Cincinnati Reds pay tribute to Pete Rose a day after he was posthumously reinstated by MLB

CINCINNATI — Pete Rose was celebrated by the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night, a day after baseball’s career hits leader was posthumously removed from Major League Baseball’s permanent ineligibility list.

There were chants of “Pete! Pete!” at Great American Ball Park. There was a pregame moment of silence, and a choir from Rose’s Cincinnati high school performed the national anthem. And No. 14 was everywhere, from the replica jerseys in the stands to the highlights shown on the videoboard.

It was the type of all-out effort that Rose himself would have appreciated.

“This city was my dad,” Rose’s daughter, Fawn, said.

Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin and Eric Davis — who played for Rose when he managed the Reds — shared stories about their former manager during a pregame panel, joined by former Rose teammate George Foster. Members of Rose’s family delivered the game ball before Cincinnati’s 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

“He played baseball with as much passion and competitive enjoyment as you ever could,” said Reds manager Terry Francona, who played with Rose with Montreal and played for him with Cincinnati. “You wanted to be on his team.”

Rose, who died in September at age 83, played for the Reds in 19 of his 24 seasons, winning two of his three World Series championships with his hometown team. His career was tarnished by a gambling scandal that led to a permanent ban on Aug. 23, 1989.

An investigation commissioned by Major League Baseball concluded Rose — a 17-time All-Star who finished with 4,256 hits — repeatedly bet on the Reds as a player and manager of the team from 1985-87, a violation of a long-standing MLB rule.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Tuesday he was changing the league’s policy on permanent ineligibility, saying bans would expire at death. Manfred met with Fawn Rose and Jeffrey Lenkov, a lawyer who represented Pete Rose, on Dec. 17.

Manfred “was gracious, kind,” Fawn Rose said. “Really gave me a forum to talk about my dad, not the baseball player, but the father, the grandfather and really what he means to the (fans) of Cincinnati.”

Pete Rose Jr., who appeared in 11 games with Cincinnati in 1997, said he was angry when he first heard about Manfred’s decision because he couldn’t call his father. But he called the change a step in the right direction.

“Hate to say this, but it’s not going to bring him back,” he said. “If they would have said you’re not going to be taken off the list, but you’re coming back, hey bring him back. But nothing but positives today.”

While Rose’s gambling ban made him a baseball pariah, that was never the case in a city that proudly embraces its status as the home of the oldest major league team. He was almost uniformly beloved in his hometown for his relentless playing style and his connection to the Big Red Machine — the dominant Reds teams in the mid-1970s.

“My dad used to tell me all the stories of how hard he played every time,” said Reds reliever Brent Suter, a Cincinnati native. “You know, never took a play off, always was running hard 90 (feet), sliding headfirst, you know, getting dirty every game. ... This was a guy who just embodied toughness, grit.”

There were long lines at several gates as the crowd of 43,585 filed into the ballpark. A steady stream of fans stopped in front of Rose’s statue for pictures before going inside the stadium.

There was a black tarp with the No. 14 over the pitcher’s mound as the players took batting practice.

“I remember his hustle. The headfirst slides. He was a person with not a lot of talent, but he worked so hard,” said Bob Wunder, 65, of Dayton.

Wunder expressed his frustration with the timing of Manfred’s decision.

“It’s awful. They should have done it when he was alive,” he said. “If I was the (Rose) family, I would say ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’ I’m upset that it had to wait until he passed away.”

The change in Rose’s status makes him eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame — long a sore spot for Rose’s most ardent supporters — but his Cooperstown induction is far from a given.

Rose’s case would be considered by the Hall’s Classic Baseball Era committee, which next meets to consider players in December 2027. A 10-person panel selects eight ballot candidates with the approval of the Hall’s board, and the group is considered by 16 members at the winter meetings, with a 75% or higher vote needed.

“I know I oversimplify things. But what Pete did as a player, if he’s not in, there is no Hall of Fame,” Francona said. “But I get it. There are some things that ... I’m glad I don’t have to make (those) decisions.”

Jerry Casebolt, 80, of Florence, Kentucky, stopped to get his photo taken in front of the Rose statue before the game. He said he was at the 1970 All-Star Game when Rose bowled over Ray Fosse in a memorable play at the plate, and he also attended the game when Rose broke Ty Cobb’s hits record.

The removal of Rose from the ineligible list was meaningful for him.

“It was great to hear the news,” he said. “Just opening up the gates (to the Hall of Fame), but it’s still questionable. Hope he gets in. Shame he didn’t get to see it.”

What we learned as Jordan Hicks struggles early again in Giants' loss to D-backs

What we learned as Jordan Hicks struggles early again in Giants' loss to D-backs originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants have been a bottom-third offense in a lot of ways, but they might be at the top of the list when it comes to teams you don’t want to let hang around.

The Arizona Diamondbacks did that for three hours Wednesday afternoon, wasting several opportunities to turn this into the type of game that ends with a position player on the mound for the losing side. With a chance to make them pay in the bottom of the ninth, the Giants came up short.

The Diamondbacks had a six-run lead early, but the Giants entered the ninth down by a pair and got a Matt Chapman single, Willy Adames double and a Patrick Bailey walk with one out. After Mike Yastrzemski struck out, LaMonte Wade Jr. drew a pinch-hit walk to make it a one-run game and set the stage for Christian Koss, who hit a grand slam on Tuesday.

This time, Koss popped out, ending the comeback bid and giving the Diamondbacks an 8-7 win and a series victory. The Giants have now dropped both series to fellow NL West contenders, having been swept in San Diego earlier this month. This latest loss nearly went off the rails early.

Jordan Hicks nearly got knocked out in the second and didn’t record an out in the third. When Hayden Birdsong took over and allowed a couple of homers, the Diamondbacks took an 8-2 lead. But they kept wasting opportunities to put the nail in the coffin, leaving two on in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

As the bottom of the seventh started, the Giants trailed 8-4 but the Diamondbacks had left nine on base, and Jung Hoo Lee charged through the door. Lee homered into the arcade for the second straight day, cutting the deficit to two with his sixth blast of the year.

The Giants had a chance to tie it in the eighth after a bizarre sequence at second base. Heliot Ramos hit a grounder to third and the throw pulled Pavin Smith off the bag, but Smith threw down to second, where Koss was rolling in the dirt and tagged out.

Koss had run into Diamondbacks second baseman Jordan Lawler, who is normally a shortstop but entered for the apparently injured Ketel Marte. After a long meeting, the umpires ruled that Lawler had interfered with Koss, who was put back on second as the inning continued.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was ejected for arguing and then “ejected” all four umpires as he left the field. When play resumed, Wilmer Flores popped up to end the inning.

Here are the takeaways from the Giants’ loss that drops them to 25-19:

Decision Time?

The first time through the order, Hicks gave up a homer, double, three singles and a walk of the No. 9 hitter who was trying to put down a sacrifice bunt. That got the bullpen going, but Hicks escaped complete disaster in the second inning when Corbin Carroll lined into an unassisted double play and Ketel Marte struck out.

The third inning began with a double, and that again got Birdsong up in the pen. When Josh Naylor blooped a single into left-center to put runners on the corners, Bob Melvin came out with the hook. Birdsong gave up a three-run homer to Eugenio Suarez before settling down and Hicks ended up with an ugly line: 2+ innings, 7 hits, 5 earned runs, 1 walk, 1 strikeout.

The start was the shortest of the year for Hicks, who struggled with his command and had trouble keeping the Diamondbacks off his fastball. He threw the pitch 28 times and averaged 97 mph, but got just one swing-and-miss.

Hicks has a 6.55 ERA through nine starts, although the advanced metrics paint a much different picture. He entered the start with a 3.17 FIP and 3.55 xERA, but he has had trouble finding consistent results. Since an eye-opening debut in Houston, Hicks has allowed 33 earned runs in 39 1/3 innings.

Out Of The Pen

Birdsong has been waiting all season for an opening to get back into the rotation, but his afternoon didn’t go well, either.

Suarez’s 13th homer got his afternoon off to a rough start and Ketel Marte hit a long two-run blast in the fourth. Birdsong ended up throwing 65 pitches over three innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks. Homers have been a slight issue of late, but he still has a 2.31 ERA through 11 relief appearances.

If the Giants do want to make a move at the back of their rotation, it won’t be hard to push Wednesday’s relief outing to the side. Birdsong warmed up and then sat back down in the second, and he entered with two on and no outs. That’s not an easy runway for someone who has been a starter his whole life.

Good Day For David

The depth chart at first base is about to get crowded. Casey Schmitt and Jerar Encarnacion are both rehabbing with Triple-A Sacramento, and when Encarnacion returns on May 26 (the first day he is eligible) he is expected to become the starting first baseman against left-handed pitchers.

For now, though, David Villar is making a case to get more starts, including this weekend when the Giants will face a couple of left-handed pitchers. Villar made two strong defensive plays, robbing Carroll of at least a two-run double in the second inning and then diving and making a strong throw to Spencer Bivens to keep Alek Thomas from a leadoff single in the seventh.

Villar also reached base three times, raising his OBP to .429 since he returned from Triple-A.

Expert picks & predictions for tonight’s game between the Pirates and the Mets

Rotoworld Best Bet

Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) leans toward the Buccos:

"One of the angles I like in baseball is backing a team to avoid a sweep. The Pirates avoided a sweep against the Braves after two consecutive series of being swept. At +220 odds, the Pirates aren't a bad look today in what could be another low-scoring affair."

Hernández: Roki Sasaki's shoulder issue leaves Dodgers in a familiar and problematic position

LOS ANGELS, CA - APRIL 12, 2024: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki (11) walks back to the mound as Chicago Cubs first base Michael Busch (29) run the bases after hitting a solo homer in the second inning at Dodgers Stadium on April 12, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times)
Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki walks back to the mound as the Chicago Cubs' Michael Busch runs the bases after hitting a solo homer during a game last month at Dodger Stadium. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times)

Like pretty much every other time the Dodgers have found themselves in a self-made mess, the task of downplaying a major problem once again was made the responsibility of manager Dave Roberts.

So, in the aftermath of a deflating 11-1 defeat by the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night, Roberts trudged into the interview room at Dodger Stadium and applied a good old Stan Kasten spin to Roki Sasaki’s move to the 15-day injured list.

The point relayed by Roberts was basically this: Sasaki underwhelmed in his eight major league starts because of a shoulder pain that he kept secret from the Dodgers “for the last weeks,” and not because the 23-year-old rookie right-hander wasn’t as good as they previously thought.

“He hasn’t been as productive as he would have liked because he was compromised,” said Roberts, who added that Sasaki revealed his condition to the team after his most recent start.

Read more:Dodgers are routed by Athletics but will get Clayton Kershaw back Saturday

The explanation raised an equally alarming possibility, however.

If Roberts’ story was accurate, and Sasaki experienced a shoulder impingement similar to the one that slowed him down last year in Japan, wouldn’t that point to a chronic problem?

As it was, Sasaki was already viewed as a high injury risk. He never remained healthy for an entire season with the Chiba Lotte Marines.

At this point, what’s worse? That Sasaki’s lack of control and decline in fastball velocity were because of a chronic shoulder issue? Or because he just was too raw to compete in the major leagues?

Either scenario would be problematic.

So, what now?

As much as the Dodgers sold Sasaki on how they could one day guide him to a Cy Young Award, his future isn’t their only priority. They also have to consider what’s best for their team, which is positioned to become baseball’s first repeat champion in a quarter century.

Even if the Dodgers acknowledge that Sasaki is more of a long-term project than a short-term solution and want to send him to the minor leagues when he returns, they might not have the luxury of doing so. They have signed four potential frontline pitchers in the last two years, and three of them are currently on the injured list — Sasaki, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. The other, two-way player Shohei Ohtani, isn’t expected to pitch until after the All-Star break.

Snell was examined by a team doctor on Tuesday but the team didn’t provide any details about his condition. Glasnow played catch but Roberts didn’t provide a timeline for his return.

The rotation is in such a state of ruin that not only were the Dodgers forced to start Landon Knack on Tuesday, they were desperately awaiting the return of 37-year-old Clayton Kershaw four days later.

Roberts described Sasaki’s injury as “benign” but didn’t say when he might resume throwing. The manager insisted there were no thoughts of sending him to the minors, despite Sasaki posting a 4.72 earned-run average and completing six innings in just one start.

“I think our goal is to get him healthy, get him strong, make sure his delivery is sound for him to pitch for us,” Roberts said.

In other words, Sasaki will return to the mound in the major leagues. He will have to gain familiarity with low-quality American baseballs in the major leagues. He will have to become more comfortable with the pitch clock in the major leagues. He will have to strengthen his body to prevent future injuries in the major leagues. He will have to learn to throw something other than a fastball, forkball and slider in the major leagues.

The Dodgers knew Sasaki would require an adjustment period, but they couldn’t have imagined anything this drastic.

The introductory news conference they staged for Sasaki in January was matched in scale in recent years only by Ohtani’s and Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s. That was where president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman declared Sasaki would start the season in the Dodgers’ rotation, and general manager Brandon Gomes compared him to Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Back then, the Dodgers’ plan for Sasaki was simple: Insert him into the rotation and watch him develop into one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Sasaki can still become everything the Dodgers envisioned, but his path to greatness has become infinitely more complicated. Roberts remained characteristically upbeat, saying Sasaki concealed his shoulder problems not because he was selfish but because he didn’t want to let down an injury-ravaged team.

“He’s a great teammate,” Roberts said.

With his rotation crumbling, Roberts didn’t have the luxury of viewing the situation any other way.

This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times.

Mets' surprisingly dominant starting rotation just made history

Before the season, the belief of most was that the Mets' starting pitching was their biggest question mark.

I wrote as much in SNY's Mets season preview and prediction.

But while the starting staff was a question mark, there was plenty of upside with every expected starter.

That upside has not just been met, but exceeded.

Even while operating without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, the Mets' rotation just made history.

With Tuesday's strong start by Kodai Senga, the Mets became the first team ever to have five pitchers with earned run averages 3.15 or lower and 40 or more strikeouts through the first eight starts of a season, via Greg Harvey of Stats Perform and OptaSTATS.

The numbers:

Kodai Senga: 1.22 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 44.1 innings over eight starts
Clay Holmes: 2.74 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 42.2 innings over eight starts
Tylor Megill: 3.10 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 40.2 innings over eight starts
Griffin Canning: 2.36 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 42.0 innings over eight starts
David Peterson: 3.05 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 44.1 innings over eight starts

The level the Mets' staff is performing at is eye-popping, but it really shouldn't be stunning given David Stearns' track record when it comes to identifying starting pitching -- and New York's foundation for pitching success.

Manaea and Montas are both nearing rehab assignments, so the expectation is that the Mets will turn to a six-man rotation in the near future.

Beyond that, possible top-of-the-rotation arms Brandon Sproat and Nolan McLean are with Triple-A Syracuse, meaning they're on the doorstep of the majors.

It will be interesting to see how the Mets deploy their rotation later this season if everyone remains healthy and productive. As we've seen time after time -- including right now with the injury-depleted Dodgers -- you can never have enough quality starting pitching.
