Kyrie Irving nets 47 as Celtics come from behind for 16th straight win

The Boston Celtics’ 16-game winning streak has been built on big comebacks and consistent crunchtime dominance. The Dallas Mavericks became the most recent victim Monday night, as the Celtics rallied from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to pull out a 110-102 overtime victory, fueled by All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving’s spectacular efficient, season-high 47-point performance. It marked the eighth comeback win during Boston’s streak, which is three games shy of tying the franchise record set during the 2008-09 season. The Celtics trailed by double digits in five of those comebacks, including their past three games, when they trailed the Golden State Warriors by 17, the Atlanta Hawks by 16 and the Mavericks by 13 before pulling out wins.

Coming off a signature win over Golden State just on Thursday, no one would have been shocked if the Boston Celtics had a bit of a letdown against the three-win Atlanta Hawks. To get to 15, C’s need to keep up the D

If you were to deconstruct the building blocks of the Celtics’ 14-game winning streak, you would find the foundation lies in what they’re able to accomplish defensively. While the Hawks (3-12) have had their struggles this season, it hasn’t necessarily been because of selfish play offensively.

Kings, Hawks mired in dismal starts

The Sacramento Kings may be just the opponent that the Atlanta Hawks need to get their first home victory of the season. The Kings take a seven-game road losing streak into Wednesday night’s game at Philips Arena and have lost 10 straight in Atlanta. Sacramento’s 3-10 record this season is slightly less dismal than Atlanta’s 2-12, but the Kings’ futility in Atlanta at least gives the Hawks a historical edge.

Miller’s late 3s rescue Pelicans in 106-105 win over Hawks

A couple of seasons overseas appears to have turned Darius Miller into the clutch jump shooter the Pelicans hoped they were getting when they made him a second-round draft choice in 2012. Miller hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, when he scored 14 of his career-high 21 points, and New Orleans overcame a sloppy performance to beat the struggling Atlanta Hawks 106-105 on Monday night. ”I feel like I’m finally getting into a shooting rhythm,” Miller said.

Hawks will have hands full with Pelicans’ Davis, Cousins

The New Orleans Pelicans, winners of four of their last five games to improve to 7-6, are garnering attention across the league with the eye-popping numbers posted by Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins. The Atlanta Hawks, at 2-11, have the worst record in the NBA but have been playing opponents closer of late. Despite committing turnovers at a rate usually reserved for the digital clock in Times Square that tracks the national debt, the Pelicans are the clear favorites entering Monday night’s game at the Smoothie King Center.
