Blake Snell starts rehab assignment with Ontario on Wednesday

Dodgers starter Blake Snell will see his first game action of 2026 on Wednesday, officially starting a minor league rehab assignment with the Class-A Ontario Tower Buzzers in the second game of their road series against the San Jose Giants.

Snell has been on the injured list since the start of the season with shoulder fatigue. To date, he’s faced hitters twice at Dodger Stadium in simulated innings, on April 11 and April 15.

“I’m very excited about how I feel, where I’m at. Getting back to some normalcy again feels really good,” Snell said after the first of those simulated sessions in Los Angeles. “Throwing bullpens, not facing hitters, it’s tough to stay locked in.”

The Dodgers have mentioned multiple times this season that Snell’s timetable for return is some time in late May, which fits roughly with his opening his rehab assignment on Wednesday.,That leaves time for three or four rehab starts to build back up. If Snell takes the full 30 days on his rehab assignment, he’d still be ready to return by the final week of May.

Tower Buzzers play-by-play broadcaster Jeff Woolson noted Tuesday that Snell will attempt to pitch two or three innings on Wednesday, depending on pitch count.

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters in San Francisco on Tuesday that Snell would make at least three rehab starts, but most likely four.

“I would say the floor is get to five innings for sure. How we get there, we’re going to talk about it — as far as the three, four, or repeat the three [innings], I’m not sure about the progression,” Roberts said, as shown on SportsNet LA. “But the floor is getting to five innings, for sure.”

Ontario’s game in San Jose on Wednesday starts at 6 p.m. PT.

Also of note, reliever Brock Stewart on Tuesday shifted his rehab assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City after pitching twice last week for Class-A Ontario.

Lakers injury updates: How close are Austin Reaves, Luka Doncic to returning?

The Los Angeles Lakers host Game 2 of their first-round NBA Playoffs series against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday, April 21, and while the Lakers will be without two of their most important players in Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, one of them is inching closer towards a return.

It was revealed during a report on ESPN's NBA Today that Dončić and Reaves both began practicing with the Lakers on Monday, April 20. While Dončić is still considered out indefinitely, ESPN reports Reaves has been progressing, and there is optimism in the building that he could return towards the end of the series.

"The sense around the Lakers is that Austin Reaves is actually the one that's further along than Luka Dončić in their respective rehab processes," Shams Charania said on the broadcast. "... Remember early April here, he had a four-to-six-week timetable. So theoretically, that puts him on track late in this series, potentially early in the next series."

Charania added that Reaves has begun one-on-one on-court work and is expected to continue his progression to three-on-three and five-on-five before a return to game action.

Dončić, meanwhile, is currently not expected to return in the first round.

Neither has played since April 2 due to a grade 2 left hamstring strain (Dončić) and a grade 2 left oblique strain (Reaves). Dončić flew to Spain in the last week of the regular season to undergo an injection procedure in hopes of accelerating the healing process in his hamstring, while Reaves remained in Los Angeles to rehab his oblique.

New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox: Luis Gil vs. Connelly Early

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 16: Luis Gil #81 of the New York Yankees stands for the national anthem during the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium on April 16, 2026 in New York, New York. (Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The American League East has been a bit of a mess so far this year. The Yankees squandered a strong opening week, but the rest of the division has similarly alternated between dominance and disaster. Entering Tuesday night, everybody is within four games of .500. It’s a perfect time to sprinkle a little rivalry into this stew! The Bombers ship up to Boston following an offday for their first meeting of the year against the Red Sox.

While the Yankees did send the Red Sox packing in last year’s Wild Card Series, the fact is they had trouble handling their AL East rivals last year—Boston was no exception. They took the season series over New York 9-4, including a three-game sweep at Fenway Park in June. The Yankees cannot afford to overlook their struggling but still dangerous opponent in this series. Luis Gil will be tasked with getting the Bombers off to a good start in enemy territory.

Gil’s second start of the year came on Jackie Robinson Day and was not overly impressive. He survived five innings but allowed three home runs to the Angels—three of the ten overall hard-hit baseballs he surrendered in that outing. His fastball velocity is still down from his rookie year, and it’s getting clobbered; all three Angel homers came against it. For what it’s worth, the Red Sox have struggled against heaters to begin the year, with a .318 wOBA against them which ranks 26th in the league. By comparison, the Halos are fifth in the league with a .375. His changeup and slider are excellent pitches, but they’re only truly deadly if hitters have to fear a healthy four-seamer, too. We’ll see how Boston handles high velocity tonight.

The precocious Connelly Early was impressive to start Wild Card Game 3, but fellow rookie Cam Schlittler outshone the Virginian southpaw en route to a dominant win that sent Boston home. Early pitched great early (sorry, expect a similar joke in the recap if he does so again) but a rocky fourth inning featuring some bad defense sent him into a tailspin. Early impressed during the spring and earned a spot into the rotation to begin the season; he hasn’t blinked since. He boasts an advanced repertoire for a rookie, with six different pitches which he uses in a largely east-west attack on opponents. That said, Statcast puts him down for a 5.25 ERA, far above his actual ERA of 2.29. Could some regression be coming for Early tonight?

The Yankees offense which crushed Kansas City’s pitching over the weekend largely did so against other lefties. Noah Cameron and Cole Ragans both got hit hard. Hopefully the Monday rest day didn’t cool off their lumber. With that in mind, who better than Amed Rosario to bat leadoff ahead of Aaron Judge? Ben Rice has looked undaunted by lefty pitching—he’s in there over Paul Goldschmidt tonight. Giancarlo Stanton will DH, then Cody Bellinger will play center field with Randal Grichuk manning left. Jazz Chisholm Jr., José Caballero, and Austin Wells round out the starting nine, and Trent Grisham will be available off the bench.

Washington Nationals vs Atlanta Braves Game Thread

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 20: CJ Abrams #5 of the Washington Nationals steals second base in the sixth inning ahead of the throw to Jorge Mateo #2 of the Atlanta Braves at Nationals Park on April 20, 2026 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The Braves stormed into DC and knocked off the Nats in game one of the series. Now, the Nats will look to even things up in their four game set with the division leaders. To do so, they need to tighten up defensively. The errors have been piling up for the Nats lately.

This is a bit of an unusual lineup from Blake Butera. The thing that immediately stands out is Jacob Young in the 3 hole. Butera said he wanted to avoid stacking too many left handed hitters. Brady House will be out of the lineup. In his place, Jorbit Vivas will play third. Usually the Nats rotate catchers, but Drew Millas will get his second straight start. Foster Griffin has been the Nats best starter this year, but today will be a challenge for the lefty.

The Braves are making a couple alterations themselves. Drake Baldwin will be in the DH spot, meaning Jonah Heim will catch. Mauricio Dubon will be at shortstop in place of Jorge Mateo. Despite leaving the game yesterday, Ronald Acuna Jr. will be back in his customary lead off spot. Reynaldo Lopez started his career in DC, so tonight will be a bit of a homecoming for the 32 year old right hander.

The Braves took over in the middle innings last night to take game one. Now, it is time for the Nats to strike back. With Griffin on the mound, there should be some confidence, but the Braves are on a roll. Follow along down below and let’s go Nats!

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals Game Thread: April 15

Can the Braves win seven in a row? Can Reynaldo Lopez have another good outing? Is Jake Irvin actually just Jose Urena in some kind of weird Face/Off thing? Stay tuned and find out. Maybe.

How CJ McCollum is dominating Knicks and what they can do to slow him down

The Knicks find themselves in a 1-1 lock with the Hawks in their first-round matchup, as they head to Atlanta following an embarrassing defeat at home. While they’ve given themselves no shortage of issues to address before Game 3, one factor likely to be high up on New York’s list: stopping CJ McCollum.

The 6-foot-3, 34-year-old veteran guard has smoked the Knicks in back-to-back games at MSG this series. He scored 26 in Game 1 on 11-for-20 shooting, 4-for-9 from three, then added 32 points on 12-of-22 shooting, including 3-of-10 from three.

No other Hawk has managed to hurt the Knicks to McCollum’s degree and consistency thus far, making him the current biggest threat to end this New York playoff run early.

With that in mind, let’s break down how he’s cut through their defenses and what can be done to switch things up.

McCollum’s primarily been guarded by Jalen Brunson, who, for all he’s done on the offensive end, is the Knicks’ biggest weak point defensively. Normally, New York would hide him on a favorable matchup, but with Karl-Anthony Towns on the non-shooter (Dyson Daniels) in Atlanta’s lineup, head coach Mike Brown doesn’t have much of a choice.

To be fair, McCollum got a lot of his Game 1 buckets off silly Knicks mistakes and semi-transition stuff that’s easy to clean up. He’s also burned every other Knick that ends up guarding him via switch or changed matchup in those few attempts.

But he’s also identified Brunson as an easy target and is taking advantage. He’s 9-for-12 from the field when guarded by Brunson, and went from singling him out in Atlanta’s offense a little in Game 1 to all the time in Game 2.

From the middle of the second quarter of Game 2 on, if McCollum was on the floor with Brunson, that was the matchup he was playing to. Repeated isolations and pick-and-rolls, punishing every way Brunson and the roll man tried to play him.

His double-cross got Brunson way out of position multiple times. If he rejected a screen, Brunson slammed into it; if he used it, Brunson couldn’t recover in time.

Sometimes, even the slightest move gave McCollum a walking lane to the paint. Brown tried switching Brunson with Mikal Bridges, who was guarding Nikeil Alexander-Walker, down the stretch, to no avail.

McCollum would call for an Alexander-Walker screen, which Brunson would switch, giving Atlanta the matchup they wanted. McCollum would dance and usually score.

It should go without saying, but the first adjustment is for Brunson to show much better defensive effort. This is a uniquely tough matchup for him, an explosive guard that’s much quicker, but isn’t giving up size or strength.

That doesn’t matter. Brunson isn’t expected to be a lockdown defender, but he has to be better than he’s been and has proven it before.

His bouts with Andrew Nembhard and Tyrese Maxey looked similar at points, but they weren’t routinely walking right by him. He can make up much of this gap by fighting harder through screens, actually trying to stay attached to McCollum’s hip, and not giving in to switches so easily.

Brown will do his part and try different matchups, as well as throwing more aggressive schemes at McCollum if he’s rolling again. If Brunson is on NAW and McCollum is calling over screen after screen to pick on him, Brown needs to have his guards trap or another alternative to mix things up.

There’s also doing nothing.

For as tough as McCollum has been, if the rest of his team remains subdued, this defensive approach may end up fine.

Remember, the Knicks had a double-digit advantage and played a great defensive fourth quarter, but couldn’t convert on the offensive end. If they had, maybe they win, and this McCollum conversation isn't something to worry about, especially given the Hawks scored only 107 points. And it's not much of an offense when it rests on a 34-year-old zero-time All-Star.

However the Knicks choose to react, they’ll be doing so under immense pressure on the road. Win one in Atlanta and the series is in your hands again, don’t and it’ll be much more than Brunson taking the heat.

Since my last game thread, a 6-0 win against the Red Sox, the Twins have proceeded to lose 4 in a row. Its funny how quickly the vibes of a baseball season can change. They will try to get back on track against a tough customer, the Mets starter Nolan McLean. In his young career, McLean has made 12 starts, and only one of them could be classified as bad, and even in that bad start he struck out 11 over 5 innings. He is quickly looking like one of baseball’s best starting pitchers.

The Twins will counter with Simeon Woods Richardson, who has struggled in his last two starts, allowing 5 and 6 earned runs in them, respectively.

The good news for the Twins is that the Mets are in the middle of an 11 game losing streak. So, somebody’s losing streak ends tonight, let’s hope it’s ours.

Giants place Daniel Susac on IL, call up Eric Haase

The San Francisco Giants made a roster move on Tuesday afternoon, a few hours before starting a series against their rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. And unfortunately, it’s a move that sees one of the best stories of the young season come to a halt … for a while, at least.

San Francisco announced that backup catcher Daniel Susac had been placed on the 10-Day Injured List, retroactive to April 20, with right elbow ulnar neuritis. Taking Susac’s place on the active roster is veteran Eric Haase, whose contract has been purchased from AAA Sacramento. Haase was not on the 40-man roster, so the Giants cleared a space by moving injured reliever José Buttó to the 60-Day IL, as his season is presumably over.

It’s a bummer of a setback for Susac, who was enjoying a stellar rookie season after being a Rule 5 selection from the A’s back in December. Susac started his career with back-to-back three-hit days, and on the year is 11-23 with two doubles, one triple, one walk, and just three strikeouts, with five runs batted in and some decent defense behind the dish. That, combined with Patrick Bailey’s miserable start to the year in the batter’s box — the two-time Gold Glove winner is slashing just .151/.211/.151 — had resulted in the catcher situation inching a little closer to an even split rather than a pure starter/backup situation. But that will be on hold for a while, and hopefully Susac’s injury doesn’t take long to heal.

As for Haase, he was brought in over the offseason on a Minor League contract, and given a chance to compete with Susac for the backup role in Spring Training. He had a pretty decent spring, hitting well (8-28 with two home runs, one double, and four walks), but striking out 14 times. He was granted his release at the start of the season when he didn’t make the roster, but after not receiving any offers around the league, re-signed with the Giants on a Minor League contract, and has been playing in AAA ever since. In nine games with the River Cats, Haase is hitting 9-36 with two home runs, two doubles, two walks, and 13 strikeouts. He has also helped the roster by playing a little bit of left field after the Giants found themselves shy on bodies following the promotions of Drew Gilbert and Will Brennan to the Majors.

It’s interesting that the Giants opted to bring up Haase, rather than Jesús Rodríguez, an exciting prospect who was already on the 40-man roster, and who is having a blistering season so far in AAA (.344/.408/.492, with just six strikeouts in 71 plate appearances). Perhaps they’re waiting to bring up Rodríguez for when they have a larger role for him, rather than icing him on the bench where he’ll only play once or twice a week. Or maybe they just prefer the defense, leadership, and dependability of the veteran Haase, a 33-year old who has been in the squat for nearly 300 Major League games.

The Giants are nearly a month into the season now, and still all of their transactions have been due to injuries.

Freddie Freeman activated from paternity list, Dodgers option Ryan Ward

Freddie Freeman was activated off the paternity list ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, after the Dodgers first baseman missed two games for the birth of his daughter.

Freeman and wife Chelsea welcomed their fourth child on Sunday, London Rosemary Joy Freeman, they announced on Instagram.

In the series opener against the Giants, Freeman is back at first base and batting third.

Ryan Ward was optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma City after playing in both games in his first stint in the major leagues. The 28-year-old started at first base on Sunday at Coors Field, and had two hits, including a run batted in, in his major league debut against the Colorado Rockies. Ward also struck out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of Monday night’s blowout win in Denver.

Ward in his two games with the Dodgers had two hits in six at-bats.

The Dodgers got very good production out of first base in Freeman’s brief absence. In addition to Ward’s two hits and RBI on Sunday, Dalton Rushing started at first on Monday and hit two home runs with three RBI, continuing his sublime start to 2026.

Game 23: Yankees at Red Sox, Luis Gil vs. Connelly Early

Anytime the Yankees show up on the schedule, regardless of the standings, it presents an opportunity for either a dramatic shift in mood, or a dramatic amplification of whatever mood is already in place. Tonight is no different as the Red Sox and Yankees meet for the first time in 2026 with the Red Sox off to a horrible start, but still somehow only four games behind New York.

The good news for the Red Sox is they have the pitching advantage on paper tonight. The bad news is each game of the series presents a more unfavorable matchup on the mound. In other words, it would greatly behoove the Sox to grab this game tonight as a loss tonight could quickly start mounting the deficit by Thursday.

For Early, this matchup also presents an opportunity to turn the page on last year’s loss in New York during Game 3 of the Wild Card series when he was thrown into the fire just four starts into his major league career and outpitched by the extremely unlikeable Cam Schlittler.

Lineup wise, the odd man out in the latest chapter of the “five guys don’t fit into four spots” saga is once again Jarren Duran. Masataka Yoshida will bat third as the DH, and Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu once again make up what’s establishing itself as the best version of the Red Sox outfield.

It’s Red Sox vs. Yankees, and even on a cold Tuesday night in April, there’s still nothing else quite like it!

Why Carmen Mlodzinski has been Pirates best starting pitcher

CHICAGO, IL - APRIL 10: Carmen Mlodzinski #50 of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches during the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday, April 10, 2026 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Nick Loggarakis/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty Images

Entering the 2026 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates starting rotation contained the reigning Cy Young winner, the No. 2 pitching prospect in baseball, and the former franchise leader in strikeouts by a right-handed pitcher.

None of the three, or Braxton Ashcraft, have been the Pirates best starting pitcher this year.

It’s the guy everyone, including myself, thought was destined to start in the bullpen.

Carmen Mlodzinski has been Pittsburgh’s most consistent and most effective starter through the first month.

Hear me out.

The Pirates have one of the best rotations in baseball and contribute largely to the team’s 3.22 overall team ERA, the second-best in baseball.

Mlodzinski leads the rotation with a 1.77 ERA and is the only starter below 2.00. He’s only allowed four earned runs over 20.1 innings.

Paul Skenes’ ERA sits at 3.27 and is inflated due to five runs allowed and only recording two outs on Opening Day against the Mets, largely due to two defensive blunders. Skenes has allowed three runs in his other 21.1 innings.

When examining who’s been the best, it’s hard to ignore the expectation vs. reality.

Pirates fans and media members thought the Bucs were bound to sign a left-handed starting pitcher as the fifth starter out of camp, but it never happened.

The initial belief was that Jose Urquidy could be a bounce back option… he’s in Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mlodzinski recorded a career-high eight strikeouts in his first start against New York and has pitched deeper into games every outing, from 4.1 innings to 4.2, 5.1, and six full innings pitched.

In his last two starts against the preseason NL Central favorite Chicago Cubs at windy Wrigley, Mlodzinski allowed six hits, walked three, and struck out two, but a run didn’t cross the plate.

He appeared in relief of opener Mason Montgomery against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday and pitched arguably the best game of his MLB career.

Mlodzinski totaled a career-best six innings with two hits, two walks, five strikeouts, and another scoreless outing.

The 27-year-old starter hasn’t allowed a run in his last 12 innings.

Pirates starters didn’t allow a home run over the first three series. Mlodzinski hasn’t allowed one in four outings.

Mlodzinski isn’t overpowering hitters, but changing speeds and using solid location to put away the game’s best hitters.

Mlodzinski is in the 98th percentile in offspeed run value (3) and the 90th percentile in barrel percentage (1.7%). While opponents are hitting the ball hard off him 51.7% of the time (10th percentile),  his even ground ball rate of 51.7% has limited the damage.

The first full month of baseball has gone better than anyone could have imagined following a 6.04 ERA in five April starts in 2025.

Another concern for Mlodzinski was facing the lineup for a third time. In 9.1 frames past the third inning, Mlodzinski has given up only three runs.

In 11 innings over the first three innings, the starter has allowed one run and five total hits.

Not taking anything away from Skenes, Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft, or Bubba Chandler, who have all had great moments, Mlodzinski is pitching the best he’s pitched since the Pirates drafted him in 2020.

The Pirates are short on pitching depth after Johan Oviedo and Mike Burrows were dealt for bats, plus Jared Jones not expected back for another month.

Mlodzinski has been everything the Pirates could have asked for and more, but the key is sustaining it

Mlodzinski will start Tuesday night as the Pirates begin the first of three against the Texas Rangers.

First pitch is at 8:05 p.m. as Mlodzinski will pitch against the American League for the second time.

Seattle designates RHP Casey Legumina for assignment, calls up RHP Alex Hoppe

The Seattle Mariners announced Tuesday afternoon that they have designated RHP Casey Legumina for assignment, recalling rookie RHP Alex Hoppe for additional bullpen depth.

The move comes on the heels of a difficult outing for Legumina, but the righty had been reasonably effective in the early stages of the season prior to being tasked with the heart of the lefty-heavy Athletics order in the 8th inning of Monday night’s knotted affair. Asked predominantly for mop-up and low-leverage work, the Gonzaga product amassed a 5.43/4.15 ERA/FIP in 61.1 innings over the past two seasons with Seattle, a total of -0.9/0.0 bWAR/fWAR. At times, Legumina became the de facto long reliever for the M’s, pitching at least parts of multiple innings in half his appearances in 2026 and more than a handful a season ago. Though the Bean Man could be claimed to fill out another club’s bullpen, it’s plausible he passes through waivers and returns to Triple-A Tacoma for Seattle to call upon again.

His departure gives the Mariners a nearly fully rested bullpen headed into the final two tilts of a 13-game set without off days. The 27 year old Hoppe has yet to make his major league debut, having spent the first few weeks of 2026 with the Rainiers in Tacoma. Even without Legumina’s tough outing a night ago, Hoppe was pushing the M’s to make a move, with eight scoreless outings (well, one unearned run) as Tacoma’s de facto closer, punching out 12 and walking just three while yielding only four hits in 8.0 innings.

Nick Vitalis wrote Hoppe’s 40 in 40, which you can read here for some detail and a spectacular celebrity comp, and Kate should have some more details on Hoppe this afternoon to boot. The short of it is… Hoppe has had command issues, having been a 6th round pick out of UNC Greensboro by the Boston Red Sox in 2022 as a cost-saving senior sign whose expectation was to climb the ranks swiftly. Instead, it’s been a trickier traversal, with three rounds at Double-A Portland from 2023-2025 before cracking Triple-A Worcester last year.

As you can see from the clip below, Hoppe eschews some recent trends in pitch design and development. He’s “just” 6’1, but creates a steeper angle with a rather over-the-top delivery that makes his heater and breaking ball appear to tunnel well.

These pitches also make it difficult for hitters to elevate, as Hoppe has run high groundball rates for much of his career and has continued to do so in his short time this season. If and when he pitches for Seattle, he’ll be the first Mariners player to make their MLB debut in 2026.
