MONSTERUSS: Westbrook erupts for 57 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists in overtime win

By Brett Dawson Staff Writer bdawson@oklahoman.com

ORLANDO, Fla. – This should be almost impossible.

Russell Westbrook shouldn’t be able to swoop in like this, to erase with a singular burst of brilliance three-plus quarters of his team’s sloppy offense and sluggish D. Once in a blue moon, maybe, he should save the day in this way.

He’s done it twice this week.

The Magic fell victim on Wednesday to Westbrook’s super-heroism, watching as he finished with 57 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in a 114-106 overtime win.

Oladipo gets warm welcome in Orlando return

By Brett Dawson Staff Writer bdawson@oklahoman.com

ORLANDO, Fla. – Victor Oladipo just didn’t want to be booed.

The Thunder guard had spent three seasons with the Magic before he was traded to Oklahoma City last summer, and on Wednesday when he played his first game back at the Amway Center since that move, he was rooting for a warm welcome.

“If I get an ovation, it’d be nice, man,” Oladipo said at Wednesday’s shootaround.

He got two of them in the Thunder’s 114-106 overtime win.

Fans cheered Oladipo when he was introduced in OKC’s starting lineup, and applauded lightly again after a first-quarter timeout, when the Magic played a tribute video that began with Oladipo being drafted second overall in 2013 and concluded with a string of highlights of him in an Orlando uniform.

“I’m appreciative of my years here,” Oladipo said before the game.

Donovan: Nothing to report on Dayton’s reported interest in Grant

Brett Dawson

ORLANDO, Fla. – Anthony Grant reportedly is among the candidates for the head coaching job at at the University of Dayton, but Thunder coach Billy Donovan said there’s “nothing necessarily to report” on his assistant coach’s candidacy.

ESPN reported on Wednesday that Grant is among the candidates to replace Flyers head coach Archie Miller, who last Saturday took the same position at Indiana.

“He’s a good coach, and there’s gonna be people that are gonna want to inquire about him,” Donovan said of Grant, who played at Dayton from 1983-87.

Return to Orlando brings back memories for Oladipo

Brett Dawson

ORLANDO, Fla. – When he played here, Victor Oladipo wandered into the visitors’ locker room a few times, he said, and so it wasn’t an entirely uncomfortable setting on Wednesday.

It was in fact “pretty cool,” Oladipo said, to walk in and sit down there before Wednesday’s shootaround as a member of the Thunder.

Thunder: Thunder finding offense but seeking stops for stretch run

By Brett Dawson Staff Writer bdawson@oklahoman.com

ORLANDO — It was Russell Westbrook who rose up and made the shot that sunk the Dallas Mavericks on Monday.

But it was team defense that kept Oklahoma City afloat.

Westbrook’s game-winner with 7.1 seconds to play capped a furious Thunder comeback and a 92-91 win in Dallas.

Thunder journal: Oladipo makes first return to Orlando to face Magic

By Brett Dawson Staff Writer bdawson@oklahoman.com

ORLANDO — Victor Oladipo spent the first three seasons of his NBA career here, and on Wednesday he’ll return for the first time with his new team.

If that’s igniting any emotion in the Thunder guard, he’s doing a terrific job of hiding it.

“No,” Oladipo said in Dallas on Monday when asked if he’d given much thought to his return to his first NBA home.

Thunder: Westbrook hits game-winner with 7.1 seconds left against Dallas

By Brett Dawson Staff Writer bdawson@oklahoman.com

DALLAS — Russell Westbrook missed.

The Thunder was in the midst of a near-miracle comeback against the Mavericks on Monday, and Westbrook had lined up a 19-foot jumper for the lead with 19 seconds to play and misfired.

In the ensuing Mavericks timeout, Westbrook had a message for his coach, Billy Donovan.

“I told him, ‘I’m not missing another one,’” Westbrook said.

Seconds later, he played the prophet and the hero.

Thunder journal: Thunder still tinkering with big, small lineups

By Brett Dawson Staff Writer bdawson@oklahoman.com

DALLAS — Bigger, in the modern NBA, isn’t always better.

And as the Thunder works down the stretch to iron out its rotation, coach Billy Donovan is trying to balance the line between overpowering opponents with size and keeping step with offenses that are fleet afoot.

“We clearly, when teams want to play small, we have an advantage with size and you try to get your size into the game,” Donovan said Monday before the Thunder trimmed the Mavericks 92-91 at American Airlines Center.
