Jazz shootaround: Hayward, Cousins both questionable for Jazz-Pelicans game

Two all-stars could be reduced to watching from the bench tonight, as the Jazz and Pelicans square off in a late-season contest with plenty on the line for each team.
Jazz forward Gordon Hayward did not participate in shootaround Monday after sustaining an injury to his left quadriceps on Saturday. He is officially listed as questionable for the game.
Pelicans big man DeMarcus Cousins, meanwhile, is also listed as questionable on his team’s injury report, after missing a Sunday night contest in …

Utah Jazz blog: Jazz clinch playoff spot

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?
OK. Let’s go with the good news.
The Utah Jazz are going to the postseason for the first time since 2012. The Jazz needed either the Nuggets or Trail Blazers to lose Sunday to clinch a playoff berth. Denver delivered in a big way, losing 115-90 to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Now the (potentially) bad news for a Jazz team struggling to find its form lately while still trying to hold onto the No. 4 seed, and the home-court advantage that comes with it…

Utah Jazz blog: John Stockton won’t give today’s stars a pass for resting

One summer during his Hall of Fame career, John Stockton bought a ticket to a baseball game. The legendary Jazz point guard won’t say who it was, but there was one player in particular he was going to see. Turns out, on that particular day, the guy sat out, didn’t play, rested.
“I was incensed,†Stockton recalled. “And I’ve never rooted or really particularly cared for that guy since.â€
Stockton played the full 82 games in 16 of his 19 seasons as a pro. So while the debate over NBA teams resting …

Video: John Stockton re-enacts ‘The Shot’ and sinks it on his first attempt

The members of the Utah Jazz’s 1997 NBA Finals team have been hanging out together the last couple of days in Salt Lake City, sharing a few laughs and memories of the best season in franchise history.
And — no surprise at all — one memory keeps coming up.
“The shot that got us to the final is what sticks out in everybody’s mind,†John Stockton said Wednesday.
Stockton’s 3-pointer in Houston remains perhaps the most iconic moment in Jazz history.
At the team’s practice facility Wednesday, Stockto…

Utah Jazz: New look for Vivint Smart Home Arena will include cushioned seats for all

What’s big and white and green all over?
Not Vivint Smart Home Arena.
Not next year at least.
The 19,000 or so bright green, plastic seats fans have plopped down into since the Delta Center opened in 1991 are getting the heave-ho. As part of a $110-million renovation set to be competed before next season, thousands of new “fully upholstered, plush back and contour foam seatsâ€â€” all of them “Jazz navy blue†in color — will be installed in the downtown arena.
“While we will all miss the green seats…

Jazz shootaround: Jazz have become adept at shaking off bad losses

A defining characteristic of the Jazz this season has been their ability to acquire a next game, next play mentality.
Losses that may have bothered Quin Snyder and his crew in previous seasons haven’t affected them this year, beyond the immediate aftermath of the loss.
For instance: When the Jazz suffered arguably their worst defeat of the season a few weeks ago at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves, they shook it off, while the outside noise around the franchise was significant.
“I’m…

Jazz shootaround: Rudy Gobert on track to suit up against the Clippers

Rudy Gobert will be a game-time decision for the Jazz’s important matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers tonight. But the Jazz center says his right leg feels “way better†and he seems to think it’s more likely than not he’ll be on the court.
“I felt good this morning,†Gobert said after going through the team’s shootaround. “So we’ll see, but I should be fine.â€
Gobert missed Saturday’s game, a Jazz loss to the Thunder, after experiencing some pain in his leg, an injury that flared up after getti…

Jazz shootaround: ‘Big stretch’ and tough tests await in season’s final weeks

Houston • The Utah Jazz’s last two victories haven’t exactly inspired tremendous confidence.
They’ve needed some late-game heroics and good fortune to escape with a win over the lottery-bound Kings then had to fight off a disappointing Pelicans team.
But a win, as they say, is a win.
And we’re about to see if they have what it takes to win against some of the NBA’s best.
“This is a big stretch for us,†shooting guard Rodney Hood said.
The Jazz will square off with three straight Western Conferen…

Utah Jazz shootaround: Stopping Thunder’s Westbrook No. 1 defensive priority

The challenge for the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night when defending the Oklahoma City Thunder is simple: contain Russell Westbrook.
You won’t find many instances where something simple can be so difficult.
The Thunder go as Westbrook goes this season. Stopping OKC’s star point guard has proven next to impossible.
The two teams have split their two games this season. Westbrook shot 6 of 24 from the field when the Jazz won. He scored 38 points and hit the game-deciding shot when the Thunder won…

Utah Jazz shootaround: Jazz eager to see how a fully healthy roster plays together

<freeform>
<strong>Milwaukee •</strong> The Utah Jazz hope to see the beginning of a trend when the Jazz face the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night at the Bradley Center.
And that’s a healthy roster.
Shooting guard Rodney Hood will return as expected from injury and play in Milwaukee after missing almost a month due to a balky knee. There are 25 games remaining in the regular season, and the Jazz rarely have played with a healthy roster.
One reason the Jazz brass stayed put a…

Gordon Hayward receives positive feedback for gesture before All-Star Game

<freeform>
Gordon Hayward’s 17 minutes of playing time Sunday in New Orleans were relatively uneventful by NBA All-Star Game standards.
But the Utah Jazz forward caused some buzz before the ball was tipped off.
As the players stood for the national anthem, Hayward was the only member of the Western Conference team to place his hand over his heart — a gesture that did not go unnoticed online after the team had posted a photo to its official Twitter account.

Gordon Hayward keeps busy schedule at all-star weekend

Gordon Hayward signed autographs and made a few public appearances Thursday.
Hayward spoke to the media Friday morning and quickly was wisked away to paint houses and do community service.
Yep. All-Star weekend has been a whirlwind for the Utah Jazz small forward.
“They take you from place to place pretty quickly,†Hayward said.
The first 24 hours has been much of what Hayward has expected. He’s recieved congratulations from fellow all-stars welcoming him to the club. He’s hardly slept. His sm…

Joel Bolomboy to play in D-League All-Star Game

The Jazz’s contingent for All-Star Weekend grew on Thursday.
Jazz draft pick and Salt Lake City Stars mainstay Joel Bolomboy has been selected as a replacement player and will participate in the D-League All-Star Game in New Orleans on Saturday. He joins Gordon Hayward (NBA All-Star Game, Skills Challenge) and Dante Exum and Trey Lyles (Rising Stars Challenge) in the Crescent City.
The game will tip off at 12:30 p.m. MST at the Superdome and will be broadcast on NBA TV.

Jazz shootaround: Focus squarely on defense entering matchup with Clippers

When the Utah Jazz face the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night, the goal within the game for the Jazz will be clear: Defense has to be a team thing.
That was a theme coming out of Saturday’s ugly loss to the Boston Celtics, a game where Boston got any and everything it wanted offensively.
“We have to play as a unit,†Jazz forward Gordon Hayward said. “Defense takes all five guys. If everyone isn’t connected, it isn’t going to work.â€
The Jazz couldn’t get stops against the Celtics, which nega…

Utah Jazz announce which ad will appear on game jerseys

The Utah Jazz will join other NBA teams next season in adding a sponsored patch to their uniforms, but with a charitable twist.
For their first-ever jersey patch, the Jazz are partnering with Qualtrics, a Provo research software company. The patch, however, will not feature the Utah company’s name, but rather the name of a cancer research charity called “5 For the Fight.â€
“We believe today we are an example of how organizations can work together for the greater good,†Jazz president Steve Starks…

Utah Jazz blog: Slowing down Celtics’ Thomas in fourth quarter a priority

The mission for the Utah Jazz on Saturday night is to figure out a way to slow Isaiah Thomas down in the fourth quarter.
It seems like an easier task on the surface than it is in reality. Thomas has been one of the best players in the NBA in the fourth quarter — the time where you want to be one of the best players in the NBA.
That’s why the Boston Celtics are dangerous and unique in their own right. That’s also why the Celtics are 34-19 on the season and in second place in the Eastern Confer…

Jazz shootaround: Shelvin Mack returns to team after quick stop to see high school jersey retired

<freeform>
New Orleans • This three-game road trip included an extra stop for Jazz point guard Shelvin Mack.
Mack returned home Tuesday to Lexington, Ky., where Bryan Station High School retired the No. 10 jersey he wore when he starred there from 2004 to 2008.
“It still hasn’t hit me yet, but it’s a great accomplishment,†Mack said Wednesday morning, back with the Jazz for their shootaround at Smoothie King Center. “It’s something special. You know whenever you go back to your high school…

Jazz shootaround: Kemba Walker’s health an interesting subplot to Saturday’s game

The Utah Jazz are attempting to build momentum ahead of what is shaping up as a difficult road trip, but that won’t be easy on Saturday night.
The Jazz will face the Charlotte Hornets, who are led by dynamic point guard Kemba Walker. A first time all-star, Walker is listed as questionable for Saturday night. He didn’t practice on Friday because of an illness. But if he does play, you can bet he’ll be a load.
Last season, he lit the Jazz up for 52 points in a Hornets win in Charlotte. This year,…
