Breaking down the Kings’ 2017-18 preseason schedule

SACRAMENTO — The season is still months away, but the slow buildup has started. Thursday afternoon the Sacramento Kings announced their preseason schedule for the 2017-18 season and there is plenty of intrigue to look forward to. The Kings open their preseason schedule on Oct. 2 at the Golden 1 Center against the San Antonio Spurs. Under head coach Gregg Popovich, the Spurs won 61 games last season before falling to the Golden State Warriors in four games during the Western Conference Finals. They didn’t land Chris Paul, like early rumors suggested, but they roll into Sacramento with former King Rudy Gay and a team chalked full of veterans. Four days later, the Kings travel to the AT&T Center

Rajon Rondo, Pelicans agree to 1-year deal worth $3.3. million

Rajon Rondo has agreed to a one-year, $3.3. million deal, with the New Orleans Pelicans, according to the Vertical’s Shams Charania. Rondo had taken a backseat as point guard free agency mostly sorted itself out, and the Pelicans and Lakers were the only teams who reportedly had serious conversations with the veteran. But the Pelicans finalized the deal, most likely to help convince free agent-to be DeMarcus Cousins to stay in New Orleans. Cousins and Rondo both played together two seasons ago with the Sacramento Kings. In New Orleans, Rondo is expected to start, according to coach Alvin Gentry, despite that the team just invested $126 million in another guard, Jrue Holiday, this summer. The

While we wait for NBA jersey releases, a fan designed his own, and they’re awesome

It’s now been more than 24 hours since Nike, about to enter its first season as the NBA’s on-court apparel provider, released the framework for its first set of NBA jerseys. The announcement of the elimination of “home” and “road” designations, along with the reveal of the Golden State Warriors’ new white jersey, sparked intrigue and discussion among niches of the NBA internet. Or, while we wait, we can treat ourselves to jerseys designed by a fan that might end up being more impressive than the actual jersey designs.

Re-signing Otto Porter was never a doubt for Wizards

Often times head coach Scott Brooks, team president Ernie Grunfeld and even Porter himself would refer to each other as one when discussing the future beyond the 2016-17 season. The Nets made him a max offer sheet that the Wizards matched.

Jimmy Butler on first game back in Chicago: ‘I’m just gonna try to score like five points’

When your team is no longer in playoff contention it’s always a good time to look forward. The Bulls finally have a direction after trading Jimmy Butler on draft night and will go to a youth movement to build the talent pool back up. And with free agency pretty much wrapped up (although Derrick Rose is making noise) it’s time to look at where Fred Hoiberg’s group stands among the teams looking for the most ping-pong balls on Lottery night next May. The numbers in parentheses are the projected over-under win totals in Las Vegas: Brooklyn Nets (20.5 wins) The good news? Brooklyn had an excellent offseason. The bad news? It’s going to take way more than one good string of moves to fix this mess.

Posing as Adele’s manager gets con man NBA players’ sneakers … and felony charges

Paul George and Victor Oladipo were both victims of a weird South Florida con. If you’re an NBA fan and a sneakerhead, you’ve probably wondered once or twice how you might be able to get some of the official exclusive kicks worn by your favorite players without having to sell all your earthly possessions, swear off solid food, and get in over your head with the kind of lenders who might wind up breaking the arm and leg that the gear winds up costing. No, not the UNC Justin Jackson who just got drafted by the Sacramento Kings.

The NBA is ditching traditional ‘home and away’ uniforms

Starting Oct. 1, Nike will be the new sporting apparel company for the NBA. And their first order of business will be ditching home and away uniforms, according to a press release from Nike. Here’s a look at what the jerseys will look like. (via Nike) Rather than labeling their home and away garbs traditionally, Nike is renaming them “Association edition” which would have been home colors and “Icon edition” which would have been away colors. Teams will have, at least, four jersey options to choose from in each game, according to a report from ESPN’s Nick DePaula. There will be eight other teams in the league with “classic” color ways. It’s unclear what The Athlete Mindset and The Community editions

Fictional rookies show promise at summer league, according to ‘diehard’ Lakers fans

The Kings got ‘die-hard’ Lakers fans to analyze rookies that don’t exist

While Lakers fans are reveling in a Summer League MVP performance by Lonzo Ball, there are two more rookies lighting it up who deserve attention: Shawn Carter and Ned Stark. At least, according to the Sacramento Kings. The Kings descended on Las Vegas to ask some die-hard Lakers fans about their other rookies — the only problem is they don’t exist. Shawn Carter is Jay Z’s real name, while Ned Stark was famously beheaded in the first season of Game of Thrones. In these fans’ defense: Unless you’re a serious, serious fan it’s tough to keep track of everyone on your team’s Summer league roster. That said, it’s not like these names are even halfway convincing. Nobody picked up on either name being

Instant Analysis: Five takeaways from Kings’ loss to Mavericks

The Kings will receive a 2019 second-round pick and cash considerations from the Knicks as part of the deal, NBC Sports California has confirmed. “The Kings are forging a strong future for themselves, and while this was a tough decision, I could not pass up a promotion to become the General Manager of the New York Knicks and chance to be near my daughter in New York,” Perry said in a statement. “I am so thankful to Vivek, Vlade, the leadership team, and the entire Kings organization for my time in Sacramento. The Kings are a hard-working team with a lot of heart and I have no doubt they are on a path to enormous success. I wish them all the luck in the world, but I have a feeling they won’t need

Knicks hire Scott Perry as new GM, but how much control will he have?

Former Kings, Pistons, Sonics and Magic executive Scott Perry will be the Knicks’ new general manager. A little more than two weeks after the New York Knicks rid themselves of Phil Jackson and moved on from a front office experiment that was tumbling toward failure, the franchise has found a new executive to help chart a new path forward: recently hired Sacramento Kings vice president of basketball operations Scott Perry. Jackson’s role as team president will be assumed by Steve Mills, who served as the Knicks’ general manager under Jackson and is now in charge of the show.

Don’t sleep on the retooled, Gordon Hayward-less Utah Jazz

Utah Jazz rookie guard Donovan Mitchell could be the steal of the draft. The Utah Jazz lost Gordon Hayward, and that left a sour taste in the mouths of Rudy Gobert and a host of others in Salt Lake City, but GM Dennis Lindsey sure is squeezing those lemons for all their worth. The Jazz managed to save a few million dollars by trading for Minnesota Timberwolves wunderkind Ricky Rubio and letting two-way contributor George Hill walk for more money from the Sacramento Kings, but they were still cap-strapped in a city that already struggles to lure substantial free agents.

Former EKU head coach reportedly hired as Knicks’ new general manager

The man the New York Knicks have reportedly hired as their new general manager was, in another life, the head coach of the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels. Scott Perry, was head coach at EKU from 1997-2000. He was never a head coach before that, and after going 19-61 over three seasons, he was never a head coach again. Perry, most recently joined the Sacramento Kings’ front office in April after five seasons with the Orlando Magic. On Friday, CSN Chicago reported that Perry has reached an agreement to become the new general manager of the Knicks. Steve Mills, the team’s current GM, is expected to become Knicks’ president, the job recently vacated by Phil Jackson. Scott Perry was hired as

Report: Knicks in talks to make Scott Perry team’s new GM

After the Orlando Magic had let him go right after the season, the Sacramento Kings swooped in and picked up Scott Perry to serve as an assistant GM. It was a move applauded around the league as Perry is widely respected, and the Kings then went on to have their best off-season in a long time (Perry alone is not responsible for that, but in Las Vegas a lot of other teams thought Perry had a huge influence on the Kings’ moves). Now the Knicks are talking about bringing Perry in to become their general manager, working under team president Steve Mills, reports Adrian Wojnarowski and Ian Begley of ESPN.
