and did a “money” gesture toward the official by rubbing his fingers together.

Diawara shoveled the ball to Josh Hart, who scored the layup and cut the Knicks' deficit to 74-65.

The fine makes up roughly 0.109% of Doncic's $46 million salary this season.

Doncic went on to score next for the Lakers and finished with a game-high 35 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Lakers (39-25) host the Timberwolves (40-24) on Tuesday night.

It’s been tough to count on the Golden State Warriors this season, but the formbook suggests they’ll like tonight’s matchup against the Chicago Bulls.

Golden State has won eight of the last 10 meetings between these teams, and my Bulls vs Warriors predictions point to Chicago’s Josh Giddey as the only obstacle to a similar script on Tuesday.

Get the lowdown on this March 10 battle with my free NBA picks and betting angles.

Bulls vs Warriors prediction

Bulls vs Warriors best bet: Josh Giddey Over 8.5 assists (-112)

The Chicago Bulls have been racking up losses, but that hasn't stopped Josh Giddey from continuing to deliver standout numbers. He’s coming off a triple-double at the weekend, and he’s dished 9+ assists in four straight outings.

Giddey’s playmaking goes up a notch on the road, and it helps that Chicago ranks eighth in the NBA in 3-point percentage this season.

With the Bulls playing with tanking freedom this month, the Aussie is on pace to match his 9.8 assists per game mark from November. I’m not scared off by his recent ankle issue, especially against a Golden State Warriors team that allowed 119 points in Utah last night.

Bulls vs Warriors same-game parlay

Although the Bulls have the rest advantage, I’m trusting the Warriors’ impressive 19-13 home record and the motivation to make amends for last night’s disappointing loss. Meanwhile, Chicago is 2-8 SU in its past 10 games.

Brandin Podziemski has a Giddey-like impact for Golden State, and that should translate to another do-it-all stat line. The Warriors guard has hauled in 7+ rebounds in eight of his last nine contests and drained 3+ triples in four straight outings.

Bulls vs Warriors SGP

  • Warriors moneyline
  • Brandin Podziemski Over 6.5 rebounds
  • Brandin Podziemski Over 2.5 threes

Our "from downtown" SGP: Enter Sant-man

Podziemski and Gui Santos are keeping the long hair/headband combo alive, and this SGP taps into their expanded roles for a Warriors squad missing Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler.

There’s also substance to go with the style, as the pair combined for 29 points and 16 rebounds last night.

Bulls vs Warriors SGP

  • Brandin Podziemski Over 6.5 rebounds
  • Brandin Podziemski Over 2.5 threes
  • Gui Santos Over 15.5 points
  • Gui Santos Over 7.5 rebounds

Bulls vs Warriors odds

  • Spread: Bulls +6 (-110) | Warriors -6 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Bulls +195 | Warriors -240
  • Over/Under: Over 227.5 (-110) | Under 227.5 (-110)

Guyer's 21 points lead Green Bay to 57-49 win in Horizon women's title game and 21st NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jenna Guyer scored 21 points, Maddy Skorupski added 13 and Green Bay won its third straight Horizon League Tournament championship, pulling away from Youngstown State for a 57-49 victory on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Phoenix (25-8) advanced to its 21st NCAA Tournament by outscoring the second-seeded Penguins 17-10 in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game.

Guyer, the conference player of the year, was 7-of-11 shooting and 6 of 7 at the free-throw line. Skorupski had five steals and six rebounds.

Paulina Hernandez scored 12 points, Sophia Gregory added 11 and Casey Santoro had nine points and nine rebounds for the Penguins (24-9), who were vying for their first Horizon tourney title in their 25 years in the league.

Guyer scored the first five points in a 9-0 fourth-quarter run and Green Bay opened up an eight-point lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. The teams exchanged 3-pointers then Skorupski, who moments earlier made a diving save on the other end of the floor, hit a couple free throws for a 10-point lead — the game's largest — with 43.1 seconds left.

Trailing by three at halftime, Green Bay's Meghan Schultz scored the first five points and seven total in the third quarter. Kristina Ouimette hit a couple of late midrange jumpers and the Phoenix took a 40-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

After shooting 52% in the first half and taking a 28-25 lead at the break, the Penguins finished at 38%, as did Green Bay. The Phoenix had 10 more points off turnovers and nine more at the free-throw line.

Grizzlies vs 76ers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

Want to get more Covers content? Add us as a preferred source on your Google account here.

The Memphis Grizzlies continue their East Coast road trip tonight against the Philadelphia 76ers, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

Jaylen Wells continues to thrive, and with Philly depleted, I’m eyeing him to show out in my Grizzlies vs. 76ers predictions.

Read more in my NBA picks for Tuesday, March 10.

Grizzlies vs 76ers prediction

Grizzlies vs 76ers best bet: Jaylen Wells Over 13.5 points (-120)

There’s been lots of drama surrounding the Memphis Grizzlies this season, but Jaylen Wells is a clear bright spot for the future. The youngster is averaging 12.7 ppg, and he’s put up 17.2 points per contest in March so far.

While Memphis lost on Monday, Wells had another impressive showing, pouring in 17 points. He’s hit the Over in four of his last five appearances, even scoring 24 last week against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Wells is averaging 13.9 ppg on the road compared to 11.9 at home, and he had 14 points earlier this season against Philly, who are without several key players here.

Grizzlies vs 76ers same-game parlay

Olivier-Maxence Prosper has been shooting the triple well lately. While he only takes 2.2 attempts per night, draining 0.9 for a 40% clip.

He’s cashed the Over in three straight, and the volume has been higher. Prosper has taken at least four treys in each of those games.

GG Jackson is averaging 11 ppg, and that number has shot up to 15 ppg in March. The youngster is coming off an 18-point showing against Brooklyn, and he’s hit the Over in points in two of his last three contests.

Grizzlies vs 76ers SGP

  • Jaylen Wells Over 13.5 points
  • Olivier-Maxence Prosper Over 1.5 threes
  • GG Jackson Over 13.5 points

Our "from downtown" SGP: Threes pouring in

Wells has cashed the Over in three of his last four. Memphis just allowed the Nets to shoot 51% from deep, and with Philly depleted, Quentin Grimes and Kelly Oubre will get lots of shots.

Grizzlies vs 76ers SGP

  • Olivier-Maxence Prosper Over 1.5 threes
  • Jaylen Wells Over 2.5 threes
  • Quentin Grimes Over 2.5 threes
  • Kelly Oubre Over 2.5 threes

Grizzlies vs 76ers odds

  • Spread: Memphis +3 (-110) | Philadelphia -3 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Memphis +130 | Philadelphia -155
  • Over/Under: Over 227.5 (-110) | Under 227.5 (-110)

NBA Power Rankings: Race to top Thunder tightens, Pistons stumble

There’s a new (old?) team atop the USA TODAY Sports NBA power rankings.

As the NBA calendar turns to the final month of the regular season, races for playoff seeding are tightening.

In the East, the difference between the top two teams, the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics, is just 2 ½ games. In the West, that margin between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs is only 3 games.

But there’s also a glut of teams in the middle of the Eastern Conference vying to climb out of the play-in picture, all of which points to a thrilling finish in the 2025-26 regular season.

Here are USA TODAY Sports’ NBA power rankings after Week 18 of the 2025-26 regular season:

USA TODAY Sports NBA power rankings

Note: Records and stats through March 9. Parentheses show movement from last week’s rankings.

NBA Week 19 power rankings: Top 10

1. Oklahoma City Thunder, 51-15 (+1)

2. San Antonio Spurs, 47-17 (+1)

3. Detroit Pistons, 45-18 (-2)

4. Boston Celtics, 43-21 (—)

5. Minnesota Timberwolves, 40-24 (+1)

6. New York Knicks, 41-25 (-1)

7. Cleveland Cavaliers, 40-25 (— )

8. Houston Rockets, 39-24 (—)

9. Los Angeles Lakers, 39-25 (+1)

10. Denver Nuggets, 39-26 (-1)

The Pistons have picked a terrible time to sputter. For the first time this season, Detroit is on a four-game losing streak, and the Pistons have lost those games by an average margin of 8.0 points. One of those losses came against the 17-win Nets. Detroit’s defensive rating in the last four games? It’s 119.7, which ranks 25th in the NBA. Compare that to the team’s overall defensive rating this season: 108.9, which ranks second in the league.

That has opened the door for the Thunder to reclaim their spot as the top team in the NBA. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Oklahoma City are doing this with mounting injuries, and SGA is coming for his second-consecutive Most Valuable Player award.

Not only that, but the return of Jayson Tatum has given the Celtics a massive boost, and with Boston sitting just 2 ½ games back of Detroit, the Celtics may very well make a push for the top seed in the East. Boston, according to Tankathon.com, has the third-easiest remaining schedule in the NBA.

NBA Week 19 power rankings: Nos. 11-20

11. Phoenix Suns, 37-27 (+1)

12. Miami Heat, 36-29 (+3)

13. Orlando Magic, 35-28 (+1)

14. Toronto Raptors, 36-27 (-1)

15. Los Angeles Clippers, 32-32 (+4)

16. Atlanta Hawks, 31-31 (—)

17. Philadelphia 76ers, 34-30 (-4)

18. Charlotte Hornets, 32-33 (-1)

19. Golden State Warriors, 32-32 (-1)

20. Portland Trail Blazers, 31-34 (—)

The most exciting race in the NBA? It might be the fight for the No. 5 and 6 seeds in the Eastern Conference, where six teams (Raptors, Magic, Heat, 76ers, Hawks, Hornets) have a legitimate shot to climb into those spots.

The team with the most momentum in that group is Miami, which is on a five-game winning streak. In the absence of All-Star Norman Powell, Tyler Herro has returned to form and the Heat have the NBA’s top offensive rating (123.3 points per 100 possessions) over the last five games. The key will be to keep that consistency and offensive flow once Powell returns. The Hawks have also won six consecutive and the Magic have four in a row. Things are tightening up.

And, with a huge win Monday, March 9 over the Knicks, the Clippers climbed back to .500 for the first time since Nov. 3, when L.A. was 3-3. Kawhi Leonard has been ultra consistent, and the moves for Darius Garland and Bennedict Mathurin (18.4 points per game since joining the Clippers) have stabilized the offense.

NBA Week 19 power rankings: Nos. 21-30

21. Milwaukee Bucks, 27-36 (—)

22. Chicago Bulls, 26-38 (+1)

23. Memphis Grizzlies, 23-40 (-1)

24. Dallas Mavericks, 21-43 (—)

25. New Orleans Pelicans, 21-45 (—)

26. Utah Jazz, 20-45 (—)

27. Brooklyn Nets, 17-47 (+2)

28. Washington Wizards, 16-47 (-1)

29. Indiana Pacers, 15-49 (-1)

30. Sacramento Kings, 15-50 (—)

Frankly, there’s not a whole lot to be excited about in this group, other than the upcoming draft. The bottom three teams in the West by record, the Pelicans, Jazz and Kings have each won their most recent games. That may not seem like much, but it is progress.

Consider this: as NBA reporter Tom Haberstroh (and later, Marc Stein) noted at one point last week, the bottom 10 teams in the league had combined to lose their last 44 games.

One team that hasn’t been looking to tank, however, the Bucks, have sputtered even as Giannis Antetokounmpo has returned. Milwaukee has lost five of their last six, as new addition Cam Thomas has been wildly inconsistent.

Milwaukee Bucks Poll: Turner or Sims?

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 11: Paolo Banchero #5 of the Orlando Magic drives to the basket against Myles Turner #3 and Jericho Sims #00 of the Milwaukee Bucks during the third quarter at Kia Center on February 11, 2026 in Orlando, Florida. Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NBA. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Bucks fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

We’re combining this week’s tracking poll with the Reacts survey, soliciting your opinions on the state of the Bucks’ frontcourt. Jack and I discussed Myles Turner’s usage by this coaching staff on the most recent episode of Deer Diaries, including how Jericho Sims continues receiving more minutes. That’s inversely proportional to their contract sizes, but the two bring pretty different skillsets on both ends at the five.

While Sims is definitely the switchier option, which is important, the Bucks are too small and routinely get abused on switches. I certainly wouldn’t abandon switching altogether because it’s needed, especially in late-game situations, but I contend that it shouldn’t be their base scheme, preferring drop coverage with Turner. We’ve seen next to no drop from the Bucks this year, and despite a younger team which should theoretically switch better, this is their worst defense since the Jason Kidd years.

When that was their primary defensive look in the Brook Lopez years, Milwaukee always ranked among the top defenders of roll men, even last season. This year, they’re in 29th. If Turner wasn’t being switched off every pick-and-roll, or he wasn’t heading to the corner every time up the floor offensively and thus needing to cover more ground to get back on defense, I don’t think they’d be that bad. Maybe even solid. Essentially, use Turner like Brook Lopez, as we assumed they would, then use Sims when you need to switch, which shouldn’t always be their look.

In this week’s Tuesday Tracker, weigh in on Turner vs. Sims. We’re also keeping an eye on the Pelicans, who keep moving up the standings and are just a game away from seventh in the lottery standings; how should that impact the Bucks, given the swap rights they hold? For reference, here are the chances Milwaukee ends up at various draft positions if they remain in 10th and New Orleans is either sixth or seventh, factoring in that the better pick ends up in The Big Easy (though it then becomes property of Atlanta) via the swap:
