Jazz: Illinois’ Malcom Hill shows promise in pre-draft workout

Illinois’ Malcolm Hill was a late addition to Saturday morning’s Utah Jazz pre-draft workout. But he was able to make an impression regardless.
Shooting the ball off screens, showcasing his scoring ability and his playmaking acumen, Hill was able to endear himself to Jazz brass in a workout that also featured 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall from the University of Central Florida.
“[Hill] is a very good player,†Jazz VP of Player Personnel Walt Perrin said. “He had a good year this year, but not a great ye…

Jazz: George Hill to miss Game 4

Jazz point guard George Hill will miss Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals Monday night against the Golden State Warriors at Vivint Smart Home Arena, coach Quin Snyder said before the game.
Hill has missed the past two games of the series with a toe injury, and Shelvin Mack has stepped into the starting lineup in Hill’s place. Mack is the team’s third-leading scorer (10.3 points per game) behind Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert through three games in the series. Mack will start on Monday …

Quin Snyder: We need to play with more desperation early

Whether you call it urgency or desperation, Jazz coach Quin Snyder would like to see more of it from his team from the opening tip of Saturday night’s Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals.
The Jazz return to Salt Lake City trailing 0-2 in their series with the two-time defending conference champion Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have led by six points at the end of the first quarter of Game 1 and by 12 point at halftime. The Warriors jumped out to a 18-point, 33-15, lead after the op…

Utah Jazz shootaround: Jazz want to make statement in Game 1 that they won’t be pushed around

San Francisco • The Golden State Warriors already had one shootaround today, getting in some light workouts and game planning ahead of Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal matchup. The Utah Jazz want to make sure the league’s best team doesn’t think they’ll be getting another one tonight at Oracle Arena.
“I think this is an important game for us to let them know that we’re here and it’s not going to be a walkthrough or anything,†Jazz forward Gordon Hayward said.
Hayward was smiling afte…

Jazz shootaround: Jazz must try to impose their will early in Game 6

With a win tonight in Game 6 at Vivint Smart Home Arena, the Utah Jazz can win their first playoff series since 2010, a milestone for the current roster and the rebuilding effort spearheaded by general manager Dennis Lindsey and the coaching staff led by Quin Snyder.
All the Jazz have to do is beat a Clippers team starving for postseason success and led by one of the best point guard of his generation in Chris Paul. At this point in the best-of-seven series, both teams know exactly what they’ve…

Jazz shootaround: Rocking arena presents challenges for home team, too

The Utah Jazz are especially preparing for crowd noise as they get ready for Friday night’s Game 3 against the Los Angeles Clippers
That’s because Vivint Smart Home Arena is expected to be loud.
It’s Utah’s first home playoff game since 2012, and probably the first home playoff game since 2010 where the home team has a decent chance to win, even without Rudy Gobert. The Jazz were swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round in 2012.
The crowd noise has the potential to cause issues for th…

Jazz shootaround: Hayward says Jazz must be ‘as desperate’ as Clippers in Game 2

Let the mind games begin entering Tuesday’s Game 2.
The Jazz won the opener in Los Angeles, and of course both teams are looking to gain an edge in any way possible.
There was Clippers guard Raymond Felton, who said he almost wishes Utah’s Rudy Gobert “would come back and play†because he thought the Jazz played better without their injured center.
There was all-star Gordon Hayward, who said the Jazz needed to “be as desperate†as the Clippers figure to be Tuesday night.
This is just the beg…

Utah Jazz podcast: An opening win and what comes next in Jazz-Clippers series

First there was agony.
Then there was ecstasy.
And now comes reality.
After Joe Johnson’s buzzer-beater saved the Utah Jazz in Game 1, the team will have to find other ways to overcome Rudy Gobert’s knee injury if they’re going to advance beyond the first round.
Tribune reporters Tony Jones and Aaron Falk, joined by KSL’s Andy Larsen and the Orange County Register’s Bill Oram, discuss the ins and outs of a wild opening game, and look ahead to what the rest of this Jazz-Clippers series could brin…

Utah Jazz podcast: Closer look at Game 1 of the playoffs

<freeform>
It has been five years since the Utah Jazz’s last trip to the postseason. It hasn’t been quite that long since the last time we got together for a podcast, but Tony and I ended our own drought last night.

KSL.com’s Andy Larsen joined us to discuss Game 1 of the Jazz’s first-round series with the Clippers: How much does Gordon Hayward’s free-agency decision hinge on Utah’s success? What does this postseason mean for the Clippers, who have several stars headed for free agency th…

Utah Jazz healthy, ready for physical nature of playoffs

Banged up and bruised, the Utah Jazz had almost full participation in Friday’s practice before the team was scheduled to head to Los Angeles in advance of Saturday’s playoff series-opening game against the Clippers in the Staples Center.
Reserve guard Raul Neto was the only player who did not participate in practice despite Gordon Hayward, George Hill, Derrick Favors and Rodney Hood all having limped to the regular-season finish line in recent weeks.
The Jazz sat Hayward, who’d been dealing with…

Jazz shootaround: With first-round opponent set, Jazz peek ahead at Clippers

The Jazz still have something to play for in tonight’s regular season finale. A win over the San Antonio Spurs and a Clippers loss to the Kings would give the Jazz home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, which start this weekend.
But with their first-round open locked in, the Jazz have started to peek ahead to their matchup with Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and the Clippers.
“It’s natural that you kind of start to look at the playoffs because things are set,†Jazz forward Gordon …

Injury bug takes huge bite out of Jazz lineup vs. Warriors

The Jazz look to be especially shorthanded Monday against the Golden State Warriors. That’s saying something for a team that’s only played 13 games with its preferred starting lineup.
Derrick Favors and Rodney Hood both are out in moves that essentially amount to rest. Raul Neto, who badly sprained his ankle against the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday, is out, and a timetable for his return isn’t yet available.
Gordon Hayward, who tweaked his quad, will also sit out.
The good news? George Hi…

‘Stayward’ billboard urging Gordon Hayward to re-sign with the Jazz reaches its goal

<freeform>
A fan-funded campaign to buy a billboard asking Gordon Hayward, who will be a free agent this summer, to stay in Utah reached it’s $5,000 goal Friday.
The efforts made a positive impression on Hayward even before that milestone had been hit.
“It’s pretty amazing,†Hayward said at the team’s shootaround Friday morning. “I think it’s really cool. I think it’s also cool that the guy said however much they get over they would donate to the cause that I tweeted about. I think that’s …

Rodney Hood to sit vs. Trail Blazers

Having played through a lingering knee injury for a large stretch of the season already, shooting guard Rodney Hood said he was prepared to gut it out the rest of the way.
But the Jazzman’s pain apparently has become too much.
Hood will join three other players — starters Derrick Favors and George Hill and backup point guard Raul Neto — on the Utah Jazz’s injury report for tonight’s matchup with the Portland Trail Blazer.

Below the belt? Wizards cry foul on John Wall’s technical

John Wall gave Rudy Gobert a high-five below the belt on Friday night, but the Washington Wizards and their star guard thought the technical foul that followed was the real low blow.
“I don’t know. They said it was a ‘hostile act,’†Wizards coach Scott Brooks said afterward. “I’ve been around a lot of fights back when I played, and come on. Really? It’s ridiculous.â€
Wall was chasing Jazz forward Joe Ingles over a screen Gobert had set when he fought around Gobert’s right side and then put his ri…

Jazz shootaround: Hayward, Cousins both questionable for Jazz-Pelicans game

Two all-stars could be reduced to watching from the bench tonight, as the Jazz and Pelicans square off in a late-season contest with plenty on the line for each team.
Jazz forward Gordon Hayward did not participate in shootaround Monday after sustaining an injury to his left quadriceps on Saturday. He is officially listed as questionable for the game.
Pelicans big man DeMarcus Cousins, meanwhile, is also listed as questionable on his team’s injury report, after missing a Sunday night contest in …

Utah Jazz blog: Jazz clinch playoff spot

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?
OK. Let’s go with the good news.
The Utah Jazz are going to the postseason for the first time since 2012. The Jazz needed either the Nuggets or Trail Blazers to lose Sunday to clinch a playoff berth. Denver delivered in a big way, losing 115-90 to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Now the (potentially) bad news for a Jazz team struggling to find its form lately while still trying to hold onto the No. 4 seed, and the home-court advantage that comes with it…

Utah Jazz blog: John Stockton won’t give today’s stars a pass for resting

One summer during his Hall of Fame career, John Stockton bought a ticket to a baseball game. The legendary Jazz point guard won’t say who it was, but there was one player in particular he was going to see. Turns out, on that particular day, the guy sat out, didn’t play, rested.
“I was incensed,†Stockton recalled. “And I’ve never rooted or really particularly cared for that guy since.â€
Stockton played the full 82 games in 16 of his 19 seasons as a pro. So while the debate over NBA teams resting …
