Brett Brown: Ben Simmons can be ‘elite multi-purpose defensive player’

BOSTON — Isaiah Thomas’ two sons had different reactions to his trade from the Celtics to the Cavaliers. His older son, James, is excited that his dad will get to play alongside LeBron James. Thomas’ younger son, Jaiden, had fallen in love with Boston and was afraid that Cleveland won’t have any skate parks. Thomas said in a 3,500-word post on The Players Tribune that he himself was also of two minds about the deal that sent him to the Cavaliers, along with two other players and a first-round draft pick, for fellow All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving. He says hearing about the trade in a call from Celtics boss Danny Ainge “still hurts.” But he’s also excited about playing with James, a four-time

Part 2 of 2017 Fantasy Basketball rookie preview: Guys who need time

Jayson Tatum could have a tough time finding fantasy relevance in his first year with the Boston Celtics. Part I of our rookie preview covered six rookies in the best position to provide fantasy value this season. Jonathan Isaac, Orlando Magic: Physically, Isaac is one of the most impressive rookies in the class, but he’s not as NBA-ready as Fultz, Ball, Jackson, Tatum, or Smith.

Free Agency Winners and Losers

Last season, Oladipo shot a career-high from the floor (44.2 percent) and 3-point range (36.1 percent). This was because Oladipo often got lost in the whirlwind that was Russell Westbrook’s incredible assault on the record books. Despite shooting efficiently and taking care of the ball (he averaged a career-low 1.8 turnovers per game), Oladipo recorded a usage rate of just 21.4%, the lowest of his career.

NBA Notes: Video shows Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving apparently mocking LeBron James

NEWPORT, R.I. — Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry was caught on video apparently mocking LeBron James during a wedding over the weekend, while James’ Cavaliers teammate Kyrie Irving eggs him on. Retired Cavaliers player Brendan Haywood posted the video on Instagram Sunday, with a message saying “shots fired at somebody” and the hashtag (hash)kingwontlikethis. It shows the two-time NBA MVP pretending to work out with exaggerated moves, an apparent reference to video that James posted on social media that sparked a flurry of fan imitation videos dubbed the (hash)LeBronJamesChallenge. Diamond Stone waived by Atlanta Hawks

Former Maryland center Diamond Stone was waived by the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, as first reported by the Atlanta Constitution-Journal. Stone was acquired from the Clippers in a trade earlier this month and played for Atlanta in the Vegas Summer League, averaging nine points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He was on a guaranteed contract and figured to get an honest shot at playing time, but the Hawks apparently had other plans. If Stone isn’t picked up by another NBA team, he’ll most likely return to the G-League, where he saw some action last year in between stints with Los Angeles. The Hawks still have Dewayne Dedmon, Mike Muscala and Miles Plumlee at center, and 2017 first-round pick John Collins

Hardaway on Knicks’ massive offer: ‘Man, that’s crazy’

After signing a four-year, $71 million offer sheet to join the Knicks, guard Tim Hardaway Jr. was still surprised that New York offered him such a significant deal, according to ESPN’s Pablo Torre. “Tim Hardaway Jr.’s first words after signing that contract: ‘Man, that’s crazy,’ ” Torre said, according to NBC Sports’ Dan Feldman. The Knicks’ offer was approximately $25 million more than what Hardaway was projected to earn, according to SB Nation’s Phil Veasley. Knicks president Steve Mills said the team needed to be “aggressive” when pursuing Hardaway, a restricted free agent with the Atlanta Hawks, because he felt Hardaway had a lot of potential. “We felt like there are not that many opportunities
