It hurts but Tottenham’s blueprint could work for stagnating West Ham

Slaven Bilic’s side will bare their teeth against Spurs on Saturday while grudgingly admitting their rivals’ evolutionary process has its merits

For West Ham United supporters, the notion their club could do worse than take inspiration from Tottenham Hotspur in their drive to evolve may seem like blasphemy. East End passions are rarely more inflamed than when Tottenham visit and even the London Stadium running track may not douse the atmosphere for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.

Mauricio Pochettino’s players will be braced for a caustic reception. They have not forgotten how West Ham, hopeless against every other big side in their new home, relished their part in ending Tottenham’s title challenge last season.

Smells like team spirit as Pochettino treats Tottenham to a night at Beast

Spurs manager has sought to build a togetherness, on and off the field, and nights like Wednesday in a swanky West End restaurant are a part of the process

The Observer’s restaurant critic, Jay Rayner, came away from Beast in 2014, shortly after it had opened in London’s West End, with a piece of advice. “Go there with someone else’s money, because God knows you’ll need a lot of it,” he wrote. “Got any friends who are, say, international drug barons? Excellent. They may be able to afford dinner.”

Mauricio Pochettino, presumably, had not read the review because he went to Beast on Wednesday night with 49 of his colleagues from Tottenham Hotspur and he paid for them all. The chairman, Daniel Levy, was there, along with the entire first-team squad, Pochettino’s assistants and assorted others from across the staff. And very nice it was, too, by all accounts.

Mousa Dembélé’s playing time must be managed, says Mauricio Pochettino

• Tottenham player on bench in league recently despite recovery from surgery
• ‘He is a genius … it’s so important to manage him properly,’ says Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has said he still has to manage Mousa Dembélé’s playing minutes with the utmost care, despite the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder having undergone surgery at the end of last season in a bid to ease a long-standing foot problem.

Pochettino has referred to Dembélé as his “genius” and, ordinarily, the Belgian would be the first name on the Spurs team sheet. Virtually every Tottenham player would say Dembélé is the best player at the club but Pochettino has surprised some onlookers by naming the 30-year-old as a substitute in the Premier League for the past two weekends against Everton and Swansea City. Dembélé was not used against Swansea.
