The Mets faced the Orioles on Thursday in Baltimore in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Here are the takeaways...
- With the Mets nursing a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning, Ryne Stanek replaced David Peterson with a runner on first with no one out and surrendered a two-run homer to Gunnar Henderson -- who was pinch-hitting.
After allowing the go-ahead homer, Stanek walked three batters around a ground out before allowing a sacrifice fly to Ramon Laureano to extend the Orioles' lead to 3-1.
The Mets decided to go with Stanek despite Huascar Brazoban getting warm earlier in the game.
It was the second consecutive rough outing for Stanek, who allowed a run on two walks and one hit to the Yankees on Saturday.
- New York broke through in the fifth inning. After Brett Baty led off with a walk against O's starter Charlie Morton and stole second base, Tyrone Taylor lined an RBI double down the right field line to make it 1-0. Taylor's failure to advance to third base on a slow grounder hit right of first base for the first out of the inning was critical, though, since it cost the Mets a chance to score a run on Francisco Lindor's deep fly out to left field -- and they wound up plating just the one run in the fifth.
In the sixth inning, Mark Vientos led off the inning with a hustle double, but was stranded there.
- Peterson was dominant and economical over the first seven innings, holding Baltimore scoreless while throwing just 87 pitches.
Over those seven frames, Peterson allowed just four hits, walked none, and struck out six.
After Peterson gave up a ground ball single to Colton Cowser leading off the eighth inning, he was lifted for Stanek.
- The Mets squandered one early scoring chance and were robbed during their next opportunity.
After putting runners on second and third with no one out in the first inning, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso struck out and Jesse Winker popped out to end the threat.
Their next chance came in the third inning, when Alonso hit a sharp grounder with runners on first and second that seemed ticketed for the outfield. But Baltimore shortstop Luis Vazquez made a diving play ranging to his right before throwing him out at first base.
- Winker left the game after just one at-bat due to back tightness. The DH returned a few days ago after missing significant time because of an oblique injury.
