A few weeks ago, it appeared the Utah Jazz might be headed to the draft lottery. ”They’ve got some good players, so I don’t think anybody was surprised they fought their way back in,” Portland guard Damian Lillard said. As the season picks back up following the All-Star break, the Jazz are riding an 11-game winning streak.

The NBA dunk contest was a throwback in many ways, with a 21-year-old rookie and a 25-year-old, third-year pro fighting it out for the trophy. Larry Nance Jr. rolled out his father’s old uniform — down to the knee-high socks — and then rolled out his father himself to help with one of his dunks. Mitchell put on a show at Staples Center to win the slam dunk contest and cap off NBA All-Star Saturday.

Rookie Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz put on a show in the slam dunk contest to cap off NBA All-Star Saturday. Mitchell edged Larry Nance Jr. by two points, sealing his victory with a close approximation of the 360-degree spin dunk that Vince Carter used to win the 2000 contest. ”I wanted this so badly,” Mitchell said.

Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell made a pair of powerful statements Wednesday about the shooting rampage at a Florida high school that left 17 dead: “Pray for Parkland” and “End Gun Violence.” But the rookie player didn’t tweet those words, nor did he issue a statement through his press representative: Instead, with a black magic marker in hand, he jotted down those messages on the side of his shoes. Following the game — Utah Jazz beat the Phoenix Suns 107-97 — Mitchell explained why school shootings struck a nerve with him. “My mom’s a schoolteacher,” the Connecticut native, 21, told reporters. “I was about 15, 20 minutes away during the Sandy Hook shooting. It’s kind of scary. I’m not saying

Derrick Rose, the 2011 NBA Most Valuable Player, cleared league waivers Monday and became a free agent, league sources told ESPN. There’s some interest in Rose, but no team has yet to make him a firm offer to sign him for the rest of the season, league sources told ESPN. Washington has considered the possibility of signing Rose in the wake of John Wall’s extended absence after knee surgery, but the team is looking at other candidates, too, league sources said. One of those could be former NBA guard Ty Lawson, who has been playing in China, sources told ESPN. Rose was waived on Saturday, in the wake of his trade to the Utah Jazz as a part of the?
