ATLANTA — Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes has been put on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, two days after leaving a start early against the Washington Nationals.
Arizona led 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Burnes allowed a single by CJ Abrams with two outs. The right-hander then gestured toward the dugout with his glove and yelled in frustration.
Burnes allowed a run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, with a walk and six strikeouts. He is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts this season.
Arizona signed Burnes to a six-year, $210 million contract before the season, and the 30-year-old has been very durable over the past several years. He’s made at least 28 starts in every season since he won the 2021 National League Cy Young Award for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The D-backs called up left-hander Tommy Henry to take Burnes’ spot on the roster. He’s pitched in one game this season, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

TORONTO — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper returned to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays after he missed the last five games with a bruised right elbow.
Harper played first base and batted third in his first game since he was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of a game last week.
The Phillies went 1-4 without Harper and fell out of first place in the NL East.
Harper’s elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2022 World Series, remains a sensitive area. In light of the injury, Harper plans to wear a protective guard on his right elbow upon his return.
Harper is hitting .267 with eight homers and 33 RBIs in 54 games this season. Alec Bohm had shifted from third base to first base to replace Harper. Edmundo Sosa had taken over at third.
Bohm was back at third base against the Blue Jays.
NEW YORK — The New York Mets are calling up prized infield prospect Ronny Mauricio from the minors, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the move.
Mauricio’s promotion comes after third baseman Mark Vientos appeared to get injured late in Monday night’s victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Rated for years among the top 100 prospects in baseball and a jewel in the organization, Mauricio made his major league debut in September 2023 and batted .248 with two home runs, nine RBIs and seven stolen bases in 26 games that year.
But months later, the switch-hitter tore a knee ligament playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic and missed the 2024 season while recovering from multiple operations.
Finally healthy again, the 24-year-old Mauricio has played at three minor league levels this season as he finished rehabbing and began gaining regular game reps. He was resinstated from the injured list May 17 and optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.
Mauricio has been on a tear at the plate recently, hitting .515 with three homers, eight RBIs, four steals and a 1.382 OPS in 39 plate appearances over nine games at Syracuse.
Vientos stumbled out of the batter’s box on a 10th-inning groundout Monday night and fell to the turf. When he got up, he grabbed for his right hamstring.
The severity of his injury was not yet clear.
A natural shortstop, Mauricio has played several other positions in the minors and majors. He started 21 big league games at second base in 2023, and five at third.
The first-place Mets were set to play the second game of a four-game series Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Baseball isn't boring and the CW isn't stupid, at least when it comes to the Savannah Bananas, the Georgia-based team that has rewritten the rules around the classic American pastime. The network has picked up rights to broadcast the July 27 Bananas game at Citizen's Bank Park in Philadelphia.
"Banana Ball" incorporates humor, gymnastics, lip syncs and snappy dance choreography in a minor league baseball game with rules that definitely don't match those of Major League Baseball — though many of the players once had MLB aspirations. This year the team has sold out 18 major league ballparks, plus three football stadiums with capacities of more than 70,000.
The CW in recent years has been leaning into live sports coverage, which has generally been delivering ratings results in a rapidly changing TV-viewing landscape. The network has the NASCAR Xfinity Series, WWE NXT on Tuesday nights, Grand Slam Track, AVP beach volleyball on summer Saturdays, ACC and Pac-12 football games in the fall and, starting next year, PBA professional bowling.
The Savannah Bananas come with a built-in audience earned via posts on TikTok, Facebook Reels and the like. The team has 10 million followers on TikTok alone.
“We’ve always been very clear about our goal,” Bananas owner Jesse Cole told The Times in 2022. “We exist to make baseball fun.”
“It’s all about energy. We want to give people energy, delivering it every second, from the moment we open the gates at two o’clock until the last fan leaves at 11," he added over the weekend, when the team played to a sellout crowd at Anaheim Stadium.
There's definitely an audience appetite for the Savannah team: There are tickets available for games in August and September, but only through a lottery — and the wait list for the lottery is more than 3 million names long. Last season's games drew a million fans total.
On Friday, the only way into the Anaheim game was through the resale market. Hours before the first pitch, the lowest price (fees and taxes included) for a pair of Bananas tickets on StubHub was $209.52, while it took a mere $171.72 to snag a pair of tickets to the Yankees-Dodgers series opener at Dodger Stadium the same night.
Who needs Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge anyway: Banana Ball has the Savannah team facing rival outfits the Texas Tailgaters, the Firefighters, the Party Animals and the Visitors.
“The Savannah Bananas have taken the sports world by storm through their high-energy blend of baseball and entertainment that connects with viewers of all ages,” Mike Perman, senior vice president of CW Sports, said in a statement Tuesday.
“We are thrilled to partner with them for their broadcast television debut, and we cannot wait to bring our audience every unpredictable play in front of what promises to be an electric atmosphere in Philadelphia.”
“Banana Ball on The CW is a no-brainer,” Bananas owner Cole added in that news release. "After seeing their recent commitment to sports, we knew this could be a great partnership. With the speed and entertainment of Banana Ball, we look forward to creating new fans together in the years to come.”

Tears flowed from Freddie Freeman as he sat in a Dodger Stadium interview room Aug. 5 and described the arduous recovery his 3-year-old son Max was making from a rare neurological condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves.
Max had returned home from a five-night stay at Children's Hospital Orange County, and Freeman was back in the Dodgers lineup after missing eight games to be with his family during the ordeal.
Two months later, the Dodgers were playing host to the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series. A police officer approached Freeman's wife, Chelsea, to ask how Max was doing.
The officer, Samuel Riveros of the Baldwin Park Police Dept., smiled and handed her a police patch to give to Max.
Riveros was killed Saturday in Baldwin Park when a gunman fatally shot him in the head while Riveros was rushing to the aid of a fellow officer who also had been shot, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told The Times.
Chelsea Freeman related meeting Riveros on her Instagram Stories and offered her family's condolences.
"Our hearts are heavy hearing of his passing this week," she posted. "We met during the Dodgers/Mets playoffs. He came up to me, asked how my son Max was doing and handed me his police patch to give to him.
“A small gesture that meant so much.”
Freddie Freeman was a World Series hero for the Dodgers in 2024, hitting a walk-off grand slam to win Game 1 against the New York Yankees. He is off to a hot start in 2025, currently leading the NL with a .368 batting average.
Riveros had been a Baldwin Park officer since 2016, joined the agency’s SWAT team in 2019, and had recently become a field training officer, which in a statement the agency called a “testament to his leadership and mentorship.”
Riveros was known for his devotion to the Dodgers, even traveling to the stadiums of opposing teams to watch them play, according to Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert A. López.
“Officer Riveros gave his life in service to others, a profound testament to his unwavering dedication to duty and selfless courage,” the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept. wrote in a statement. “His loss is profoundly felt — not only by his family and colleagues, but by the entire Baldwin Park community and law enforcement family."
Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen, 22, was arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held in lieu of $4 million bail, according to the Sheriff’s Department. He lives with his mother at the Baldwin Park address on Filhurst Avenue, where gunfire erupted Saturday night, a source said.
“This tragic shooting is a sobering reminder of the danger our first responders face when they answer the call,” Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman said in a statement.
SAN FRANCISCO — Bryce Eldridge is one of the best power hitters in the minor leagues. He also might be the prospect who is best at packing his bags.
Eldridge has played 150 games over the last two seasons and been promoted four times, including twice to Triple-A. With the latest move, there’s only one more to make, and that will put him with the Giants in the big leagues.
When Eldridge first joined Triple-A Sacramento for the final games of the 2024 season, there was no chance to take that next step. But he returned Tuesday as someone who is still on the fast track, and who has very little ahead of him on the depth chart.
The Giants started Casey Schmitt at first base against a right-hander on Tuesday night. In Triple-A, they have tried Marco Luciano, who was a shortstop before moving to left field this season. Veteran Jake Lamb was just released from the Triple-A roster.
The big league Opening Day starter, LaMonte Wade Jr., has had such a rough two months that it wasn’t unthinkable that he would be released Monday when Jerar Encarnacion returned. Instead, Wade started against the Padres and took a pitch off the wrist, which will keep him out at a time when he desperately needs to make an impact.
All of this leads to one simple question: When will it be Eldridge Time?
“I still think for Bryce it’s best to get reps, but again, things change,” president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Tuesday. “We’ll continue to have conversations and watch his progress.”
During an interview with beat writers, Posey said multiple times that the situation is “fluid.” He didn’t give anything away, but he also sounded like someone who is perhaps ready to be more aggressive than he imagined being with his first basemen at this point.
“We most definitely want to put him in a position to succeed,” Posey said of Eldridge, “but yeah, ultimately the goal is to win games at the big league level.”
The Giants have the pitching staff to do that, but it’s been more than two weeks since they have scored more than four runs. Posey said the front office is looking at internal and external solutions, but there’s only so much that can be done in early June.
“You keep showing up, you keep showing up,” he said. “From my vantage point now, it’s looking at are there different options out there, what are our different options internally. We’re at a strange point of the season as far as other teams’ willingness to make trades with us being a couple months away [from the MLB trade deadline]. You keep showing up but from our perspective as a front office, we’re not satisfied with the production. We’re trying to exhaust all options.”
At what point will Eldridge be a realistic one?
That’s fluid, and also not totally up to his bat.
The knock on Eldridge has been his glove at first base, with team officials responding to questions about his ability there by constantly saying “it’s a work in progress.” Posey said he has seen improvement while watching Double-A games, but it’s something else that stands out. Eldridge, he said, has been a very willing learner and already has spent time learning from Will Clark and Joe Panik this season.
“He wants to be great at it,” Posey said. “He still has a lot of work to do and I think he knows that as well, but it’s nice that he’s moving in the right direction.”
Eldridge is the long-term first baseman at Oracle Park, but Giants officials have grown more open to the idea of bringing him up later this year even if he requires some DH time. The 20-year-old posted a .862 OPS and hit seven homers in 34 Double-A games. That league is tough for hitters, but Posey noted that Eldridge will see more advanced pitching now that he’s in Triple-A. It’s a hitter-friendly league, though, and at some point the numbers might force that next promotion, whether the glove is fully ready or not.
As he talked about the offense on Tuesday, Posey smiled and pointed out to reporters that he’s not someone who panics. He’s hopeful the offense picks it up soon and that the organization can stick to the plan with Eldridge, but if that changes in the coming months, the organization’s top prospect will be just a short drive away.

A memorable May just got even better for Jacob Wilson.
The Athletics’ sterling young shortstop earned AL Rookie of the Month honors Tuesday after putting up stellar numbers over the last few weeks.
In May, Wilson posted .368/.437/.538 splits at the plate, along with four home runs, six doubles and 16 RBI. He also walked 11 times compared to just eight strikeouts over 27 games.
Before Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay praised Wilson’s continuing development.
“The month was special,” Kotsay told reporters. “He’s been a big, big part of the offense and continues to just use his ‘magic wand,’ as we want to call it. The bat-to-ball skill is exceptional.
“He’s beating all expectations. I think the growth from a shortstop that we saw from last year to this year is noticeable. I think he’s making more plays than he did last season, and I think he’ll continue to get better.”
In addition to his play overall, the No. 6 overall pick from the 2023 MLB Draft created some unforgettable moments over the past month as well.
Wilson recorded the third walk-off hit of his young career on May 6 with an 11th-inning single to beat the Seattle Mariners. Needing only 62 career games, that made him the second-fastest player since at least 1969 to record three walk-off hits, per MLB’s Sarah Langs.
A week later, the Los Angeles native had a dominant homecoming to Dodger Stadium on May 13. In an 11-1 drubbing of the Dodgers, Wilson knocked out a pair of two-run home runs and finished with four hits.
Wilson, who entered 2024 as the top prospect in the Athletics’ organization, has vaulted himself into the frontrunner for the 2025 AL Rookie of the Year race. And though the Green and Gold have struggled lately, Wilson can continue to cement himself as a centerpiece of the team’s young core if his May numbers continue throughout the summer.

Jordan Hicks is heaed to the 15-day IL with inflammation on his right great toe, the team announced before Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres. RHP Sean Hjelle was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
Bob Melvin said Hicks began to feel the inflammation during his last outing in San Francisco’s 4-2 win over the Miami Marlins on June 1.
Hicks didn’t look right while walking three of the four batters he faced in Miami. Over 13 appearances (nine starts) in his second year with San Francisco, the righty has a disappointing 1-5 record, 6.47 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with 43 strikeouts and 20 walks in 48 2/3 innings.
“You could see him kind of get a little frustrated with the mound,” Melvin said Tuesday. ” … He had an MRI today and it showed some inflammation. Therefore, we’ll shut him down here for a little.”

After posting a 6.55 ERA through nine starts, Hicks was moved back to the bullpen where he spent most of his first five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays. Hayden Birdsong replaced Hicks in the rotation.
It’s been a tough road for Hicks this season, and this latest setback digs him into an even deeper hole.
With fan voting for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game getting underway on Wednesday, now is the perfect time to take stock of just how many candidates the Mets have for selection to the Midsummer Classic -- taking place in Atlanta on July 15.
The starting position players will be selected via the fan vote, while the position player reserves and all pitchers are chosen by the player ballot and commissioner's office.
So, how many legitimate candidates do the Mets have at this point?
That Lindor has zero All-Star Game selections as a Met (while finishing top 10 in MVP voting three times, including finishing second last season) is a travesty. But it will be a shock if he doesn't make it this year -- whether it's via the fan vote or otherwise.
Through 59 games, Lindor is slashing .285/.355/.502 with 14 home runs and a career-best 144 OPS+. He is on pace to finish the season with 38 homers, 105 runs scored, and 97 RBI while playing his usual elite defense at shortstop -- and being a team leader.
Lindor's main competition could come from Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, and Elly De La Cruz.
Alonso has cooled off a bit after his torrid start, but he's still having an absolutely monster campaign -- hitting .284/.384/.536 with 12 home runs, 46 RBI, and an NL-leading 18 doubles.
A four-time All-Star already, Alonso is a strong bet to make it among a field that includes Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, and Matt Olson.
Senga is leading the National League with a 1.60 ERA -- solidly ahead of Paul Skenes, who is second with a 2.15 mark. And right now, Senga is a lock to make it.

If Senga gets in, it will be his second selection after making it in 2023 during his rookie season.
Holmes has excelled while making the transition from reliever to starter.
His 3.07 ERA is the 13th-best in the NL, but he could easily vault into the top eight or so (Nick Pivetta is currently eighth, with a 2.74 ERA) with a strong start his next time out.
A lot of starting pitchers get picked, and there are also a late crop added due to selections who can't pitch in the All-Star Game after pitching the weekend prior.
Peterson has an even better case than Holmes at the moment, with his 2.69 ERA ranking seventh in the NL, behind only Corbin Burnes, Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Skenes, and Senga.
It can sometimes be difficult for non-closers to be chosen for the All-Star Game bullpen, but it does happen -- one example from last year is Matt Strahm.
If any non-closer deserves it at this point, it's hard to argue against Garrett.
He has been close to unhittable in 25.2 innings, posting a 0.70 ERA and 1.13 WHIP while striking out 30. Garrett has allowed just two earned runs all season.
Brazoban's case isn't as strong as Garrett's, but he deserves to be in the mix.
In what has been a huge bounce back year, Brazoban has a 1.30 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 34.2 innings across 26 appearances.

Conspicuous in his absence above is Juan Soto, who is starting to break out and is hitting the ball incredibly hard, but whose overall numbers remain well below his career levels.
Soto is hitting just .234/.364/.430 with a 128 OPS+ to go along with 10 home runs and 12 doubles.
But one hot stretch can thrust him right into the conversation for selection.
