PITTSBURGH — Almost lost in an avalanche of Cubs runs Monday night at PNC Park was their most significant pitching feat in more than a week — or at least the most symbolic. Left-hander Brett Anderson produced a quality start. “Technically it was a quality start, but in my mind it wasn’t very quality,” Anderson said after a 14-3 victory over the Pirates in which he walked six and pitched the minimum six innings to qualify for the technicality. It was the Cubs’ first quality start since Jon Lester’s seven scoreless innings eight days earlier. “My offensive performance was better than my pitching,” said Anderson, who didn’t throw a pitch with less than a four-run lead. He added his own run-scoring

This is a results-oriented business, and Hanley Ramirez just doesn’t much in the way of results to offer his Fantasy owners so far. Among players classified as a DH by FanGraphs.com, Ramirez ranks just 12th out of 13 in wOBA, with a .256 mark. After hitting his first homer of the year Sunday, Hanley ranks just 536th among all players in Roto scoring, including just 41st at first base; the numbers in H2H scoring are similar. Or at least, by most measures. MLB.com recently introduced a stat, Expected Weight On-base average (xwOBA) that attempts to predict player performance based on Statcast data. They compare every batted ball to similar ones from the past, and then assign a hit probability as

The Nationals own the Mets, the Mets need to own the rest of the division. Life is that simple for the Mets. Take care of business against the Braves — a team they play seven of the next 10 against and the Mets can begin to take a deep breath and let their talent show and maybe find a way to win a game or two against the Nationals. The no-panic quotes could be heard from every locker after Sunday night’s 6-3 loss, completing the three-game sweep by the Nationals, the latest episode of Revenge of Murph. The Nats are 15-7 against the Mets since Daniel Murphy took his talents to D.C. These Mets, who use the injury excuse as their E-ZPass, need to wake up and not just blame their woes on the latest

The Diamondbacks announced on Monday that starter Shelby Miller has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. The appreciation for Clayton Kershaw trickled through the Dodgers dugout during his outing against Colorado last week. Accolades are customary for his performances on the mound, but these he earned with a bat in his hand. After falling into an 0-2 count against Rockies starter Tyler Anderson, Kershaw held back on a pair of cutters that missed the strike zone, then fouled away a 93-mph fastball on the outer edge to extend the at-bat. “Man,” backup infielder Rob Segedin joked to hitting coach Turner Ward, “he’s got the best two-strike approach on the team.” The discipline and intensity that define Kershaw as a pitcher extend to his performance inside the batter’s box. His skills as a hitter are

SAN FRANCISCO — Sergio Romo, all dressed up in Dodger Blue, returned to AT&T Park on Monday and laughed about his new role in the Giants rivalry. “It’s on, it’s on, it’s on,” he said. But part of his heart still drifted to the other dugout. The longtime San Francisco reliever said he was “surprised and saddened” to hear last week that Giants ace Madison Bumgarner was injured in a dirt bike accident and will miss substantial playing time. Romo, who spent nine seasons with the Giants, said he knew of Bumgarner’s adventurous side but was taken aback that the pitcher put himself at risk during the season. “Although we’re no longer teammates, I still care,” Romo said during his first visit to AT&T

BOSTON — The Yankees’ final memory of Fenway Park last season was a painful one. They arrived Sept. 15 with hopes of turning their surprising late-season run into an even more unlikely playoff berth. Instead, Hanley Ramirez hit a walk-off homer off Dellin Betances in the opener, and the rival Red Sox went on to a four-game sweep from which the Yankees never recovered. At that point, the Yankees already were a team in transition. That process will continue Tuesday, when they renew their efforts to prove the first three weeks of the season haven’t been a fluke. “This is gonna be a tough series,” Betances said. “We’re happy with the way we started the season, but you know it’s different when you

As Boston Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes has learned, it’s four games and an undisclosed fine. Barnes was the Red Sox pitcher who threw a pitch Sunday near the head of Baltimore Orioles star Manny Machado, a pitch that was in retaliation for Machado’s rough slide into second base Friday night that injured Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia.

The Miami Marlins (10-8) come to town on Tuesday, fresh off a six-game West Coast swing that saw them go 3-3, including wins over the San Diego Padres and Saturday and Sunday to give them some positive vibes on a Monday off that both teams enjoyed. “Any time you lose the first game and come back to win the series, it feels good,” Sunday’s starting pitcher Tom Koehler said to the Sun-Sentinel after a 7-3 victory.
