Jalen Brunson set to return to Knicks lineup Sunday vs. Suns

It was reported earlier in the week that this could happen, and on Sunday it will become a reality.

Jalen Brunson is set to return to the Knicks lineup Sunday when New York hosts Phoenix, a story reported by Chris Haynes and multiple Knicks writers.

Earlier in the week, Brunson said he was cleared for basketball activities, the only question on his return was timing. With the Knicks on a back-to-back this weekend — they beat Atlanta Saturday — the real question was which one of the games he would play, because it was never going to be both.

Brunson would be a lock to make an All-NBA team this season except he has played in 61 games and needs to play at least 20 minutes in four more to reach the league's 65-game threshold to be eligible for postseason awards. The Knicks have five games remaining, including Sunday. Brunson is averaging 26.3 points a game this season with a 60.6% true shooting percentage, plus he's dishing out 7.4 assists a game.

Barring a highly unlikely total collapse in the season's final week, the Knicks will be the No. 3 seed in the East and host either Detroit or Milwaukee in the first round.

Expert picks & predictions for Sunday’s Suns vs. Knicks game

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans the Knicks to cover:

"The Suns have lost five straight games by double-digits, but this isn't the worst spot to back them as the Knicks have struggled since Jalen Brunson went down with an injury. New York is 4-1 over the last five games, but three of the four wins came against non-playoff teams. Phoenix needs to find its stride and with five straight losses, desperation will set in. I lean toward the Suns at +7.5 or better."

"With three double-digit victories against Washington this season, there's no reason to think it won't happen again but laying -20.5 points in an NBA game is tough to do. I'd look at a live bet on the Celtics or a better number on the Wizards if this is truly a blowout."

Expert picks & predictions for Sunday’s Kings vs. Cavaliers game

NBC Sports Bet Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans Evan Mobley Over 2.5 Blocks and Steals:

"The Defensive Player of the Year race is heavily favored toward Draymond Green, so Evan Mobley will have to make a strong impression to close the regular season. Mobley is coming off a three-block and one-steal performance versus San Antonio and recorded two or more blocks in six of the past seven games. In most games, this prop is juiced heavily or 3.5, but because he had one total block and steal, the value on this is an even -115 either way. I have to lean the Over for Mobley."

Draymond vs. Sengün is matchup to watch in Warriors-Rockets game

Draymond vs. Sengün is matchup to watch in Warriors-Rockets game originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Two days after managing a virtual standoff against the NBA’s most skilled big man, Draymond Green’s Defensive Player of the Year tour/campaign returns Sunday against an opponent that poses similar, if less refined, problems.
Green is going from Denver’s Nikola Jokić, a three-time MVP, to Houston’s Alperen Sengün, who only is 22 years old but already is productive and skillful enough that he is drawing early comparisons to Jokić.

Green and Sengün will be central figures when the Warriors (46-31) and Rockets (51-27) convene at Chase Center for the fifth and final time this season. Coverage on NBC Sports Bay Area begins at 4:30 p.m., with tipoff scheduled for 5:30.

The game features two of the league’s hottest teams, as the Warriors have won 14 of their last 17 games and the Rockets have won 14 of their last 16.

Jokić played a strong individual game against Green on Friday at Chase, scoring 33 points on 13-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-7 from distance, while recording nine assists. But he was minus-4 over 37 minutes. Green was plus-14 over 30 minutes in a 114-108 victory.

Sengün is not yet an MVP candidate, but the comparisons to Jokić are natural, stemming from his gift for scoring and crafty passing. They’re both 6-foot-11, but Sengün is eight years younger and 45 pounds lighter.

Sengün is building quite the resumé, as this season he became the 16th-fastest player to post 4,000 points, 2,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists, reaching those totals in 256 games. He also made his first NBA All-Star game.

Averaging 19.2 points per game, Sengün is second on the Rockets in scoring (behind Jalen Green’s 21.6) and third among NBA centers, behind only Jokić and New York Karl-Anthony Towns. Sengün is 10th in the league in rebounding, and only nine players shoot more free throws.

Though Golden State rookie Quinten Post will have opportunities against Sengün, the primary assignment falls to Green, whose priority will be trying to frustrate Sengün’s attempts to score. The Rockets are barely above .500 (10-9) when he’s held under 15 points.

In seven career games against Green and the Warriors, Sengün is averaging 13.9 points, on 52.2-percent shooting from the field.

This is the Warriors’ fourth consecutive game against a team they trail in the Western Conference standings. They won the first three, beating the Grizzlies, Lakers and Nuggets, in the process moving from sixth place to fifth.

The Rockets need two wins over their final four to clinch a second-place finish in the West.

Plaschke: I was wrong. Drafting Bronny James was a win for the Lakers

Los Angeles, CA - March 20: Lakers guard Bronny James, #9, right, drives to the hoop as Bucks guard AJ Green, #20 defends in the first half at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles Thursday, March 20, 2025. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times)
Lakers guard Bronny James drives to the hoop against Bucks guard AJ Green during the first half of a game at Crypto.com Arena last month. The rookie son of LeBron James had a season-high 17 points in a loss. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times)

He has made 17 baskets.

He has played in the equivalent of less than three full games.

Seventeen Lakers have spent more time on the court. Sixteen Lakers have scored more points.

He has been but a speck of lint on the Lakers' lapel, a bit of dust at the end of the Lakers' bench, a small and irrelevant bystander in the Lakers' long and arduous journey.

Yet, admit it, Bronny James has been huge.

The nepo baby whose arrival last summer was ripped across the NBA landscape has quietly risen above the criticism and gradually drowned out the noise.

The famous son whose selection as the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA draft was trashed in this space as “not very smart” has actually become part of something that borders on ingenious.

I was wrong. I was very wrong. There have been few things more right about this season than the saga of Bronny James.

He hasn’t made an NBA impact, but he hasn’t been a distraction, either. Arguably the league’s most disliked and discounted rookie when the season began, he has won over fans, impressed teammates, inspired his father, and silenced the media.

Shut me up, anyway.

Ten months ago, when the Lakers acquired the oldest son of their best player, I wrote that the move was an insensitive joke.

Ten months ago, I had the hottest of hot takes.

“It’s not very smart,” I wrote. “And, for two of the main people involved, it’s not very fair.”

I concluded my screed with, “Bronny is coming … the circus is starting.”

Turns out, the circus never arrived. The reality is, in one of its finest efforts, the Lakers' management handled the sensitive situation with nimble smarts.

Everything about this strange arrangement has worked, every fear has been squelched, all awkwardness has disappeared, and the Lakers have been left with a happily productive father and a gratefully improving son.

Bronny James has been their most improved player simply by morphing from a punch line into, well, a player.

“Since Day 1, I've just been impressed with the person that he is,” coach JJ Redick told reporters last month. “And to deal with … frankly, bull— because of who his dad is and just keep a level head about it and be a class act says a lot about him, says a lot about that family …”

Maybe it was truly cool with Redick from Day 1, but for the rest of the league, Bronny’s arrival raised a giant red flag. After all, this was a 19-year-old kid who missed most of his only college season while recovering from a heart attack, and suddenly he was given a Lakers uniform and a guaranteed contract?

This initially seemed like at least partly a publicity stunt designed to enable Bronny and LeBron to become the first father-son duo to play together in the NBA. Except the Lakers surprisingly didn’t milk it, and actually enabled it when relatively few people were watching.

In the second quarter of the season opener against Minnesota in late October, with the town’s attention focused on the Dodgers, father and son checked in together and played nearly three minutes. Bronny returned to the bench for the rest of the night and that was that.

History made. Moving on. The Lakers won the game and Bronny barely made a ripple. The tone had been set. Nothing to see here.

“[I] tried not to focus on everything that’s going on around me, and tried to focus on going in as a rookie and not trying to mess up,” Bronny told reporters after his debut.

He was just trying not to mess up. That was his mantra the entire season, a pledge filled with the respectful humility that framed his image into that of a likable kid who was just here to hoop.

He was a nepo baby, but he didn’t act like it. He was the most famous son of the most famous basketball player in the world, yet he quietly behaved like just another lucky stiff.

This attitude quickly became apparent to the fans, who began cheering for him as if he was the team’s lovable mascot, which, in a sense, he was.

The consistently popular chant would surface late in Lakers blowouts, when arenas would fill with, “We want Bronny!” The league’s most criticized rookie became the most embraced, and even though he played in only 22 games and was on the court for double-digit minutes in only four of them, those cheers resonated.

Was he good? What did you expect? No, by NBA standards, with few rare exceptions, he wasn’t great. In one nightmarish game in Philadelphia, when he went 0-for-5 shooting while being consistently burned on defense in 15 awful minutes, he was miles from great.

But by fair standards — playing where he belonged in the developmental G League as a teenager with essentially no college experience and a history of heart failure — he was promising.

He played 18 of 50 games for the South Bay Lakers, and his last 11 were strong as he averaged 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. He scored 30 or more points three times, including 39 points in 38 minutes in a late March win against the Santa Cruz Warriors.

While standing on the court after that game, the rarely interviewed Bronny offered a compelling glimpse into his situation.

When asked by SpectrumSportsNet what he had been trying to prove, he said, “Just that I belong out there. That’s all I’m trying to prove. A lot of people say I don’t, but I just come out, work every day, try to get better every day and prove myself every day.”

So, yeah, he admitted, he’s felt the heat.

“All the criticism that’s thrown my way, it’s just amazing to shut all that down and keep going,” he said.

All this time, his father was watching. In fact, perhaps the biggest takeaway of the first year of the son’s appearance is the enormous effect it has had on the father.

LeBron has openly cheered for Bronny, as evident after the 39-point game when LeBron tweeted a note of support that read, in part, “SMILE THROUGH IT ALL … KEEP GOING!!”

Yes, it was in all caps.

LeBron has also fought for his son, accosting ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith at courtside of a recent Lakers game and rebuking him for making his criticism too personal.

In all, the appearance of Bronny has energized and invigorated LeBron, who is on pace to play 71 games, equaling the most since he came to Los Angeles seven years ago.

Statistically, LeBron is playing about as well as he’s ever played as a Laker. Defensively, he’s playing even better, as if every night he is trying to set an example for his son.

His emotional investment in this season was clear from his first comments after he and Bronny played together.

“That moment, us being at the scorer’s table together and checking in together, it’s a moment I’m never going to forget,” LeBron said. “No matter how old I get, no matter how my memory may fade as I get older or whatever, I will never forget that moment.”

Those moments have stacked upon each other in creating a vastly different equation than the one most imagined for Bronny and LeBron. Everyone thought the father would inspire his son. Instead, it’s been the other way around.

“I missed a lot of Bronny's points because of my career over the course of his childhood and AAU games and high school and for me to see all the buckets he's had as an NBA player with us, to be here with him, is super special,” James told reporters in New York in early February. “It’s probably the greatest thing I've ever been a part of.”

Nearly two months later, Bronny was scoring 17 in a short-handed loss to Milwaukee, quietly handling his rare success with humility and grace, cementing what everyone had come to believe.

No matter what happens during the rest of the season, the forced, frantic shotgun marriage between Bronny James and the Lakers has been a blissful success.

“There's not really much I can do [about] people, random people, talking about me every day,” he told reporters. “Can't really do much about that, so I just go in the gym and work, put my head down and try to get better.”

After watching Bronny James do just that — head down, work hard, get better — one can actually describe his first Lakers season with four words that few previously dared to string together.

Like father, like son.

Lakers get big test against Thunder to open final week of regular season

LOS ANGELES, CA - APRIL 4, 2025: Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) and Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves (15) high-five each other after taking a commanding lead against the New Orleans Pelicans late in the fourth quarter at Crypto.com Arena on April 4, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.(Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times)

This isn’t quite the Lakers’ final exams, but it’s still one heck of a test.

They begin the final week of their regular season Sunday in Oklahoma City, facing the NBA’s best team, owners of the third-best offense and, by far, the league’s best defense.

And then they do it again Tuesday.

“It’s a great test. They’re obviously a really good team with probably the front-runner for MVP right now," Lakers guard Austin Reaves said. "So, a team that plays hard every possession and guards at a very high level. And then on the other end, they play with space. Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander] does what he does, but it’s a good test for us to match up with the No. 1 team in the West and see where we’re at right now and continue to try to prove that we’re a good team too.”

A scheduling quirk has the Lakers playing a pair of games on the road against the Thunder to kick off the final seven days of the regular season. It comes at a time when the Lakers are in a good position — third in the conference — but with little cushion.

Denver, Golden State, Memphis, Minnesota and the Clippers are within two games, and while the Lakers have tiebreak advantages over most, a tumble into the play-in round isn’t out of the question.

A winning week, 3-2, would guarantee the Lakers at least fifth place, while four wins would lock up home-court advantage for at least the first round. But the first win, one in Oklahoma City, is going to be toughest.

“'I’m glad that their team and their program, people are realizing how good that organization is and what they've built,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said Friday. “And I watch them a lot. They're really hard to score on. They have a number of high-level defenders.”

The Thunder’s defense is one of the few in the NBA with the personnel to match up with the Lakers’ stars, who are showing signs of finding rhythm with one another.

Luka Doncic bounced back from a rough game in a loss to the Warriors and a miserable first quarter Friday to get back in rhythm in a win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

LeBron James has now played eight games since missing two weeks because of a groin injury and his energy, efficiency and three-point stroke have been moving in the right direction.

Reaves is one of the hottest shooters in the league, having made 15 threes in his last two games, with James hyping him up in the locker room postgame Friday.

“LeBron throws me good passes, Luka throws me good passes and I just shoot it with confidence,” Reaves said. “That’s really it.”

The Lakers are catching the Thunder after a loss to the Rockets. It’s also the Thunder’s first chance to see Doncic on the Lakers after he and his previous team (Dallas, Wednesday’s opponent) knocked them out of last year’s playoffs.

“It was a very physical series. We were all very tired after that series, but it was fun. Definitely fun,” Doncic said. “OKC's a tough matchup. But those matchups are special. And like I said before, it's gonna be a big challenge for us. But also it's the games that, it's fun to play.”

Kawhi Leonard plays first back-to-back of season as Clippers keep pace in West race

They all realize what’s at stake and that having a healthy Kawhi Leonard gives the Clippers their best chance to win now when it matters so much in the jumbled Western Conference.

So on Saturday when Leonard played in back-to-back games for the first time in more than a year, it was clear how significant this game against the Dallas Mavericks was to the Clippers.

When Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said “we’re fighting for our lives” and that “right now we need all hands on deck,” it was clear that they were doing all in their power to stay alive for the sixth seed in the West, the automatic playoff spot, and avoid the NBA’s play-in tournament.

The Clippers are still in the hunt for a top-six spot because their big three of Leonard, James Harden and Ivica Zubac were the forces during their 135-104 win over the Mavericks at the Intuit Dome.

For Leonard to reach this point, the medical staff had to approve him playing in back-to-back games. He had 29 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes.

“Everything has been going well,” he said. “So we had discussions and we all thought it was a good time to play.

“Like I said, it was just about listening to them, about their scenarios, how they calculate things. And then just me listening and not trying to be a superhero and just trying to stay healthy, really. That’s my No. 1 goal, like I always said, for this year is coming out of this season healthy.”

Harden had a double-double with 29 points and 14 assists as the Clippers won their fourth straight game.

Zubac had his career-high 11th consecutive double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds, which gave him 4,238 boards as a Clipper and pushed him past Bob McAdoo for sole possession of fifth place on the franchise's all-time list. Zubac was 11 for 11 from the field while making all three of his free throws.

“Those three guys were really good tonight,” Lue said. “Just having a professional win to come out the second night of a back-to-back and play the way we did was pretty impressive.”

Anthony Davis led the Mavericks with 29 points and nine rebounds.

The Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies have identical records at 46-32, all of them a half-game behind fifth-seeded Golden State in the West. Minnesota is the sixth seed, the Clippers seventh and the Grizzlies eighth based on tiebreaks.

Leonard missed the first 34 games while recovering from a right knee injury. He played his first game Jan. 4 and had not played back-to-back contests since March 25, 2024.

“He’s been trying to play in them, but we were just making sure we did the right thing and were smart about it,” Lue said. “So, the time is here.”

Since Leonard played just 24 minutes Friday night against the Mavericks, he was well rested and had not put a lot of stress on his body. That made the decision much easier.

“He’s a bad dude on the court, both sides of the floor,” Zubac said. “And I was happy to see him play back to back. It’s been a long journey for him, but he worked his tail off."

The Clippers have two days off before they host San Antonio on Tuesday night. The Clippers' last home game is Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets in another back-to-back set.

“We’ll see when that time comes,” Leonard said about playing. “I’m about to focus on this win tonight and get some treatment and see how it goes the next few days.”

Knicks' Tom Thibodeau rebukes notion Jalen Brunson return will affect OG Anunoby's play

The Knicks have played admirably without Jalen Brunson since the All-Star point guard went down with a sprained ankle in early March.

After Saturday's dominant win over the Atlanta Hawks, the Knicks are 9-6 without their captain, and some players have elevated their play on the offensive end in their stead. This is especially true for OG Anunoby.

The 6-foot-7 wing is scoring at a torrid pace. Just over his last five games, Anunoby is averaging 26.6 points and entering Saturday with 5.2 free throws per game since Brunson's injury, showing how willing he is to drive to the hoop. But with Brunson expected to return Sunday against the Phoenix Suns, questions on how the offense will flow with their floor general back have popped up.

Following Saturday's win, Tom Thibodeau was asked if Anunoby's style will "have to change" once Brunson returns. The longtime Knicks coach pushed back.

"The notion of all that stuff, it's white noise," he said. "The game tells you what to do, you know? So, whose shot is it in transition? The open man, right? And if there's two on somebody, who shot is it, right? You have the responsibility as a primary scorer to make the right play. So, the notion that it has to be this way, that way, no. There has to be a willingness to sacrifice by everybody.

"The team has to come first. What's best for our team? What gives the team the best chance to win? And that's all everyone should be thinking about. They shouldn't be thinking about who's doing this, who's doing that. That's not the way this game works. If you care about winning, that stuff shouldn't matter."

A follow-up question to Thibodeau asked who "ends up getting the shot" with Brunson on the floor, and pointed to how during this stretch, Anunoby is "spending less time in the corners." Thibodeau pushed back even harder and broke down how he sees the responsibilities of everyone on the floor, whether Brunson is on the floor or not.

"No, [Anunoby] never spent exclusively… that notion's a bunch of garbage. I'll tell you another thing: I value the corners a lot more than most people because I know that's the most valuable spot on the floor," Thibodeau said. "He's all over the floor. That's the way he's scoring. That's the way everybody's scoring. So if you have a drive pass, pass who's supposed to be in the corner? It's drive and kick and if you're cutting and you're moving without the ball, which is what you're supposed to do, right?

"If you push the ball up, your first responsibility is to create pace. Your second responsibility is to create movement and everyone's supposed to read the man in front of them. So, if you're reading the man in front of you and he cuts, then you replace in front, right? That's the way this game works. So that's a bunch of excuse-making. And that's the way I see it."

Fiery exchanges aside, there's no denying how well-oiled the Knicks' offense has looked in stretches, especially on Saturday. Against the Hawks, the Knicks scored a season-high 78 points in the first half and had 32 assists, the 27th time this season they've hit the 30-assist mark. They accomplished that feat just 10 times a season ago.

Those extra passes were a key in Saturday's win, and Thibodeau is pleased with how the offense is humming just as Brunson is returning.

"I think it's huge, and to succeed in this league, you have to do it together," Thibodeau said. "You can't win at the highest level in this league individually, you have to do it collectively. So everyone had to be willing to sacrifice. I think offense is about execution. Everyone has a job to do. You have to go out there and do your job and you have to help each other.

"Everyone works together and hits the open man, pass up a good shot to get a great shot, but that willingness to be unselfish and play for each other is huge."

The Knicks hope to continue their winning ways Sunday against the Suns with Brunson on the court. The guard will have five games before the end of the regular season -- and the start of the playoffs -- to get reacclimated and prove that the Knicks' offense can continue to run like he'd never left.

Boston Celtics set new record for most 3-pointers made in a season

It was clear where this was headed on opening night, when the Boston Celtics hung a banner and then launched 61 3-pointers, making 29, on their way to routing the Knicks.

Friday night, Boston set the record for most 3-pointers made in a season — 1,364 — when Payton Pritchard knocked one down from beyond the arc early in the second quarter. By the end of the game, the Celtics had made 1,370 3-pointers, and they have five games remaining.

The previous record belonged to Stephen Curry and the 2022-23 Golden State Warriors.

The Celtics aren't done setting records from beyond the arc, even if everything isn't official yet. Utah holds the record for the most average 3-point shots made per game (16.7, during the 2020-21 season), but Boston will pass that at 17.9 per game. The most 3-pointers attempted by a team per game were the James Harden Rockets in 2018-19 at 45.4, but the Celtics are at 48.5 per game this season.

While the Celtics have shooting everywhere on the court — Jayson Tatum is taking 10 3-pointers a game but there is also Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday and on down the line — the real credit goes to Joe Mazzulla. The Celtics have led the league in 3-point attempts in each of Mazzulla's three seasons as the shot is central to his attack. It has worked, the Celtics have a ring and are the betting favorites to win another this year.

3 observations after Sixers' Grimes-led comeback falls just short vs. T-Wolves

3 observations after Sixers' Grimes-led comeback falls just short vs. T-Wolves  originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Sixers kept it tight all night Saturday against the Timberwolves.

However, their losing streak now sits at 11 games with four to go this season.

Minnesota pulled out a 114-109 win at Wells Fargo Center and improved to 46-32.

Four Sixers scored at least 16 points in Lonnie Walker IV, Quentin Grimes, Jared Butler and Guerschon Yabusele. Grimes was the team’s top scorer with 28 points.

Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards posted 37 points. Rudy Gobert had 23 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks.

The 23-55 Sixers were down eight players to start the night, including Joel Embiid (season-ending left knee surgery), Paul George (season-ending adductor and left knee injuries) and Tyrese Maxey (right finger sprain). Justin Edwards was ruled out after logging 11 minutes because of a rib contusion.

The Sixers will travel to Miami and face the Heat on Monday night. Here are observations on their loss to the T-Wolves:

Big-time Edwards poster on Bona

The first few minutes went decently for the Sixers. They took an 11-7 lead on a Justin Edwards three-pointer.

A few seconds prior, Minnesota’s Edwards had the highlight of the night.

He exploded for a fierce slam on Bona that created plenty of stunned faces in the stands. Ultimately, sometimes being on the wrong end of such plays is part of life as an aggressive NBA shot blocker.

Coming off of a fantastic 28-point night Thursday in the Sixers’ loss to the Bucks, Bona dealt with first-half foul trouble. He finished with four points, 10 rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in 25 minutes Playing his second game on a 10-day contract, Colin Castleton served as Bona’s backup and had six points, six rebounds and two assists.

Minnesota’s size advantages posed predictable issues for the Sixers. At halftime, the Timberwolves had major edges in second-chance points (12-2) and free throw attempts (18-4).

Good work by Walker off the bench

The Sixers began 3 for 15 from three-point range and struggled at times to create any open look until the dying seconds of the shot clock.

The T-Wolves also had a subpar shooting start, missing 13 of their first 17 long-distance jumpers. That helped the Sixers eat into their deficit after falling behind by 13 points.

Lonnie Walker IV played a strong second quarter, too. The first man off the Sixers’ bench attacked effectively off the dribble, spotted open teammates and generally made sound decisions.

Walker’s trending well in that department since returning from a concussion. Over his last four games, he’s recorded 20 assists and five turnovers.

Grimes makes T-Wolves sweat late

A put-back, buzzer-beating Gobert layup sent Minnesota into halftime with a 55-51 lead.

The Sixers trimmed their deficit by three points in the third quarter. They played active defense, forced regular turnovers and profited in the open floor. Grimes and Yabusele threw down crowd-pleasing fast-break dunks in the third and Grimes nailed a go-ahead three early in the fourth.

Minnesota then made a 12-0 run that featured back-to-back Edwards threes. With the T-Wolves’ superior star power, the game appeared just about over.

The Sixers weren’t quite done because they have Grimes, who’s often played like a star the past month.

He went on a late-game shotmaking spree, hitting three triples in a span of 74 seconds. Even when many of his jumpers are tightly contested, Grimes has shown he can catch fire. Two Yabusele free throws cut the Timberwolves’ lead to 104-103.

Edwards responded with a giant three, but Grimes and the Sixers maintained heavy pressure. Yet another Grimes jumper put the Sixers’ deficit at 111-109 with a little over 30 seconds left.

There was more drama to come.

Grimes was whistled for his sixth foul with 14.5 seconds left. Sixers head coach Nick Nurse challenged the call on Julius Randle and the officials changed the ruling on the floor to a no-call, with Minnesota retaining possession.

Edwards ended up having to shoot a deep, highly difficult turnaround three with the shot clock about to expire. He drilled it, finally sealing the Timberwolves’ win despite Grimes’ best efforts.

Knicks ride huge second quarter in dominant 121-105 win over Hawks

The Knicks used a 40-point second quarter to rout the Hawks in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon, 121-105.

All five Knicks starters scored in double figures and head coach Tom Thibodeau passed Pat Riley on the team's all-time wins list (224).

Here are the takeaways...

-The Knicks took an early punch from the Hawks, who got out to a 5-0 start. But the Knicks' defense clamped down and the combination of OG Anunoby and Josh Hart set the tone on offense. The duo drove to the hoop consistently, making easy layups and getting to the free-throw line.

New York got out to a sizeable double-digit lead for most of the first quarter, but turnovers and lackluster defense allowed the Hawks to cut the Knicks' lead to 38-31 after the first quarter. The Knicks had a balanced attack on offense, with Anunoby (11), Hart (8), Karl-Anthony Towns (7), Mikal Bridges (7) and Delon Wright (5) providing the scoring for the starters as the team shot 61 percent from the field. Unfortunately, the Hawks shot 57 percent in the frame.

-Towns would be the aggressor to start the second with Hart and Anunoby on the bench. The Knicks' big man scored the team's first five points and was consistently handling the ball at the top of the key. With eight minutes remaining in the second, Towns hurt his finger going for an offensive rebound and was in visible pain. Towns would head to the locker room to get it checked.

Towns would return after a few minutes, and just in time for the Knicks to go on an extended run. The Knicks' defense and the Hawks' inability to make shots led to a 30-plus point cushion for New York. Some lackadaisical defense by the Knicks allowed the Hawks to get some points back, but New York went into halftime up, 78-53. It's the most points the Knicks have scored in the first half this season and the most first-half points allowed by the Hawks this year.

The Knicks shot an insane 75 percent to Atlanta's 33 percent in the second quarter. Four of the Knicks' five starters were in double digits.

-The lax Knicks defense/offense continued early in the third, but a double-digit run pushed their lead back up to 33 points with eight minutes left. Everything went right for the Knicks in this quarter -- even a blocking foul called on Anunoby was overturned after review. New York entered the fourth quarter up 28 points and in full control.

New York maintained that lead for the duration of the game, with the Hawks only bringing it below a 20-point deficit with a few minutes to go.

Towns led the Knicks' scoring with 30 points, while Anunoby (24), Hart (16), Bridges (20) and Wright (10) rounded out the starter's scoring. Hart was one rebound shy of his 10th triple-double this season.

-Cam Payne made his return off the bench after missing four games with an ankle injury. In 21 minutes on the floor, the guard scored three points on 1-of-5 shooting.

Landry Shamet led the bench scoring with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting, all made shots coming from three.

Game MVP: Entire team

No individual stood out as the entire team took it to Atlanta. The team shot 54 percent overall from the field and 52 percent from three. The defense also held the Hawks to 47 percent shooting and 31 percent from three.

What's next

The Knicks head back home to host the Phoenix Suns at The Garden on Sunday, in what is expected to be Jalen Brunson's return. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
