Summer agenda: Timberwolves, 76ers have plenty of flexibility this summer

Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns, left, goes up for a shot against Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid in a January game. Since signing a $60 million contract in 2013, Nikola Pekovic has played just 99 games because of injury. After missing the 2016-17 season because of a recurring right ankle injury, Minnesota is now eligible to remove the last year of his $11.6 million salary from the salary cap.

KG says he doesn’t ‘see eye-to-eye’ with Wolves ownership

The playoffs have started, and after a season out of the NBA for the first time in more than two decades, Kevin Garnett’s body is starting to talk to him. ”You get sweaty at night and I’m tossing and turning,” Garnett told The Associated Press in a phone interview. Retirement has not extinguished the fire that burned in him for 21 NBA seasons, nor has it healed the wounds opened during an acrimonious split with the Minnesota Timberwolves last summer.

Kevin Garnett didn’t want to leave the Timberwolves

Garnett says he didn’t see eye-to-eye with ownership, nor did he appreciate how they handled Flip Saunders’ passing. Kevin Garnett wanted to remain a part of the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise that drafted him out of high school and watched as he developed into one of the league’s most fearsome power forwards. “I love those young guys,” Garnett said about Minnesota’s triplet of youngsters, Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, and Zach LaVine.

Report: Kevin Durant unlikely to play in Warriors-Trail Blazers Game 2

The Warriors list Kevin Durant as questionable with a strained calf. Sam Amick of USA Today: Doubtful does not mean out. Durant could still play, and the team has time to make a determination. But calf injuries can linger if not fully healed. Golden State should err on the side of caution. Already up 1-0, the Warriors can always press Durant into action later in the series if Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson can’t put away Portland themselves.

LeBron James’ classic reaction to obvious traveling call (VIDEO)

LeBron James was at the center of the first playoff game this season, putting up numbers and keeping the Cavaliers in front of the Pacers — LeBron had 14 first half points and a dozen more in the third quarter. But the best player on the planet made a mistake middle-school coach preaches — don’t leave the ground with the ball in your hand unless you have a plan. LeBron’s options dried up, and he landed for the travel. Then was trying not to laugh. LeBron and the Cavs’ offense has been clicking, and he was doing some great stuff as well.

Timberwolves owner Taylor expecting big jump next season

Minnesota Timberwolves coach and president Tom Thibodeau is meeting with his staff to put together an aggressive game plan for the summer in hopes of adding some defensive tenacity to a young team that never quite got it on that end of the floor in his first season on the job. Owner Glen Taylor hopes the stability of having the same coach for two straight seasons for the first time since 2013 will help the team move past yet another disappointing season. Thibodeau is the Wolves’ fourth coach in the last four seasons.

Carmelo Anthony thought he’d get traded during season, now his Knicks future ‘all on me’

Carmelo Anthony recently said there was an “opportunity” of being dealt from the Knicks to Clippers before the trade deadline. But what did that mean? Any potential Anthony trade is complicated by needing the approval of three parties: Knicks Another team Anthony, who holds a no-trade clause But maybe there was significant headway toward a deal, to L.A. or otherwise. At least Anthony says he thought there was. Ian Begley of ESPN: If Anthony thought he’d be elsewhere, that means he thought he’d waive his no-trade clause — a telling admission, considering Anthony has always said he wouldn’t allow a trade (though he left open the door to change his mind). It’ll still take the right circumstances.

Best of NBA: With Tony Romo in uniform, Mavericks lose to Nuggets

DALLAS — Gary Harris scored 20 points and the Denver Nuggets beat Dallas 109-91 on Tuesday night with the Mavericks honoring retiring Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as a ceremonial player. With nothing at stake in a lost season that will be the worst for Dallas (32-49) since going 20-62 in 1997-98, the Mavericks followed through with an idea hatched in part by star Dirk Nowitzki weeks ago when it was clear Romo wasn’t returning to the Cowboys. Romo was honored exactly a week after announcing he was leaving football to become the No. 1 NFL analyst at CBS. The soon-to-be-37-year-old had the crowd on its feet in the final minute hoping he could play, but Romo wasn’t on the roster or under contract.

LeBron James criticizes officiating in Cavaliers’ loss to Hawks

Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue called the Cavaliers’ loss to the Hawks on Sunday “stupid.” If only he waited a couple days for perspective. Cleveland lost again to Atlanta on Sunday, blowing a 26-point fourth-quarter lead. LeBron James stewed after the game, taking issue with three specific calls down the stretch. All quotes via Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com. On his five-second inbound violation with 18.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter: “It was pretty quick,” James said of the five-second count. On trying to call a timeout before Kyrie Irving got tied up with 4.9 seconds left in overtime: “He told me that I’m not allowed to call timeout because he didn’t know who had possession of the ball,” James
