With Brandon Sproat a step away, Mets could soon have a good rotation conundrum on their hands

"I think difficult decisions are a good thing."

The above quote came from David Stearns on Monday while he was speaking about the conundrum the Mets will be facing when Francisco Alvarez and Jeff McNeil return from the IL, which could come as soon as Friday.

In Alvarez and McNeil's absence, their replacements -- Luis Torrens and Luisangel Acuña -- have excelled, which could mean the kind of split playing time that perhaps wasn't envisioned when Alvarez and McNeil suffered their injuries during spring training.

But things happen. And plans change.

While not an imminent situation the Mets face, the club could have some tough (but good) choices to make with their starting rotation in the near future.

And though Stearns hasn't yet fielded a question about what the team will do when Brandon Sproat -- and later Nolan McLean -- are deemed ready, it's fair to believe he'd respond much like he did when discussing Alvarez and McNeil on Monday: "I think difficult decisions are a good thing."

As far as Sproat specifically, it will be a shock if he remains in Triple-A Syracuse all season if the Mets determine that he's ready for the majors. That's simply not how good teams operate.

When your top starting pitching prospect, who also happens to be the top prospect in your entire organization, is ready, you make room for him.

An old adage to cite at this point is that potentially tough decisions -- like the one the Mets could have with their rotation -- almost always find a way of working themselves out.

David Stearns
David Stearns / SNY

A pitcher or two currently in the rotation could start underperforming. There could be injuries. Roles could change.

But the Mets are in such good shape right now pitching-wise that doing this exercise makes sense. And that's even more impressive considering their rotation was their main question mark entering the season.

The results so far are a testament to the Mets' pitching lab, to pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, to Stearns' decision-making, and to the talent and work ethic of everyone currently in the starting rotation.

Consider the following:

  • Kodai Senga leads the National League with a 0.79 ERA and 483 ERA+. He has a 0.97 WHIP, and again looks like the pitcher who finished seventh in Cy Young voting in 2023
  • Clay Holmes' transition from reliever to starter hit some bumps early, but is humming along now. He has a 3.16 ERA, has yet to allow a home run this season, and has completed five or more innings in each of his last three starts
  • David Peterson has a 3.27 ERA (3.08 FIP) and a strikeout rate of 10.6 per nine
  • Tylor Megill has a 1.09 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. He has been overpowering at times, including on Monday against the Phillies, when he fired 5.1 shutout innings while striking out 10 and allowing just one hit
  • Griffin Canning has a 3.43 ERA, and has seemingly put his rough 2024 campaign behind him while under new tutelage

There's also the presence of Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, who are working their way back from their respective injuries and could be ready to rejoin the rotation around early June.

All of this led me to fire off a tweet on Monday where I suggested the Mets could be looking at a six-man rotation some point this summer that doesn't include Canning or Megill.

That tweet, which was met with understandable indignance by some, was not a commentary on Canning and Megill.

Rather, it had to do with an understanding that reinforcements (Manaea, Montas, Sproat, and perhaps McLean) are coming -- and that model organizations (which the Mets are) do not let 24-year-old top pitching prospects waste innings in the minors once they're ready for the majors.

The next sentence is one that the March version of myself would've thought was a crazy one to write. But like it or not, Sproat will be in the rotation at some point this season, bringing with him top-of-the-rotation upside.

The way McLean is pitching, he could force his way up to Queens this summer, too.

That means there's a scenario in the not-too-distant future where the Mets have nine legitimate big league starting pitchers for six spots.

As is noted above, things could easily change between now and then. But for the moment, the Mets are starting pitching-rich, and the decisions they might have to make soon would be both difficult and good.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Landen Roupp, Kumar Rocker, and Agustín Ramírez

As the early season dust has settled and more of the obvious breakout players and impact rookies are unavailable, we need to look a bit deeper to find gems on the waiver wire.

Fear not, becausethere are still a handful of players that are widely available and have the chance to be difference-makers in both the short and long term.

MLB: New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays
The Yankees and Mariners are the big risers this week while the Royals and Orioles are scuffling.

Here are three players that are under 40% rostered on Yahoo leagues that you should strongly consider adding.

If you want a larger list, Eric Samulski wrote his extended waiver wire piece on Sunday.

Landen Roupp, SP Giants

(28% Rostered on Yahoo)

Roupp’s rostership is criminally low for how impressive he’s looked so far this season. After a strong spring training, he beat out Hayden Birdsong for the Giants’ fifth starter spot and has one of the highest strikeout rates among all starters in the league at 31.2%.

That being said, he is a bit of a weird case and I suspect that’s why many are still weary to buy-in on him.

He has a funky, side-arm delivery that looks quite unorthodox on the mound. Check him out, it’s objectively weird.

Weird can be quite good though, as Roupp has shown so far.

He broke camp with the Giants last season as a reliever and walked eight batters in 13 2/3 innings before being demoted. The plan was to stretch him back out as a starter in the minors, but he immediately went on the injured list with an elbow injury.

Then, he returned mid-season for a handful of extended relief outings and made a few starts in September, but still struggled with walks.

His walk problem was two-fold. First, he had no semblance of a plan for left-handed batters. Coming from a low, side-arm slot, Roupp is an extreme east-west pitcher. That means his pitches almost entirely move on a horizontal plane. Righties were totally lost, but lefties had an easy time.

Even his curveball, a pitch that traditionally moves more downward, has significantly more horizontal movement than downward compared to other curveballs.

So, he’d fall into patterns where he’d use that pitch to try and pick off called strikes, like sweeper-focused righties do to lefty batters. His command wasn’t good enough though. He’d wind up nibbling, fall behind, and allow walks. In total last season, he walked more left-handed batters than he struck out.

He has not had the same problems this season. He’s tightened up the vertical movement on that curveball a bit and has committed to burying it below the zone as a whiff pitch. So far, it’s forcing a 44.4% whiff rate against lefties. Last year, its whiff rate against them was just 19.5%.

Past that, his changeup is generating more arm-side run, more drop, and he’s been more confident throwing it as a put-away pitch.

Also, he developed a new cutter in lieu of a poor four-seam fastball and tight slider that he’s scrapped.

That cutter has been a valuable tool for him because it has a very different movement profile than the rest of his pitches and that surprises hitters. He’s throwing it 14% of the time against lefties – mostly when he’s behind in the count – and it’s bailed him out with a ton of weak contact.

He’s still lights out against righties too and few pitchers in the league are missing more bats or forcing more swings at pitches outside the strike zone than him. This is likely your final chance to add him before his ascension continues.

Kumar Rocker, SP Rangers

(22% Rostered on Yahoo)

At this point in the season, ERA can be our greatest aid in finding worthwhile pitchers on the waiver wire. Mainly, when a pitcher has an ugly ERA, but has made some material changes start to start that could change their fortunes.

That is the case for Rocker who allowed 10 earned runs over his first three starts that spanned just 11 1/3 total innings while only striking out six batters and walking four.

These rough starts were not against marquee offenses either, as the Reds and Mariners crushed him.

For some reason, Rocker threw progressively fewer sliders over those three poor starts. That slider is hands down his best pitch and the one keeps his potential sky-high. Yet, its usage bottomed out with just four total thrown in that rough start against the Mariners.

He was clearly struggling to command it and favored his curveball and more sinkers over it to no avail.

Well, something clicked with that slider in between his last two starts because he threw 45 of them last week against the Angels. That was nearly three times more than he threw any other pitch and it was highly effective forcing 12 whiffs, nine more called strikes, lots of soft contact, and plenty of ugly swings out of the zone.

He will be a highly effective starting pitcher if he can consistently rely on that pitch and his high ERA makes it a great time to sneakily buy back in on him.

Agustín Ramírez, C Marlins

(8% Rostered on Yahoo)

Ramírez was promoted somewhat surprisingly earlier this week and looks ready to hit the ground running.

First off, it’s expected that he plays nearly every day. The Marlins’ other options at catcher are Nick Fortes, Rob Brantly, and Liam Hicks. While they’ve held their own this season, none have anywhere near the pedigree nor physical tools than Ramírez does.

A consensus top-100 prospect and peaking at #55 on Baseball Prospectus’ pre-season top-101 list, Ramírez was the centerpiece of the Marlins’ return for Jazz Chisholm Jr. last summer.

He accumulated 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in his 176 total games across double-A and triple-A over the last three seasons. That power, speed combo is unheard of for a catcher and Ramírez looks like he could sustain it to a degree in the big leagues.

During his debut on Monday, he legged out an infield single, smoked a double 110.4 mph, and then stole third base. That is a well-rounded ball game if I’ve ever seen one.

Also, Ramírez showed off his gaudy raw power this spring training when he laced a single 115.1 mph.

He already has some of the best raw power and speed for any catcher in the league. There are some concerns with his defensive ability, but the Marlins likely didn’t call him up to sit on the bench.

He has a great chance to be a top-10 type of catcher right away.

Expert picks & predictions for tonight’s game between the Phillies and the Mets

Rotoworld Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports)

"Yesterday, we were on the Mets and that came through in sweaty fashion at the end, but let's zig-zag today. While +110 is tempting for the Mets as a home underdog, I mean, they are 10-1 at Citi Field this year, it's telling they are underdogs.

With four-straight wins over St. Louis and opening as a favorite in the series against Philly at home was a good spot to bet them, but here it feels like a fade spot. The Phillies have won all four of Sanchez's starts and while both starting pitchers are coming off season-highs in Ks (Sanchez 12, Canning 8), they've both been prone to the home run ball. If that becomes a theme, I'd side with the Phillies here."

Brewers call up Craig Yoho and he makes his major league debut

SAN FRANCISCO — When Craig Yoho left spring training having missed making Milwaukee’s roster to start the year, manager Pat Murphy assured the right-hander he would be in the major leagues soon enough.

The 25-year-old Yoho had never even pitched at Triple-A, so that remained an important step in his path to the majors — and over the weekend he found out he would be joining the Brewers.

He made his big league debut when he took the ball to start the eighth inning with his team trailing 4-2. After striking out Heliot Ramos, Yoho walked LaMonte Wade Jr. and gave up a single to Wilmer Flores before a mound visit.

Patrick Bailey hit a sacrifice fly as Milwaukee turned an inning-ending double play. The Giants won 5-2.

“I got off to a hot start this year in Triple-A and felt like I put myself into the conversation, and I’m here and now I’m ready to help this team,” Yoho said, sitting in the visiting dugout at Oracle Park before the game. “Ready to go whenever my name’s called.”

He arrived in time for the opener of a four-game series with the Giants, and had plenty of supporters ready to cheer his major league debut. Yoho’s wife, Sydni, and 8-month-old daughter Daisy made the trip with him from Charlotte, North Carolina, while his parents, Lance and Connie, and brother Brandon and his wife, Madison, traveled from the Indianapolis area. In addition, his in-laws came from near San Antonio.

Yoho allowed just one unearned run over 9 2/3 innings at Triple-A Nashville this year after posting an 0.94 ERA over 48 relief appearances with various minor league teams last season.

He will take all he gained during spring training into this next step, one he is counting on being a prolonged stay with Milwaukee.

“There was just a lot of confidence coming away from that. I got to get some exposure with the coaching staff and teammates and know that my stuff plays at this level,” he said. “And I just need to trust myself and go out there and just pitch.”

Murphy’s message was simple: “Don’t be satisfied you’re just here. You earned it, you deserve it.”

For Yoho, this has been a long time coming. An eighth-round pick by Milwaukee in the 2023 amateur draft, he transferred from the University of Houston after the pandemic-interrupted 2020 season and almost immediately was injured — missing two seasons when he needed Tommy John elbow reconstruction. He also dealt with a knee injury.

The Brewers are hoping he can boost a bullpen that has struggled this season. Milwaukee’s 5.14 bullpen ERA ranks 26th in the majors. Last year, the Brewers had a 3.11 bullpen ERA that was second in the majors.

Murphy looked forward to the moment he would call Yoho’s name to make his long-awaited debut.

“It’s the greatest part of the job is to see players and I guess their families, too, although I don’t get to see that all the time, but the greatest part of the job is to see the guys start believing they can and to see them realize they’ve made it,” Murphy said. “But that’s not what they’re here for, just to make it. They want to excel. But that’s a priceless part of the job, I promise you. I feel very very grateful that I can be part of something like that because it is so very special.”

Milwaukee cleared roster space for Yoho by optioning right-hander Logan Henderson to Nashville and transferring lefty Nestor Cortes to the 60-day injured list.

Henderson was sent down one day after striking out nine batters and allowing only one run over six innings in his MLB debut.

Cubs acquire Drew Pomeranz in a trade with the Mariners

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs acquired Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners, putting another relief option in their minor league system.

Chicago traded cash to Seattle for the 36-year-old Pomeranz, who hasn’t appeared in a big league game since 2021. The team said the veteran left-hander would report to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs are on top of the NL Central with a 14-10 record, but their bullpen is off to a shaky start. They have a 5.19 bullpen ERA going into a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pomeranz signed a minor league contract with Seattle on March 27. He went 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA and two saves in nine appearances with Triple-A Tacoma.

Pomeranz has a connection to Cubs manager Craig Counsell. He had a 2.39 ERA in 25 appearances with Milwaukee in 2019 while Counsell was in the dugout with the Brewers.

Pomeranz was drafted by Cleveland with the No. 5 pick in the 2010 amateur draft out of the University of Mississippi. He broke into the majors with Colorado in 2011.

He is 48-58 with a 3.91 ERA in 289 games (140 starts) over 11 years in the majors, also playing for the Athletics, San Diego, Boston and San Francisco.

Padres put Luis Arraez on 7-day concussion injured list following scary collision

DETROIT — Luis Arraez was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list by the San Diego Padres.

The three-time batting champion got hurt in Houston when he collided with Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubón on a frightening play at first base.

Arraez was put on a backboard and carted out of the stadium. He was taken to a hospital but returned to the ballpark following San Diego’s 3-2 victory.

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Arraez was sore, as expected, but tests showed no structural damage.

“It’s overall very favorable relative to how scary that looked,” Shildt said. “Was able to celebrate at the very end, came in afterward with his teammates. Alert, so that was good for everybody’s spirits — mostly Luis of course.

“Woke up, slept well. As you would expect had some stiffness in his neck, but nothing cognitively is anything that we’re overly concerned about. He is going to go, rightfully so, in concussion protocol. More testing will be done. Hopefully it’s more out of caution than necessity.”

Arraez was headed back to San Diego. To replace him on the active roster, the Padres recalled infielder Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso before their series opener against the Detroit Tigers.

Shildt said Arraez did have a small cut on his jaw. He will undergo more testing, and it’s too soon to tell when he will be able to resume baseball activities.

“But at the moment, it’s kind of the best-case scenario for Luis,” Shildt said. “We’ll get through the testing, make sure cognitively he’s OK still, has range of motion, and then we’ll go from there. ... It’s as good as we could possibly expect.”

Arraez dragged a bunt in the first inning toward first baseman Christian Walker, who flipped the ball to Dubón covering the bag. That’s where he collided with Arraez, who appeared to hit Dubón’s arm or elbow with his face.

Both players fell to the ground, but Arraez took the worst of it, laying motionless in foul territory next to first base as athletic trainers and coaches from both teams came out to tend to him.

“It was scary,” Dubón said. “I mean, just watching him not move. It was scary. Especially people know the type of player I am. I’m not a dirty player or anything. So it sucks. Worst part about it is you get death threats from stuff like this and everything. So it’s going to be a fun ride home.”

Dubón and Walker as well as Padres stars Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado stood and watched as Arraez was placed on a backboard and carted out of the stadium. As he was being placed on the cart, Arraez put his arm around Shildt.

“It was a sad moment, especially getting close to him and seeing him on the ground like that, you definitely get scared,” Tatis said. “You almost go into tears, but holding up. You sit down right next to him and start praying for him right away. Happy he is back with us already. Just happy he’s standing up. It’s a sad part of the game, but stuff happens sometimes. Just happy he’s alright.”

Play resumed after a 10-minute delay.

Arraez is hitting .287 with three home runs, seven RBIs and a .755 OPS. The three-time All-Star infielder has won three consecutive batting titles, one in the American League and two in the National League.

Flores joins elite Giants company as hot start continues

Flores joins elite Giants company as hot start continues originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Wilmer Flores continued his hot start to the 2025 MLB season Monday night, and he joined some elite Giants company along the way.

With his seventh homer of the season in San Francisco’s 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Oracle Park, Flores joined an elite list of company as the only Giants players to record at least seven home runs and at least 24 RBI within the first 23 games (h/t Sarah Langs).

Flores joins Moises Alou (2006), Matt Williams (1995), Barry Bonds (1993), Willie Mays (1964), Willie McCovey (1960), Bill Terry (1932) and George Kelly (1921). Talk about good company.

Flores’ seventh home run, which is fifth-best in MLB, came at a clutch time for the Giants on Monday, as his solo bomb gave San Francisco a 3-2 lead that ultimately helped the Giants secure a big win and improve to 15-8 on the season.

Flores finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk. He now is batting .220 with a .749 OPS so far in 2025.

Through 71 games last season, Flores hit just four home runs.

He’s now not only nearly doubled that number just 23 games into the season, but he’s making Giants history as his hot start continues.

Dodgers merch collaboration with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is a natural fit

A month ago Dodgers gear festooned with colorful flowers in the unmistakable designs of acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami sold out in minutes at a pop-up on Fairfax Ave. A couple hundred Angelenos lined up overnight to purchase gear, generating $40 million.

The pop-up, called the MLB Tokyo Series collection, preceded the two-game, season-opening series in Japan between the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs, and items soon hit the secondary market for four times the purchase price.

The merchandise was so popular that Murakami and the Dodgers responded by approximating the famous words of Hall of Fame Cubs shortstop Ernie Banks: "Let's play two!"

A new collection will be available April 28 during Japanese Heritage Night at Dodger Stadium and the Dodger Clubhouse store, then can be purchased only online. Murakami, 63, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch as he did before an exhibition between the Dodgers and Yomiuri Giants at the Tokyo Dome on March 15.

"It’s been two months since I started practicing for the first pitch in Tokyo, but given my age, it's not so easy to pick up new skills," Murakami said playfully in an interview with The Times. "Still, compared to the first day when I couldn't throw the ball at all, I've improved significantly.

"My hope this time is to throw the ball without it bouncing."

Murakami is unquestionably adept with a brush, a pen or a computer, creating iconic art that features manga, anime, cartoons and brightly colored anthropomorphic cherry blossoms, mushrooms and assorted flowers. He began delivering commissioned projects for luxury brands and celebrities 20 years ago, and a financial pinnacle came in 2008 when his provocative life-size figure "My Lonesome Cowboy" sold for $15.1 million at auction.

Since then Murakami has integrated his art on Louis Vuitton handbags, a Kanye West album cover, and the Kid Cudi collaboration Kids See Ghosts. He also had a solo exhibition in 2022 at The Broad titled Takashi Murakami: Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow that included sculpture, painting, wallpaper and immersive installations.

Now his attention has turned to baseball. The MLB Tokyo Series collection had his familiar colorful flora sprinkled across jerseys, bats, balls, hoodies, flip-flops and a Shohei Ohtani bobblehead. The surprise medium might have been collaborating with Topps on baseball cards.

"Since 2023, I have been creating trading cards and trading card games with my team, so I felt I approached this project with a good understanding of the context," Murakami said. "But when we filmed the unboxing event for the Topps Complex Series and Tokyo Series on YouTube, I recognized anew how profound the world of American sports trading cards is, which shook me with excitement."

The overall success of the Tokyo Series collection delighted Murakami, who said he remembers playing catch with his father as a child.

"Honestly, I had thought baseball wasn't as major a sport in Japan these days, so I was surprised by the overwhelming response," he said. "I received messages from childhood friends and was approached by neighbors afterwards, which made me realize that baseball remains the beloved sport among the Japanese public."

The addition of Japanese megastars Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki made collaborating with the Dodgers a natural. The team's popularity in Japan has never been greater.

"The Dodgers are the team Hideo Nomo joined when he first played Major League Baseball, overcoming various obstacles," Murakami said. "His success had a significant impact on Japanese players entering the majors, and his achievements are vivid in my memory.

"Shohei Ohtani joining the Dodgers feels like a fateful story for Japanese baseball, and I'm deeply moved by it. In that sense, I consider myself a Dodgers fan."

Murakami added that he has felt comfortable in L.A. since his exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007-2008.

"I believe my career as an artist in the contemporary art world took off in Los Angeles," he said. "The [MOCA] exhibition, curated by Paul Schimmel, was pivotal in establishing my career in America. Whenever I visit Los Angeles, I feel a strong connection, as if it's my second hometown, with fans saying hello to me around the city. So I'm especially grateful for this new relationship with the Dodgers in Los Angeles."
