Gloucester edge out Saracens as Mako Vunipola makes return from injury

• Gloucester 31-23 Saracens

Mako Vunipola proved his fitness for England’s Six Nations encounter with Italy next week by lasting for 71 minutes in his first match since before Christmas but he could not prevent Saracens from slumping to their second defeat in six days.

Eddie Jones was in the stand to watch Vunipola make his first appearance for two months after recovering from a knee injury. The prop was heavily involved in the opening try as Saracens looked for a response after their defeat at Worcester.

Gloucester director David Humphreys rues collapse against Bath

• Gloucester 6-15 Bath: third straight defeat at Kingsholm
• Late tries from Anthony Watson and Matt Banahan seal win for visitors

Gloucester’s intent at the start of the campaign was to turn Kingsholm into a fortress, but they forgot to roll up the welcome mat. Bath, like Leicester and Newcastle before them this season, came from behind here to leave the Shed shedding tears.

David Humphreys, Gloucester’s director of rugby, said the three home defeats, which followed Northampton’s victory here at the end of last season, are unacceptable and he struggled to understand why a dominant performance in the opening half, which was not reflected by the 3-0 interval scoreline, was followed by an alarming collapse against opponents who had a 12-strong injury list.

Anthony Watson takes Bath past Gloucester in dire West Country derby

• Gloucester 6-15 Bath
• Defeat is Gloucester’s third in three at Kingsholm this season

Bath had won on their last three league visits here, while Gloucester had lost their last three home matches. History is not often a factor in derbies but, here, it was as the home side’s early fire and fury was doused by a team that was Saracens-esque for the most part, patiently waiting for the moment when the opposition became weary, then striking.

It made for one of the more forgettable matches of the season, an afternoon when the weather saturated skill. The tension throughout was the most entertaining factor: within five minutes the two sets of forwards were squaring up to each other after the Bath prop Henry Thomas, who in the build-up said that his side intended to get their teeth in their opponents – an unfortunate choice of words after the Chris Ashton affair, – had been penalised for dropping a scrum.
