Bernstein’s layup lifts Washington State past Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Washington State coach Ernie Kent had empathy for Cal on Thursday night, but he was thrilled it was the Cougars who won 78-76 in a duel to escape last place in the Pac-12 Conference. Drick Bernstein scored a layup with 1.7 seconds left and the Cougars (11-16, 3-12) won for the first time in 10 road games to climb into 11th place. "For this team, with everything they've been through, similar to what Cal's gone through, to come down here and play a much-improved Cal team, it was just a grind-it-out win for us," Kent said. "I'm proud of my guys.

Bernstein’s layup lifts Washington State over Cal 78-76

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Drick Bernstein scored a layup with 1.7 seconds left and Washington State held off Cal 78-76 on Thursday night in a duel to escape last place in the Pac-12 Conference. There were five lead changes and three ties in the final 5 minutes, and Cal knotted the score at 76-all when Marcus Lee scored off a feed from Justice Sueing with 7.1 seconds left. But the Cougars (11-16, 3-12) hurried the ball up court and Malachi Flynn delivered the ball to Bernstein for the game-winner. Moments earlier, Flynn gave WSU a 76-74 lead when he made a 3-pointer with 24.4 seconds left. Robert Franks led the Cougars with 15 points and Bernstein, Flynn and Viont'e Daniels each scored 14.

Travis scores career-high 33 in Stanford’s 94-78 win over UW

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Reid Travis had a feeling it was his night. With a game against Washington earlier this season, he had extra film to watch and evaluate. Travis scored 23 of his career-high 33 points in the first half as Stanford jumped to an early lead on the way to a 94-78 victory over the Huskies on Thursday night. "Their bigs kind of like to stay back by the basket," Travis said. "I knew if I got big and could operate, I'd have a good game if I could finish. That was my mindset." Dorian Pickens added 20 points as the Cardinal (15-13, 9-6 Pac-12) kept their postseason hopes alive. Michael Humphrey added 15 points before fouling out in the final six minutes and Oscar Da Silva scored 14.

Thornton, Rivers lead Memphis past No. 23 Houston

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Houston struggled offensively, and its usual tough defense was missing in the second half. It looks as if it might be a short stay in the Top 25 for the Cougars. No. 23 Houston, which entered the AP poll this week for the first time this season, gave up a season high in points and suffered through a dismal second-half shooting performance in a 91-85 loss to Memphis on Thursday night, ending a five-game winning streak. Jimario Rivers and Raynere Thornton each scored 21 points as Memphis (17-11, 8-7 American Athletic Conference) earned its third straight victory. Rivers also grabbed nine rebounds and Thornton made four 3-pointers. Rob Gray had 30 points and seven assists for Houston. Armoni Brooks and Corey Davis Jr.
