Angels mailbag: Where to go from here?

Hello, Angels fans. As of today, your favorite baseball team is 8-12, on a 65-win pace, and its best starting pitcher is not going to pitch at least until June. The outlook is not great. So let’s answer some questions about the state of the team. As always, please submit mailbag questions through my Twitter account (@pedromoura) or via email at pedro.moura@latimes.com. This is a tremendously difficult question to answer at this stage in the season because, as I’ve stated in this space in previous weeks, so much of it depends on Garrett Richards’ health. Without him, a below-.500 season seems certain. If he returns as soon as he’s eligible in June and pitches as he’s capable, the outlook for the

Who was at fault in the Red Sox-Orioles weekend battles?

Who is wrong in the unnecessary feud between the Red Sox and Orioles over Manny Machado’s slide into Dustin Pedroia? If you’re going to apply the unwritten rules, then at least execute them properly. If a Sox pitcher had hit Machado in a meaty part of his body on Saturday-one day after he unintentionally injured Pedroia with a slide into second base, not two-Machado almost certainly would have accepted his fate.

Phillies place Aaron Nola on DL with back strain

It’s been an eventful few weeks for Phillies prospects — call-ups, fast starts, slow starts and eye-opening performances. Zach Eflin was called up from Triple A after one start to replace the injured Clay Buchholz. Mark Leiter Jr. was promoted to give the Phils an extra arm in the bullpen. Right-hander Ben Lively spent a few days in the majors and didn’t pitch but collected some coin — an estimated $8,500 for three days — before heading back down to Triple A. “The big thing for me is that inventory at Triple A when we have a pitcher like Eflin coming up,” Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Sunday after Eflin pitched seven strong innings. With that, we’ll begin this week’s Future Phillies

The 27 Worst Free Agent Signings in MLB History

Yoenis Cespedes, the best hitter on the market, quickly signed with the New York Mets for four years at $110 million. In the offseason prior to 2008, Andruw Jones was coming off a season in which he hit .222 with 26 home runs and 94 RBI in 154 games fo…

The big flaw in modern ballparks

Travis Sawchik writes about the post-Camden Yards generation of ballparks over at FanGraphs. The ones everyone loves because they’re nice and clean and friendly and are full of amenities. And that’s true! They are nice! But they all have a huge flaw: unless you’re in expensive seats, you’re too far away from the action. Sawchik uses cross sections of ballparks — available at Andrew Clem’s website — to show that fans sitting in the upper decks of ballparks are way higher and way farther back than they used to be at many old ballparks such as Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium, Old Comiskey, Tiger Stadium and Ebbets Field. A lot of this has to do with an admirable impulse: to eliminate the beams which

2017 Washington Nationals suddenly looking much more like the 2016 Nats…

The division champs part, not the first round playoff exit part.Believe it or not, less than ten games really dont mean that much. But for a team with World Series expectations, everything is amplified, from a bad inning, to a bad game, to a bad week

Kaval: A’s considering future move into Raiders’ locker room

OAKLAND — The Raiders are likely to play at the Coliseum for the next two seasons at least, but the A’s are daydreaming about the time they can finally call the venue their own. One idea they’re considering is moving their home clubhouse into the space that currently serves as the Raiders locker room, which would more than double the current space they have. Beyond that, imagine the possibility of the A’s current clubhouse being transformed into a “club” type area for fans to schmooze and enjoy some beverages. Team president Dave Kaval says both ideas are on the table for after the Raiders move to Las Vegas, which they’re planning to do for the 2020 NFL season. The No. 1 long-term goal for the

Yoenis Cespedes should be ready for Tuesday’s game

The Mets are off today, and that day off may be just enough to get outfielder Yoenis Cespedes ready to start their next game, on Tuesday, against the Braves. At least that’s what he’s telling Mets manager Terry Collins. Cespedes did not play in the weekend series against the Nationals, but was available as a pinch hitter yesterday. He was even on the on-deck circle at the end of last night’s game. Cespedes, who tweaked his hammy running to second base on Thursday, is hitting .255/.364/.636 with six homers and 10 RBI in 15 games on the young season.

10. Los Angeles Dodgers (910, plus-12, LT:2)

Last spring, Dodgers GM Farhan Zaidi laid out his plan for the team’s present and future in crystal-clear terms. To win now, and later, the Dodgers would need to lean on a blend of youth, data, and depth. After employing the 2016 NL Rookie of the Year winner in Corey Seager, the Dodgers now appear on the verge of calling up lefty phenom Julio Urias from the minors, promoting him to the big league rotation, and hopefully keeping him there.

MLB: 5 Greatest Games of Clayton Kershaw’s Career

When it comes to the best position player in baseball, few will give you a name other than Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout. For the best pitcher in the game, most probably say Clayton Kershaw. While he hasn’t experienced the most postseason success in his career, the 28-year-old is there now and he dominated the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 of the last NLCS.

There will be a street named after Barry Bonds in San Francisco

The City of San Francisco is not renaming Market Street or some other main drag to honor Barry Bonds or anything, but yes, there will be a “Barry Bonds Street” or “Barry Bonds Avenue” or something like that in San Francisco soon. There will also be streets named after Willie Mays, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda. Willie McCovey will have a park named after him. This is all part of the redevelopment of the site of Candlestick Park, which was knocked down to make way for a mixed-use development But while the stadium is gone, the names of those who made Candlestick Park famous will be all over the place, mostly in the names of the streets. There will likewise be streets named after San Francisco
